5-0 out of 5 stars Greate Read and Interesting New Perspective on How things work in this Jungle
I got registered onto a few networking sites like Linkedin, Orkut and Hi5 in March and suddenly started thinking about term Network in social context. Being a computer engineer by profession and having worked on communication networks for last 5 years it was quite obvious to find parallels. And then I stuck upon this book. I must say i wasn't disapponted. Each Ideas has been built with convincing examples and is well supported by results from ongoing research being done by author. I would wait for him to write something on dissemination of information through social networks and network dynamics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended for the Technical Practitioner
In an informal survey held in a recent webinar, over 50% of the (several hundred) participants ranked "Word-of-Mouth" as the most typical source for leads that convert to paying customers. Interesting...!
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent -Applicable to SOA Networks
I have been involved in telecommunications networking for years, and recently started up a "community of interest" web site around SOA Networks.

3-0 out of 5 stars ok
the book came in a reasonable amount of time but was not the same quality as was initially stated. It said the book was brand new but it had bent corners.

3-0 out of 5 stars Book NOT in Good condition.
Company was prompt and service was great. However, the book was listed in 'good' condition and it is not. I can ignore the writing and hilighting but it had a defect in which it was missing about 50 of it's pages. To me missing pages does not qualify as 'good' condition. These people obviously do not check the quality of thier books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Textbook I've Ever Read
I would like to find Neil Carlson and shake his hand. This is is without a doubt one of the best textbooks I've had the pleasure of using.

2-0 out of 5 stars Obviously not everyone is going to like your book
It's rare you see such gushing praise for an essay collection, more impressive is the average length of these Amazon reviews. It seems the reviewers like to look at their own words as much as this author does.
5-0 out of 5 stars A merited dystopian view of our declining culture
Theodore Dalrymple (Anthony Daniels in real life) has been viewing the bottom of British culture for many years as a psychiatrist and social commentator. As a psychiatrist, Dalrymple practiced in a prison and at a hospital in Birmingham, England. Nearly all his patients are from what can be fairly considered the "lower class" in the late 20th and early 21st Centuries.
5-0 out of 5 stars An important cultural critique
Theodore Dalrymple is a top-notch English commentator and a gifted essayist. The articles featured here represent some of his best and most recent writings. The volume is divided into two major sections: arts and letters, and society and politics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Personality Plus
I read this book quite a few years ago but I really enjoyed the updated version. She has so much wisdom about this topic.I teach school and I have my students take this test. It really helps me to understand them and plan accordingly. It has also helped me to understand my kids and husband.I highly recommend it to parents and educators. Very enlightening!

5-0 out of 5 stars Elementary foundation usually serves us best
Reviewer Pascal Schoneburg complains, "If you're totally new to personality theories and or psychology as a whole, this book may be for you - if you have aquired a knowledge foundation in psychology this book feels almost like an insult." Well, Pascal, I have a master's degree in clinical psychology and I find Littauer's simple, foundational explanations the easiest to explain, illustrate, and understand one's essential personality. Go ahead and work with other systems that give you a possible fit in 16 categories, or 9, or whatever--and see how easily you remember what you've been taught.
2-0 out of 5 stars Level 1Reading
I have used their personality test sheet which I really liked so I bought the book to deepen my understanding. This book speaks to the reader at an elementary level, like talking to a child. I found it a bit upsetting and discontinued the book after chapter 1. If you're totally new to personality theories and or psychology as a whole, this book may be for you - if you have aquired a knowledge foundation in psychology this book feels almost like an insult. It made me feel like the authors think that the readers are like little dumb children that need stupid 'real life' examples after every single point... This book should in fact be in the children section or maybe young adults. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty darn good for a promotional book
This book is currently being used for the Lt's promotional exam in Houston, Texas. As promotional books, it is pretty useful. The text covers all of the topics that a supervisor/ manager should know (Management Styles/Leadership Theory/Communications, etc..)without going into too much depth as some texts do.There is enough material to make it challenging, but what is important to me is that after the test is over, there still is worth to this book. They list resources, ideas, and plans that can be converted to your departments use.If your studying, good luck.If you just want to pick up some ideas on the latest in police management theory, this is still a good book to study!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Textbook on Human Communication
I am a huge fan of Daniel Goleman. He's the bestselling author who coined the term "Emotional Intelligence" with his 1995 book of the same name. Now he's got a new book, "Social Intelligence: The New Science of Human Relationships."Social intelligence is the ability to read other people's cues and then act on them.Life is all about relationships, and there is a science to how we relate to each other. It's fascinating to see how Goleman breaks down each aspect of communication. We can learn how to more effectively express ourselves so that we feel understood. And we can learn how to better "read" other people so that we can better understand. This helps to improve our interactions and ultimately strengthen our relationships. He talks about "synchrony" or interacting smoothly at the nonverbal level, which is an important, yet often overlooked, part of relating.Goleman also scientifically explains "the capacity for joy" and how that affects our social intelligence. He shows how our resilience plays an important role in our happiness, which comes into play as we express ourselves to others.

