Not Happy
This book was assigned to me in my Criminal Justice class. It is very easily readable but FULL of mis-represented statistics and mis-quoted quotes.
Amazing book!
In this book, the author describes how the world works. It can all be summed up by this sentence in his book:
Superb, non-threatening and helpful
As an instructor working in the Humanities, finding non-threatening ways to talk about privilege,whiteness, and/or racism is very challenging. As I read the negative reviews, I am even more aware of how difficult it is to get these ideas across without being accused of self-hatred, etc. In an effort to encourage positive self reflection on these complex issues, I have read many of the foundation works Dr. Johnson mentions. His recapituation of these ideas is indeed gentle. One of the best things he does is make it possible for individuals to recognize that, while they may have unearned entitlements in one area, they may not have them in another. In this way, it is possible for practically everyone to recognize the feeling of being an outsider and this can lead to a compassion and understanding that has NOTHING TO DO with guilt. This work can create a bridge. As an instructor in the area of cultural studies, I often must challenge individuals who believe feeling guilty is all they can do. It isn't.Dr. Johnson gives us actions that we as individuals can actually engage. BTW the chapter on Capitalism is elegant dynamite.

A woman's liberation classic
This is a beautifully written and highly enjoyable exploration of the history of women in writing. It is also a plea for the liberation of women, and their full entrance into the world of Literature. Woolf argues that a woman needs financial independence, a room , that is a space of her own, if she is to be able to truly create. She also needs the kind of access to everyday life that women confined to hearth and home were as she sees it, traditionally denied.
a room for what?
This essay reunites several works from Virginia Woolf about the right of women to possess a place - a room- to read, write and work, intended that not as domestic work as was usual for women during many times.
To get a room of one's own
Woolf's argument that "a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction," holds true not just for fiction but for any activity a woman wants to pursue. The early 20th century essay is still widely relevant, and not just in developing countries.

Refreshingly balanced!
I expected this to be more of a religious-type book:"THE Bible says...."It was nothing like that!!!One of my pleasant surprises was that the author is pro-choice!
A Woman's Worth
I highly recommend this book for any woman who is graduating college, getting married, having children, dealing with divorce, coping with aging parents or feeling completely overthe edge. It's is a feel good book that makes a woman feel completely understood and worthy. It reminds us who we truly are and how much value we contribute. When everyone or everything around you leads you to feel spent and worthless, this is the book to read. It's the book to treasure and refer to whenver life gets out of control. I've given it to my best friends and they love it.

Feel good feminity, if she's so worthy then how come ...
Williamson does a great job describing the goddess and valuing our feminity. Readers will get that usual warm fuzzy feeling that Marianne is so good at evoking. In the dozen plus years since writing this book it seems that her own advice just doesn't cut it anymore than weekly psychotherapy sessions do for others. Perhaps the "imbalance of male/female energies" in the world is to blame. Williamson's lectures or "ministry" seem to reflect a segment of the female population that are highly intelligent, well-educated, articulate, charismatic, attractive, and a basket of neurotic therapy junkies. There is a distinction between maintaining well-being and indulging in self-help addiction at the expense of your life. Williamson's Woman's Worth appeals to an audience of modern women seeking solace or hiding their desire for an M.R.S. degree. Jean Shinoda Bolen's "Goddesses in Everywoman" is a real classic from the early 1990's. If you're looking to have Jungian archetypes on a feminine divine force empower you woman-ness ... pick up Bolen's books instead. For all Marianne's mantra of women power ... she still grips in her latest book about turning 50, having no man in her life, and the other usual complainsts since her lectures on metaphysics began in 1983 ... mainly about men leaving her for someone they love enough to marry. Williamson's "student of life" content, heavily borrowed from all sorts of Bay Area New Age "stuff", is great for anyone who wants to scratch the surface of spirituality rather than deepen into it. My humble advice: take-up Buddhism, see a real therapist, and listen to women who are living the life YOU want in different areas (love, career, health, etc).

Finally!-- a nursing guide with one foot in the real world
With an adopted 10-month old at home, my first pregnancy turned out to be twins. I loved my 40+ hour management level job and did not want to leave. I did not think nursing was an option, and quite frankly wasn't that interested in it anyway. This book changed my mind. It is down-to-earth and gave me the grounding I needed to think creatively and yet realistically about what I needed and what my children needed from me. I ended up nursing my twins almost exclusively for 2.5 years. Best decision I've ever made. I highly recommend this book and purchase it for every pregnant mom I know who inquires about nursing and managing a challenging work-filled life.

