5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book to learn about diversity
This is an excellent book for someone who is learning about diversity. This book isn't 100% perfect but it's a start for someone to learn about diversity in society. The author tried to address each group without bias (as much as possible).

1-0 out of 5 stars Very biased against "Whites"
It is a shame to think that some teachers are using this as their only text.As such, it gives a totally distorted view of so-called "Anglos" and "Whites" in America. For instance, in the chapters on American Indians, the Spanish depravity visited on the indigenous peoples in what is now the American west and southwest isn't even mentioned. The authors assertions of peaceful assimilation by the Spanish of the indigenous peoples (p. 199) is irresponsible and absurd. But this book is sure to please the America-hating politically correct crowd that equates white European Americans with Satan.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Interethnic Relations In America" forces me think
Early this Spring I decided to take on the task ofan Honors Intercultural Studies course at De Anza College. Although I had taken many classes of the same genre, little could have prepared me for the mass ofknowledge that I would obtain. Through reading an average of 60-80 pages of"Interethnic Relations in America" each week, I have been able togain not only a cultural perspective, but a sociological and historical onetoo! I have found that although it is challenging because it contains SOmuch information, that it reigns as a great work because it is seeminglynon-biased, very modern, and well written. I would definetly reccommendthis book to people of all ages, races, ethnicities, regardless of their"cultural baggage." I have been forced to think, and thus I feelcompelled to share my experinces with others. This book can truly changeyour life in many ways! Not to mention that my professor has used it atboth Stanford and Berkeley in the past! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Quilts of Gee's Bend
This book is a testament to the ingenuity, tenacity, and faith of the women of Gee's Bend who, from their lives of deep poverty and hard scrabble living, still found the inner resources to create functional, yet strikingly original art.
5-0 out of 5 stars A BEAUTIFUL REMINDER
Not only did I purchase this book, I purchased one for a friend of mine who is a quilter. The quilts and the incredible stories behind them are powerful motivators for those who wish to accomplish anything, not just quilting. It is the triumph of the human spirit and proves that deep down, each of us has an indominable core.I am envious of the skill that these women posessed and of the oral history and cultural traditions which have been created and passed down. It's a reminder of the scope of human potential.

5-0 out of 5 stars great collection of American Art
I am an Alabama native. I have visited Gee's Bend, Alabama many times, but mainly to EAT!! They have more than pretty quilts in Gee's Bend. I have seen the quilts but because I love quilts and even tried unsuccessully to make one but, not being an expert, I guess I did not appreciate how popular the Gee's Bend quilts would become until I saw the story on CBS's Sunday Morning about the quilts being on display at the Whitney Museum in New York. The current quilters visited the opening at the museum and song those old gospel songs to their many fans.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars "Our Eastern Affairs are Complex Beyond All Words"
History is useful not only for revealing the past, but also in foreshadowing what the future might hold.In the case of Iraq, this is a very important matter. This book by Liora Likutz, a scholar who is currently at the Truman Institute in Jerusalem, describes the making of modern Iraq through the life of one the two key protagonists who drew its boundaries on the map following World War I.Those two individuals were T.E. Lawrence and Gertrude Bell. While the broad outline of Lawrence's life and exploits in the Middle East are well known to many, Gertrude Bell remains more of a mystery. This book attempts to pull back that veil.Anyone who seeks to understand the currents and tides swirling underneath modern Iraq needs to understand how this country came to be, and the complex life of Gertrude Bell is a good place to start.
5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding Irak
Facinating and exciting point of view of Irak through Gertrude Bell's life.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Muddle of Everywhere
For those who still believe that the forced (We voted on this WHEN?) conversion of the America into a "multicultural," ever-less-European caldron of aggravated grievances and simmering sensibilities remains limited to places like Los Angeles and New York, they should read clinical psychologist Mary Pipher's glowing account of the "transformation" of Lincoln, Nebraska. Lincoln is Pipher's hometown, one of the quiet American towns targeted by the U.S Office of Refugee Resettlement as a "preferred community for newly arrived refugees."
2-0 out of 5 stars The Plight of Refugees in a magnificent piece
The convergence of a fascinating and easy to follow narrative with a serious discussion of a theme of world proportions is seldom found in literature. Best seller author Mary Phipher met the challenge of writing with from the perspective of a health professional and a human being who exhibits compassion for a "people group," the refugee population.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A Driveling Story of Self Pity
Despite my profound love of literature, I could not bring myself to enjoy "The Woman Warrior".The monotonous writing style as well as the bland anecdotes did nothing but block me off from being immersed from the story.I felt myself yawning everytime I had to start a new chapter, and would have been estatic when I finished the book had I contained the energy to feel in such a way.I closed the book feeling drained, bored, tired, and unfulfilled. And if that was what I was aiming for while I read, I wouldn't enjoy the skill at all.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not a must-read, but a should-read
As a student of literature, I have had to read Kingston's "No Name Woman" numerous times as it is widely anthologized. This story represents the first of five sections in "The Woman Warrior."
5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
I just finished reading this book as a requirement for my research in Folklore and Mythology class. At first, I wasn't exactly thrilled at the opportunity to read it, for I'm sure that anyone can relate with the pains that go with required reading. However, I was truly blown away.

