4-0 out of 5 stars A great primer on business and ethics...
Ethics is one of the topics that can be very stimulating or very dry.Fortunately, John R. Boatright is able to present a very engaging discussion filled with critical thinking, and practical examples. The examples mentioned are relevant and timely to any contemporary discussion of ethical issues in business. As a student of business, I commend any person interested in the topic to delve inside this great piece.

This book features 366 essays penned from a woman's perspective. Sample topics include gratitude, harmony, self-nurturing, positive body image, the importance of scented linen closets, and many others. Each essay sports a pithy quote from (surprise!) the likes of Kahlil Gibran. Viewed uncritically, it's hard to argue with Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars FInding One Self and Fulfilling a Dream
After being in an abusive relationship for ten years, I had feelings of hopelessness. I had no positive outlook about anything and the thought of a 'future' was slim to none in my eyes. I have always wanted to be a writer, but the misery that I was living in kept me from having a clear mind and my thoughts were jumbled and disoriented. In 1997, my parents bought me Simple Abundance. I read it, reread it, and read it again. I followed Sarah's suggestions and participated in all that she suggested with the wonderful inspiring activites she offered in the book. My book was published in May 2003! I have a wonderful marriage with my 'new' husband and am living my life as it is suppose to be. I am living the life God intended me to live. Thanks to Sarah Banbreathnach for sharing her insights and taking the time to write such a wonderful book that has changed a lot of lives for the better.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bookaholic
Sarah Breathnach writes about the simple pleasures in life in such a way that it makes you want to try all the wonderful small joys she speaks about in the book. Even my husband picks it up and reads the daily messages. He comes out with a smile on his face with some kind of comment on the subject matter each day!

5-0 out of 5 stars more refreshing thoughts for a thirsty life
This book continually gives me encouragement and motivation. It helps to point out all the good things in life without having to go shopping or changing anything in my life but the way I see things.I enjoy this book very much and recommend it to anyone looking for inspiration and validation. The author highlights all the wonderful things in a woman's life, and literally celebrates the fact that we merely exist. She helps with her terrific sense of humor, and her ability to admit her faults that are not unlike our own.She reminds us of positive things we have that we may miss in the day-to-dayness of our lives. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Better than I expected
This was among the 7 pieces of source material on my most recent exam.It was better than I expected.I looked at it from the perspective that I should use a person's culture to my advantage. With a familiarity of culture specific issues, I can make myself a more effective police officer.I found the author's writing to be of high quality, but book did not make me more culturally diverse. If you are looking for a book that teaches you how to be a police officer, this is not it.If you are looking for a book that might explain why the Iranian guy got mad at you last week, this is the right one.

1-0 out of 5 stars Multicultural Law Enforcement
The worse book I have ever read. This book is filled with Liberal jibberish and worthless information that the authors try to pass off as fact. This 500+ page masterpiece is loaded with unfactual opinions from people who know absolutely nothing about Police work. It could have been explained in 50 or less pages.Don't waist your money!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Balanced and Necessary
This book is an important contribution to policing at multiple levels. It discusses ethnic and minority groups in a respectful manner, attempting to avoid stereotypes. It provides the police officer with insight into and strategies for policing a multicultural society. At no point does it even slightly suggest that law enforcement should use culture or race as an excuse to not enforce the law.The introductory chapter provides a framework for understanding the phenomenon of immigration in the U.S., and connects 21st century demographics to the need for the book itself. The authors provide useful information on topics such as community policing, racial profiling, and hate crimes. It is absolutely ridiculous to refer to this book as apologetic or soft on crime. If police officers are not ready for this book, then they should get out of policing. This book is one of the best that I have seen for law enforcement professionals related to the multicultural society. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Stupid Party
This book has been a major inspiration to me and my way of thinking. It is not very difficult to go online and read any number of Conservatives talking about all of the issues of the day. But, this book stands alone in following and celebrating the history of Conservative intellectuals. Often times it is portrayed (not without some merit) that Conservatives are anti-intellectual. I have frequently heard that Liberals are just naturally smarter or more inclined to be an intellectual. But, The Conservative Mind blows a hole through all of that. Kirk examines major Conservative thinkers like: Edmund Burke, John Adams, George Canning, Benjamin Disraeli, John Randolph of Roanoke, Orestes Brownson, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, John C. Calhoun, and T. S Eliot (amung many many others).
2-0 out of 5 stars Repellent Sale of Conservativism
The fatalistic view of Conservativism is expressed by Kirk even before the first chapter concludes as he states, "[Edmund] Burke, could he see our century, never would concede that a consumption-society, so near suicide, is the end for which Providence has prepared man".But wait. The Conservative Mind was first published in 1953, the mythical golden age of America with Ward and June Cleaver and Normal Rockwell. Meanwhile, Burke, a contemporary of the 18th century is pining for the 14th century. What a depressing ideology to think that we always live in the worst of times.
5-0 out of 5 stars Please don't review it if you don't understand it.
Probably most people reading this already know of this book's reputation and influence, so I'll skip over both the chapter-by-chapter analysis and the praise (I'd end up in what Kirk would call "overweening" praise, anyway). But I do want to respond to a typical liberal caricature offered by a previous reviewer. The caricature to which I refer is the idea that a conservative is anyone opposed to change. In fact, the reviewer even argued that the Soviet Union could have been seen as a "conservative" system (an argument endlessly repeated in contemporary media).

