5-0 out of 5 stars Practical andScholarly Look at Assisted Living Design
Assisted living is a relatively new branch of eldercare, designed to meet the needs of a rapidly growing segment of the elder population. Many seniors wish to maintain their independence, but may need varying amounts of help with daily living activities. Assisted living residences are multiplying across the country to meet this demand. But assisted living facilities are still evolving and refining themselves--there is no accepted "standard" design for such living arrangements.

5-0 out of 5 stars working with toxic older adults
This book is wonderful!!!!!!! It was as if Davenport knew my mother when she wrote this book.I am very happy that I got to read this book.It has made me very aware of my own toxicity. I now know there is some hope for me to change.Oh my God I am very luck to have been able to read this book ...

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read--So Helpful!
Real solutions and insightful advice for dealing with difficult elders. Dysfunctional families struggle with these individuals for a lifetime, now they can learn how to manage them. Another excellent book on this subject, written with a humorous slant is "Elder Rage."

4-0 out of 5 stars You'll know if this is someone you love!
When I saw the title I knew it applied to my life and my relationship with my elderly mother. As I turned each page I had the vague sense that someone had been eavedropping during the time she was living in our household. "Toxic" described her interaction with everyone who cared about her. This book preserved my mental health! It contains clear descriptions of the toxic personality and gives guidelines for dealing with people who have this world view. If you are struggling with a difficult sibling, spouse, or parent, read this book. Protect yourself from this condition. ... Read more

Editorial Review

When Jimmy Carter left the White House in 1981, he and his wife, Rosalynn, had to face the same questions many elder Americans encounter when retirement approaches: "How could we accommodate the unpleasant circumstances that had been forced on us? What were our assets and abilities? What were the dependable factors in a good life, and how could we recognize and develop them? Was it at all possible for us to be as satisfied in the future as we had been during some of our most interesting, adventurous, and successful times? Did we have anything much to offer in the years ahead?" In the years since, both Carters have become internationally recognized for their work as authors, teachers, and humanitarians, but as Carter amiably insists in Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars How to enjoy being an old kokker
Simple, plain, clear good advice enlived by personal example and story. This is agood book about aging wisely, retaining one's powers as best as one can through the senior years. Former President Carter involuntarily forced to retire at fifty- six faced a double - crisis , identity and financial. He almost lost the family land and farm, but was savedwhen his peanut holdings were bought by a large consortium. He and his wife Rosalyn became active in new ways, as university teachers, writers, volunteer builders of one home for a needy person each year.
4-0 out of 5 stars Another thought provoking book by Jimmy Carter
THE VIRTUES OF AGING by Jimmy Carter
1-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps he's aged too long
Jimmy Carter used to be my favorite ex-president. Now, it seems he has aged beyond the point at which he can reason clearly. He goes on Larry King to criticize a former colleague (Zell Miller) for standing in support of the President, AND writes a book, for which he will probably make millions of dollars, to do more of the same. He is using his roles as elder statesman (well-deserved) and Nobel Laureate (well-deserved) to undermine our country; but seems to have forgotten that he was impotent while our hostages were held in Iran for 444 days. You know the saying: "them what can't do, teach". If one of the virtues of aging is exploitation of public opinion for your own advantage (or that of your party), Jimmy Carter is VERY virtuous. ... This primer is the best starting point for anyone interested in getting a quick yet broad picture of cognitive aging. It seems to have been written with the academic reader in mind, but is accessible enough for a popular press audience (especially the first section Basic Mecanisms).

5-0 out of 5 stars Eldercare from the Heart
What an eye opener!Through this book, Stella Henry holds the hand of the reader and says, "I've been there, what you feel is normal, you can do this, and here's how."Gently, she explains the joys, challenges and pitfalls of caring for the elderly. She unfolds the changing relationships between parent and child and illuminates shifting sibling roles.Perhaps most importantly, she tells the caregiver (usually a wife, daughter, or daughter-in-law) when it may no longer be safe to care for a loved one at home--when creating a hospital at home still cannot give a loved one the care he or she needs. At the same time, she warns that not all nursing homes and assisted living facilities are created equal and that we need to become sophisticated, knowledgeable consumers in order to choose an appropriate care center. The Eldercare Handbook answered questions before I even thought of them.I have already given this book to six friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT DETAILED HANDBOOK ON CURRENT AND FUTURE ELDERCARE PROBLEMS
Five "Well-Prepared" Stars. No, make that Six Stars!! This book belongs on the shelf or a CD disc of any family with elderly parents, relatives, or friends. Or those approaching elderly status. The Eldercare Handbook arrives just as we are informed there are over 22.4 million households caring for elderly relatives or friends, with that number expected to explode as the 'boomers' begin living longer than previous groups. That's ONE IN FOUR households and that's why this book needs to be read now by everyone and kept on the shelf or on digital media for future use. We're all on the clock.

4-0 out of 5 stars On Women Turning 60byCathleen Rountree
I loved this book! It was an inspiring addition to Cathleen Rountree's series of "On Women Turning..." books - my favorite so far.The diverse group of women selected included some of my personal (s)heros - Marion Woodman and Jane Goodall - as well as a number of women I did notknow of, but was pleased to be introduced to. The women's stories, theauthor's questions and commentary all interweave seemlessly. The photosare fabulous as well - capturing something of the essence of each woman. The topic of aging is handled honestly and openly, and I am left with avastly different perspective than the negative view of aging most common inour society.

2-0 out of 5 stars An O.K. book for reading about privileged people aging.
I was disappointed in this book.It detailed the thoughts of women turning 60 who had many advantages in life, in terms of education, family help and encouragement, the luck to connect with the right mentor at the right time.I would have been much more interested in the thoughts of less privileged women, more ordinary women.I couldn't help thinking that it may be easier to have a positive view of aging if you are already a woman of accomplishment by the time you hit your forties. For some, the greatest accomplishement of their lives may be successfully raising a family, completing an advanced education later in life or simply a life devoted to volunteerism. I'd be interested in their thoughts. That's what I thought I was getting, at least in part.A nice mixture of women from different socio-economic groups would have been most welcome. ... Read more
