Pat Summitt has been called a living legend. As head coach of the University of Tennessee Lady Vols, Summitt has taken her NCAA Division 1 women's basketball team to back-to-back national championships in 1996 and 1997, and five titles in a 10-year span. In Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good enough to read once.
Reach for the Summit was an easy read.My goal was to read the book for its explanation of the 12 disciplines which are used for all activities in life, not just for basketball. There were more examples of the disciplins than philosophy. I am sure if one is passonate about basketball they will get more out of it than I did.Disciplines were common sense.Nothing new, but the examples were interesting enough. I thought enough of it togive it to my 14 year son to read.I believe he will get more out of it than I did, simply because of his love of sports. He will benefit from seeing the coach's side of view. Good enough to read through once.

2-0 out of 5 stars OK, but not for everyone
YES, I GAVE IT ONLY 2 STARS! I have read alot of motivational books in my life time but this one leaves you empty. Patt Summitt does not give a "one-size fits all" approach to obtaining Life's goals as she suggest.Pat Summitt gives these long drawn out stories of her coaching experience and players experience then, at the very end, ties it to a generic principle of leadership that has been rehash by hundred of other motivational book writers.I'm not hating on her leadership or abilities. She has proven herself a dynamic coach. If you're a HS/college couch of any sport then this is the book for you! but for the rest of us her approaches to leadership do not necessarily translates to pearls of wisdom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reach for the Summit
The book Reach for the Summit, by Pat Summit, is one of my all time favorite books. Pat shares some of her most intimate and personal struggles and she shows how she got to the top. Pat Summit is the most winningest coah is the history of the WNCAA, she even has a basketball statium named after her, The Summit.

1-0 out of 5 stars Why you no longer need ABC News
I recieved this book from my father because I certainly would never have bought it myself. The premise of the book falls flat on it face with some simple fact checking. The premise being that politics and political coverage is freak show that is solely dominated by the Drudge report. He devotes a whole chapter as to how the freak show destroyed Al Gore - except Gore managed to win the popular vote. And if you give any credence to the continuing revelations of massive voting irregularities in the past two presidential elections (not covered by ABC, because Mr. Dudge said nothing about this) his whole theory goes out the window.

5-0 out of 5 stars Refreshingly balanced!
I expected this to be more of a religious-type book:"THE Bible says...."It was nothing like that!!!One of my pleasant surprises was that the author is pro-choice!
5-0 out of 5 stars A Woman's Worth
I highly recommend this book for any woman who is graduating college, getting married, having children, dealing with divorce, coping with aging parents or feeling completely overthe edge. It's is a feel good book that makes a woman feel completely understood and worthy. It reminds us who we truly are and how much value we contribute. When everyone or everything around you leads you to feel spent and worthless, this is the book to read. It's the book to treasure and refer to whenver life gets out of control. I've given it to my best friends and they love it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Feel good feminity, if she's so worthy then how come ...
Williamson does a great job describing the goddess and valuing our feminity. Readers will get that usual warm fuzzy feeling that Marianne is so good at evoking. In the dozen plus years since writing this book it seems that her own advice just doesn't cut it anymore than weekly psychotherapy sessions do for others. Perhaps the "imbalance of male/female energies" in the world is to blame. Williamson's lectures or "ministry" seem to reflect a segment of the female population that are highly intelligent, well-educated, articulate, charismatic, attractive, and a basket of neurotic therapy junkies. There is a distinction between maintaining well-being and indulging in self-help addiction at the expense of your life. Williamson's Woman's Worth appeals to an audience of modern women seeking solace or hiding their desire for an M.R.S. degree. Jean Shinoda Bolen's "Goddesses in Everywoman" is a real classic from the early 1990's. If you're looking to have Jungian archetypes on a feminine divine force empower you woman-ness ... pick up Bolen's books instead. For all Marianne's mantra of women power ... she still grips in her latest book about turning 50, having no man in her life, and the other usual complainsts since her lectures on metaphysics began in 1983 ... mainly about men leaving her for someone they love enough to marry. Williamson's "student of life" content, heavily borrowed from all sorts of Bay Area New Age "stuff", is great for anyone who wants to scratch the surface of spirituality rather than deepen into it. My humble advice: take-up Buddhism, see a real therapist, and listen to women who are living the life YOU want in different areas (love, career, health, etc).

