4-0 out of 5 stars Long awaited callenge to the ubiquitous stay-at-home philosophy
For a woman who was raised by a working mom (who still works long into retirement) it's amazing how persuasive the stay-at-home philosophy has been in convincing me that by being a good mom was strongly tied to my willingness to quit work at stay at home.
5-0 out of 5 stars Something that needed to be said
I picked this book up in a bookstore and couldn't put it down.I had to buy it and take it home so that I could finish reading it.What a book!Thank goodness for people like Linda Hirshman, who are willing to stick their necks out and say what needs to be said, even if it doesn't agree with the latest political fashion. Her premise that women must be present in the decision-making arena if decisions are going to be made that benefit women is just common sense!I have no idea why it's controversial, although I suspect many women who are unhappy with their "choices" are now trying a bit too vigourously to defend them, now that it's too late.I bought a second copy of this book for my mother, the woman who taught me that no capable, adult person should ever be dependent on another person for her support and well-being.I bought a third copy for my sister to share with her 12-year-old daughter, because girls today need to know that the road to happiness, fulfillment and success leads straight through being able to take care of yourself.

1-0 out of 5 stars Get away from this book
I consider myself to be fairly well-read and definitely interested in women's history and gender issues and I am personally appalled at this book. This is possibly the worst researched and most misinformed book that I have read in a long tim. First, Linda Hirshman seems to care more about Betty Friedan than she does the actual history of the women's movement or the many women (including women of color and women outside the United States) who made an impact on women's lives. Just as a point of reference, Betty Friedan was actually a liberal (not radical) feminist in the second wave of the feminist movement (not the first as Ms. Hirshman claims). Also, while it is important to talk about the experiences of "elite" women, Hirshman ignores the experiences of the majority of women, who may not be white, well-educated, or wealthy. I could go on and on but I would suggest that before Hirshman announces a new type of feminism, she actually studies the feminist movement that already exists. This book is poorly written and does a disservice to women who are actually struggling with raising a family, finding meaningful work, and living in a patriarchical society. I say save your money and by a book by a real feminist...bell hooks, Gloria Steinem, Andrea Dworkin, just to name a few. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Edelman shares her own painful story and the stories of many other women who, as children or adults, lost their mothers. She explains the stages of grief and adjustment. She considers the secondary effects that can occur: the girl-child filling the lost mother's role at home for father and younger siblings. If you've lost your mother, you no longer have to face it alone. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Strongly recommended reading for all women, who have lost or who are risk for the loss of their mother
Motherless Daughters: The Legacy Of Loss by award winning journalist Hope Edelman is an informative and expertly contributive documentation of the psychological and spiritual effects the death of a mother might have on the life and psychological well being of a daughter. Deftly presenting how the absence of a nurturing maternal hand could influence the development of a daughter's self identity, and what might result from the loss of such a role model and source of emotional support, Motherless Daughters tells of why living beyond a mother's final year reminds a daughter of her exquisite separateness; how present-day relationships are defined by past losses; what the "unmothered" woman can do to reclaim her autonomy and restore her connection to the family of the motherline; and how to understand grief as an ongoing journey. Very strongly recommended reading for all women, who have lost or who are risk for the loss of their mother, Motherless Daughters is to be especially commended or its outstanding presentation of insightful and helpful material for coping with the death of a mother.
5-0 out of 5 stars Mother Loss Through Mental Illness and Abandonment
In my work as a therapist, memoir coach, and memoir writer about mother-abandonment, I have found Hope Edelman's research and knowledge a valuable asset in helping my clients and students understand the lifelong effects of mother loss, and the long path to finding the love, and the "mother" within oneself. I was blessed to meet Hope in person recently and to hear her speak. Our subjects are similar--mother loss--and she presents with such compassion her findings about the differences between women who have lost their mothers in death to those whose mothers are alive but are rejecting, uninterested, abandoning, or mentally ill--perhaps many of the above adjectives apply all at once.
5-0 out of 5 stars worth its weight in gold
I lost my mom 2 years ago and read this book for the first time shortly after her passing. I refer to it now and then for comfort. The book has been a crutch that got my through the first holidays following my mom's passing when I couldn't be with my family due to geographic distance.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST investment that I have made to personally enhance my well being.
I have to pass this along because if I didn't I would feel that you are missing out on an amazing story. One that will touch each and every one of you.Once you start reading you will have a hard time putting it down and once you do for that split second your brain will not stop processing all the ideas that start charging at you. Then once you find a sheet of paper to start writing them all down on, before you know it you'll take up a spiral notebook. Then you'll pick up the book and again to read and BAM... more ideas.
5-0 out of 5 stars Working Mothers Unite!
Carol Evans is an inspiration to all of us who don't think we have the energy to take on another day. She also made me feel good about all the choices I've made, whether they were to ramp up or slow down my carrer, given the stage of life I was at. I bought two copies with a new-mom friend in mind, but this is not just for new moms - it's for all carrer women if for nothing else, to gain some perspective.

