this book just reifies the old boy/girl dichotomy.we have to move on from finger pointing to some real issues.are we really to believe that boys are being harmed by feminism? poor things...is there really anything inherent in being a boy or girl.We know that there is not, so how can people still be making these passe and inflamatory arguments.Give me a break.

This book was OUTSTANDING.The only thing that pains me about it is that I bought it out of bargain bin.I would have gladly paid full price.5-0 out of 5 stars Only a little out of print...
This powerful and vital book is out of print - but only under this title. "Deadly Persuasion" was released in November 2000 under the new title "Can't Buy My Love: How Advertising Changes the Way We Think and Feel". Under that title, the book has never gone out of print, so it is easy to acquire. And you definitely should acquire it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Deadly Persuasion
A brillient and stunning consideration of how advertising affects society. Rather than the more popular route of blaming problems of the modern world on entertainment media, Kilbourne convincingly argues that it is, indeed, the unnoticed and unceasing stream of advertisments which is harmful. Required reading for anyone who ponders modern sociology. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good defence of enlightened values
Ms Ali has written a most useful book. She exposes the dishonesty of those who cry 'Islamophobia' whenever Islam is criticised. She shows how thuggishly orthodox Muslims behave to women, dissenters, Jews and gays. She shows the roots of this intolerance in the pre-medieval thinking of Muhammad and in the all-too-common dogmatic adherence to his outdated writings.
5-0 out of 5 stars An international bestseller, it's available here for the first time in English
THE CAGED VIRGIN: AN EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION FOR WOMEN AND ISLAM urges democracies to recommit to reason and makes a case for the freedom of women from Muslim oppression. It's her survey of Islam and its impact on the role of women and their rights, but does more than chart history: THE CAGED VIRGIN proffers a call to action from free women, and provides her own story of how author Ayaan Hirsi Ali evolved to become the leading voice for Muslim women around the world. An international bestseller, it's available here for the first time in English.
1-0 out of 5 stars Ayaan Hirsi Ali cannot speak for Islam
There is a difference between religion and culture, and although it is often difficult to tease them apart, the effort should be made. Ayaan Hirsi Ali has not made much of an attempt in her book, which seems to blame Islam for the shortcomings of Somali culture when it comes to women - and, worse, to imply that Somalia is typical of the Islamic world, which is so diverse that a 'typical' country cannot be found. Sadly, male oppression of women can be found in most parts of the world, including those with no connection to Islam - and men have often twisted religions to justify their treatment of women.

Editorial Review

Don-David Lusterman, a psychologist practicing in Baldwin, New York, believes that couples who work hard can save their marriages following an affair: "People often find that once infidelity is discovered and its aftereffects are behind them, their relationship is stronger than before, and subsequent infidelity is unlikely." This isn't true only of married couples--Lusterman points out that people in long-term, committed relationships, whether straight or gay, face the same devastating emotions and have to go through a similar rebuilding process if they want to remain together after one has strayed. Whether or not a troubled couple chooses to stay together, Lusterman says the best outcome is when both partners experience changes and new insights into their lives. He provides several case studies in which couples began to regain their trust through new communication, and instructs on the kind of feelings-expressing language that can help. (He also provides a section on finding a good therapist.) This book will help people on either side of an affair begin to understand what's going on, and help them find the resources they need to continue that quest. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The FIRST book you should read.
I thinkthis book is great, it addresses the children involved in infidelity much more than any other book I have read.It also explores how people can react when you confide in them.I honestly think this is the very first book people should read upon discovering an infidelity. It can act as a great guide post keeping the situation from getting any worse than it already is.Pretty quick read, and VERY helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear and Comprehensible
Dr. Lusterman comes to this subject with years of experience as a private practitioner and university level teacher in family therapy. This book is well written in language suited for professionals and the couples who seek their help in recovering from the trauma of affairs.