4-0 out of 5 stars Live from Caltech, It's Professor Richard Feynman ! ! !
Six Wonderful Pieces! This is my first and favorite unabridged audio collection of Feyman's Lectures on Physics which he delivered during the month February in 1962 at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). These events occurred 21 months before and 21 miles away from where I was born here in Southern California! I eagerly listen to all of these tapes over & over & over again - reveling in his style of teaching (humorous, witty, and humble). Much of the quantitative eludication of subject material surpasse my comprehension. Nonetheless, I just relax during my long commute to work and absorb whatever sinks in. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars As good as even Garrison Keillor can get
Garrison Keillor's "Horrors" is not only one of Keillor's great works of all time, but it is a marvelous take on Halloween itself. This cassette series has everything fans of Keillor could possibly want from brilliant, unique stories to sharp, witty skits to wonderfully appropriate music for Halloween. The best thing, in my opinion, on this series, however, is Keillor's unsurpassed reading of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven". To sum up, this cassette series is enjoyable year around and is a must-buy for any fan of Garrison Keillor and "A Prarie Home Companion". ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars OK
I found this tape just OK.It was not what I expected.I liked Homecoming so much better.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Price of Nice
This audiotape was just so enlightening to our whole family. It was like "WOW" this is us exactly. After recently experiencing a Family Week at The Meadows where we also experienced an awakening about feelings and how important it is to "feel"in order to be your real self and have intimate relationships. This tape reinforced all of this information and then even more to help a person become who he really is.I only wish I had had this information before I had my family.Unfortunately, sometimes it takes a family crisis before you really look at the dysfunctions in a family that goes from generation to generation.I will share these tapes with everyone I come in contact with.John Bradshaw did an excellent job - I also enjoyed the humor he used.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for those who want to be real in life
This two-tape package brings you another Bradshaw workshop that shines with John's humor, wit, and insight. John shares, in a warm and personal style, his insight about the cost and danger of being"super-nice" while sacrificing being real in life. John pointsout that the articifially super-nice persona prevents genuine intimacy andsharing. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved the book and enjoyed the CD
This is great book on investing and I highly recommend it.The CD is great to listen to in the car and gets all the points across.I suggest that you also get the book. It's way better than the Graham books - which are very dated - they give you the tools to buy stocks selling at below book value - not a lot of those around any more.Besides Buffett got over Graham years ago.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Complete Joke
This book tries to reverse-engineer Warren Buffett's investment strategy and does a horrible job of it. Like all of Mary Buffett's books, this is long on hype and short on credibility.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Poor title, great audio book!
While the title and beginning of this audio book suggest a focus on verbal combat/conflicts, the content is important and applicable in a much wider scope of situations. It is very impressive the range of topics covered in this relatively brief presentation. While the audio format allows greater clarity when explaining tone of voice and voice stress issues, for those that are more visual, I strongly suggest taking notes. This audio book offers great ideas toward helping you communicate whatever it is you want to say. Some of the topics covered include matching your sensory style to your audience, preventing reflex arguments, making your voice more pleasing (without spending considerable time or money), giving feedback (positive and negative) in a way it will be best received, and, of course, disarming verbal attacks (without pissing off your attacker).

