5-0 out of 5 stars A must for everyone!!!
This audio book was a great source of information, not only for helping me figure out my past anger issues, but how to deal with future issues. The examples in the book were real life and I could place myself in those situations.I have listened to it more than once, and I still keeping finding ways to avoid anger and work on the real issues with my kids, parents, co-workers and spouse.Again, a must for everyone...it may sound strange, but would make a great wedding present!

5-0 out of 5 stars A gift
Required reading not only for feminists - both men and women -but for writers and other artists. Valuable for all humans who have been silenced at some point in their lives. Since that includes most children, this book has much to offer all of us.4-0 out of 5 stars A New Way of Knowing
i'm one of those individuals who believes that frued was a fraud. and i might be indulging in some essentialist solopsism when i assert that there was never anything he said that would or could be of any value to thisblack man. but to the extent that i can function well in the world withoutany deference to freud's notions of mental health and self-regard, i mightbe onto something. i can say without a doubt that hooks and west werepowerfully instrumental in helping me deal with my existential demons bycontextualizing my struggle to be recognized as a thinking man who is blackin american society. as the old gospel song says 'the burdens of my heartrolled away'.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Philosophy/Little History
This is a very interesting book. It differs from similar books in this area (e.g., Meyers, Pagels) in that it is high on philosophy, weak on history, and includes line by line copies of the coptic text along with English translations along with commentary. As such it goes beyond Pagels and Meyers as a useful resource for people interested in primary sources, but it may not be as helpful to people looking for historical commentary.
5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome, Pristine, Gender-Balanced Christianity, Yeshua & Magdalene Wisdom Co-Teachers
This book is so spiritually inspiring, so perfectly presented, that you feel a surge of recognition, like you always KNEW.Here is a religious "system" that blends original pure Christianity with Buddhist and Vedanta high and bright teachings. It is like a Theory of Everything for alternative Christians.Leloup writes as a holy scribe; it's amazing that we're reading a translation! Flawlessly rendered. Every verse comes open so vividly with his explanation and insight, so many aha! moments. It's a faith-changing book, not just life-changing.His explanation of that rascally last verse of the Gospel of Thomas is worth the purchase price of the book. That's the verse you recall, where Jesus explains he can make Magdalene "fully male", causing nay-sayers to claim alternative Christianity and gnosticism is sexist. But. The word for male really meant "human" -- so Yeshua was not being sexist, but saying the two of them joined together in wholeness become fully human. Leloup tells us just how we today can reach this fully human "anthropos" state. He reveals Yeshua & Magdalene's sacred union and alternative teachings in pristine simple words that jump out at you and say, You knew this!
5-0 out of 5 stars The True First Gospel of the New Testament
Gentle, thought provoking and honest to a fault. It is sad that this Gospel was omitted from the Bible at the Council of Nicea.Had it been included it would be complete, rather than fragments of relics.Women would be able to play an equal role in society, and the Christian Church would have far fewer problems to have to face than it does today, for the Holy Bible itself would be more easily understood and the true thoughts of Jesus would be more easily understood. The world would be a better place if this book were included in the New Testament. It isn't though, but for anyone serious about World issues it is just the book to help put society (humanity) back on course. Those with open and searching minds will find this book breath-taking. ... After witnessing the recent horror (school massacre) inflicted upon the Amish community, "Everyday Sacred" is a timely reminder that they and the human spirit will endure. It reminds us to ask not what we lack, but to appreciate, daily, what we already have.
2-0 out of 5 stars The Cure for the unnamed Problem
It's a great description of the Spritual Cure.... but we never analyze what was wrong in the first place... it's a type of Narcissism which in her case comes into conflict with her religious values and forced her to develop her spritual walk as a cure.
5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational!
This book fell into my lap at a time when I was "most ready" to hear it, so my review may be tainted. It was so inspirational to me, and I absolutely loved the analogies and word pictures that Sue Bender used.I refer to those illustrations in my mind nearly every day.I use this book as my nightstand "go to book" when I need a spiritual pick-me-up.It is beautiful, articulate, and powerful.I have sent copies to nearly everyone I know because I believe anyone and everyone, no matter what your spiritual beliefs are, can benefit from Ms Bender's eloquent writing. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Getting to the core of female sexuality... one layer at a time.
Play with yourself.Play with a friend.Play with a toy. This book explores most imaginable areas of female sexuality, including the parts that women are ashamed of discussing, and those that we, as women, are anxiously waiting for it to be OK to discuss!
5-0 out of 5 stars First time buyer
A good friend bought this book for me after going to a cake event in San Francisco and I am so happy she did.
5-0 out of 5 stars Women have come a long way, baby!
This book is a real breakthrough for women of all ages who desire to fully embrace their sexuality and break free of outmoded codes of sexual behavior. This is not a technique or clinical advice book, but rather a real live connection to women's true fantasies and turn-ons,vividly brought to life by honest sexually-driven women - a shattering of obsolete stereotypes! A statement in the chapter "Express yourself" especially hit home with me: "At the end of the day, you are defined by how you feel, not by what someone else thinks of you". So true. For any person, man or woman, who feels passionately about women finally coming into their own as whole human beings, this book is the real deal. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice enough for what it is
This was suggested in the Style books, but it's really a glammed up history book overview of French femmes fatale over the centuries: Lots of historical factoid, with a very few touches of style advice.Entre Nous by Debra Ollivier will tell you more about how to actually be a femme fatale.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what it purports to be
I wish I had heeded "Amberlis's" review. This is no more than a long essay describing various French women in history and some attitudes of modern French women. The historical references are interesting, but several are repeated (some more than once) in different chapters of the book; and the last chapter (quoting at length from Henry VIII's diaries regarding his amorous adventures with a French woman) seems to have been thrown in to make the book seem longer and more titillating. The most annoying feature is the large number of typographical and grammatical errors (for example, "chaise lounge" instead of "chaise longue)."I would have enjoyed reading a condensed (and better edited)version in the New Yorker, but I really regret having paid $10.00 for the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow:)
A little bit about my lens with which I view the world: I'm a 21 year old woman, a history major currently attending a military college with only 10% other women (which I don't mind,) straight, and a republican (fine, yell at me later.)That said, this book was my introduction into the world of herstory and just being a loving woman (both self and others.)I've always had these ideas hanging in the back of my head, and always been bothered by some blatant inequities, so ingrained in our societal mind that they're apparent even at my school, which does everything it can to ensure our sex does not hinder or help us in relation to the boys.I really enjoyed this new view of my body part which until now, was really just a huge pain, a constant reminder that I wasn't as fast or as strong as the boys, and that simply living entailed so many more risks than they had to take. I wasn't so cool with the section on abortion, but that's the author's choice, I kinda believe that unborn women have rights too.
5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, pro-woman read
This book was given to me to read by a friend. It was one of the most inspiring, woman-friendly books I have ever read.I would encourage everyone, man, woman, whatever, to read it.I may not use sea sponges as sanitary pads or trust my sexual health to herbs, but if this book taught me one thing, it was to think before making a degrading comment about another woman, to accept myself, flaws and all, and to encourage other women to love themselves. As for my bias, well I am a pro-choice, female, democrat college student. But I encourage everyone to read it.Even if most of it offends you, I can't imagine anyone reading this book coming out of it worse off (ie disliking women, and all people, more) than they did prior to reading it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Like your fairy godmother explaining good shoes
I was hopeless; I wore comfortable... shoes usually from Payless. Nothing wrong with that until I was bored and waiting for friends at a bookstore and saw the pretty red cover of this book and briefly read bits and parts. Left the store without buying it; but it had some strange hold on me. A month later, back in the store I picked it up again to read bits more, but again, left without buying. The few parts I read had me. I had to go back and buy it. So strange to have to buy it; like an addiction.

