5-0 out of 5 stars like life- bits and pieces
This is a fascinating combination of two aged giants in developmental theory, Joan and Erik Erikson, together (as is fitting with the aged authors) a geronotologist. Like old age, it is a combination of memories of more solid, middle aged times and theories, and loose ends of currentlife. The stories from Berkeley seniors seems to be planted with a history- much like our lives as old people are current harvest of today and much filled memories. I found it surprizing thatlike my old life, new accomodations are found. In particular, the number of people interacting with dead spouses I found a welcome secret.

2-0 out of 5 stars Technically Lacking
The book doesn't deliver on presenting a computer application system forevaluating performance.Ittakes the CCRC's accredition questions andjust expands on them. From the information that was presented I not sure ifthe authors know what an application system is.In any event the booklacks any hard technical information, or performance standards, that can beused for evaluating and designing a project. It's presentation is more likea general business plan from a recent MBA graduate. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a superb text for all helping professionals.
I used an earlier edition of this text during my own doctoral training. That it has been revised and updated speaks to its excellence as a comprehensive text covering all aspects of aging and mental health. I willbe using this text in my counseling classes because it is chock full ofuseful information, (practical, medical, and psychological,) and emphasizes" the dignity and worth of each individual irrespective of age."Professional counselors, psychologists, and all those who work with agingadults need to read this book and keep it as a ready reference. As thepopulation ages we need to understand the special needs and attributes ofolder adults, as well as how aging is viewed in a diverse society. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn Where Our Beliefs on Aging Originated...
Cole provides a rich study of the culture of aging in America.Exhaustively researched, The Journey of Life is a must for gerontologists, policymakers, medical professionals, and anyone who is interested in a deeper understanding of why we believe what we do about aging in America, factors influencing these beliefs, and how they have developed over time. Its academic tone can make for a dry read early on, but overall, very well written and intriguing.

5-0 out of 5 stars How we see death, the aged and agingchanges historically
If you're scared of what awaits you as you age in this country where thefrail elderly are too often warehoused in short-staffed, soullessinstitutions andby and large exiled from the mainstream of our society nomatter where or how they happen to live, you will probably find hope inthis book, which shows by historical example that we change. The Journey ofLife : A Cultural History of Aging in America is awell written vista ofAmerican social perceptions. Tom Cole writes as if he is fascinated by thepanorama of his research into how Americans have seen the elderly andaging. He shows us the views we have moved through in strategic detail, notoverwhelming us with statistics or boring us with long, dull paragraphs ofpsycho-social explanations, but carefully exposing the layers of Americanbelief, fear, hope, and socio-economic reality from which have arisen ourviews of death, aging, and the aged from the early days through thepresent. From vile, malevolent curmudgeons on their way to the dark pit ofannihilation to sweet, harmless fools shuffling through zippedy-doo-dalandscapes toward automaticacceptance into a radiant heaven, to thepresent, where we simply seem to lose our faces in the rush ofhyper-productivity and adoration of the sexy young, the American view ofthe aged and aging constantly changes, reflecting the dominant perceptionsof our society. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A fine guide for re-writing the story of elder health care.
Peake is commended for openly and honestly addressing the currentcondition of health care for the aged. " Healthy Aging, HealthyTreatment " is an excellent addition to the library of those whoprovide health care services to the aged.Troughout this text Peakepresents a non-treatening yet effective means by which to address theprimary goal of psychotherapy; re-writing core beliefs. The current storyof health care for the "third age" is repleat with frighteningimages as well as themes of ignorance, denial, neglect and fear.Perhapswe can use Peake's final chapter as an outline by which to re-write thismystery into a story that more accurately reflects our innate care, concernand compassion for one another. ...
