Editorial Review

"Tending a garden isn't so different from raising children. Plants like to grow when you spend time with them. Don't keep the whole crop for yourself. There are always people who don't know how to make things grow, and they probably need your tomatoes more than anybody else." --Giuseppe Maestriami, age 85.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A thoughtful, pleasant read
I too enjoyed this book immensely. If you are looking for the answer to life or a big philosophical revelation-you probably won't find it here though. The tales are short, simple and very reflective of the life of regular folks and the things they have faced. I thought it also gave a very good look atolder"folks". So many times they are relegated to having no particular importance or nothing to say inin today's busy world of the young. Here folks talk of sorrow, triumph, love, joy and regret -the emotions that span a lifetime.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you don't like it now, you will once you are older
I think those who gave this book a poor review did not give it a deep enough reading to see depth in this book. What's worth knowing addresses mundane topics, but that is the point. Some people go through life looking for what isn't there, missing out on what is. Those same people finding something missing in the book. This book won't tell you the cosmic answers for how to live your life. It will show you that there aren't any cosmic answers, just simple ones, and different ones for different folks. And the book shows that elders are just folks, regular folk in older bodies. This book is a valiant effort to combat ageism.

2-0 out of 5 stars Just Because They're Old, Doesn't Make Them Insightful
The book is a bunch of snippets from older people. I did not find most of the snippets to be particularly profound or insightful. It is a short read (1 or 2 hours max) so it may be worth it to some people but not for me. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A new cultural war for the 21st Century
Gullete's observation that "We are aged more by culture than by chromosomes" piqued my curiosity enough to buy the book...and then WOW!When I started to read it I couldn't put it down. It is scholarly, informative and clearly articulates the reality and pernicious nature of what our culture does to "aging"....and what we do to ourselves by buying into this cultural ideology. This is not a book for whiners or the feint of heart as Gullette gives us ample material and rational for challenging and changing the way we all view aging...which wecan do and absolutely must do. I'm starting with a positive attitude right now!I recommend it for anyone who intends to remain a productive member of society in all stages of their life. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Forgetting Is the Worst Part...
This is evidence that some people can overcome the impossible. The dreaded calamity of not being able to remember in one of its worst forms hit Christin Boden at the age of 46 when she was diagnosed with progressive Althemizer's disease.Of course, she was hit hard and set out to learn all she could about this debilitating disease. The main thing is that she did not just crawl in a corner and give up.After all, she had three children to care for, so she became an advocate for people with dementia.
4-0 out of 5 stars Living With Dimentia:My Story of Living Positively with Dementia

5-0 out of 5 stars A true gem: An informative and cautionary tale
Sure, this is a "how to" book on how to protect your aging parents' best interests. You will find that this book contains plenty of information about parasitic forces, and how to combat them. And sure, this is a book about one man's struggle against his father's corrupt home health care provider. But this book is much more than these two things. It is a powerful and true cautionary tale, and good literature in its own right. The strong-willed and loving author was determined to look out for his aging parent's best interests.Throughout the story, he bravely struggles with the indifference, incompetence, dishonesty and greed that infect in the legal, financial, medical and caretaking worlds. Our hero wants you to be armed in ways that help you avoid his nightmare. My kind of book....If you are a savvy, tough-minded person, then use this remarkable book to keep your sanity and prepare for the battles ahead. You are right to be so determined about things, even if those you care about don't get it. If you are one of those people who blindly assumes that hired financial advisors, caretakers, doctors, nurses, mental health professionals and others will be caring, trustworthy and thorough in all instances, then you need a book like this one.If somebody gave you this book to combat your Pollyanna and naivete, then quit complaining. Shut up and read.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fast-paced, Compelling, and Educational
I found "Is Your Parent in Good Hands?" to be extremely well written and a compelling story of one man's struggle to protect his aging father from elder abuse.Mr. Carnot's personal story was riveting. And I learned a wealth of information, including Medicare and health insurance considerations, tips on finding a caregiver for a senior citizen, and suggestions on how to help elderly people remain happy and active during their golden years.5-0 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down!
Edward J. Carnot's book, Is your parent in good hands? is riveting. Once I picked it up I couldn't put it down which is something that is more usual for suspense novels than for works of non-fiction. Using the story of what happened to his father as a framework, Mr. Carnot mixes suspense with solid information that will be helpful to anyone responsible for elderly relatives, whether they live nearby or across the country.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Gerontologic Nursing 3rd ed. by Sue E. Meiner and Annette G. Lueckenotte (Eds).
Sue E, Meiner is a nurse practitioner in private practice and has taught nursing. Annette G. Lueckenotte is a gerontologic clinical nurse specialist. There are 22 contributing authors. Only one was apparently a contributing author to the last edition. The contributing authors for the previous two editions are listed.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference for use with nursing the elderly

4-0 out of 5 stars Way over 50!
I couldn't give this book 5 stars because, although it looks like a great book in and of itself, it should be titled, "Fitness Over 65" since most of the quotes, stories and photos are of people well over the age of 50, and more like over 65. Keep in mind if you are 52, like me, that with very little current exercise you might be better physically fit and beyond the simple exercises in this book. It's VERY basic. But if you haven't done anything beyond sitting on your couch munching chips and watching the tube your whole life, this book would be a perfect way to break into beginning to get fit.
5-0 out of 5 stars Safe, Reliable Fitness Instruction
This book is a good edition to your fitness library. A safe, effective and easy to follow program.Get this book instead of the numerous other books out there promising to help you stop aging and stay young forever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Let's Get Moving!
I strongly feel the need to get moving and this book has the exercises geared for mature adults. After hearing scary stories about osteoporosis and heart problems, I recognize that much of our problems stem from inactivity and sedentary lifestyle. The choice is mine and this book can help me make the change.

Editorial Review

The greatest demographic event to happen this century was the baby boom. From 1946 to 1965, 76 million live births were recorded in the United States alone, a phenomenon that's been responsible for everything from the surge in baby-food products in the '50s and early '60s to the roaring stock market of today, fueled in part by boomers investing for retirement. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Numbers Tell All -- International Bankruptcy
Pete Peterson has written several books on the looming bankruptcy of the Social Security system. In this book, he covers the G-7 nations, which are in worse shape than the United States is.2-0 out of 5 stars Not-so-great a book but for other reasons....
This isn't an exceptionally good book for a number of reasons that aren't really being euclidated in the other reviews. 1-0 out of 5 stars This Book Is Silly, Superficial, & Politically-Motivated!
This book is chock-full of speciousnonsense, employingsuperficial and misleading use of statistics,worst-case scenarios, and outright horror stories more designed to frighten and divide different elements of the American electorate for crass conservative political purposes than it is an objective and useful text about the subject at hand. What neo-conservative apologist Mr. Pete Petersen and the think-tank (isn't that an absolute oxymoron?) he's associated with doesn't want you to know is that our heroes in the U.S. Congress have been systematically frittering away the 'surplus' money all we aging soon-to-be-seniors have been contributing since the late 1960s in order to hide their own profligate and irresponsible spending agendas like STAR WARS and the new missile defense system that can't tell a warhead from a drone.