5-0 out of 5 stars Seminal Work By Classic Social Theorist Max Weber
What is most curious about the home page for this classic academic work is that Amazon does not explain that this text is the fruit of one the most singularly important academic translations in the 20th century, accomplished by the team of sociologists Hans Gerth and C. Wright Mills (who later became an immensely influential classic sociologist himself). First published after the Second World War, the text provided access at long last to a treasure trove of previously untranslated works by Weber for the American academic community, and thus transformed the nature of the way American social scientists understood modern social theory.
5-0 out of 5 stars excellent introduction to Weber's work
Gerth and Mills' reader provides an excellent introduction to Weber's life and thought. This edition includes excerpts from _Economy and Society_, the brilliant essays ``Politics as a Vocation'' and ``Science as aVocation,'' plus a brief critical biography and material from othersources.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Foundational book for conflict resolution
Easy reading, with good examples of the various types and styles of conflict management, metaphors and escalation.Upon hearing the fate of Phil Hartman, I immediately thought of this book, and how its examples may have definately helped, as it has helped me to clarify issues in my marriage. However, the book failed to incorporate enough visual demonstrations of its "hands-on" ideas such as flowcharts or other types of process charts, thus probably causing the "visual-learner" type of audience to not be able to keep track of the "how-to" process. The book was used for a Public Conflict Resolution Ph.D course, however I would recommend it for any type of college course relating to conflict management. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars I hated it
My department changed the reading material for a promotional exam from Callibre Press to this junk.I was forced to read and internalize it;I hated it.This book is intollerable from the front cover. Take a look at the guy in the graphic. He is holding a flashlight in his gun hand; nuf said?

4-0 out of 5 stars Very basic, good book
I had to read this book for apromotional examination and found it to be a good refresher of the very basic points that we all learned at the beginning of our police careers. When I am approached by someone who is not yet in police work and wants to read a good, simply written and understandable book on law enforcement, I always recommend this one.It may seem to be too basic for those of us in this field for the years I have served, but many areas are still very relevant.

3-0 out of 5 stars Police Field Operations
Too vague and general for someone using the book to use as a reference. Does not go into a lot of key points you actually use on patrol. Also, tends to make remarks that do not reflect the reality of todays policework. The author seems out of touch with policing today. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Equality of outcome, not uniformity of treatment
It isn't necessary to agree with everything in this witty book to realize that its subject - male bias - is crucial to our understanding of ourselves as humans. It is such an obvious, if overlooked, fact that using the male as the standard of normalcy for humans is illogical.
5-0 out of 5 stars Man Is the Measure of All Things
... is the double-entendre premise of this book and it is very well articulated. Ms. Tavris points out a tendancy to see men as the norm and women as the deviant and therefore something to be corrected and studied. She demonstrates as much with, for example, the following-
5-0 out of 5 stars Even handed and inspiring
This book really lifted my spirits in its even-handed treatment of the 'language' of the genders. It explored the cultural expectations---and decpetions----about the genders, and gave each credit and offered an uplifting, intelligent, hopeful conclusion.I especially liked the fact that she gave men their due for their often-misunderstood gestures of affection and care----the clumsy and non glamorous gifts that form the backbone for so many sitcom jokes.Tavris is a sympathetic and vivid writer with wonderful logical and analytical abilities. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Work onReal World Issues
This book consists of 15 chapters and Shelling intends to make use of his line of economic reasoning to throw light on a considerable variety of intriguing real world issues such as organised crime, circumstances of dying, policy ethics, vicarious problem-solving, self-command, and mind consumption.
4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and easy read
Quite fun book, collection of essays on all kinds of topics. Some repetition occurs, it's not written as one volume, but it's fine, and it's usually pretty limited.
5-0 out of 5 stars The rigorous brain of a Nobel Prize winning economist
Thomas Schelling was awarded the 2005 Nobel prize for economics, and readers of this book will be able to tell you why. Choice and Consequence represents a collection of 15 essays written by Schelling between the late 60s and early 80s, covering a broad range of subjects such as governments' social policies, how to deal with death, how game theory applies to weapons treaties, and organized crime.