3-0 out of 5 stars academic in nature
This book is well written. It was written to be used in a class room setting (the book states this) If I would have know I wouldn't have purchased it. I was looking for a more personal, engaging insight on the way of life in Japan. The book is laid out nicely and still a good read, just a bit too text like.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well-written, literate, useful...
My wife and I found this book very helpful, prior to our first trip to Japan. We have been somewhat fearful of this trip, because of langugage and obvious cultural differences.Nevertheless, thisbook added to our understanding of current cultural traits, ideas, and ideals in Japan; their historical origins; their meaning to both Japanese and first-visit foreigners; and the countervailing Western forces eroding at the "pure strain" traits or ideals. All in all, this book is a fascinating synopsis of Japanese thinking about unique Japanese traits.
5-0 out of 5 stars Exploring tolerance and understanding
I stumbled upon this thoroughly enlightening book at the end of my third year of living in a small bucolic town in the mountains of rural Japan. While it is intended as an overview and introduction to various things that can make the Japanese seem different and enigmatic to outsiders, many of the topics are discussed from their historical evolution, which helps to construct them in a much fuller and as a more complete figure. Moreover, the subjects covered are often unobservable to the casual visitor and neophytic foreign transplant, yet are central to understanding the Japanese character.Where I had just simply witnessed and pondered over many baffling and seemingly contradictory actions of the people whom I was residing amongst at first, after reading this book I came to understand them in a much clearer and tolerant way.Another result, incidentally, was it also helped ease me through an extremely delayed case of culture shock. We should note that problems arise not through stereotyping (which, despite our fanatical political correctness at times does tend to be accurate more often than not), but when we use these generalizations to assert a cultural superiority, or inferiority as the case may be, and to define differences as being anything other than such.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars GONNA DEPLOY? BUY THIS BOOK.
This is a great book to get your feet wet. It introdues this historical characters both current players and past. Given this context it is a great spring board for other texts into researching the Middle East and interesting religious, cultural and political concepts in the Middle East.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not Bad for a Starter
This book, like all of the ones in this series I'm guessing, really is for those who don't know much about the subject.I would not recommend it to those who have read a history of the region and have been staying abreast of current events. This volume is, however, useful for anyone who is only just begining to study the Middle East--I would heartily recommend it to a high school student for instance. There are some mispellings and inaccuracies.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Story Behind the Story
I bought this book as sort of a starting point to read other books about the current Middle East mess, and found it to be quite informative; provides a number of maps and pictures to show the layout of the region's past, and brings the reader up to date (though it's ever-changing) on the turmoil going on there now.The Middle East for Dummies, however, is not just Bullets Over Baghdad; it contains information about it's colorful culture throughout the years, and serves well as a reference guide, whether, as other posts state, it is biased or not. ... Michael Barone of Read more

Reviews (18)

5-0 out of 5 stars Barone shows us how similar our issues around immigration today are to those of 1900
With all the agitation around immigration it is important to have as much actual information as possible rather than getting sucked in by old impressions and media slant.Michael Barone is one of our generation's treasures. He knows a great deal about our country and its politics because he has devoted a lifetime to the study of our history, our culture, and our politics. He says what he says the way he says it in order to inform rather than couching things carefully to win you to a certain point of view.
2-0 out of 5 stars This Is Not 1925
The idea behind this book is an interesting one.Mr. Barone suggests that, although some fear the recent influx of immigrants to the United States, there's really nothing to worry about if we learn the lessons of history.Three of the largest immigrant populations from the early part of the 20th century, he points out, have "woven themselves" into mainstream American life with great success. Now, three large "new" populations can do the same, based on their similarities to those who came before. The black population ("immigrant" in the sense that it moved from the rural South, practically a foreign country, to the industrial North) can weave itself into mainstream American life as the Irish did, the Latino population as the Italians did, and the Asian population as the Jews did.Sounds pretty good, and Barone has plenty of statistical and historical evidence to support himself. Then he goes and ruins it with a political bias he claims he doesn't have.5-0 out of 5 stars Quotas and victims
Some of the criticisms of Mr. Barone's work, mostly from the anti-immigration nativists, seem to me to be wholly misguided. What Mr. Barone is encouraging people to do is to think differently about how America views immigration AND race. I think he clearly, and devastatingly, shows that today's victim-oriented, quota-based debate hurts the people it's designed to help. He also encourages Americans to be more hopeful about the ability of society to slowly assimilate different 'races' (he makes the point frequently that Jews and the Irish were once thought of as a 'race') and the ability of those 'races' to succeed in America.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Second Edition - more interesting trivia
Like the prior edition this book contains a collection of trivia questions and answers that center around world culture, politics and geography. As such it is not only interesting but also educational. So many trivia books contain such obscure information that it has no value other than as a trivia question. That is not the case with either the first or the second edition of this book."World Trivia", second edition is a complete rewrite that contains none of the questions of the first edition.Michael Smith again tackles one of the most difficult areas of trivia because culture, politics and many aspects of geography are in a state of constant flux. So, while the trivia questions and answers are accurate today, within a few years many of them may not be.With well-chosen educational and truly interesting questions the book is a recommended purchase.