Good Guidelines
This book I feel was very helpful to me even though my son was born early and breastfeeding attempts were unsuccessful. The book gives great insight to nursing successfully as well as working successfully while nursing, and I will pass this book to all of my friends that are pregnant and returning to work mothers in the future. I think first time breastfeeding mothers returning to work are very frightened and even intimidated by the thought and really need someone to help lay a timetable down (of course as a baseline, everyones life is a bit different so all will need to make some adjustments). this book really helped to give that needed structure and to let you know it is possible. The only thing I disliked about this book was the amount of talk about co-sleeping and some other opinions that get fluffed around, at times it feels a tid bit pushy, but if you can get past those frequent comments and hint arounds then its no problem. A must read for Catholics!
Double Crossed is a must read for all Catholics - practicing, lapsed or somewhere in between.
DOUBLE CROSSED and AT THE CROSSROADS
DOUBLE CROSSED shows how Church Fathers thoughtlessly killed its willingly obedient, unpaid or underpaid nun work force and, in the process, killed so many excellent schools, hospitals, and social services. When Vatican II arrived, this writer had been privileged with sixteen years of extraordinary Catholic schooling, and, in good conscience, felt forced to review how one could maintain faith in such a woman-unfriendly church. Still, no longer identifying with Catholicism, I continued to respect and honor the women who taught me to think for myself. I considered them feminists before we used that term. That's when, in appreciation and tribute, I wrote AT THE CROSSROADS, a novel about four contemporary nuns facing feminist issues. If you liked DOUBLE CROSSED, you will like AT THE CROSSROADS because it lets the reader experience what it was like to be a nun "before" we accepted women as equals, and the kind of moral challenges one must endure before one dares embrace an "after."

I think the reader is double-crossed
If the author, as an investigative journalist, took a step back and looked at the past versus the future in terms of American female religious, he would discover that there are orders today that are anything BUT in decline. I'll site one for example, that I have personal experience with: The Nashville Dominicans. This order has over 200 woman, and the average age is 36. Yes, 36. When you look closer, it is easy to see why. As with every other religious order in this country that is blossoming today, the members wear full habits, they pray the Rosary, they focus on Eucharistic Adoration, and they are obedient to the Magisterium. For readers trying to figure out what really happened after Vatican II, here is some true history... When Cardinal Wojtyla (the future John Paul II and a man who had significant input in many of the documents that were issued from Vatican II) returned to his home country of Poland, he helped his people understand and implement the changes that the Council had discerned. The Polish had no problems embracing the changes, and their faith deepened as a result. Poland remains the most devout Catholic nation in the world. The American Bishops, on the other hand, did not exhibit the same cohesive leadership in our own country after Vatican II, and as a result, many priests, religious, and lay people were left to figure things out on their own. The fruits of this experimentation has led to poorly catechized adults, a decline in priests and religious, and a secular mindset. These facts cannot be argued. Post-Vatican II Catholics, like myself, want more than the watered-down faith we've been handed. We seek the truth, which is waiting for us at the heart of our faith, and we seek priests and religious who represent that truth. The book is not accurate.It doesn't address real marriage problems but only looks at men.Women have no responsiblity and I have seen this ruin marriages.The authors wife is the prime promoter.The book is good for men to help them understand women but lacks real marriage substance to have a lasting marriage according to the word of God.

A must-have companion to the brilliant Master Key System book

The Other Boot Has Finally Dropped!
With Tony Michalski's publication of Master Key Arcana, there is closure to the earlier "The Master Key", by Charles F. Haanel, with an incentive for further exploration. Readers who profit from, and are inspired by Haanel's works may also enjoy and profit from the workshops, seminars, books, cd's, etc. of Dr.Wayne Dyer.Dr. Dyer is not alone. He seems to be signaling a renaissance in our time similar to the one that burgeoned forth in Haanel's era. 'can't keep this to myself'
I have been an admirer of Wally Lamb for quite awhile now.But when I read that he was volunteering his time to conduct writing workshops at York Correctional Institution, I was so very impressed and moved.I couldn't put the book down; it was so full of life -- and living.Even under the worst circumstances.The writings demonstrate what we -- and the "officials" -- have always known:that most molestations of children are conducted by close friends or relatives.And that kind of betrayal can never be undone. But I was so disappointed when the book was over and I had no more to read from the group.I could have gone on reading much more from these remarkable women, who have lived such violent, difficult lives.And this is not to excuse the crimes they committed, but merely to acknowledge that they are not only their crimes, but complete lives of individuals who evolved to where they are today.As much as I have admired Wally Lamb and his writings before (I only read two books of his), I admire him even more and eagerly await his next book.And I hope there will be another volume from his Women of York workshops.

