I'd prefer a 3 1/2 for this book
As a graduate student in Library and Information Studies, I was assigned this book in one of my courses.As textbooks in this field go, Case's book is more readable than most.As mentioned by an earlier reviewer, it is an in-depth literature review, and since it is for one of the required courses which had to be taken early on, it will be a useful reference in future classes.In fact, it is a book that I will retain simply as a source of information on possible research material.
I have to disagree with a Reader from England...
I'm currently enrolled in a doctoral program in Information Science and, while this book isn't the sum total of all LIS knowledge, I've found it invaluable as a reference on Information Seeking.Few other places will you find this level of literature review laid out in such a compact way.I use it nearly every day in my studies and I'm grateful that Don Case wrote it.It's a roadmap and guidebook for my studies. The case of a failed survey mission....
I was excited by the possibility of a suitable overview of information seeking, I obtained the book a.s.a.p.I was willing to forgive the high price in favour of a good text.Read more

There has to be something better then this book
I had to buy this book and use it for a class.I find the book to be filled with a wide range of simple common sense theories. It is not a book I would recommend to anyone if they are looking for clear and valuable techniques to utilize there has to be something better then this.

comprehensive text on change
So much of the literature on change is often a simplistic cookbook claiming change can be executed in 7 easy steps. Burke provides the reader with the theoretical background and takes one through the multiple considerations when executing organizational change. I applaud Dr Burke for revealing the complexity of change and providing insights into the practice of change management.This is a primer for all who are engaged especially in large scale transformational change as it clearly provides one the background to help one educate others on why the change agent does what she does. ... Last night in his State of the Union speech, G. W. Bush pointed out the obvious fact that America depends far too heavily on oil to support its lifestyle.Whoever programmed him to say that must have been reacting to the mounting unrest over the crises associated with big oil:war, pollution, corruption, and extreme flabbiness.

Uncommon readings addressing the Civic Community
I purchased this book after reading Kunstler's most recent book, The Long Emergency. I found the author had much to say though at times his stridency and passion may have clouded his message somewhat. But hey, if we are talking about the end of society as we have known it for the last one hundred years perhaps a little passion can't hurt. I was moved enough however, to purchase his earlier book (1994), The Geography of Nowhere.

Well worth reading
The author of the bestseller Reviving Ophelia this times takes us on a journey through the lives of our elders. Following the lead of Bernice Neugarten at the University of Chicago, she distinguishes between the "young-old" and the "old-old". This book focuses mainly on the later, telling the stories of people who are coping with loss and illness.
Another Country:Navigating the Emotional Terrain of Our Elders
This book is written in a readable style that holds your interest.I bought it to help understand my elderly father who is suffering from dementia, but I found it told me a lot about myself and what I will want and need in the next 20 years.Mary Pipher's insightful and easy to understand.

Another country: the tourist perspective
Not being "old-old" myself, with both parents dead, I picked up this book out of curiosity.Piper does not mince words. She says at the outset, "Old age is not for sissies," and she goes on to describe life as an old person in a country designed for the young.It's an apt metaphor: the old learn a new language and a new terrain.Read more

Funny and True.
A useful tool for determining your place in life. Learn how to differentiate and identify the 3 major and 9 sub classes of people in the U.S. Learn the tell tail signs people exhibit that signifies there social class. A very funny read.

Funniest book I ever read
I read hundreds of books, mostly nonfiction, and this is by far the most hilarious. Even through several readings over the last fifteen years, I laugh so hard that the tears flow.Fussell's accurate, minute descriptions of people from every socioeconomic class and their possessions, pretensions and weaknesses are finely observed and incredibly detailed. I have my children read it for their home education in high school, as a guide through the United States class system.

Not for the elegant, or those who'd like to be.
I love Lucky magazine, and shows like What Not To Wear, so I was very excited about this book.It has some good information about fit, body type, and how many of certain items (such as T-shirts) a girl really needs.I also liked the inserts about various designers and their personal styles.But when it comes to breaking down a wardrobe, the actual clothes pictured are so trendy that they were "over" by the time of publication, and I worry that the more literal-minded among us may use them as some sort of standard.These are not classic items that everyone needs and can (or should) wear.The best way to use this book is abstractly...and even then, it's just not the best manual of its type.Many of the suggested outfits were inappropriate for any sort of event, and others were just silly.I was disappointed.