Editorial Review

When film experts talk about the "woman's picture," a Hollywood genre that flourished in the '30s, '40s, and '50s, they often squabble over whether these films were liberating or constraining. Jeanine Basinger argues that they were both at the same time. She maintains that they freed their female protagonists to break social bonds while also punishing any women who seemed too free and feisty. This lively and exceedingly thorough book covers every major aspect of this fascinating film genre, including the roles female stars were expected to play, the fabulous clothes they wore, the social behaviors they were condemned to adopt, the ways they responded to and were treated by men, and the ideals of femininity Hollywood producers tried to impress upon their audiences. 5-0 out of 5 stars Any Book That Will Quote A Cleo Moore Film Deserves 5 Stars
This is one of the most enjoyable "film studies" I have ever come across, essentially about "soap opera" 'women's pictures' of the 1930's and 1940's but expanding into the 1920's and 1950's abit and touching on other types of films and the great women stars from this time period. From Kay Francis (who is the cover girl and Basinger's main muse for this tome) to Rita Hayworth, this is a wonderful book for any one obssessed with films from the era, it's like finding a new best friend to talk about these classic films.Basinger writes informatively yet in plain academic-free language making the book a pleasuer to read - and she knows when to crack wise and when to be serious, no mean feat. It's a skill a lot of "movie historians" don't have.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my all time favorite books
If you love movies you must read Ms. Basinger's marvelous study of "women's pictures" which encompasses the stars that acted in them, the directors that guided them, the writers that gave them life and the studios that distributed them.Hollywood history, women's history, art history all rolled into one readable and thought provoking volume. This one is right up there with Louise Brooks by Barry Paris as one of the best books on film and those who created it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Basinger's "A Woman's View" is a Great History Read
A Woman's View, by Jeanne Basinger, was rightfully the most interesting history based book I have ever read.Although it can be lengthy at times, it touches on subjects in which I had barely any knowledge of, and shows how it was reflecting the time period of the 30's, 40's, 50's, and 60's. Seeing as though this was about women right after the women's rights movement in the 20's, this book shows how Hollywood used female movie stars to incorporate the countries opinions on them. With that, I thought the introduction chapter on the genre of these types of movies was absolutely spectacular. It really made me have so much respect for women during these time periods. They had such class and such morals, which, sad to say, is starting to slowly fade away, or can at least be argued that it is.