5-0 out of 5 stars This IS How We Do It
What a joy to read Carol Evans' book.It is inspiring and fun and helps us see that the life of a working mother does not need to solely be about guilt, stress and dodging the bullets from stay-at-home moms. Her book is inspiring and real. How refreshing to hear a corporate executive talk in such a familiar and engaging voice. This is as good as any great advice from a girlfriend except that it is jam packed with great research and cold, hard facts about what we can do to make it work and which companies in corporate America are helping working moms make it work.Every working mother should have this book as a reference! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not So Much
I had been looking foward to reading this book for quite a while. From the great reviews I've read here and Laurie Notaro's thumbs up (Inside the book), I thought I had picked a winner. Like another reviewer stated, I may have cracked a few smiles but it just was not that funny to me...and I am southern! Bless her heart.

5-0 out of 5 stars On the Mark
S. Murphy was wrong to give this book only one star! The South does have niches of different culture - if you'll notice, this book also portrays many facets of living in the South! Many of which are RIGHT ON THE MONEY!
1-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Disappointing
I feel compelled to get in touch right now to let you know that if you have not obtained a copy of We're Just Like You, Only Prettier, I recommend that you do not go to the trouble. This book does not begin to live up to the positive reviews that were listed on Amazon.Having read the book, I am puzzled as to what the title refers. In my opinion, the blather of this book has nothing really to do with being "southern" except for every 10 chapters or so making an oblique reference to "southern".It seems to be rather just a collection of the ramblings of a sort of lazy, not-nearly-on the ball, "rednecky `wannabe' and proud" type person. There's nothing wrong with that, but I am disappointed that this book is/was marketed to be representative of southern culture and literature.I'm no expert on "being Southern".In my opinion, there are no experts on this because each area and region of the south has different characteristics. For what it's worth, I grew up in South Carolina and North Carolina. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Circle of Stones, Woman's Journey to Herself
I can't tell you how this book touched my spirit."How might (my) life have been different," if I had read this book when I was young and not 52 years.Better yet, how different it might have been if my own mother had read this book, or one like it, when I was young!I have recommended it to every woman who will listen, regardless of age.It is an oh, so gentle, yet oh, so powerful call to reconnect with ourselves and other women for common experience. It is NOT a man bashing book, quite the contrary, it merely calls for natural balance to be restored in our world. If you are a single father of a daughter, I recommend you read this book as a way of guiding your child...read it while she is young for future reference guidance.Mother's, it is not too late for you to learn from this book, and for you to guide your own daughters with it's wisdom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ideal for individual reflection
Now in a superbly presented fifteenth anniversary edition, Circle Of Stones is a classic spiritual guide for women featuring meditative experiences drawn from ancient cultures and rituals. Vignettes narrating the life journeys and searches of individual women guide the reader into personal reflection. Ideal for individual reflection or for reading aloud among women's circles, this moving vision of past, present, and future for women promotes awareness and understanding of female responsibilities, powers, and dreams. Woman, with a candle lighted/to help her keep faith with her own life.../a centered presence/spreading in concentric circles around her.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book! Food for daily thought and well worth your purchase
Vickie is amazing. Her story is amazing. She writes her book from the other side of accomplishment of fears, heartbreak, dissappointment, etc. There are great ideas to take with you on your journey of success and you should bring your highlighter so you can refer back to some great words of encouragement along your way. I have thouroughly enjoyed this book and I plan to share it with my women friends. We all can use a little push.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read and follow the thought process.
Milazzo explains how passion emerges and evolves and gives excellent real-life examples of women who became successful by using ideas in this book. This book is filled with excellent advice gained from experience. As Vickie says, she doesn't need a blow dryer to ride a camel and sleep in the Sahara desert. You have to love a woman who is beyond adventurous, has conquered fear and is willing to share her life and wisdom with the world. There is great advice about how to avoid distractions and a wise approach to developing daily rituals to nurture our spirits. Successful women respect the complexity of any chosen path and become students for life. The book is easy to read and follow the thought process.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Outstanding!
I have known of Vickie for several years since I had worked as a legal nurse consultant myself. For a variety of reasons, my heart just wasn't into it.I was good at it, but just didn't want to deal with the egos and power plays of attorneys.I wasn't "passionate" about legal nurse consulting.