5-0 out of 5 stars From Training the Mind to Training the Heart
Simply put Social Intelligence is the recognition of one's own ignorance and faithful dedication to one's principles. Every day and specilally during our Meirc Training programs in dubai I meet professionals with very high IQ and very low social IQ. Social Intelligence shows why it's important to have both. It's filled with wonderful examples that show what social intelligence is and how to develop it. This book is recommended reading for any leader and any coach and will be my recommended reading for all trainees in particular the intelligent people attending NLP training.

5-0 out of 5 stars A FRESH LOOK AT OUR WORLD THRU AN EMERGING NEW SCIENCE!
Five AMAZING Stars!! Welcome to the brave new world of "Social Neuroscience"! This book may change the way you see life, relationships, and how you approach both! In "Social Intelligence", the companion volume to the highly successful and informative "Emotional Intelligence", award-winning author Dr. Daniel Goleman examines the emerging science of Social Neuroscience and reveals it's most basic concept: "we are wired to connect" with each other. Our brains are "sociable" and interact, from the basic one-to-one relationship to those relationships much more complex and layered. He then tells us specifically how this happens in our everyday lives. From the bedroom to the boardroom to recreational activities and beyond, it's always there affecting us. Even more importantly, the book shows how the direct one-on-one neural bridge between two people emotionally affects the brain of the other person. That emphasis is how this book differs from "Emotional Intelligence" which dealt with what happens within the individual. Each individual social interaction becomes a mental thermostat, affecting both specific parts of the brain and individual emotional functions with each changing situation. Each new situation will "reset key aspects of our brain function as they orchestrate our emotions" each time. While each discussion gets technical, Dr. Goleman gives specific simple examples of everyday occurrences that we all can recognize and which reinforces his points.

5-0 out of 5 stars A way to understand howspreading words works
As social science proffesional involved in the marketing field, I am continually dared -if not demanded- to explore entrepeneurial iniciatives to get on the edge of the competition and reach smarter and demanding customers to seed an idea and make it roll over the world, it is sure that task is not easy, and many of times even good ideas not suceed, why?
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent source of knowledge for innovation management
I have been using this book for years in research and teaching at the university level. There are other fine books that concern innovation diffusion and adoption but Roger's book is THE reference. Many of my students in information systems struggling to find a theory to study information systems have "adopted" parts of this book, especially the five factors that determine adoption, e.g., relative advantage, complexity and compatibility. A more tricky area is to categorise potential and actual adopters,e.g., who wants to be a laggard? I also like the discussion on "pro-innovation bias",i.e., that innovation is sometimes seen as a law-like process wich is not always the case. Some big companies' alleged "innovations" are not really needed by the users. This book should be valuable to all that are interested in change processes in social systems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
This is a trully magnificent and wonderfully-written book. It offers a thorough introduction to diffusion research and it is packed with a ton of illustrative applications that make the content seem relevant and not abstract to the reader. A must for anyone interested in diffusion of innovations (either technological or of political nature). Cant praise it enough. ... Read more

This book is absolutely great! I find it amusing and sometimes quite moving. I work for the fire dept and I find myself almost unable to put it down when we get calls! Haha. It's such a creative idea. I can't wait to order the second one.
5-0 out of 5 stars A suprise gem!
I bought this book without knowing anything about it, and fell in love with it. I loved the little glimpses into other people's lives, and some of the finds were so touching they were difficult to read. A great book to have on hand to pick up and spend a few minutes with (if you can resist the temptation to read it cover to cover like I did!)

1-0 out of 5 stars Laura can have an opinion - Entertainers can't!
Ingraham is an elite herself. Her opinion is valid, why?Because she is not a entertainer?Does she mention that the 'great' Ronald Reagan was an entertainer? So you can be an entertainer with a legitimate view, but you should have the same view as Laura!Subverting America?Doesn't every American have the right to speak, the duty to speak, their mind?I'd tell Laura to shut up and write, but that wouldn't be polite now would it?Of course being polite/charitable isn't a concern of the right wing.

