5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book!!!
This book really helped mer to understand doiing a reading assessment and i felt extremely comfortable doing the assessment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Basic Reading Inventory
Immediate results from the assessments. Not as easy to use as Marie Clay's running Records, but all inclusive. The CD-ROM is great for reproducables, but many pages have to be pulled out of the book and put in page protectectors. Still a great method to diagnose and assess children's reading. One of those college books you will keep.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reading Assement
This is an excellent book for professionals who can take the time to learn to give this kind of informal reading assessment. The format is very organized, clear, and easy to read. The author has numerous years of experience as a teacher/educator and it is apparent in the assesment he has designed. The information the assessment generates is very useful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for teachers!
This is a great book for teachers to learn more about dealing with children who have exceptionalities. If you are a new teacher or an experienced teacher dealing with inclusion, this book will be perfect for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book If You Want An Intro to Special Education
I love this book!I purchased a used copy in 2001 to help prepare for my (then) upcoming Massachusetts State Teacher exam in special education, which I passed on my first try.It is a very useful source of information and contains a ton of facts. It presents special ed topics in a logical fashion and has a nice companion website.I practiced all the online questionssince I had to learn a lot of material in a short period of time. The text is geared towards elementary education. However, I read it, even though my field is secondary SPED, because there are many things in it that relate to special education in general that I need to know about. The discussion of historical special ed legislation is especially complete.I just wish I could get my hands on the companion videos that are (or were) offered by the publisher.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Textbook
I was astonished by both how readable this book is and how much useful information is presented. The book is designed for those entering the field of education and those studying for the Praxis II exam. While the book is targeted to the teaching of exceptional children, regular education teachers, parents and other interested parties would gain a great deal of information from this book. Our assignment was to skim the book - a task I found nearly impossible.I kept getting drawn into the interesting and vivid examples in each chapter.I found the focus questions and review sections to be particularly helpful. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Seems great--on paper
This book is one that may seem to have great and ideas--in theory! In practice?Well, that's another thing. There are a number of things I agree with wholeheartedly: think-pair-share, conferencing in which you meet with the child rather than vice versa, opportunities to immediately apply the concepts and strategies of a lesson, time to "debrief"....BUT, my teaching cannot be via a multitude of mini lessons--the scope of what must be covered in a school year does not allow for this.I also felt that the author's approach was a bit "me, me, me" with the children; she recommends the teacher making the summation in order to control time.In this vein she also mentions the importance of student participation yet she wants to strongly control this. When children share, it is good for the whole group to be included rather than just one partner--yes, this takes some time and it is an art to keep things moving smoothly but many ideas can be shared. This is a great opportunity to have children exposed to thinking outside the box or, perhaps, outside their comfort zone. I agree with the author that young children appreciate a routine but to do the same thing day in and day out can encourage the children to begin to perform like automatons. With today's demands for differentiation, this would create a lot of extra work for teachers.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for teachers launching Reader's Workshop!
This book is excellent for any teacher who is launching reader's workshop in their classroom.I will be teaching first grade this coming school year and have been reading this book to help me prepare. What I really love about the book is that it gives you a scope and sequence for what units of study you could teach throughout the school year, provides examples of mini-lessons you can teach, as well as being very explicit about what a reader's workshop mini-lesson should look like and what reader's workshop should look like in general.Kathy Collins writes in a way that all teacher can relate and includes some funny anecdotes about her own teaching-this is a must have!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book
This was a great and useful book. It helps readers think about how to apply the reading workshop to the clasroom of young children filled with emerging readers. Collins writes in a conversational way with important suggestions and backround. She shares openly and intelligently how to do the work and relays how the plans worked in her classes. Very helpful and readable! ... Read more

I bought this book for my counseling class, and found it mediocre. It was very informative, but gave hardly any examples. Editorial Review

John Wood discovered his passion, his greatest success, and his life's work--not at business school or leading Microsoft's charge into Asia in the 1990s--but on a soul-searching trip to the Himalayas. Wood felt trapped between an all-consuming career and a desire to do something lasting and significant. Stressed from the demands of his job, he took a vacation trekking in Nepal because a friend had told him, "If you get high enough in the mountains, you can't hear Steve Ballmer yelling at you anymore."