4-0 out of 5 stars Need help understanding?
I bought this book to help me understand and put perspective on my marriage. Last year I had an affair and told my husband. We both had a hard time. He couldnt understand why I did what I did, and neither could I. We had been married for 10 years and together for 13. After a few months he went and had an affair with a mutual friend. I couldnt understand and have spend the last year trying to understand and get through it. It was totally eating me up/ I know I did the exact same thing and several times more than he did. I was so hurt by the betrayal. I ordered this book and read it in 2 days. It had really helped me understand why I had an affair to begin with. I was trying to replace the romance I thought was missing. It gave good insight into what leads to the breakdown of a marriage and how to prevent it. I could have used this information a year ago. It also spoke of retalitory affairs. It shed some light on how my husband was feeling and how bad I had hurt him. After reading this book I was finally able to sit down and talk to him about everything that happened without either one of us getting mad and screaming. We are working on building trust and with the help of the knowledge we got from this book, I have faith in us. I would recommend it to anyone who is hurting like I was. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good introduction of transsexuals for nearly everyone
Transgendered persons, especially transsexuals, seem to be little understood by most people. There is still widespread ignorance, lack of understanding and prejudice against transsexuals. Some recent movies portraying transsexuals with understanding, empathy and tolerance, such as "Transamerica" and "Normal" should help many people better understand, tolerate and accept transsexuals.
5-0 out of 5 stars Awsome book overall
My only complaint about this book is that all of the references and background deals with adult transexual people. It would be nice if it were updated with references for children and adolesents. Overall I would highly recommend it. It is comprehensive and well written and provides an excellent knowledge base for the reader.

2-0 out of 5 stars Best taken with a grain of salt
This book gives a relatively good overall view of transsexualism for people who know nothing about it, but with some serious flaws. The author's descriptions of the experience are based entirely on accounts from therapy clients and her approach is objective, too much so in many regards. She presents outdated information without any genuine effort to refute it, such as the old freudian psycho-model of "gender identity disorder." She also mentions the horrid "treatments" visited on transsexuals, such as "aversion therapy" and "shock treatments" with no mention of their obvious cruel inhumanity. Her statement that we can't "change the brain," is downright sickening, and she presents it as though science should actually strive toward that Stepford Wives solution to transsexualism.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must-read for any woman or parent (especially working moms!)
I find myself raving about this book to every woman (and man) I know. This is the most astounding and thought-provoking book I've read in recent years.Professor Hrdy is an emeritus professor of anthropology at UC Davis who puts the behavior of mothers and infants into an evolutionary context, using a comparative approach and drawing from sociobiology, anthropology, and psychology. I enjoyed this book from my perspectives as a student who did doctoral research in behavioral ecology; as a scientist who's tired of the superficial stereotype of instinctive, selfless maternal devotion; and most profoundly as a mother who's trying somehow to balance the equation of doing good for my family, myself, and the world as an ecologist with a conservation group. I appreciated the fact that she did not just rely on her own research on langur monkeys, but extensively reviewed other studies (and pointed out the dearth of studies that challenge societal assumptions that all mothers should care for every infant under any circumstance). She also entertains different hypotheses instead of just staking out a prescription based on an idealized version from one point in human evolutionary history (i.e. romanticizing hunter-gatherer societies), as seen in anthropologist Meredith Small's "Our Babies, Ourselves", which is also a wonderful book, but lacks the breadth of Hrdy's scholarship.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for any evolutionary psychologist
So many great little factoids. My favorite topics include family planning (abortion, infanticide), maternal bonding, the adaptiveness of menopause, females in social structure, and lots of other tidbits I wish more authors would cover. The most fascinating thing is that these topics come up in the animal kingdom, not just with us.5-0 out of 5 stars Evolution from a female viewpoint
This is a fascinating look at evolution with particular reference to the female of the species.Packed with fascinating information about female behaviour through the ages. Descriptions of life among hunter-gatherer groups are particularly interesting.Subjects like infanticide, wetnursing, abandonment of infants, etc are gone into in great detail.I learnt a lot from this book.I particularly enjoyed the splendidly bloodthirsty lullabye from the Napoleonic era printed at the end of this book, my children love it.One small complaint, at one point in this book Ms. Hrdy compares housewives to laboratory rats. Now, I am used to the abuse routinely heaped on housewives, but this is really going a little too far.The big difference between a laboratory rat and a housewife is that I, a housewife, can leave my house any time I like (maybe it's different in America, perhaps housewives are kept locked up there, I don't know), and I frequently do.i have alot more freedom of movement than I would if I were, say, stuck in an office all day long.I quite accept Ms. Hardy' point that children do not have to be caredfor full-time by their mothers, but it would be nice if she could refrain from abusing those of us who actually enjoy being full-time carers. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars You Will Appreciate This Book if You are not a Brainwashed Moron
I don't own the book yet, but will purchase it after reading the reviews. Here's why.
5-0 out of 5 stars excellent work
This book will appeal to many men and women who realize society has chosen the wrong path in experimenting with gender and gender roles. To us, it is clear that underneath the "socialization," we crave manliness in our leadership, even after long periods of being pressed to resent it.Mansfield hits the nail on the head; men and women will appreciate the refreshing perspective of a Harvard professor who goes against the tide of liberalism.

