5-0 out of 5 stars A Most Kind and Insightful Gesture of Help
"Let Evening Come", was loaned to me by an 83 year old friend. I am 52.The truths in this book are insightful and comforting. Mary Morrison is an honest, compassionate and generous writer. I read the book once and then returned it to my friend. I am ordering my own copy. "Let Evening Come" is a gift for any age; it is about life and living in grace. The reader learns a great deal from this book and is reminded of the place in the heart where age, if we are lucky, awaits us all.
5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book on a subject which many find difficult
I loved this book, it is readable, genuine and beautiful. It has helped me to look forward to old age.I want to give it to an elderly relative who is visually impaired but sadly it is not done on tape - Any plans?

5-0 out of 5 stars a wonderful roadmap through aging
For a person who has aging parents and who is beginning to age herself, "Let Evening Come" provided insightful, compassionate, thought-provoking, and funny glimpses into the journey. There were times Inodded with recognition at the first hints of my own journey. The bookdoesn't overwhelm you -- it simply accompanies you, without platitudes, without saccharine, but with tenderness. ... A serious subject presented in a humorous manner.Easily read, hilarious and thought provoking. It will keep you in 'stitches'. M.Phyllis HIll

5-0 out of 5 stars Wise, Useful, and Entertaining
While this is not a mega-sized collection of quotes (just one quote per page) it IS an amazing selection of time-tested wisdom, humor, and experience.I collect quotations; and this book was an outstanding resource from that standpoint, since the preponderant majority of the quotes were "keepers."I have collected 20,000+ in a personal database over more than a decade (an odd hobby, some would say, but I guess I'm pretty easily amused). While a few of the quotes familiar to me, most were fresh and original, and the preponderant majority were "keepers."But you don't have to be a quotation collector to enjoy this book; if you're looking for inspiration, "words to live by," (from folks who have "been there, done that"), or if you just enjoy reading books that give you something to think about and more than a few chuckles along the way, I believe you will thoroughly enjoy it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Words of Wisdom from People Who Have Lived
Every quote listed in this book comes from people who were over 70 years old at the time, so they know of whence they speak. This is a light read, but a truly enjoyable one. Turn to any page, and read sagacious advice on a variety of subjects, from well-known figures ranging from Julia Child to Golda Meir, and everywhere in between. This is a book that will be returned to again and again for its wit and wisdom. And, as we age, the words become more true to life. Age does not necessarily equal wisdom, but in the case of this collection, it certainly applies. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Design Principles For Senior Living
The author gives advice on designing and furnishing a smart aging home, providing room-by-room analyses, checklists, and recommendations for resources. She addresses specific physical conditions and considers 'the healing bedroom' as a means to setting up a home hospital. And she covers 'the caring community', outlining the local support systems available for the onset of health and disability issues. (I found the reference to 'motion seating' and the company that makes it to be worth the price of the book alone.) Having seen my father through his last years, I already had an appreciation of the need for things as basic as proper seating and an accessible bathroom. The author's experience with her mother's Alzheimer's disease gave me even more to think about. This book appears to be going out of print which is unfortunate because it is quite practical. Buy it while you can.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fine book
Briefly, a fine book to sensitize one to issues of design as they apply to older persons.Although much of this book pertains to new constructions, I used it to sensitize me to issues that were also relevant to retrofit--such as putting up railings, etc., in an existing house. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Face to Face
I had just signed up for long-term nursing care insurance, a very expensive commitment. I had a number of books I had been waiting to read, and I picked up OLD FRIENDS, thinking I would read a piece of nostalgia.
5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST IS YET TO COME......