Disturbing butoften hopeful
I am glad that I read this book as it gave me a bit of an insight to what life is like in prison for woman incarcerated at a maximum prison. This book certainly helped me to appreciate the freedoms that most of us take for granted on a much larger scale of understanding. I usually keep my reviews pretty short, but I have to add that these short stories these courageous women wrote in this book are very worth while reading and I learned quite a lot from these woman who were willing to share their lives with us.Being someone who worked at a maximum facility for men, I always wondered what the female experience in jail would be like, and I believe that this book gives you a pretty good idea. None of the incarcerated women make any excuses for their crimes, they accept full responsibility, and then give us a bio of their lives, as far as what may have led up to their crimes.Yes it was disturbing for me to read at times, but yet a book I just could not put down. What disturbed me was clearly hearing about how much violence these woman as children sadly grew up with, and how no one was there to help them, or assist them out of the nightmare of child abuse, and domestic violence. The beginning of the book is interesting as well as Wally Lamb talks about his life just a little bit and what led up to his other book, "She's Come Undone", which is another book if his I couldn't put down.
One of the best books I've read in awhile
I must confess, I did not open this book without some bias.I volunteer at a prison and have a deep interest in women's issues, and after reading the other Amazon.com reviews, I was pretty sure I would love this book.(I was right.)What I didn't expect was a strong desire to share it with just about everyone I know.Don't get me wrong, this is no "Chicken Soup for the Soul" -- there are some hard stories in this book.But the writing is outstanding, and in reading each story I was captivated by the author's personality, struggles, hopes, and essential humanity.This book was, for me, a powerful aid to compassion and understanding.I recommend it highly. ... Rewarding Faith and Love will come to you...
EXCELLENT book. I am not the best sometimes at reading nor finishing a book, however this one...I could not put it down. This book was great and she made it very easy to understand. Sometimes the Bible can be a bit hard to understand for some people so they just avoid and don't read. Reading this book will put it all in perspective for you in understanding these great women of the Bible. They all have stories in what you can relate to even in our times now. Its awesome and you will greatly enjoy it and it will greatly strengthen your faith in what God has for you. Its a great book for a womens Bible study group, I highly advise it. Sometimes you don't need all the fancy big books to get what you need out of it....

Big Disappointment
We purchased this book for our moms' Bible study group and are very disappointed by this book's peppy, shallow nature.For example, the chapters on Sarah's remarkable faith fail to mention Hagar and Ishmael.We will be abandoning our study of this book for one with a more complex and in depth discussion of the triumphs, struggles, and failures of women in the Bible ... Very Happy Hours
This is hands-down the BEST "mommy" book I have read.Forget all the parenting magazines, forget all the girlfriend guides...anyone who has become a mommy and wonders where the wild girl she was before went MUST read this book.I listened to the audiobook and it had me in stitches.Thank you Brett Paesel for your brutal, raw, and much needed honesty!

Best Book
This is the funniest, best book I've ever read about the thoughts and emotions of new mothers.Brett Paesel has had the courage to publish thoughts that I don't even admit I have.Even my husband, who endured my reading it aloud to him, enjoyed it and totally relates to the scenarios Brett paints about her own husband.
A very funny, refreshingly honest, well-written tale of new motherhood.
Any adult can relate to the core story: How does one resolve a decision your heart knows is right, but which threatens the rest of your being? Here, Brett knows having a husband, child, and family was the right choice, but she'd like a second opinion. What follows is a story of a woman searching for the answer she knows it out there. EXCELLENT BOOK - BUT DR ZILBERGELD BADLY NEEDS TO DO AN UPDATE
I've just read The New Male Sexuality and I've got to say, I'm really impressed... It is so rare to find a self-help book FOR MEN (most of that genre is very female oriented) and Dr Zilbergeld is very male-positive...
This book is in tune with men, but not women.
This book deserves credit for addressing men's needs for good sex, but is hit and miss for women.
Not a bad addition to your library.
I bought this book for me, but I think my teenaged daughter has gotten more out of it than I have.It's answered far more questions for her than she was comfortable asking me about. ... Read more

I have financially benefited from this book
I read this book 2 years ago and it solidified my view that negotiation was something I had to do more of. While the first half of the book was a little depressing to read, the advice in the second half on what to do about it was inspiring. I personally took solace in the fact that I didn't have to change my personality to ask for and get what I wanted.
A book every woman should read.
This is a very important book for all women.It reveals how women have put themselves in positions of disadvantage, by basically not sticking up for ourselves, devaluing our worth, and just not asking for what we deserve.This book, although not always the snappiest read, is full of interesting statistics and studies.It is life-changing.

