A Tour d'Horizon of the UN's Successes and Failures
In 1945, in San Francisco, when the UN Charter was written, the victors of the Second World War were looking to create an international body that would guarantee global security and prevent another conflagration like the one they had just experienced.The lines from the Tennyson poem "Locksley Hall:" "Till the war-drum throbbed no longer, and the battle flags were furl'd / In the Parliament of Man, Federation of the World" were carried by President Truman in his back pocket when he gave his famous address calling for a United Nations.
Balanced assessment of the UN
There is not much new in this book for those who follow the UN, but it is a balanced assessment. His reform recommendations err on the conservative side, although he does show how the US Congress imposes limits on the organization and then blames it for not doing more. The book is intended for a general readership rather than scholars or those with an in-depth knowledge of the UN.

Moving forward, looking back
Analyzing almost sixty years of United Nations history is, to say the least, an ambitious undertaking. Kennedy has tackled the challenge admirably producing a substantive and very readable account of the "evolution of the many UNs since 1945".His previous participation in the review and reform process of the UN system adds to his qualifications.This study is an excellent entry for anybody interested in learning more about this unique institution, its origins, growth and progress into one of the most complex international organizations.

American Government
This book gives a clear,factual overview of the governmental system and institutions in the US. Very helpful especially for foreigners and beginners who want to know more about how the US governmental system works.

Good basic review of American government
I read this book for the CLEP test but I also supplemented it with a college textbook.I wouldn't recommend someone take the CLEP after reading just this book, it is just too basic.Read this book and supplement itwith a textbook for key areas and you'll easily pass the test.

Good Introduction to Strauss
The Zuckerts do a good job of giving a fairly comprehensive introduction to Strauss's complex and wide ranging thought. A notable and distinguishing feature from other recent books on Strauss is their historical analysis of the causes for the recent attention given to Strauss in some popular media outlets. The Zuckerts show, by means of actual quotation of the sources (a novel idea for some of the media which have made inaccurate pronouncements on Strauss's thought), that the flurry was spawned by a combination of LaRouchite propoganda and the bad and misleading scholarship of Shadia Drury. Also noteworthy for those a bit more familiar with Strauss is a history of the division of "Straussianism" into East coast and West coast Straussians (the Zuckerts describe themselves as "Midwest" Straussians) and a very thoughtful and penetrating analysis of Strauss's theory and use of esotericism. The book itself also stands as an outstanding example of Straussian scholarship by giving a first-hand illustration of Strauss's method of close reading. Along with the recent offerings of Pangle, Smith, Sorensen and Meier, the work shows just how inadequate and misleading the media treatment of Strauss has been.

Nothing Subtracts like Division . . .

Jim Geraghty: one of the more sensible National Review writers
A number of writers at the National Review foolishly believe that it might be good if the Republican Party is rebuked in the November elections.Thankfully, Jim Geraghty has his head screwed on tight.The author clearly understands that the Democrats cannot be trusted with national defense issues.We are at war with Islamic nihilism and this struggle cannot be won if terrorism is considered merely a nuisance to be handled by our local police departments.No, the terrorists must be either killed or imprisoned.A middle ground solution is not viable.
Outstanding!
Geraghty has written the must-read book of the political season. It portends that even in the face of crappy poll numbers and an occassionally ill-focused agenda, Republicans are likely to continue their string of electoral successes in large measure because voters don't trust the Democrats and the American left to successfully prosecute the War on Terror.