5-0 out of 5 stars Kidder offers some perspective on our lives...
This is a beautifully meandering story of two nursing home residents, their year spent in a growing friendship within the walls of "Linda Manor."And it's more than that--In this story, Tracy Kidder involves a whole cast of residents, interacting in ways that paint a more creatively human picture of a nursing home than most would imagine is the case. They make up a community in and of themselves, even planning and taking part in a play put on for other residents, staff, & families. It's a place of friendships, laughs, worries, dread concerns, but mostly of friendships and the efforts of the elderly characters in reaching out to their fellow residents during the last chapters of their lives. I appreciated the realism Kidder offers in this book, clearly based on his own one-year experience at the actual "Linda Manor" in Massachusetts. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Being 60 Is Grand!
Sixty once sounded so old, so staid, so quiet, so settled. As I approached my own 60th birthday, these adjectives didn't seem relevant. Thanks to Wendy Reid Crisp's latest book, a collection of thoughts from women from across the globe, I am reassured that I am not alone. Forget the old-lady shoes, the rocking chair, staying at home -- being 60 means being relaxed about who you are, knowing how to accept what you must, and setting whatever goals and objectives you wish. Making new friends, traveling to new places, learning new things -- those of us in our 60s can and will do that (and much much more) as the writers in this book show us with humor and warmth. This delightful book is the perfect gift -- for oneself or a friend of any age.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE gift for any woman in or approaching her 60s!
Wendy Reid Crisp's little gem seems to touch on every aspect of aging as a woman in our culture and our times. She has created a collection that manages to be at once philosophical and irreverent, lighthearted and sober, thoughtful and hilarious. It addresses our fears, our victories, our passions, and our every mood. This book is an inspiration and reminds us that our generation is now reinventing aging.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sensual, sure-souled, serene, spectacular and soaring....

5-0 out of 5 stars Just the message we need
The aging of America is upon us.Boomers will start turning 60 on January 1, 2006.
5-0 out of 5 stars It's about time!
Freedman is a refreshing voice who puts a welcome human face on the aging of our society--a topic most often dealt with through dire statistical predictions and paranoia. Prime Time illustrates that, while the demographic revolution is real, a negative whammy on America doesn't have to be the result. The profiles of everyday heroes reveal the classic American values of ingenuity and social concern applied through a new generation of retirement-age people. The perspective on the formation of the notion of "golden years" is informative. The succinct reporting of theprevailing social value attached to older Americans from the Puritan era (revered sources of wisdom) to more recent decades (keepers of leisure time) is important. And the telling of the selling of Sun City is a hoot--an "only in America" tale that provides lots of context for understanding society's ambivalence and confusion in dealing with the opportunity and challenges inherent in an aging population. This is a good book for anyone interested in new visions for an older country.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gold watch = golden opportunity
Marc Freedman hits the nail on the head in this book: the coming wave of retiring boomers represents an asset unlike any other, with the potential to transform the American economic and social landscape in ways we have yet to even consider. In the same way this generation revolutionized youth, politics, civil rights, women at work, childrearing, and every other issue with which it came in contact, so too will boomers revolutionize what America thinks about in terms of retirement.Freedman rightly notes that if their energy can be harnessed and directed to solving the country's social ills, the boomers stand poised to accomplish what no one else could.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best on the subject of aging well....
Was perplexed by a negative review of this book, so I wanted to find out, firsthand what the author really said and I am so glad I did. Nowhere does the author chastises older people who try to take care of their health. Just the opposite.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Creative Age: Awakening Human Potential in the Second Half of Life
This "easy-read" book offers both professional and lay people alike a very refreshing and encouraging perspective on maturity. When coupled with a gentle sense of spirituality and wisdom which comes from life experience, it should help the reader to establish and reinforce a sense of purpose and resilience that engenders hope and creativity unimagined by most youth. This book is to become a part of my professional counseling practice for senior patients to read and discuss as they search for a deeper meaning and ultimate purpose in their lives. In a sense, I anticipate it will help to set the stage for welcoming passions of an existential nature, heretofore unknown in many individual's lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars A gift to midlifers!
If ever there was any question about our ability to make meaningful contributions at midlife, this book will dispell all doubt! I found the continual notes (on the outer edges of the pages) encouraging, as they documented the multiple contributions made by individuals of "advanced" years. This is absolutely exciting, and gives me hope for the future! ... Read more
