The Whirling Dervish of Dorothy Gilman's imagination kept me readingBUTit was not untilchapter 15that the title figure emerges ~ as a captive. In this 9th *adventure* the wisdom of this Sufi holy man gives pause to the two on a secret mission for the CIA and strengthens their resolve. The reader must also have resolve, to sort out the author's thoughts about international politics & covert machinations.

Mrs Pollifax is sent on an assignment to accompany a CIA agent on a mission to verify the identity of 7 foreign agents who are sympathetic to the Western Sahara independence cause. She has photos of the 7, and at least one might end up being an imposter.Along the way, unexpected danger occurs as her fellow CIA agent makes her nervous, and their first foreign contact is murdered.Mrs Pollifax is put into peril and is chased through the desert.

This is a good book which gives you first hand impression about how laws are design by authority.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent review for our present members of congress and anyone with the interest to put in the time.
This is very interesting about Montesquieu.Every member of congress should read it and take it to heart. It appears that the majority of our founding fathers did read it and take it very seriously. It is something that all Americans who are interested in our government should consider reading. It is amazingly quite easy to read though, I would suggest having a good dictionary handy while reading it.Some of our members of congress I just do not believe would understand, even if someone was reading the dictionary for them. That is a sad commentary about the facts we all must face, however.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the great book people seem to think it is.
This is a book that could (should?) have faded into history without being a great loss to the world. Yes, there are a few interesting bits of political philosophy, but they're far and few between, and mainly either just thrown out as Montesquieu's personal opinions with little to no evidence or examination, or flimsily based on historical examples. As a reader, I didn't find most of his arguments (where he didn't seem to be contradicting himself, which happens frequently) very convincing. This was obviously written with the 18th century French salon crowd in mind, and reads as such. I'm sure it provided a lot of aristocrats with conversation fodder to make them appear intelligent and educated at the time, but these days it just seems like an antiquated bit of history.

5-0 out of 5 stars I really liked it !
It was a very good book for someone who needs to build confidence when dealing with people. I enjoyed it and have read many books on meeting people and getting over shyness. If you want to meet women and are shy there is a great book called 'How To 'Pick Up' Beautiful Women' by John Eagan. It has helped me get over my shyness with women. Which is somening you can not put a price on.
5-0 out of 5 stars A self-improvement classic!
If your career or volunteer activities require you to interact withlots of different types of people and, more specifically, to get them to do what you want them to do, read this book!Lest there be any confusion, Giblin does not suggest that his readers manipulate, badger or cojole people into doing things; rather, he teaches how to change oneself so that people will want to see things your way.H.t.H.C.a.P.i.D.w.P preaches self-improvement, not strong-arming.

4-0 out of 5 stars It worked, not as planned, but worked
I bought this CD for my 9 year old nephew and I have to be honest that he hated it.BUT it still worked, I told him to learn them and we'd quit listening to the CD and he learned at lightening speed just to get away from it.The tunes can be a little folksy but I thought it was a good way to learn and it does stick in your head.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Explicit, Detailed and Valuable!
Paget's "How to be a great lover" provides a lot of explicit and detailed instructions, and descriptions. She discussed a broad spectrum of topics from sexually transmitted diseases to oral and manual stimulation. My husband and I are experienced and for us most of the information was not something new. We did learn new things however and it was nice to read a book written by so experienced and genuinely interested in sex woman. We would like to recommend as well scientist Ritz' bestseller "Scientfically guaranteed male multiple orgasms and ultimate sex" because it provides breakthrough information, which made a great difference for us in bed.

This is a very good book which I liked and recommend to everyone. It contains a lot of information that I am sure you will find interesting and valuable.

5-0 out of 5 stars worth reading
I just bought this book a few days ago after reading the positive reviews. It was definitely worth reading! The best part about the book is the tone she uses.It really does come across as girlfriend-to-girlfriend.It's not clinical (which is a turn-off) or condescending in tone - she doesn't act like a sex guru speaking down to the plebian undersexed. She's very encouraging and her main goal is to give you confidence as a lover.

5-0 out of 5 stars Parent Effectiveness Training
Once in a while one comes across a book that is life-changing. Parent Effectiveness Training is such a book. Having read many other books on child raising, only to find that the methods and techniques are short-term at best or positively harmful, this book provides a welcome change. It makes a lot of sense and although parents may find it difficult to change the habits of a lifetime, Dr Gordon provides practical answers that we found very quickly started to yield positive results. In particular, the atmosphere in our family has changed for the better and we feel prepared for the way ahead. Finally, this book is not just about raising children. It has changed the way I look at all my interactions with family, friends and colleagues, and has given me a new perspective on the world. ... Read more

Makes a few accurate observations about boy behavior and its origins, however, the book leans a little too much toward "feminization" of boys in preventing behavioral problems. This may be the politically-correct way to help boys, but not the productive way.The book is also on the new york times best-seller list, this is significant, because that publication is notorious for being the most anti-male biased newspaper in the united states.