2-0 out of 5 stars What a mess
Gosh, I am almost speechless. Flanagan receives two stars for her fine way with words. Had she written a coherent and believable book that had a thesis backed by the facts of either her life or anyone's life, I would have been pleased to give her at least four stars. It wasn't so much that I don't agree with what she says, but rather that I am not sure what she said. Of course, that does make a reasoned discussion about her viewpoint rather problematic for a reviewer...
4-0 out of 5 stars Really Liked This Book
I really enjoyed this book. I have read a lot of the "Mother Angst" and "Mommy War" genre (if you will)and feel that this was one of the better of books.
3-0 out of 5 stars Well written and often funny, but...
Ms. Flanagan seems to nestle herself in a definite gray area. She considers herself a stay-at-home mom but has a full-time nanny for 3 years?!Who's side is she on?Working moms are often given high regard by Flanagan, doing oh-such-important work in her eyes while she mocks a hover-PTA type mom with her "working friends".These women, like Flanagan, leave their children with women from Third world countries, and tell themselves it's not "daycare".Yet Flanagan straddles both sides of the stay-home v. go to work debate. She stays "at home" while her nanny takes care of her boys and housework, while she visits a therapist and consults with her personal organizer (I'm not kidding!)Flanagan tells of her own mother "abandoning" her to go to work when she was 12, and how depressed she became because of it--yet she does it to her own children as infants! To me she comes off as someone who hasn't done the grunt work herself, but knows how you, the SAHM, who actually raises her own children 15 hours a day should do it.There are truly funny bits, and interesting biographical data about Peg Bracken, Erma Bombeck, and Martha Stewart.Check this book out from the library though, because after you read a couple chapers, you'll know (ad nausem) that Ms. Flanagan doesn't need your money. ... This book was very disappointing.Every chapter seems to constantly review the negative people and situations that "women constantly think of" giving examples. On and on with all the negativity, it was depressing. The advice given was what any friend could tell you. There is no new advice, just seems to be a review of everyone's problems and to "do something else", so you don't think about it. I was bored and disappointed, the worst book I've read in a long time. Made me think too much about what a waste of money it was!

3-0 out of 5 stars lots of repetition
This book will probably be helpful for the average woman with minor problems with overthinking who hasn't as yet identified this as her problem. The book could have been much shorter and said just as much. There is a lot of repetition that will probably prove helpful for women trying to figure out if this is their problem as many synoptic examples of overthinking are given. For others that have read a lot about anxiety etc.it will be less helpful and very repetitive. Most of the strategies will not help those with serious debilitating problems, but may provide relief for women (or men) with occassional bouts of anxiety and overthinking. Methods of distraction and telling oneself to stop are only marginally helpful to those with more serious problems in this area, as if one could stop that easily, presumably one would have done so long ago. This book will mostly help some people to realize they can give themselves permission to stop ruminating. For those who are beyond being helped by that, it offers little more than a bandage. There isn't much scientific information on nuerology outside of a paragraph or two. The rest is mostly anecdotal. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Getting Dated
This was probably an ok book in 1996, but I really feel that it has lost relevance, many more couples these days are choosing not to have children, and I think the issues are different.I would like to see an updated book that talked about what the choice is like now. Some of the issues are still the same ... who do you leave your stuff to when you die, but that was not an issue I thought was well covered in the first place.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very sensitively written, awesome book.
The author approaches the subject with incredible sensitivity without "baby bashing" and acknowledging that there is grief and loss involved. She goes into different situations where women decide not to have children, touching on commonly perceived stereotypes of childless women and debunking them, such as the idea that childless women do not have a nuturing side, that they are cold and bitter. This is an incredible book that I would recommend to anyone wavering on the motherhood question.