2-0 out of 5 stars learn to spar verbally with people...not worth sparring with
i found the book interesting enough to give a few hours to...because Elgin's really studied this carefully, but what really struck me loud and clear as i read on is that she misses the most OBVIOUS (and most emotionally healthy, or martically artistic) option for how to deal with verbally aggressive/abusive people:TO GET AWAY FROM THEM!(and she forgets that SAYING NOTHING...i.e. not engaging...is a form of verbal communication too.)the "presupposition" (she loves that word) she completely misses is that people don't always HAVE to stay (stuck) in verbally abusive relationships, and she never really suggests, either subtly or overtly, that people can leave.her basic unspoken assumption is that you should stay and learn how to spar better verbally so as not to be verbally taken advantage of and trampled.(rather a conservative point of view for a "modern" feminist, wouldn't you say?)5-0 out of 5 stars Audio presentation offers something the written page doesn't
For those familiar with the "Gentle Art" series this audio offers an added dimension in understanding and incorporating the skills of gentle art communication into your own vocabularly. An essential part of the Gentle Art communication skills are tone of voice and stresses that are placed on each word and this audio is exceptionally helpful in demonstrating the content that is being discussed. It will also serve as an excellent introduction to the material for anyone who enjoys audio books. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Solid Foundation
The Pimsleur philosophy is that one should start learning a foreign language similarly to a first language. Without writing anything, and without detailed grammatical discussion you hear and repeat until the language begins to feel natural. This made a lot of sense to me when I thought about how much English grammar I "know" through experience but can't easily articulate because I never studied much grammar in school. For instance, could you immediately explain when it's correct to use the word "some" vs "any"?
3-0 out of 5 stars Overrated
Pimsleur is far overrated. True, it teaches (formal) conversation skills, but lacks a text, and costs too much. It's also quite boring. I reccomend the Rosetta Stone instead. It teaches you how to read, and in Level 2 it contains a decent amount of conversation vocab. Also, it can analyze your speech and *graphically* show you your pronunciation vs. the correct pronounciation.
4-0 out of 5 stars Terrific program for beginners -- with reservations
I've gone through all 3 full sets of Pimsleur Mandarin Chinese. If you'd have asked me immediately after I'd finished them what I thought of the series, I'd have given it 5 stars without hesitation. However, after spending the past year trying to advance past what I've learned via the Pimsleur series, I've come across some reservations which prevent me from giving it a 5 star review anymore. While I do feel the Pimsleur method is incredibly useful and (despite its seeming simplicity) very innovative, I think their Mandarin Chinese series also suffers from simply being "plugged in" to the standard Pimsleur format, rather than receiving the customization that would help users truly understand the Chinese language, which has many quirks unique to it.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my all-time favorites.
I've read this book at various points in my life and it never fails to ring true. In crappy times it was the voice of clarity and confidence, and with the existing empowerment in the day-to-day, it serves as validation and a nice boost to want to do more. This book should be required reading for every teenaged girl.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a treasure
I have read many many books, and I have to say that this is one of my absolute favorites. This is a book of the highest quality.Don't be fooled from the title, this is not a sappy how to love yourself book. This is a straight forward, intense account of the world around us as we know it. Yet in a way, that I believe only Gloria Steinem could tell it.She is at once brilliant, insightful, comforting, and angering. Her book made me see life through new eyes, better eyes. Steinem's book is also so obviously well researched, in fact startling facts and statistics reside on every page.If you want to feel passion and rightous anger in your soul, or if you want to read a book that will open your eyes, read this one.Books of this caliber really do not come around that often.