3-0 out of 5 stars Solid Republican conservatism
Ingraham rails against elitism in six separate areas: politics, media, arts andentertainment, ivory tower (academia), business, and international organizations. For the most part, she makes her points with solid references, especially to the liberal Hollywood actors and actresses who seem to think that because we pay to watch them play dress-up, they are entitled to tell us who to vote for. It's a relevant and eye-opening book about the state of America today and why changes need to be made.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid conservative writing
Shut Up and Sing by Laura Ingraham is an insightful look into not only the liberal elite but how conservatives view them.Ingraham's book is similar to Ann Coulter's Slander and Women Who Make the World Worse by Kate O'Beirne, but better in that she explains things with so much more detail. It does seem that the same stories about unhinged liberals seem to circulate from book to book.I've read the same crazy stories in all three of these books, plus a few that were in Michael Savage's The Enemy Within.I would have to place this book near the top of the heap of this kind of writing.Ingraham doesn't engage in name-calling and backs up her writing with lots of source material. Her voice in writing is straight-forward without the histrionics that make up so much conservative writing. My one complaint is that she seems to see Communism everywhere.Maybe I'm naive, but I thought that The Red Scare was over. Not according to Ingraham, and she doesn't come off as a quack, she's got the sources to back herself up.Scary reading. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Inaccurate and vapid
If you've ever had any actual experience in public health, you will probably recognize this book for the sham it really is. Public health systems in the real world just don't behave in the idealized way that Turnock describes. Moreover, Turnock is far too uncritical of HMOs, which consitently fail to provide actual assitance (not just theoretical assistance) to patients who need it. There is also no understanding at all here about the ways in which class differences affect dstribution of health care coverage, or any discussion of what we might be able to do about it. 5-0 out of 5 stars Wow...
Boy, I'm surprised at the reaction the book is getting! I have this book, and it's really quite good - I'm an MS-Epidemiology candidate, and it's really helped me with the fundamentals of the field. Incidentally, in response to the implication that Dr. Turnock is less than qualified to put forth an effort such as this, you might want to investigate that, you can find his impressive accompishments at the school's website. Board certified in Preventive Medicine and Public Health, and former director of the IDPH, to name a few? Sounds qualified to me. I'd recommend this book to any PH student or someone looking to learn the basics...I don't hesitate to rank this right up there with Gordis. Cheers!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good guide to understanding Public Health
This book really tells us what the Public Health is and how it works, as the title suggests. Even though data or statistics cited are somewhat outdated, you can understand the fundamental meaning of PH. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars pre-req: mid-level stats experience
I had taken a class in HLM before, and I bought this book to refresh myself on the details. It takes a good deal of attention to detail and concentration to really get the full measure from this book, although it's all in there.Despite the authors' best efforts, there is a good bit of stats jargon in the book, so a reader who is not familiar might have some difficulty. If you're at a point where learning HLM is a logical next step, you'll be fine and I recommend this book. However, if your over-eager faculty advisor told you to learn HLM, despite your minimal experience in stats, you're better off enrolling in a class or workshop.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but sometimes skipping ahead too fast
This book gives a detailed description of the use of an advanced method to deal with nested data sets.
4-0 out of 5 stars Useful, but need solid background in stats
This book describes important advances in statistical analysis of social science data, circa 1992. Much of this data has a natural hierarchical grouping. But traditional statistical methods proved inadequate at coping. The biggest drawback was the failure of the assumption of independence. If at the lowest level, Items I1,...,In are grouped into sets J1,...,Jm, where mRead more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply a classic
This text is a great purchase for any student who will be designing and performing experiments as part of his or her own research. For example, a Ph.D. student in marketing who is studying consumer behavior should read this book.As a matter of fact, it would be a great "prep" book to read before showing up to a Ph.D. program (again, only if the research program will involve performing experiments).

5-0 out of 5 stars It's expensive, it must be good, right?
I have used this book as a graduate student doing social science research. The editorial reviewers got it right; Kirk emphasizes logical explanation, although computational equations are presented in tandem. The book is so expensive because it's so thick and thorough.Everything's here.Youwon't have to buy a bunch of other books.Just about everything to do withANOVA and modeling is in here.A good resource. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This book is close to be perfect. Respect!
Bollen's book about structural equations is exceptionally good. Bollen does not only write and explain very well and thorough but he also is able to communicate a difficult subject. I would guess that even people form rather non-mathematical fields will find this book great because he really tries to explain even small technical details frequently neglected.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bollen excels at a very difficult task
This book sticks out like a beautiful flower in a bed of weeds.
5-0 out of 5 stars a must in SEM
I've taken a class in Structural Equations Modelling from Ken Bollen at UNC Chapel Hill. Naturally the book was the main reference for the course, so I went over most of it during the semester. The coverage in classes differed from the book material due to the recent developments, and my impression was that Prof. Bollen planned on writing a second edition of the book (although he is not quite happy about the pricing strategy of Wiley). For many things marked as "currently open problem" in the book, the solution, at least a partial one, have been found in the last 15 years of research in this dynamically developing area. The book is still a compendium of important basic results, and will be one for at least another 5 to 10 years, until another modern and rigorous treatment appears in press; so far this is the best reference I've seen. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Smart instructions for curing social blunders
Through illustrative stories and lots of useful acronyms, author Karl Albrecht offers essential skill-building techniques to enhance your "social intelligence." Improve your strategic insight into patterns of social interaction, political acumen and connections with others by developing your people skills. We highly recommend this book to leaders who want to learn how to build a climate of cooperation rather than of conflict.

5-0 out of 5 stars A workable approach for improvingsocial competence
This book offers a fresh, workable, approach to improving social competence.I liked the way the topics were organized so they were easy to understand and how the author illustrated his points with real-life examples.Even though I am somewhat familiar with some of the topics and examples in the book, my view of them is different now looking at it through a social intelligence perspective.
5-0 out of 5 stars A review from a book critic for the rest of us, who was as skeptical as you may be now...
As a book critic for the rest of us, I'd like to offer my two cents, after reading Dr. Albrecht's book and thoroughly enjoying the experience of reading it, and the insight it offers.