5-0 out of 5 stars Choice made long ago
As a woman who made the choice at a young age NOT to have children, it was great to find a book that supported and explored that option. Bravo! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice to Have book rather than a Must Have
From a broad perspective this book is helpful in delineating the various periods of costume. The patterns are useful, but not plentiful.
4-0 out of 5 stars Essential for Costumers and Fashion Designers
This is an excellent book all around, with highlights including dissections of period garments with simple outlines of pattern shapes. Though the patterns are not on a grid, they are accompanied with a scale and can be decently eyeballed for a quick project. Beginniners will be inspired and the advanced will have a handy quick reference guide. A good pattern book, and a nice read too. Anyone serious about costume or garment contruction should have this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Basically Important
This is the first costume text I purchased (even before knowing I was going to go to school for costume design), and even after receiving and collecting loads of other texts on costume and the history thereof, this is still the best basic book I've come across. And, yes, I actually read it instead of just looking at the pics (of which there are many, many, great examples of historical dress).Although not entirely scintillatingly written (hard to do with a sometimes dry subject such as costume history, it has to be said), it is full of information that I wouldn't have otherwise known (and I've been fascinated by clothing all my life).Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Theology of Sophia
Johnson sets out in this book to articulate metaphors for God that are feminine in nature. This serves to counter-balance prodominantly masculine metaphors received from classical tradition. The term Sophia is particularly important.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for any inclusive theology
Over the course of Christian history, women have been disenfranchised and oppressed.Patriarchal systems and androcentric mentalities have marginalized women sociologically and psychologically, even within the Christian community.Elizabeth Johnson believes this oppression stems from the language used for God.Because God is referred to exclusively and literally as a male, women have reduced roles within Christianity.Johnson seeks to use new imagery and metaphors for speech about God, in order to emancipate women from this oppression.Johnson recognizes that all language about God is inadequate, but using feminine imagery for God restores human dignity in women and men and helps with the flourishing of humanity.
5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting for both, men and women, lay-people and clerics.
An excellent book that one should take enough time to read slowly and thoroughly. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sensitive, informative and interesting
My long time fascination with North Africa, culminated in the mid 1980s when my husband and I lived in Algeria for one year.Since then I have tried to enlarge that experience by travelling through the area and reading about the different cultures living in North Africa. How I wish that in 1984 I had already read Elizabeth Fernea's account of her year in Marrakech!Marocco and Marrakech are obviously different cultures from that of Algeria, but the detailed descriptions Fernea gives us about feasts, customs and manners, so very sensitively rendered would have helped and would also have alerted me to the minefield of possible "faux pas" -- which in retrospect I committed by the dozens!5-0 out of 5 stars One Family's Year-Long Experience Living in Marrakesh
I am an American woman who has been living in Marrakesh for the past 9 years.I just read this book.Even though it was written in the early 1970's, I found it to be a very accurate portrayal of life in the old medina, even now.The author and her husband are anthropologists, and both spoke fluent Arabic upon their arrival, from having lived previously in Iraq and Egypt. Therefore, the author was able to converse with people daily, and understand completely, what they were saying. This is something I have never been able to do.Because of this, she is able to give a VERY detailed look at an aspect of life which is nearly impossible for most outsiders to penetrate--the hidden life of Medina women, which takes place behind high, closed walls. What she describes is very similar to what I have experienced here of life with my Moroccan husband's family, and the people who live around them in the Medina. This book is NOT a study of political or historical conditions--it is the detailed, personal history of one family's year-long experience of living, and immersing itself, in the life of Marrakesh.

4-0 out of 5 stars Insightful and realistic
I read this book in preparation for a return trip to Morocco and wish I'd read it the first time. This is a story of what it's REALLY like to move to a foreign country--non-western--and try to live as the people do. For those of us who have read books like "A Year in Provence" and suspect that it all sounds too good to be true, this book is a refreshing change. It's told from a woman's perspective, and focuses on domestic life, the sharp difference between public and home behavior in Islamic societies, the pervasiveness of religion, and male-female roles. I would have liked a bit of a broader perspective--the author's descriptions of public unrest and a strike were tantalizing, and I would have liked to know a bit more about what was going on in the country at the time, but she describes pretty clearly why Europeans or Americans, well-meaning though they may be, wouldn't necessarily be met with open arms. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Deep, Poignant, Insightful and meaningful
I tend to get attracted by a sort of synchronicity or intuitive feeling to certain books that resonate with the current process of what I call my spiritual journey. This book is one of those I would cherish and remember, and refer to, and meditate upon it. It is not only writen by someone deeply in touch with psychological understanding but also by a person inmersed consciously on her spiritual path, or inner journey towards enlightnement or liberation or full awakening of consciousness as you wish to name this subtile and many times confusing path.
5-0 out of 5 stars So good I stayed home to read it for 4 days
