I've started a car audio retail business with my brother.He's the technical guy, and I'm the business guy (working on my MBA now).I thought that learning a lot more about the technical aspect of the business could be nothing but good for me, so I picked up this book (the only book on car audio that Border's carried).The book is organized like this:

A terrific introduction for the racer who doesn't have a PhD
This book is very specific in its approach.It goes over the broad theory of aerodynamics as it applies to racing, and then explains each component of a contemporary race car, covering the front end (airdams, splitters and spoilers), the back end (wings), the underside (underbody aerodynamics), and other miscellaneous aero aids.In each chapter, he walks through a host of different tests to show not just which configurations are going to work best, but also why they are going to work best.

Bicycling Science
Through history of Bicycles.Lots of details, too many for most readers interest. Many, many pages of small print could probably be condensed down to less than 200 pages of a larger font.Worth reading for a complete bicylce geek other wise time would probably be better spent reading other bicycle books.However, does provide some interesting trivia such as a person could pedal a 100 miles on a gallon of milk and gave a distance for a gallon of petrol, though I forgot the distance.

Unpardonable Error
Unfortunately, my copy of edition 3 fell open to page 81, in which the author compares forces from a piston engine to forces generated by living tissue. Unfortunately, this type of comparison is often completely invalid, particularly when the force is accompanied by zero motion in the direction of the force. For example, if the combustion force is replaced by a highly compressed spring, and if the crank is balanced exactly at top dead center, the spring will never "get tired" of exerting its force. In contrast, a human leg WILL get tired, even though no motion occurs. This is because chemical energy is consumed to exert the force even in the absence of motion.
Empirical Bicycle Science, not Theoretical Bicycle Engineering
Prof. Wilson is well-respected in the engineering community, and this book is the best we have on the topic.Alas, even though Americans can land a man on the moon, we don't currently have a comprehensive, accurate computer simulation of the bicycle, rider, terrain, and atmospheric condition suitable for design optimization.Bicycle science is still very empirical!Contrast this with automotive engineering, aerospace engineering, watercraft engineering, and rail travel engineering (although to be fair, there is no Defense Department money for bicycle advancements).As a systems and mechanical engineer in industry (but not the bicycle industry) I've written numerous computer simulations for all kinds of machines and processes; my engineering doctoral dissertation was on the detailed computer simulation of a modified gas turbine engine (published as Theory and Design of the New Rational Combustion Engine)--so it rather amazes me that we don't have something comparable for bicycle design.Prof. Wilson candidly states on p. 365 that "...expert application of engineering methods has played very little part in bicycle design." and on p. 282 contributing author Papadopoulos states that "...most [dynamic] analyses are incorrect, either because of faulty methods or because of errors in algebra" (and this at a time when theoretical physicists are promolgating theories to the thirteenth decimal place).

Simply the very best book on Rochester carbs!
Rebuilding a Rochester can be a little intimidating.Let's face it, you can't successfully work on something that you don't understand.If you read this book before you begin,you will understand what the function is of every part that you'll see on your Qj. If you've rebuilt a few Rochesters before and need to fine tune a Quadrajet for a performance engine, this book will answer most all of the questions that you might have.

Wish I could give it less that 1 star
I purchased this book to find out how to repair the heater and change the fuel filter on my 1990 diesel F250.It offered no help on either.Trees have fallen in the forest for no good reason.

This book is a lemon!
Chiltons books used to help me rebuild engines, transmissions, axles and more.They were very detailed and helpful.When I opened this one to try to troubleshoot the transmission, it says the only thing I am smart enough to do is check the fluid level.Beyond that, I need to go to a mechanic. Chilton continues to be a seething hotbed of mediocrity
I have "shade tree'd" my way through over 40 years of Haynes, Chilton and Motor repair manuals. Chilton has gone from being a moderately good reference source for technical data in the early 60's to a few hundred sheets of disposable shop rags. The offering in question has an almostcomplete lack of diagnostic information, and is nothing more than a list ofvague instructions on how to take your truck apart. Read more

Excellent Reference
Back in the late 1970s, I restored a 1966 2+2 (Signal Flare Red, Pony interior, V-8, four-speed).This book was my bible, and it served me well.I'm sure that today, after thirty years, there are better references available.However, this is still an excellent primer on early Mustangs.

Mustang Does It, but Mr. Miller misses the mark...
Thumbnail version: 'Mustang Does It' is an OK choice if you want a book with large pages and lots of pretty pictures. Unfortunately, the original photos & text are seriously flawed in terms of their informational value. And even if you're merely looking for Mustang-themed entertainment, there are much better books available at lower cost. The Ultimate Authority
I was happy to see "Mustand Does It" by Ray Miller back in print. I was fortunate to have gotten a copy 20 years ago, and it is STILL the most comprehensive Mustang book that I have seen. There is not much more to say other than it is the best source for settling arguements such as "It is too a real 64 1/2!". There are many detail photos of the unique features of each year's production models. No details are overlooked. Read more

Only if you are a complete newbie
I bought this book based on rave reviews on Amazon.com. However, I pretty disappointed. It's nicely produced and has lots of pretty good pictures, but it should be considered only a bare-bones introduction to sheet metal work for beginners. It very briefly covers all the basic topics related to making sheet metal items for car bodies, aircraft, etc. But it does not go into nearly enough detail to cover any of these topics. It's more like an overview of basic tools and techniques. You could find all this information just by surfing the web. I give it a thumbs down.

I found this book the very best covering creating complex metal forms out of flat metal sheet. Anyone interestaed in forming unique parts or limited series sheet metal products will find a wealth of information. Anybody interested in Aircraft construction and repair, automotive prototypes, racing cars and compond-curve fabrication will find this book of extreme interest. Best book for beginner
I only have a few metal working tools in my garage but I enjoy the craft and I have spent quite a bit of time learning the tricks. This is the best book I have found on sheet metal. Insightful !
This is a great manufacturing love story in which Toyota, an automaker clearly in love with its product, decides to go after the U.S. luxury car buyer, a suitor who has repeatedly ignored its advances. To get America's attention, Toyota must first re-invent itself. It must make itself more handsome (through better styling), improve its physique (be faster, stronger and need less maintenance) and prove its financial management skill (by selling great cars for less). Because time is fleeting and the buyer has many other suitors (Mercedes Benz, Jaguar, Nissan, Volvo), Toyota must work fast before its intended lover makes an irrevocable decision and buys someone else's car. Like some other love stories, this is repetitive and suffers from some plain old sloppy editing. But it makes you want to test-drive a Lexus to see what causes such a sensation. We recommend this book to CEOs and sales and marketing executives who dream of producing revolutionary, successful products for the global marketplace.
