The Beauty Within
Ironically I was in a spa getting a facial when I picked up a copy of this book.After I read it I had to buy it.The photos and the quotes in it are so poignant and true to the "real" women who said them.To me it is a fascinating book that every woman should have on her coffee table.It really makes you feel, no matter what your stage in life, that real beauty comes from within.

These women are wonderful.
This book is a wonderful celebration of the strength and lifetime beauty of the some marvelous women.Their images and insights give encouragement to women of all ages that "the best is yet to come."This would be a great book for a discussion group.I first saw it in my doctor's office.The best part of the book is that it is real.

Very Informative
Text is laid out very well, easy to read.There is a lot of good information in this book related to aging--physical, emotional, cognitive and social factors.The chapters are organized by topic with a lot of graphs and research info. to back it up.The only negative I have is that there is a lot of research data in the text which can get make reading all of it a little boring. ... Be aware of duplicate material
This book is an entertaining read but there are large chunks of word by word identical passages with his other book "The Joy of Not Working". One book is a good read, reading both feels repetitive. Since this is the newer of the two, its the one I would recommend.

Tough language but few verifiable facts
In a world desperate for health solutions, the uneducated masses flock to purported cures and aids that havenot met the tests of either scientific or medical validity.Alkaline water is one of those potholes that the unsuspecting customer encounters.
Great review of the science behind alkaline diets
This was one of the first books I picked up after reading Dr. Young's "The pH Miracle", which had left me with more questions than answers.

A wealth of facts and figures for retirement wannabes
In the growing field of books offering suggested places to live or retire, RETIREMENT PLACES RATED is one of the few to base its findings entirely on statistics rather than opinion. David Savageau, the author, has authored prior editions of this book as well as the popular PLACES RATED ALMANAC.Feeding into the statistics here come metrics on each of 203 locations from six specific areas:Ambiance (by which the author means largely historic charm and outdoor recreation), Costs of Living, Climate, Personal Safety, Services (availability of medical services, for example) and The Economy.We're also given a useful Appendix with Chamber of Commerce addresses, income-tax information, and the like.

Stirring Art
Etta Clark scores with Growing Old is Not For Sissies II.Her book is filled with beautiful photography and a second look at some of the subjects from her first book.With frank honesty, she captures the essence of her subjects once again.An excellent book of art for any fan of photography.

A Must for Anyone Working in Gerontology
This book is a must for anyone who works with older adults.It is a photographic essay of some very special people....people who embrace the robustness of life, and who are disciplined to maintain their capabilities as long as possible.Our world is steeped in ageism, that is, believing that older people are only capable of doing things that are "appropriate" for their age.This book shatters those beliefs and provides living examples of people who continue doing what they love to do physically.I wish that Etta Clark would revise this book with a new set of photos every year!I have seen some of these photos over and over again in lectures that people give about aging.It is a book to be owned, not borrowed.

So inspiring, I think I'll run a marathon!
Just one look at the photos and all your excuses for being a couch potatogo out the door.This book is filled with inspirational photos of seniorathletes.Helen Zechmeister, age 91, works out 3 days a week, deadlifts200 pounds and can do the full splits.A competitive swimmer, MarieWilcox-Little at 73 has a much better figure than I could ever hope to have(I'm merely 30).My favorite: Ivor Welch,(Volume 1)was never active until83 when his wife his wife passed away.To mourn her death he startedwalking, then running, then running marathons.By the age of 90 he ranfive marathons and 2 half marathons!If Ivor can do it, by golly, so canI!A must have for anyone who wants to enjoy life to its fullest! ... Peek-A-Boo...I See You
I remember when I first got into spirituality and metaphysics, I was so naive about certain things. I really thought that once a person begins to practice their True Self...their Inner Spirit...when they remember that they were a Soul with a body and not a body with a Soul...than they were automatically free from all things human; they were impervious to any thing from the sniffles to cancer to death. But the thing is, that no matter how "advanced" we are on the Spiritual Path, and I use that word with some hesitation, because there is no advancing on the Spiritual Path, we are already as Spiritual as we are ever going to be, the bottom line is that we are still in the world of form. This is where the words of Jesus ring so clear, "Be in the world, but not of it..." Well worth reading
The author of the bestseller Reviving Ophelia this times takes us on a journey through the lives of our elders. Following the lead of Bernice Neugarten at the University of Chicago, she distinguishes between the "young-old" and the "old-old". This book focuses mainly on the later, telling the stories of people who are coping with loss and illness.
Another Country:Navigating the Emotional Terrain of Our Elders
This book is written in a readable style that holds your interest.I bought it to help understand my elderly father who is suffering from dementia, but I found it told me a lot about myself and what I will want and need in the next 20 years.Mary Pipher's insightful and easy to understand.