The Lucky Shopping Manual
This book is really written for the under 30 year old woman.It is very detailed and thoughtful but I really couldn't say that I picked up any good fashion ideas for my age group (50+ years).I have bought The Pocket Stylist by Kendall Farr and some of the "What not to wear" series and have found them fantastic and appropriate.
PERFECT for Spring Closet Cleaning!
I bought this book on a whim, thinking that what with being a teacher, a receptionist, and an actress, having a book full of outfits is just what I need to get dressed in the morning.

things my mother never told me

Verbal Abuse--Survivors Speak Out
I read this author's first "Verbal Abuse" book last year.It was the best I found on the subject.I just read her 2nd book "Survivors Speak Out."I can't say enough about how it gave me the strength I needed to begin recovering from verbal abuse. I'm a independent successful businesswoman, who learned the hard way how low grade consistent verbal abuse caused long lasting damage to my stomach. Both books are a "must" for any woman feeling she & her mate are "talking a different language" (see back cover of first book.)

Applying Ethics is a wonderful introductory text.My freshmen enjoy it as compared to other books because of its readable essays, helpful outlines, and current examples; while I appreciate its logical depth and comprehensiveness.Excerpts of major philosophers were selected carefully to provide a representative glimpse of a theory without overwhelming the new student.The editors were wisely unafraid to select topical essays which sometimes take a more unusual and philosophically solid position on a 'popular' issue.Topical overviews are concise and precise, while outlining all major positions.My only criticism is that Olen fails to present Rawls himself before providing Bayer's critique (which is, by the way, sufficient reason in itself to buy the book). ... Decoding the Ethics Code : A Practical Guide for Psychologists
I found this book very easy to read. It described each code very well and provided examples both what is right and what is wrong. Great way to learn the ethics code and become familiar with it.

Essential reading for psychotherapists
Decoding the Ethics Code is must reading for psychotherapists from all the mental health guilds. Very organized
The principles of organization are very well presented here.Not too many anecdotes, but enough to get the point across.Also, this book lists the basic principles of home organization in an easy-to-read and easy-to-reference manner.A very practical how-to book!

GREAT BOOK
I used this book when I was trying to get my new house organized.It had helpful ideas for each room in the house.It was a long book...but was easy to read.You can also jump from chapter to chapter depending upon your current needs.

Best for the clutter-afflicted who want their lives in order
My family raised me in an insanely messy environment. My father is likely one of the worst packrats alive, and my mother continuously hides her junk in countless bags. A few years ago I realized my own extreme clutter was a reflection of the disarray in my mind and, cyclically, reason for even further confusion. Perhaps this book isn't for those who already know where cleaning supplies are kept and how planners are used efficiently. But I highly recommend this book if you've not been blessed enough to have learned the aforementioned time-management skills other college students know as truisms (there is SOME reasoning behind the "for Dummies" title!). Excellent
After having just visited Africa, I wanted to get a better feel for what it's really like to be Maasai. This book is very real, and gives interesting insights from the "inside". I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Bridging two worlds.
There couldn't be two more different places than New York City and the lands of the Maasai in Tanzania.Tepilit Ole Saitoti's story of his journey in and between these two worlds is fascinating.I am looking forward to the update he is writing now that he is a Maasai Elder.This insight into another land and culture is a gift.

Excellent book, very accurate and really worth the money. It gives the picture of a boy growing up as a real Maasai and the new life in civilized world of Germany and USA - a man between two cultures and the difficult question to decide which way to go along. Excellent Resource
Leila Ahmed's "Woman and Gender in Islam: Historical Roots of a Modern Debate" is an outstanding contribution to the field of Middle Eastern Women's Studies. Ahmed explores and effectively dissects the many intersections between women, gender, and Islam. Her book is readable and makes an excellent sourcebook for those who are interested in the historical foundations of women and Islam.
Everyone should read this
By far the best scholarly and historical work amidst the increasing number of books on this topic.Particularly interesting is the discussion of how Muslim caliphs adopted the Persian custom of having huge imperial harems.Of course, this is one of the aspects of "Muslim" culture that really tantalized the early Orientalists, as discussed by Edward Said in his book on the subject.

Who really knew Sol Alinsky?
Soon I will celebrate my 84th birthday; I'm originally from NYC and lived in the West Bronx where I saw and heard Sol Alinsky speak at building cooperatives and other organizational events on various occasions. Sol Alinsky was NOT a Marxist and those who attribute this to him never saw or heard him when he was a young and very alive human being. He was an honest, sincere American patriot.