5-0 out of 5 stars JohnWood - Hero
Whoever came up with the title of this book deserves an award for most descriptive title.John Wood is a truly remarkable person. The book is about his giving up a lucrative carreer with Microsoft to establish Room to Read, an organization for building and stocking libraries and schools in Asia. If you are drifting into cynicism, spend some time reading this book to recharge your "maybe it all isn't going to Hell "batteries.
5-0 out of 5 stars Just Dive In...Think Big
Anyone who has ever questioned whether individuals can make a difference and change the world of poverty and illiteracy in our poorest nations should read this book--and be prepared to be convinced and inspired! This book describes the journey of John Wood, a Microsoft marketer burned out by the rat race and trekking through Nepal, who rediscovers meaning and purpose in this impoverished nation whose people yearn for education but are hampered by lack of resources, illiteracy rates of 70%, and no books in village schools.Moved by the villagers' passion and commitment for learning, Wood sends a simple email request to friends for used children's books. The response he receives is overwhelming, providing the seeds for Room to Read, a nonprofit organization he founded with his colleagues to develop schools and libraries to educate children in poor countries.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Real Deal
John's pursuit of education for ultimately 10 million children is a noble one.Even more impressive is his drive-for-results management of Room to Read as described in this book. Thoughtful and well-written, this book in the end achieves what so many others fail at . . . making one person believe that they too can change the world.Bravo! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Letter Name Spellers
This is a great resource for first and second grade teachers. Many of the skills addressed are those encountered in your classroom daily.Great companion to Words Their Way, and to offer a hands on opportunity for phonics, spelling and decoding words.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great teacher tool!
I've used Words Their Way for the last year and loved the strategies. This particular book gives lots more sorts for spellers in the letter name/ alphabetic spelling stage. It includes consonant blends and diagraphs as well as more short vowel sorts. These hands on materials have been a great help to me in teaching my mildly disabled elementary students, but all the regular lower grade teachers at my school are raving, and using these great strategies and materials. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best
This text is an awesome summary of 'state of the art' teaching models that improve student achievement. The scenarios provide a glimpse into what each model would look like in the classroom. The authors have also provided an extensive rationale and research base for each model. Joyce is definately an author that informed educators should pay attention to.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have!
This ancient times activity guide is absolutely a must-have to go along with the ancient times book!It is just full of SO MUCH MORE than you can imagine!Maps, hands-on activities, book suggestions...it will truly bring to life the history from the reader!I cannot imagine using one without the other...I can see where the ancient times books might not feel so "full" without the activity guide! It is well-worth the price and you will be thrilled at how easy it is to use, how much your children will enjoy it and how much you will all learn as a family!

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful activities
The activities in this book are very helpful for teaching ancient history. I would not limit yourself to these activities but use them as a springboard to try other things as well. When you don't have the time or inclination to do anything else then no worries you are set with this book. The activities can stand-alone and provide a superb hands on history experience.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great resource
As someone who sometimes find it is a bit intimidating to teach history in an exciting, interesting way and as someone who is concerned that my young children 'won't get it'; this is a great resource.

3-0 out of 5 stars No Silver Bullet, but . . .
If you want to read a book that combines brief overviews of the work of many well-regarded leaders in the field of education, this book is a good beginning. Those who work in public education and understand the need for re-structuring and re-culturing our schools will appreciate the authors' laser-like focus on student learning through the development of professional learning communities.
3-0 out of 5 stars Mixed Message
Rarely do I find a collection of essays by multiple authors to be a great book.Too often the prose is uneven and the authors, despite the assertions of the editors, come off as talking at cross purposes. This book is no exception.
4-0 out of 5 stars On Common Ground
As the processes of school improvement shifts from regulatory compliance to authentic work in schools, it is essential to build a broad understanding of decades of thinking on school reform. This book offers a strong summary of the concepts most likely to bring real change in the only place that matters, the classroom. We have spent decades talking about change and the learning community concept has the potential to be the catalyst of change.

4-0 out of 5 stars Different Brains, Different Learners
A great book for teachers as well as parents. It helps to understand what is or may be happening in the brain.I like the recommendations given on ways we can help alleviate stressful events under given conditions.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lacking
This book lacks the depth it seems to promise. Some of the illustrations are lacking. There is not enough meat to help anyone with special needs learners. I would suggest you look elsewhere. I was greatly disappointed since the majority of work by Jensen is wonderful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for all teachers