Excellent look at the development of the House
A few months ago, I read The Most Exclusive Club, Lewis Gould's history of the modern U.S. Senate.When I saw that a book about the House of Representatives was coming out, I knew that it would be a good companion piece to Gould's book.Then I saw it was by Robert Remini, the fabulous biographer of Andrew Jackson, Henry Clay and Daniel Webster and knew that this book was a must-read.And though Remini has expanded beyond the Jacksonian era he has specialized in, he has still written a great book.
A good narrative but lacking in some respects

Haven't read it, but heard an interview with the author.
I haven't read this book yet, but I heard an interview with the author last night on NPR.In that light, I can't comment on the book or it's proposals, but I can say that the author sounded very knowledgeable and his arguments well thought out and supported.I am in the middle of the road politically, and the author is clearly a passionalte liberal, but the book sounds as if it would be an interesting look into the next presidential election for people on both sides of the political spectrum. ... No ordinary nightmare, just current reality!
This book is a dousing of icy liquid that will wake-up many a sleep at the wheel. One only needs to glean a wee-bit-of truth from its well written pages. Overall it's crisp, clear, and hard-hitting. . . in a twisted sort of way. I had a hard time putting "Hope of the Wicked" down.I found myself drawn at all hours of the night reading it's pages, inspite of the revelations. Have you wondered how the plans of the global elite will affect you and your family? See what the role of endless war and chaos will play in ushering a New World Order. What is the power behind the CFR, TC and FEMA? Find out how the Constitution and national sovereignty are regularly being subverted. (Do a search for Executive Orders) What is the Federal Reserve and who owns it? Is our education system playing a wicked role to destroy our Nation? Find out this and more. Is there really a conspiracy to rule the world? Unfortunately, the pieces of the puzzle fall neatly into place as you read the plethora of history and the well-documented, horrifying quotes. Although published in 2000, you will see the impact of the Internationalists, up to that point in time. Much has happened since then and the hour is late. Well Documented, Dated, Overly Long, and Yet Worthwhile
Ted Flynn's "Hope of the Wicked" is one of the most often cited works in the genre of conspiritorial history.Long had I considered ordering and reading it and long had I avoided so doing.It seemed to me that there was so much emphasis on the United Nations, an organization which seems to be more irrevelant as time goes on, as to make the whole less than worthy of the time necessary to read a book of such length.Finally, I was moved to order, if only because it is a title also carried by "Catholic Treasures", a largely undiscovered source of awesome wisdom and truth.

Interesting, but lacking
I was very much looking forward to reading this book.But I must say that from the first chapter I was disappointted with the writing.The book reads like a string of unrelated newspaper articles or diary entries.There is no underling arc that ties all of the little stories together.
The best book on the Supreme Court out there.
This may possibly be the best book ever written in regards to the US Supreme Court.Opening with the end of the Warren Court, Woodward and Armstrong go on to describe the Burger Court from 1969-1975.Talking at length about Abortion, the Nixon case, and the Death Penalty, as well as giving great insight into the minds of the 9 men who interpret the nation's constitution.An amazing book, everyone should read it.

A Classic History of the Burger Court
I have just re-read this book, which I first enjoyed while I was taking Con Law in law school in the late 1970s.It is a little dated, but still a fun and well-written insider's story of the workings of the U.S. Supreme Court.Woodward and Armstrong write with an "inside the beltway" politically-correct perspective which may seem a little dated today.That's one feature that stands out.When it was originally released, Jimmy Carter was just being elected President, and the Congress was 2/3 Democratic.The political battlegrounds have changed in a generation.However, judicially, not as much as you might expect.Many key issues - abortion, free expression, and the role and limits of government, e.g., - continued through Rehnquist's term as Chief and still face the Roberts court.While today's Court line-up is more conservative, the process of internal court politics is certainly similar, so this book remains useful in attempting to understand both the history of the Court when it issued so many of those decisions that still drive politicians mad today, and how the often convoluted opinions on divisive issues are formed.

Government is cool!
This book is very helpful and in good shape. Nothing is missing, but you can tell it has been used.

Gotta love Big Ed
Ed Sidlow is one of our foremost minds in American Government today.I have had the pleasure of having both him and Dr. Henschen as instructors, and believe you me, if you could talk to Dr. Sidlow for 10 minuets about Robert Byrd, you would be in stiches!