Fiction is my preference when writing book reviews, because I love the complexity of words, stories, and the vagaries of human nature with its endless permutations. But when I received Leibovitz's astonishing compilation of photographs as a gift, I thought I might attempt an impression of page after page of females, as seen through the professional eye of one of the most important photographers of our generation.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Major Disagreements
While I realize that many readers enjoy approaching a topic through the author's personal experiences, people like myself will find much of this book self indulgent.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great informative book with heart and facts about adopting in China.
This book is very easy to read if you are thinking of adopting or are adopting from China. It is full of information on chinese culture, the adoption process, and what may happen after you get back home. Some parts brought tears to my eyes, but I am a bit sappy.I would recommend this book to people adopting, thinking of adopting from China, or those who have already adopted. It really gives a lot of information on Chinese history and why so many little baby girls are abandoned shortly after birth. My heart goes out to all the lost daughters and I hope they are all given the chance to find a forever family.

A wonderful book about extraordinary real women who deserve their own spot along side the Founding Fathers. The bravery and the guts of these women surprised me. Each one was heroic in her own way and has made me want to learn more about each one.

5-0 out of 5 stars History Comes Alive ...
This is a very fascinating book and I am glad that I was able to buy it not too long ago. I remember reading the back of the book at the bookstore and thinking, "I have to have it." That first thought hasn't changed.
4-0 out of 5 stars LOW-KEYED, INFORMATIVE AND PLEASING READ
I rather enjoyed this low-keyed take on history. The reading was easy and it was fun and I did indeed learn some facts I was unaware of.This by no means is "hard core history" and I doubt if it was ment to be.The book of course take a look a the wives of some of our founding fathers and the role they played at the time. The book appears to be reasonably researched, as any book of the nature can be, and the author uses an easy and informative style. On the otherhand, I doubt if this work will satisfy the hard core reader of history any more than it will satisfy the reader who is wanting a cozy sort of read...it sort of falls in the middle somewhere.I read it for pleasure and did receive that from it.Recommend this one. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Story of Ruth
Jam packed with wisdom and insight for all people. A must read for all women and one that you will read many times. Sure wish I had this guide when I was a young woman. Plan to use as a discussion book for a spirituality group. A fabulous book to give as a gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars Motivation for coping with the daily grind of life
I read "The Story of Ruth" about a year after I read "Scarred by Struggle," which is also by Dr.Chittister. Both books offer inspriation for dealing with difficulties based on a biblical story. The difference between the type of advice they offer, is that "The Story of Ruth," contends more with the daily struggles that confront us in our lives, whereas "Scarred by Struggle" offers advice more suitable to a particular setback, such as an end of a relationship, or loss of job.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Story of Ruth-----A Beautiful Gift
Every mother should gift her daughter with this beautiful book! Joan Chittister unfolds beautifully and clearly what every mother wishes her daughters to know in order to become the full persons they were created to be.Each example from the Story of Ruth powerfully illustrates "delineating moments in every human life...... points after which we are never the same again".In The Story of Ruth, Joan Chittister shows us the qualities of Naomi and Ruth as they face life and make choices.... but more than that, Chittister confirms, refreshes and energizes the "stuff" that all women hold within themselves. This is an en-courgaging book for all women...mothers daughters, grandmothers.....women....single or married..... and it is also a book for MEN!For within these pages there is the depth of thought and experience lived by "the other half of humanity." Men will find the richness of this insight invaluable....an enhancement to their own perspective and attitude toward creation.