3-0 out of 5 stars A useful starting point, but not a conclusion
One measure of success for a book such as this is how effectively it stimulates discussion.Unfortunately, opinion seems to have polarised around those who think every statement in this book is correct, and those who do not.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Read Unless You Have To!
Why the NJ DOP picked this book for testable material is beyond me? After was all said and done, 3 months worth of reading of this boring, choppy, unrealistic supervision theory book the DOP only asked 12 questions from it.Author lives in Fantasy Land when it comes to police work, especially in NJ.Come up with a few distinct "buzz words" and a littney of lists on police tactics, and you to can write a boring book like this one.

1-0 out of 5 stars Boring
Why the Department of Personnel would have anyone read this for promotional testing is beyond me. Put together a few five dollar words and fragmented thoughts and you're an expert on supervision. This book was as interesting as watching paint dry. It should come with a noose so you could hang yourself after reading it!

1-0 out of 5 stars Long winded.
The only reason anyone would read this book is because it was listed as required reading for a promotional exam. Mr Whisenand is out of his mind and should limit his writing to something he has firsthand experience in. Read this book only if you are having insomnia. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Many of us pursue fitness because we want to remain attractive to partners and potential partners, and we stay healthy so we can continue to have sex with those partners. But why do people care so much about sex? This book, written by an evolutionary biologist, explains how all the weird quirks of human sexuality came to be: sex with no intention of procreation, invisible fertility, sex acts pursued in private--all common to us, but very different from most other species. 1-0 out of 5 stars Laughable and Questionable
Diamond spends twenty one laughable pages on male lactation. What's next? How about implanting a uterus? After all, men are stronger and could probably carry babies better.
2-0 out of 5 stars Pretentious and lacking
I sincerely expected much more from the author of "Guns, Germs and Steel" than this booklet that thrives on the trivia of evolutonary psychology. It'sobious why is sex fun- to encourage reproduction - and I expected the author went beyond this self-evident fact. Bit it didn't. And, excuse me, Dr. Diamond, how you account for gay sex in your reasoning? Homosexuality is totallyoverlooked, yet it's one of the mayor puzzles ofhuman sexuality- and of sexuality in general.
4-0 out of 5 stars I know why! Do you?
Okay, for the most part this question is obvious. The answer is because if feels so gooooooood. The real question is why does it feel so good. How did we evolve to enjoy sex when to some extent the rest of the animal kingdom does it solely to get their genes into the next generation?

3-0 out of 5 stars great idea, little proof
As part of my enquiry into the forces that the Reformation unleased, I decided to at last read this classic.
5-0 out of 5 stars ". . . a more impassable and in its invisibility more terrifying gulf. . ."
Here is an argument which merits a particular accolade: it is one of the few modern academic theories whose acceptance has withstood the test of time.Max Weber's claim, that the Protestant ethic provided the psychological/sociological framework for the emergence of Capitalism in the formative 16th and 17th centuries has surprisingly outlived, in its original whole, such momentous theses as Einsteinian relativity, to the extent that it remains so far unscathed by the inevitable skeptical critique, in tact in its primary tenets.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Sociology Classic
Modern readers may find the dry style this book is written in a bit boring, but the subject matter makes up for it. Weber looks at 4 branches of Protestantism (Calvinism, Pietism, Methodists, Baptists) and how they each affected the development of modern capitalism. It also sheds light on some of the origins of modern Western beliefs. ... Read more