Good intro text
North Dakota State Univ uses this in its intro to American Gov't course. It is an easily readable text that covers everything that a government text should. Lots of links to the Internet are included as well, and the info is very up-to-date. Covers impeachment and everything else. I'll bet that the next edition includes the whole 2000 election fiasco. I only noticed one error, but that's probably due to the fact that I live in the state referenced. ... Read more

high school level textbook
I suppose nobody is going to buy this book unless they have to, so there is not much point to reviewing it.My girlfriend took the course. I looked at the book and was disappointed.Paralegal classes are generally at least junior college level.Except for the cases, statutes, etc., the book is on a high school civics textbook level, sort of patronizing, as if the author expected junior college students to be dumb.It's superficial, not particularly informative, and on some points, inaccurate. I'm not impressed.

A Former Student Speaks
I read this book for a class I took from Joanne Hames, one of the authors, at the paralegal program I attend.I found the book very well- organized and practical.The subject matter not only covers all the basics, but italso equips the paralegal to succeed in today's high-tech law office. Also, the "Ethical Choices" and "Paralegals on the Job"sections in each chapter make the book quite dynamic.The authors of thisbook are experienced attorneys who know the law and are abreast ofeverything relevant to the modern paralegal.

All introductory books should be like this.
Both informative (covering the "high points" or notable and interesting aspects of law) and well-written so you can read it straight through and get a lot out of it.The best starting point I have seen forbeginning to learn about law. ... Read more

One of the biggest misconceptions people have about marketing is that it is synonymous with advertising or selling.That is like saying cooking is synonymous with plating your dish.Yes, it is a part of the subject, an important part, but it is only a small portion of the entire matter of the subject.Marketing, as all business students soon learn, is the whole of deciding what products to make (taking into consideration all factors related to the marketplace success of those products), how to position them, how to sell them, their "life", brand, communications, programs, and so much more.It is a big and complex subject than many happily devote a life to practicing and others a lifetime to researching.

An indispensible manual for social change today
This book, full of anecdotes from successful community organizations, is chockful of helpful advice, whether you're part of an organization seeking social change, or you are an individual interested in how people are effecting change in today's political climate.The worksheets on campaign planning and the chapter on media are particularly helpful.I highly recommend it.

Why you no longer need ABC News
I recieved this book from my father because I certainly would never have bought it myself.The premise of the book falls flat on it face with some simple fact checking.The premise being that politics and political coverage is freak show that is solely dominated by the Drudge report.He devotes a whole chapter as to how the freak show destroyed Al Gore - except Gore managed to win the popular vote.And if you give any credence to the continuing revelations of massive voting irregularities in the past two presidential elections (not covered by ABC, because Mr. Dudge said nothing about this) his whole theory goes out the window.

Hurried, unorganized, and to general.
Perhaps I wanted the wrong thing out of this book.I was hoping for some probing assertions and introspection about the role of the media, its relationship with the public and the government, and its future.There was some of that, but it was incoherent and tied more to specific examples than to an overarching idea.
OK, not great
The highlight of this book are the anecdotes that Ms. Thomas relates.Most of the book is a series of essays about what is wrong with journalism today, with White House press relations and certain presidents and other government officials past and present.Other than the anecdotes and some interesting history there is little that is not intuitive.I agree with a lot of what Ms. Thomas writes, I just don't find it very original or new or presented in a new/unique manner.Save your money and borrow it from a library as I'm not sure I spent my money well in buying this book.FWIW, it is well written and is a fast not-long read.

Linnell submit asinineravings about politics, but do not review the text at hand.One wonders if they even read the book or (as is the habit of most alleged "conservatives") passed a knee-jerk judgment without the benefit of seeking any information on the subject being judged. ... I am more than a little surprised by the previous review and feel compelled to add my 2 cents.I have found Robert Guyer's book essential to my own lobbying efforts.Certain aspects of the lobby game may remain outside one's control (the money tossed around by opponents, the strength of a particular constituency), but this does not negate the importance of Guyer's book -- a richly informative guide that transforms the art of lobbying into more of a science, providing insight into the elements crucial to any successful lobbying venture.After reading it (and taking Guyer's course), I was much clearer on what I needed to do to hit a home run. ...