4-0 out of 5 stars Are you raising boys today?
If you are raising boys today I suggest reading this book before they enter the school system! Is he in school and saying things like, "that's gay" or "fag"? Sure he is, we raise them that way and don't even know it.

The author makes some fantastic points in the first hundred or so pages in this book.He then makes those points over and over again until they have lost all meaning.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Well Presented Theory
I'm a big fan of ancient history. I remember when I went to a university open day toward the end of high school. I wandered over to the archaeology wing, and in a glass case they had a genuine Sumerian cuneiform, one of the oldest pieces of writing in known history. It was only a little one, but I remember being mesmerized by it. I'm also a big fan of alternative histories, because I do have a feeling there is more to prehistory than there appears, and have read quite a few of the "essential" reads.
5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book
This was a serious and thought provoking look into facts that modern science wants no light shed on. Modern geography, anthropology, and especially Egyptology are turned completely on there heads by the undisputable evidence put forth in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Engrossing - Historical Fiction at its Best!
I absolutely loved this novel. As a historical fiction "junkie," its a rare treat to come across a book like this. Spanning almost 1800 years, Rutherfurd gripping creates and traces 3 familial lineages through a history few in the west have encountered to any depth. Characterizations are completely human, and exhibit real complexities in terms of strength, religious devotion, struggle, cruelty, sin, and redemption. This is Russian and Ukrainian history as seen through the lives of ordinary people.
2-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing
I live and work in Russia, among the Russians, speaking Russian. This book came highly recommended to me by an expat colleague of mine. I have a rule (and never came closer to breaking it as I did during my many attempts to read this book) that I always finish every book I start. At my breaking point, I logged onto this website to read the reviews which encouraged me to read to the bitter end. Suffice to say that almost 4 months after starting the book I eventually turned the final page yesterday and could only sigh in absolute disappointment.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not Quite Sarum, But Close
I read this shortly after I read Michner's Poland and recommend that. There is a lot of cross over which helped the understanding of both books.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Que Sera Sera"
I checked this out of the library and read it on the way to Australia to visit my daughter during her study abroad semester in Brisbane. She read it while we sailed the Whitsundays and dove on the Great Barrier Reef - well, not when we we actually in the water. Before whe started reading it, in conversations I regularly sited Bryson having commented on many of our topics, by saying something, "Just like in the book," or, "Bryson talks about that in the book." A little like Seinfeld having done so many topics, that we live parts of them in our daily lives. Anyway, we left the book on a plane. So, I'll buy a copy for the library and one for me - money well spent. It was a great introduction and punctuated much of the trip. A bus driver in Brisbane was actually whistling "Que Sera Sera," which,I think, was mentioned in the book. I'll find out when I read it again. I'd read Bryson's Sort History of Nearly Everything a couple of years ago. It's also a good read.