Great Book with women as they should be seen. But you've got to be mature enogh to appreciate it and for the guys looking for cheap porn and not art recommend you just skip this! But if you want to see women without makeup or any fancy hair style this is a definite recommendation to add your collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT
I LOVE THE BOOK... IT IS A COMBINATION OF GREAT ART AND ENTERTAINMENT!

5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful!! and full of life
I normally don't like to write these reviews, I feel art and music are such subjective experiences, you really need to check it out for yourself. But I had to say that this was a very beautiful book. Its an intimate view into a world, most of us men rarely get to be a part of, especially living in such a fast paced world. Veronique Vial captures these passing moments, tip toeing her way through the homes of some well known and before-they-were-famous woman. All the more reason to appreciate this book. Being a photographer, I can also appreciate the clean straight forward layout, that really shows off her great work. Her previous Men Before Ten am, I found too dark and over designed. Its hard to compare the two, because of the subject, but the printing on Women is superior and it has brighter and livelier feel. Her photographs really capture the moment, which is what great photography is all about.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Karrine Steffans Sees The Light
in that the whole industry exploits vulnerable women of color such as Karrine Steffans.I know some would say that they participated voluntarily but I hear stories such as Ms. Steffans regarding music industry's exploitation and abuse of women who starred in rap videos. The whole hip hop video scene has come under fire recently by all sectors of society for its sexual and violent content.
3-0 out of 5 stars Lacking something
Karrine's story was gripping, but there was emotion missing. I felt like she was just sitting back, giving a list of things that happened and not really grasping the effects of them. Regardless, I think she is a strong woman and I admire her willingness to say, "ENOUGH!" and get her stuff together.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Entertaining Read
I really liked reading this book. I finished it in one day. At first I felt bad for. Then, as I read more, I thought she was stupid and by the end of the book I questioned whether she learned anything at all. I mean, yes she knows her mistakes, but I dont think she has learned from them. Overall, I think this book was a great read. I would recommended it to anyone who wants to live the Hollywood lifestyle. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars dumping the baby with the bath water
Mahmood has a pleasant, easy-going style, which makes for good reading. She makes every effort in her ethnographic work to put herself into the place of the women of the mosque movement. She seems to look at the situation from the presupposition that people are purely products of their circumstances, which precludes much in the way of personal choice.I prefer to believe we do have choice. While I respect the choice these women have made, I think it would be a mistatke to assume that there's no coersion or oppression in their lives. That is, it's fine to accept the choices people make, but oppression is still oppression.Yes, let's see things as much as we are able from the subject's point of view, but lets not pretend oppression and subjugation aren't still oppression and sujugation.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Radically New Way of Thinking About Feminist Issues in the Arab World
Radical feminists, of the post-structuralist or deconstructionist blend, have accustomed us to put into question notions that have long been a constitutive part of the liberal/progressive agenda and to critically reexamine well-established categories such as gender, class or race. It should therefore come as no surprise if Saba Mahmood, an anthropologist trained in the intellectual hotbed of UC Berkeley, provides a description of the Muslim world that goes against the grain of conventional wisdom and shatters many certainties held dear by feminists and liberals alike.