1-0 out of 5 stars Meandering and Random
This book is little more than a meandering list of obtuse, random literary references on the word "Manliness". I must admit that after the first couple of chapters I could not force myself to press on and read the whole thing. It is as boring as reading a train schedule.

Editorial Review

Ever wonder why women can brush their teeth while walking and talking on various subjects while men generally find this very difficult to do?Why 99 percent of all patents are registered by men?Why stressed women talk? Why so many husbands hate shopping? According to Barbara and Allan Pease, science now confirms that "the way our brains are wired and the hormones pulsing through our bodies are the two factors that largely dictate, long before we are born, how we will think and behave. Our instincts are simply our genes determining how our bodies will behave in given sets of circumstances."That's right: socialization, politics, or upbringing aside, men and women have profound brain differences and are intrinsically inclined to act in distinct--and consequently frustrating--ways.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars So much information.
I was very surprised at how much I got from the book. Off the top of my head the book says women can see clearly in their peripheral vision. That's just crazy talk to a man because OUR peripheral vision is blurry. I had no idea and never would have known without this book. I've verified it with quite a few female friends just to be sure and they all concur. This explains why you almost never catch a woman checking out a guy. It also explains why men get caught so much.

This is the first book that truly helps me (and my mother too, and she is over 80 years old) understand why man and woman behaves differently.Once I understand why man behaves in such a way, not that they choose to, but they are made up and born in such a way, I no longer put the blame on my husband when he does not behave the way I expect him to.This certainly has improved our life and our relationship.I enjoyed the humors in the book.It is so much fun to read.I have sent copies to my friends and relatives whom I think could use a little help on their relationship with their partners.I just love the book and thank the authors for writing it. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Long awaited callenge to the ubiquitous stay-at-home philosophy
For a woman who was raised by a working mom (who still works long into retirement) it's amazing how persuasive the stay-at-home philosophy has been in convincing me that by being a good mom was strongly tied to my willingness to quit work at stay at home.
5-0 out of 5 stars Something that needed to be said
I picked this book up in a bookstore and couldn't put it down.I had to buy it and take it home so that I could finish reading it.What a book!Thank goodness for people like Linda Hirshman, who are willing to stick their necks out and say what needs to be said, even if it doesn't agree with the latest political fashion. Her premise that women must be present in the decision-making arena if decisions are going to be made that benefit women is just common sense!I have no idea why it's controversial, although I suspect many women who are unhappy with their "choices" are now trying a bit too vigourously to defend them, now that it's too late.I bought a second copy of this book for my mother, the woman who taught me that no capable, adult person should ever be dependent on another person for her support and well-being.I bought a third copy for my sister to share with her 12-year-old daughter, because girls today need to know that the road to happiness, fulfillment and success leads straight through being able to take care of yourself.

1-0 out of 5 stars Get away from this book
I consider myself to be fairly well-read and definitely interested in women's history and gender issues and I am personally appalled at this book. This is possibly the worst researched and most misinformed book that I have read in a long tim. First, Linda Hirshman seems to care more about Betty Friedan than she does the actual history of the women's movement or the many women (including women of color and women outside the United States) who made an impact on women's lives. Just as a point of reference, Betty Friedan was actually a liberal (not radical) feminist in the second wave of the feminist movement (not the first as Ms. Hirshman claims). Also, while it is important to talk about the experiences of "elite" women, Hirshman ignores the experiences of the majority of women, who may not be white, well-educated, or wealthy. I could go on and on but I would suggest that before Hirshman announces a new type of feminism, she actually studies the feminist movement that already exists. This book is poorly written and does a disservice to women who are actually struggling with raising a family, finding meaningful work, and living in a patriarchical society. I say save your money and by a book by a real feminist...bell hooks, Gloria Steinem, Andrea Dworkin, just to name a few. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read that covers the basics
I bought this book hoping to be both entertained and instructed about how traditional gentlemanly ways should be applied or adapted to our times. In many respects, Essential Manners for Men did not disappoint; the author's impressive credentials are indeed sufficient to make one listen and take notes about everything etiquette.
1-0 out of 5 stars Misleading title; and book contains more obvious than helpful information
This book is probably not helpful to anyone seeking more than VERY basic social skills.I did not find anything particularly informative. The writing is long-winded, is generally an midly annoying, boring lecturing style. At many points, it actually seemed as if the author was not a man, but rather, someone's wife carrying on about the commonplace, stale female gripes and frustrations about how filthy are their men. Where's the male backbone? Not here. The male author seemed to cowtow to the female of the house; it actually looks like he mirrored the concerns of various women consulted and then determined that essential manners require full male compliance.