Another country: the tourist perspective
Not being "old-old" myself, with both parents dead, I picked up this book out of curiosity.Piper does not mince words. She says at the outset, "Old age is not for sissies," and she goes on to describe life as an old person in a country designed for the young.It's an apt metaphor: the old learn a new language and a new terrain.Read more

Wise advise
The two chapters in this book that I appreciated the most were Chapter 8 Mentoring: Seeding the Future with Wisdom where on reads that modern day families all to often turn to some 'professional' when it comes to issues involving our families, and these 'experts' don't even have to have kids or even be close to their own families. Its the sheep skin with some Latin on it that makes them more knowledgeable than our own elders.
A path to follow for older age
From Age-Ing to Sage-Ing has been a personal inspiration for me. Being recently retired, it has shown me that it's important to take all of the knowledge and wisdom that I have gained and give it back to the younger generation. If all of us healthy elders volunteered some of our wisdom in the workforce, our Social Security crisis would be greatly diminished. This is a wonderfully timely book with an important message.

Since there's no option to give half stars, I opted to give Ernie the benefit of the doubt and go up one star.
The True Test of Character- Live Free or Die!
The essence of this book is attitude adjustment. Most people tune out when they hear "attitude adjustment" because of the way that it usually misused in North American society. It is usually misused by managers that want you to accept a rotten situation and "adjust" to being an obedient and cheerful slave. When Zelinski uses it, he means that you need to realise that the situation is rotten and that you need to free your mind- and realise that there are options and you don't have to be a slave. It is all about realising that wage slavery isn't the norm, nor the only option. In fact, I realised that I probably would go farther than the author when it comes to taking chances. He states that short of certain death you should take the leap- I have come to believe that you cannot even take death into account. You need to say, live or die, I'm going to live free.
Good on yer, Ernie!
Some books you lend to others;this one you don't. Keep it on your shelf as a ready antidote to what many of us chose as a normal lifestyle. Too much work, too much TV, too little exercise, too much junk. About 25 years ago, physical education students in an Australian university were warned to prepare for the future when people would have almost too much leisure time. Oops, what happened? Consumerism and "habitually striving for more and bigger stuff". On average, our standard of living is triple that of 1950 ... are we happy yet?

Old People?
The term "old people" is offensive to me, and this book is full of the term. The authors cite themselves so frequently that the validity of the content is questionable.

Excellent for use as textbook
Schaie and Willis provide a wonderfully rich, interdisciplinary overview of adult development and aging. Each chapter is chock full of information on the biological, psychological and physical effects of aging from young adulthood onward. Interesting statistics (that are updated for new editions) and tables are also included. I had to purchase the book for an undergraduate class on adult development; it was a great primer for understanding the changes we undergo as we age.

Excellent primer on the topic
This book covers, in very good depth, the life cycle from youth through old age.Backed up by plenty of research and statistics, the look is more of one of cold hard fact than of heart, but this is helpful for those justentering gerontology.I was given this text by my supervisor upon entryinto a senior residential facility, and I felt I certainly gained from it. excellent book on the experience of retirement.... i only wish i had read it before i took early retirment from college teaching.... makes me feel a lot saner reading the interviews in this book!

Need livelier experiences
As a career consultant and former academic, I am a great admirer of Robert Weiss. I continue to recommend Learning From Strangers to students who want to learn qualitative research. And I am of an age when retirement can be a realistic option for the current or near future.

The Mature Mind
As a retired Social Worker (81), and having about 25 years in the field of Gerontology, I was first intrigued by a review of the central thesisof this book, "The Myth of the Mid-Life Crisis," in the January 16,2006 issue of NEWSWEEK.The book met my expectations, so have given it as a gift to each of our 3 middle-age children.This book is well written, well organized, and has fulfilled its promise to expand our knowlege of adulthood(Eric Erickson.)I highly recommend it, especially for that cohort of people who are facing early lay-offs, and feeling very insecure about "what do I do now?"It may give many a new feeling of confidence about thier future.I've actually lived the experiences described in the book.

The Mature Brain: Where Wonder Never Ceases
This book is a historical marker in the rapidly growing field of cognitive development. Standing on the shoulders of Piaget and Erickson, and even Freud, Dr. Cohen creates four distinct yet integrated stages for the mature mind. Together they prove that the difference between adolescence and retirement (like heaven and hell) is about half an inch.

I am 47 years old and saw Dr Cohen on the "The Today Show". I was so comforted to know that all the maladies that accompanying the aging brain don't have to be. We've been brainwashed by government controlled media. As long as we take the necessary nutrients FOR THE BRAIN and keep active we have not much to fear. My genuis- level mother died at age 77. First the dementia and then the Alzheimer's. She wasn't taking proper nutrients, drank well-water, was on antidepressants, loved toxic beef liver that stank when she cooked it and cooked with aluminum. She didn't know all this good information. Vision for the Future
This book outlines ways in which current society neglects and relegates elders so that they become invisible at a time when they have something special to offer the larger culture. The author challenges the reader to think creatively about how care for elders can be provided in a more dignified way. I highly recommend this provocative book for anyone interested in changing the way society views aging, abilities and wisdom.

I loved this book.
This book was recommended to me by the local County Commissioner of Senior Services.As a nurse and caregiver for my mother, I had not been exposed to some of the ideas that Dr. Thomas discusses. The book has taught me to look at aging from many different perspectives. One thought that is discussed is how we are an anti-aging society as evidenced by the fact that we are not running down to the drug store to buy wrinkle cream!