1-0 out of 5 stars Audio CD review: His prose is annoying when spoken aloud
You get your money's worth here--there are a ton of CDs in this audio book. Unfortunately, I found Bryson's prose (which I enjoyed a lot when reading silently, as I have done with his other books) to be greatly irritating when spoken aloud. To me, he sounds kind of 'affected' in parts, and sometimes there is a sort of "moist" sound when he pronounces words. Hard to describe until you hear the CD, but trust me on this one. I think a lot of the positive reviews on here are for the book, and not the CD. I would stick with the written word on this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why I read it twice...a review in two parts.
I took this book with me on a recent trip to Central America and absolutely loved it.While there is less narrative flow than, say, A Walk in the Woods, reading Bryson's thoughts on Sydney harbor, Australian-rules football, former Prime Minister Harold Holt (peace be upon him), forever walking through Canberra, and his near run-in's with a seemingly endless list of nasty (and apparently deadly) native animals was engaging and thoroughly enjoyable. He does this all the while encountering some pretty terrific and endearing folks, drinking many Victorian Bitters, and relaying an impressive and affectionate recounting of Australian history. There really is a lot to like here.So much so that upon finishing the book while still in Central America, and realizing that I committed the unpardonable sin of only bringing one book with me to read (you try finding a decent bookstore in Central America), I turned to the first chapter and started all over again. And it was equally engrossing, witty, and informative if not more-so.I can think of no higher compliment for a book and I recommend it whole-heartedly. ... This is not a collection of encouraging essays on simplicity, nor is it perky advice on how to get by with less. Timothy Miller, a clinical psychologist, sets out to uncover in recent scientific studies the roots of the insatiable appetite of humans. After establishing our instinctual need for More, he pursues its destructive consequences and then he outlines a methodology for transcending the cycle. His infinitely pragmatic advice centers on his elaboration of Compassion, Attention, and Gratitude. Here is perennial wisdom transformed into practical science. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Flawed Tone, but Solid, Livable Strategies
I first read How to Want What You Have many years ago, and I remember being incredibly excited by it. Miller's advice for practicing compassion, attention, and gratitude has stuck with me since. Upon re-reading it, however, I noticed a subtle dogmatic preference for Cognitive Therapy that turned me off just a little. Don't get me wrong, I have loved and used Cognitive Therapy in my own life ever since I discovered it in David D. Burns' Feeling Good. But I've also found other methodologies like Neuro-Linguistic Programming, Behavior Therapy, and Positive Psychology to be scientifically rigorous and just as effective. Whether a function of bias or simply the fact that a lot of progress has been made in these other areas in the 10 years since its publication, Miller's book seems to rely too strongly on Cognitive Therapy-at the seeming exclusion of other strategies.
5-0 out of 5 stars Practical advise for the hectic modern world we live in
this is some very basic insight to living a simple, content, fullfilling life -- Miller points out, in humorous, interesting ways, the things we already know to be true, but in our haste to live up to marketing hype that surrounds us, we forget.

2-0 out of 5 stars More of an ad blitz than a teach yourself rapid reading.
Picked this book up with an interest in increasing my reading speed, but was disappointed when the book turned out to be one big ad for the Evelyn Wood Speed Reading Courses. Most of the book was devoted to informing the reader how fast and efficiently they could study, and how successful their courses are. There was very little instruction and what was there was vague. The book ended up being of negligible help to my reading speed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read over and over until you get it.
Every junior high, high school, and college student should read this book. It takes lots of practice to learn how to do it proficiently but once you've got it figured out you'll love how fast you can read and how well you can retain the information.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nice paperweight
I read this book because it claimed to help increase reading by 50%.I thought that I was a strong reader.I read about 230 words per minute.Well, after reading this book, I read about 250 words per minute.20 words wasn't worth it! ... Read more

Editorial Review

A Rhodes scholar with a healthy ego, the young idealist George Stephanopoulos thought he was ready for the obscure governor of Arkansas. But soon after he signed on as his presidential-campaign manager, the odds of Clinton's triumph soared, and so did the chance for calamity via Gennifer Flowers and other scandals. Stephanopoulos scrambled behind the scenes, squelching rumors, spinning major news organizations, artfully knifing Clinton rivals, and second-guessing public opinion--lessons that would serve him well when Clinton won.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars George Stephanopoulos' version of CYA
First, my standard disclaimer: I am a political moderate and social conservative. This book is an average look at what happens in political inner circles, specifically the Clinton white house. I was a little disappointed that Stephanopoulos did not take more risks to write about subjects that the general public did not already know. It seemed that much of the reason for the book was for the author to exonerate himself from any wrongdoing.

4-0 out of 5 stars St. George And The Dragon
George Stephanopoulos' memoir of working in the White House during Bill Clinton's first term in office makes you feel like a fly on the wall of the Oval Office. Written in that hypersmart, jargon-fluent style familiar to "West Wing" viewers, "All Too Human" is an engaging, candid companion to readers of any political stripe, in part an impassioned defense of one of America's most infuriatingly bipolar personalities, in part a cautionary tale of power trumping principle.
5-0 out of 5 stars MY political education
The subtitle of this wonderful memoir taught me more about politics in 400 pages than I'd learned in 40 years. A diehard liberal and a political fanatic, someone whose views would normally make me sneer and scoff, Stephanopolous paints a picture of the stresses, ins-and-outs, spin, activities and the vital scope of the world inside the Oval Office. Every newsworthy event or program is canvassed for its political ramafications; the very definition and refinement of the word "politics" is reinforced on every page; the mistakes that lead to triumphs, and the feel-good preparations that lead to disasters are all here in stark detail. Stephanopolous proves himself a very sensible man, and even his staunchly liberal views are sidenotes to the greater energies, arguments and preparations that occur inside the White House. I occasionally disliked S's speaking his own platform (which he did sparingly), or telling how political parties are constructed to blunt the other even when their plans are sensible, but all in all I learned more from this book about the workings inside the White House than from all my prior readings and public education. ...