4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but too short
"World Trivia" is a small book filled with trivia questions from around the world. Each page has a single question with the answer on the reverse. It contains an excellent selection of questions that I found genuinely interesting, however, with only one question on a page it contains only just over 130 questions. It would have been nice if there were two or three questions per page.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars depressing but enlighting
The words are inspiritional and delivered from an untaintedsource . The subject matter is depressing . To think that we( the white man )could have done so many things to the Indians is unbelieveable . The thoughts are simple and uncomplicated and comfort me . Not all busy with modern mentalty or crazy disjointed thoughts . have re-read it twice and will hold on to it to read again .

5-0 out of 5 stars Now and Forever
I will keep this book Now and Forever to remind me of those that have gone before. My ancestors are not and never were just those to whom I am related by blood but those to whom I am related by Spirit. These are they who went before and suffered the ultimate loss. But they left behind a small crumb for me to follow and I honor them for this. Here are their words. Small crumbs of that guidance.
5-0 out of 5 stars From One Who Knows Animals Have Souls
I have bought many books here, but have never felt compelled to write a review until now.As a person who teaches dogs to help the disabled, I know firsthand the oneness you can experience with the spirit of an animal.I have seen loving, selfless dogs heal the lives of so many who were outcast and emotionally broken. Therefore, when I read this work, my soul leapt with joy to finally, FINALLY! find out that others (Nations!) feel about the natural world as I do. While this work doesn't focus solely on animals, but encompasses the Native American view on many, many topics, including life, death, living, nature, The Creator and their experiences with white culture, I truly felt I had found "home" when I came upon their beliefs about animals. In my family's religion, man is supreme, animals have little to no value and when they die, that's it, they're just dead. This wonderful book gives a different perspective on The Spirit of The Creator as it is reflected in people, nature AND animals.A perspective in need of hearing and teaching to so many who today, place no value on our natural world. To me, it was the proverbial cool drink of water on a hot, hot day.Read it and find your soul.Rather, read it, embrace it and reclaim your soul.No doubt you will find it waiting patiently for you in the wilderness ............... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Worsley Followers Pay Attention ...
Unschuld is a scholar, a genuine translator that doesn't leave much to the imagination. His understanding of the cultural contexts (as there are many) in which TCM grew are un-matched in terms of written text.Get his books, if not for the honest look he takes at TCM, but for the fact that his works are the bread and butter of TCM.The gross ignorance of the classics among so called "Doctors of TCM" in the western world is amazing.Don't guess about TCM, either learn to read Chinese or get good translations of the classics. Not pocket translations at a American grade five reading level. If we expect people to view us as Doctors, we should study like one.
5-0 out of 5 stars Milestone
This book is a milestone for those of us who wish to understand Chinese medicine. As others have noted, this is not a translation of the Su Wen, but a thorough commentary. I consider it a necessary introduction before attempting to read the translation. Once Unschuld's translation is released, I will feel more prepared to grasp the meaning behind the text. Unschuld is an expert in this field and I'm not sure what a previous reviewer meant by self appointed. I think his experience, education, previous works, and position as director of his academic department speak for themselves! If you wish to go deeper into your understanding of the medicine, buy this book!

3-0 out of 5 stars Lost in the Contradictions of Misunderstanding
Robert Feld is welcome to embrace Unschuld's highly scholarly, hard to read, disjointed text. My primary point is that this is NOT the Nei Jing, it is not the text, it is not readable as such, and it is not a guide for would-be doctors interested in practicing based on Nei Jing. That much should be more clear in the description of the book, but it is not. It should be called "Essays on Nei Jing."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I have fun learning Japanese!
I think Nakama is an excellent Japanese textbook for a college student like me. It has a total of 12 chapters, each featuring a main topic such as daily routine, family, health, restaurant, department store etc.Yes the book does work better in a classroom with the guidance of a teacher. It has many interesting activities to be done in a group with other classmates. When I just started learning hiragana and katakana, I really appreciate the mnemonic diagrams which are rather funny and therefore easy to remember. For example, it says that the hiragana の looks like a "No smoking" sign and is therefore pronounced as "no". The book also has many pictures which make learning Japanese fun. Besides, it also introduces Japanese culture in the beginning of each chapter.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not a good book - Are there better out there?
I think your response to this book depends on how you like to learn a foreign language. Personally, I prefer 'direct method' teaching, which means that you learn a foreign language in that language with very little translation into your native tongue. Nakama is not designed for direct method and in fact is far too laden with English directions, translations, cultural explanations, etc. While this is understandable, to a limited extent, with a beginner level textbook it would be better