5-0 out of 5 stars The political is personal... and likewise
Like a beacon of light, this book provided me with the inspiration slowly draining from my activism. So often, as a woman, I feel I must concentrate on the characteristics of myself that are celebrated by this patriarchal society to be taken seriously. I really needed a feminist voice to remind me of the freedom of self that is the goal of social equality.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars New info every time I listen
I usually get tired of instructive CDs after a while, have to put them away for a month or so before listening to them again. However, this CD I listen to over and over again for inspiration. It might have to do with Sonia's voice, which is enthusiastic, animated, and just plain sweet. I found the audio qualitiy excellent.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book combined with ?Psychic Gifts? can change your Life
I really liked this book. I am an avid reader and would recommend adding this book to your must read list. Another book that really impressed me is Psychic Gifts in the Christian Life - Tools to Connect, by Tiffany Snow, pub. 2003. In this time ofincreasing awareness for the need to help our relationships, workplace, family, self and environment, these two books are at the forefront of giving us the tools to do so - not only by positive reinforcements, but in the case of"Psychic Gifts," showing we have a Divine birthright to access the supernatural in our lives, and how to tap into that. I encourage you to Keep Reading, apply what you learn, and be a force for good in your part of the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Brilliant and Humorous Expose of Deluded Science
There is little I can add to the excellent comments already presented here. The only thing that could have improved this volume would have been a bibliography.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent, curious collection
Gardner, in his usual fine style, tackles biorhythms, ESP, quantum theory, black holes, faith healing, and much more. The collection also includes letters from readers and the author's replies, which make the book especially intriguing.A large collection of fascinating topics.

5-0 out of 5 stars The simple, effective arguments against pseudoscience
I first read this book almost twenty years ago and even though some of the events and principals have faded into oblivion, the basic theme has not. While there are some negative consequences of science, in many ways they are secondary to the enormous benefits. The number of ways in which the scientific approach has benefited our lives are clearly too numerous to mention. And yet, there are those who, largely for personal gain, choose to ignore it when it is advantageous to do so. When that advantage is financial, we can at least understand them, even while we consider them despicable. The saddest of all are the ignorant masses who fall victim to the nonsense that the charlatans dispense. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great supplement to learning French
This program is great for doing what most language courses forget to do:teach you how to SPEAK the language.Sure, you can learn all your verb conjugations and vocabulary, but there is no better way to really learn the language than from native speakers.I learned this valuable lesson when I visited Mexico after years of Spanish classes, at both high school and college level.I found that I had to relearn the language according to how people truly speak it.My advice to anyone is try this program; don't expect lists of vocabulary words or verb conjugation tables--you can get those elsewhere--but rather an immersion into the way French people really talk.Enjoy!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Bad But I Still Prefer Complete Behind the Wheel French
Christian Aubert's SmartFrench isn't really all that bad.Sure, it can be tough to decipher and it does get boring at times.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful!
I found these CDs excellent. They have really helped me bone up for a trip to France.I have a degree in French and have looked high and low for some review material that is fun and challenging enough and have finally found it in these CDs.I noticed an immediate improvement in my pronunciation and confidence speaking French.Merci! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best you will ever read
This is an easy to read book, which managed to make profound points about life, pain, and fate.I enjoyed reading the first part of the book and learning about what it was like to be in such a hellish place (a concentration camp), and yet still being able to be positive about life. What more can I say than its an excellent book?

5-0 out of 5 stars I learned: All the Auschwitz survivors, including the author, had something significant yet to do with their lives!
MAN'S SEARCH FOR MEANING
5-0 out of 5 stars fascinating!
this is simply a must read for those interested in the human experience. Some of the positions concluded in this book may not be the only way to think on the issues involved, but still, this book is a great psychological workout with deep insights. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars War, but from the "other" one
These days, most war stories are from World War II, or the Holocaust. With many survivors and many horrific stories to tell, hundreds of books have been written on the topic and read by the public. "All Quiet on the Western Front" is a story about the "other" war, though, granted, it was written before WWII.
5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ
Its simply THE anti-war book of all time. Influential and controversial in its day, its every bit as apt for Iraq as it was for the fields of Flanders. A book every educated individual must have read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Does art reflect or shape culture?
"Bombardment, barrage, curtain-fire, mines, gas, tanks, machine-guns, hand-grenades - words, words, but they hold the horror of the world."All Quiet on the Western Front, by Erich Maria Remarque, is a novel about WWI.Paul Bäumer is a German peasant on the front lines. He is the narrator and protagonist of this literary work of art.Good art reflects the culture in which it was created.Great art shapes culture. This book does both.