Amazing

Absolutely gripping, this story had me in tears -a must read
Betty Mahmoody married an Iranian, who had been naturalised to America for more than 20 years.Yet when Khomeini led the Islamic revolution, he began to talk more and more of 'home'.While Betty had fears about going to Iran, she thought she must, as she did not want to file for divorce and risk her husband's wrath, and worse, that he could take her daughter who she might never see again.
Amazing Story
This is one of the few books I read in a couple of days.It is an amazing story and was refreshingly honest about a different culture without all the politically correct stuff that is usually in books!I highly recommend it!

A Great Book for High School Students
I first read this book when I was in high school. I loved the book so much that I had to have a copy for myself. This is a very compelling story and Betty shows herself to be strong and always thinking of her daughter's safety more than her own.I think that if high school students had a chance to read this compelling story then they would understand the hardships that some Americans go through when they go to foriegn countries or marry foriegners who end up kidnapping them once they get them into their native land. ... Katz is right on--this is the next step in ending violence.
Jackson Katz believes that an end to violence (of all kinds, but particularly violence against women) must come from a new definition of masculinity that does not support violent behavior.His book explains clearly why this is and how to begin to make it happen and is some of the most positive and forward-thinking work in this field.This book is very accessible--it is not accusatory or preach-y and is very honest.I have bought a second copy of the book because so many people have been interested in borrowing it.Jackson Katz is a real innovator and his book is insightful and inspiring.

Buy this for the men in your life....
I wish I had 200 copies of this book. There are so many men I know that can find themselves depicted in Katz's clear and insightful reflections on male culture today. Why has the violence women suffer at the hands of some men been called a "woman's issue"? Where's the curiosity and creativity of more men when it comes to looking at why violence and sexual violence in particular are so epidemic? Or even, more dangerously, glamorized in aspects of the pornography industry? Forget "Pretty Woman" or "The Girl Next Door" and dive into real life. Katz has done his research and articulates a vision that should make every man stand up and collectively work to make this a world they are proud their daughters and sons will inherit. I really wish I had 200 copies....

I've always been a big fan of Jackson Katz' work and his latest book is no exception. This is a really accessible, well written, and thorough piece that takes a critical look at the hegemony in our society that makes violence against women by men, men's destructive and violent behavior become a culturally normal thing. Katz does an incredible job in piecing together his argument in a clear manner that doesn't alienate the audience..and in any sort of anti-violence work, that's a really difficult thing to do because the subject matter is such a serious and taboo one. I would highly recommend this book for any parent, any educator, anybody that wants to take proactive steps against men's violence in america and think critically about those issues. I would also suggest Jackson's video, the bible of any men's anti-violence work "Tough Guise" (www.mediaed.org). As a student in the women studies department at the University of Washington, I can say that Jackson's work is always highly respected and popular among the students and faculty.

A Driveling Story of Self Pity
Despite my profound love of literature, I could not bring myself to enjoy "The Woman Warrior".The monotonous writing style as well as the bland anecdotes did nothing but block me off from being immersed from the story.I felt myself yawning everytime I had to start a new chapter, and would have been estatic when I finished the book had I contained the energy to feel in such a way.I closed the book feeling drained, bored, tired, and unfulfilled.And if that was what I was aiming for while I read, I wouldn't enjoy the skill at all.

Not a must-read, but a should-read
As a student of literature, I have had to read Kingston's "No Name Woman" numerous times as it is widely anthologized. This story represents the first of five sections in "The Woman Warrior."
Amazing
I just finished reading this book as a requirement for my research in Folklore and Mythology class. At first, I wasn't exactly thrilled at the opportunity to read it, for I'm sure that anyone can relate with the pains that go with required reading. However, I was truly blown away.

Beautiful Writing; Offensive, Racist Material
The majority of this book (at least the essays anyway) can be summed up in three main topics: educating readers about her culture, praising her culture to the point of absurdity, and claiming the entire white culture to be both ignorant and racist.
an excruciatingly painful read - only do so if you must
This book is a tormented stream of consciousness from a lady who was obviously fighting major demons.It is exactly the type of book that you would expect an amateur academic to "wow" and "gush" over.The discerning reader, on the other hand, sees page after page of outdated cliches, sob-stories, and anger-filled tantrums.Anzaldua would like you to believe that this is all the fault of the "white" culture messing with the enlightened cosmic race of the mestiza.She'd like you to think that her mestiza/chicana/lesbian/female status completely determined her status in life.The truth is that Gloria was really ugly, and that, more than anything else, made her the bitter, annoying pseudo-intellectual that the was.

Racist Garbage
While most reviewers seem to be bent on lauding Gloria Anzaldúa's "insightful and progressive" writings, I can't help but take a different viewpoint.The vast majority of her essays, while cloaked in a sense of righteous equality, are quite simply racist drivel.She speaks of acceptance and tolerance for foreign cultures in America, and harps on the evils of correcting students when they use improper English, yet instills her writing with a blatant and offensive racism.