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceeded my expectations
This book changed the way I design my college level courses in a very effective and enjoyable way. It will give you a lot of insight on the design of courses that will encourage students to continue learning.I also enjoyed all the reference on the results of scientific work that deals with innovative teaching methods. You will love this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Detailed ideas applied 2 work equals a new answer.
This book is worth it. I graduated from a graduate program (in education) and this information has increased/expanded my knowledge as to how things must be done in the classroom (when teaching, when testing, and when lecturing). For example, each square of information must be related to the other square of information in order to reach ones point with ones students. Education is about detail. Let this information from this book change the way you see and teach the information you have obtained a degree in. Let it take you to new spheres, or portals of information that were always present in the work that you do, but that you never saw because one lacked the tools in order to open up those worlds. Create beauty in the work that you create (in the quizzes, in the lesson plans, in the rubrics chart, in the surveys, etc.) What you lecture must be from the book, and what you assign for reading must mirror the lecture, and that equals learning.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written with practical solutions
My son was recently diagnosed with Aspergers so I purchased many books on the subject to better help him. This book by far offers the most practical solutions to everyday school issues.Reading about theories and studies is helpful up to a point but as a parent I needed hands on solutions to common problems and this book provided many options that have worked for my son.

5-0 out of 5 stars Maybe I'm Singing to the Choir!
I haven't found anyone who hasn't found this book incredibly valuable. I have bought at least four of them because my friends keep "borrowing" them and somehow don't manage to get them back to me. It is such a helpful book that lays out point by point how our kids experience elementary school, their various challenges and how to deal with them. Any parent who is actively involved with their child who has Autism Spectrum Disorder or Asperger Syndrome should have this book as a reference. And every elementary school teacher working with our AS kids should read it too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Every AS parent should have one of these
Since my son's diagnosis at the end of first grade, I've been purchasing book after book, trying to educate myself. The realities of being a parent of an AS child means that you have to educate, not only yourself, but your child's teachers. This book is a great way to go about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for teachers new to this technology!
Will's book is a great resource for teachers who are interested in introducing blogs etc. into the classroom but who may be intimidated by the technology. His book is easy to read and understand for those of us who are not as technologically advanced as of yet. I believe Will's book will be one of the greatest resources in my classroom in September. I would recommend this book to any teacher who does not want to be left behind by his/her students as technology advances.

5-0 out of 5 stars Step by Step Book for Beginners
Will Richardson displays great pedagogical style in walking the reader through the steps of seemingly complicated technological tasks. He makes learning about great tech tools for the classroom like blogs, wikis, and rss easy and exciting. He not only tells how to set them up but various ways to use them in the classroom.I had been searching for such a text and now that I've found it, I plan to use it as the main text for my grad student course about educational uses of the Internet.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you can only buy one MBA admissions book, make it this one...
If you could only buy one book on MBA admissions, make it this book. How to Get Into the Top MBA Programs is the most thorough and comprehensive guide to MBA admissions; Montauk answers nearly every possible question an MBA hopeful could have. The caveat is that because this book is slightly outdated, it is best paired with a more updated book like,"Your MBA Game Plan," by Omari Bouknight and Scott Shrum.Although Montauk has this new edition (I am referencing the 2nd edition, so be sure to get whatever the most recent edition is), I think Your MBA Game Plan puts forth some important, more up-to-date advice that is slightly different, because it comes from the perspective of recent admits to a top b-school.However, it is not nearly as comprehensive as Montauk's book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have - Read as early as possible in the process!
A friend recommended this book to me while I was preparing to apply to business school and I found it invaluable. As a strategy consultant at a "Big Five" from an Ivy undergraduate with the standard GMAT of 700 or above, I could have easily blended in with everyone else with my qualifications. This book helped me to figure out what would help me to stand out at each individual business school. Moreover, it helped me to identify my weaknesses in time to address some of them. For example, because I read this book two years before applying, I had time to become a leader in several community service organizations (instead of just participating) and to take some classes in areas I'd neglected in undergrad. Finally, I was able to choose consulting projects that created a more compelling application. Thanks in large part to this book, I now have an MBA from a top five school. More importantly, the school was the right fit for me and I loved the experience. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A Two For Effort
This book is written from the viewpoint of a flaming socialist with the attitude that anything white or European or is overly valued in American history textbooks.Loewen does have many valid points about what history textbooks omit, but the degree to which he is clearly slanted to the left is ludicrous."Lies My Teacher Told Me" could have been an amazing book, but all it did was aggrivate me and motivate me to write a 23 page paper debunking half of what the author wrote, much to the dismay of my idiotic Sociology professor. The only reason I didn't give the book 1 star is because the overall intent and effort put forth were good, but the book as a whole is just far too biased.

5-0 out of 5 stars an important book
Interesting, informative, and should be required reading for high school and college students.

3-0 out of 5 stars A mixed review
I have mixed feelings about this book.