Editorial Review

Edelman shares her own painful story and the stories of many other women who, as children or adults, lost their mothers. She explains the stages of grief and adjustment. She considers the secondary effects that can occur: the girl-child filling the lost mother's role at home for father and younger siblings. If you've lost your mother, you no longer have to face it alone. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Strongly recommended reading for all women, who have lost or who are risk for the loss of their mother
Motherless Daughters: The Legacy Of Loss by award winning journalist Hope Edelman is an informative and expertly contributive documentation of the psychological and spiritual effects the death of a mother might have on the life and psychological well being of a daughter. Deftly presenting how the absence of a nurturing maternal hand could influence the development of a daughter's self identity, and what might result from the loss of such a role model and source of emotional support, Motherless Daughters tells of why living beyond a mother's final year reminds a daughter of her exquisite separateness; how present-day relationships are defined by past losses; what the "unmothered" woman can do to reclaim her autonomy and restore her connection to the family of the motherline; and how to understand grief as an ongoing journey. Very strongly recommended reading for all women, who have lost or who are risk for the loss of their mother, Motherless Daughters is to be especially commended or its outstanding presentation of insightful and helpful material for coping with the death of a mother.
5-0 out of 5 stars Mother Loss Through Mental Illness and Abandonment
In my work as a therapist, memoir coach, and memoir writer about mother-abandonment, I have found Hope Edelman's research and knowledge a valuable asset in helping my clients and students understand the lifelong effects of mother loss, and the long path to finding the love, and the "mother" within oneself. I was blessed to meet Hope in person recently and to hear her speak. Our subjects are similar--mother loss--and she presents with such compassion her findings about the differences between women who have lost their mothers in death to those whose mothers are alive but are rejecting, uninterested, abandoning, or mentally ill--perhaps many of the above adjectives apply all at once.
5-0 out of 5 stars worth its weight in gold
I lost my mom 2 years ago and read this book for the first time shortly after her passing. I refer to it now and then for comfort. The book has been a crutch that got my through the first holidays following my mom's passing when I couldn't be with my family due to geographic distance.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hard...but worth it.
Foucault is one of the most important thinkers of our time. He is a historian, a cultural theorist, and a philosopher. When looking at the History of Sexuality Foucault does not see powerful figures repressing sex, but actually encouraging people to discuss it. This discourse was encouraged so that sex could be controlled and this discourse actually created what is today called sexuality--a norm that we believe to be culturally independent or universal. The belief that sex is repressed is only another strategy formed through a series of power relationships that desires for people to keep discussing sex in order that this "sex" can be classified and controled. For example: Encouraging a discourse on the act of sodomy enabled a catagory of homosexual to be created. Instead of sodomy being a act that a person may engage in, that person instantly became a homosexual, his sexuality constituting his entire being--how he/she should talk, act, and live in general. The discourse that was encourage to develop around sex enable power to classify and control sexuality--power actually created what we believe to be the "real sexuality". Foucault explains the complicated relationship between power and discourse that developed a set of complicated and sometimes contradicting--and always changing--ideas about what sex is and how we are to approach it.
3-0 out of 5 stars Influential and important work, absolutely dreadful translation
I would concur with the Marquis point regarding the quality of the translation, which is obfuscating at best, and downright misleading at its worst. For those with the French, go with the original text (French title "La Volente de Savoir"). But I thought it worth mentioning that there does apparently exist an alternative translation of the work by a Robert Hurley, which has been published rather recently under the title "The History of Sexuality: the Will to Knowledge" (ISBN: 0140268685). Unfortunately I haven't had an opportunity to check out the new translation, though I would love to know whether it's any better.
1-0 out of 5 stars Abysmal
All Volumes Reviewed: Is this the work of Michel Foucault, the author of "Order of Things," "Discipline and Punish," and "Archeology of Knowledge?" Surely, this must be a hoax. Foucault is notoriously provocative, keenly insightful, and always virulent. So what happened here? Hardly much of a history, anything but provocative, entirely pedestrian, already outdated, and woefully incomplete. Accessibility is not a problem, unlike "Archeology of Knowledge," but truly lacking in information, perspective, and relevance. Compare, for example, this trite and superficial reading with Compton's expansive and exhaustive "Homosexuality and Civilization." After all, Foucault was gay and into sado-masochism. The two are incomparable. A complete waste of time (since I was sure Foucault had something quixotic to write over three volumes), but hope never materialized into reality. PASS. ... Read more
