5-0 out of 5 stars Information that gun owners really need to know
This book has all the gun laws word-for-word and in plain English too.5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute must for Arizona gun owners; plain English.
Alan Korwin has done a great job of summarizing the legalese in Arizonalaws pertaining to guns and their utilization in this state. In clear andconcise English, he explores the ins and outs of gun ownership, legalself-defense with a gun, carry restrictions, concealed-carry licensing, andlegal definitions. Illustrated with cartoons to help you remember viavisualization. Can you carry a concealed weapon with a license to do so ina restaurant? Check the book, and it tells you under what circumstancesit's legal. What are the requirements to be issued a concealed carrylicense? Check the book. In short, it's an indispensible bible to be sureyou walk the line responsibly with a firearm in Arizona. Ignorance of lawis no excuse, and although Arizona is one of the most "firearmsfriendly" states in the union, there are pitfalls for the uninformed. This book covers them well and thoroughly. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Unbalanced Little Pamphlet
This pamphlet makes up with fire-n-brimstone passion what it lacks in cogent arguments. If you're already a gun-nut, this piece will give you some one-liners to use in chat room debates. If you're undecided on the issue of handgun regulation and looking for thoughtful arguments, it won't be your best source. It's not balanced, and it doesn't pretend to be, but it's pretty entertaining.Crime statistics are fumbled, court decisions are misinterpreted, history is wrapped around the axle. You get a sense of the author's agenda from the subtitle:"What the American aristocracy (sic) Doesn't Want You To Know".It comes across as one of those militia tracts downloaded from wacky websites -- everything is a conspiracy. The government, academics, newspapers, business owners, everyone is involved in some murky plot (with motives unexplained) to deny the author and his sympathizers what they believe is a constitutional right (and he even asserts as a "natural right") to own firearms. Lots of kooky fantasies are stuffed into the poor overburdened twenty-seven words of the Second Amendment. The world is full of Elite Rulers and Oligarchs and whatnot.Unsourced, poorly edited (there is a strange recurring fetish to put certain words "in quotations" for no clear reason, such as "the people", "scholars", and "court decisions"), and internally contradictory in its arguments (should we look to the text of the constitution for our guidance or to supporting materials or to interpretive court cases?Well, it depends on which one supports the author's views the best).Guaranteed to raise a smile.

4-0 out of 5 stars Historical references supporting gun ownership
If you wanted to REALLY know what the Founding Fathers thought about guns, this is the place to look.References go as far back as Norse law, and are built upon through English Common Law and end up being fully codified in the Second Amendment to the US Constitution.3-0 out of 5 stars Decent

5-0 out of 5 stars Blown Away will blow you away
Caitlin Kelly is a gifted writer. I have read many of her articles and news stories in such newspapers and publications as, The New York Times, the New York Post, Chatelaine and the Wall Street Journal. Buy this book and you will get an unbiased view of every woman's right to bear arms -- if she so chooses. This book is a "must-read" for everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars A different prespective on gun ownership
I very much enjoyed this book.I found the balance refreshing. I also greatly appreciated the different perspectives on gun ownership the book brought out. These are things I wouldn't have been exposed to otherwise.

5-0 out of 5 stars Blown away by Blown Away
I challenged myself to read a book about a subject I'm not comfortable with and then couldn't put it down. What a great Journalist and Storyteller Ms. Kelly turned out to be. I particularly enjoyed reading the history of women and guns in America. It gave me much food for thought. I highly recommend it for everyone on either side of this issue. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't Go Far Enough...
While I really like this book and feel it explains well, I did need to mark it down a bit since I don't think that it emphasizes enough how kids should not pretend to use guns or stay away from them. The fact that this is only addressed on one page, versus the several pages of how a gun works, was disappointing.I'm not reading this to my sons so they know the difference between guns & how they work... and to get them excited about the concept of how a bullet can travel to the end of the block before they'd even take a step in a race... I'd rather find a book that will supplement the safety training we try to give our children about staying away from guns... not pretending to shoot people... etc...

5-0 out of 5 stars Good teaching tool for elementary school-aged children...
As a Mass. State/NRA Firearms Instructor, I am always on the look out for books that I can recommend to my students. This book does a nice job of explaining in simple terms the operation and dangers of Firearms and ammunition. It also contrasts the difference between TV, pretend play, and real life. This book is well illustrated and is politically neutral. This a good book for parents that would like to discuss the subject of firearms with their children but don't really know where to begin.I would also recommend pairing it with a book by Massad Ayoob called Gun Proof Your Children / The Handgun Primer.

I have read this book to my primary grade students since it was published. It presents facts about gun safety clearly, without taking sides. It is amazing how many discussions it provokes from the students. It is a great starting place for teaching safety, particularly gun safety, to young students. It should be a "must have" in any elementary school media center. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fianally the truth about 2nd Amendment history.
Shooting Straight is a fantastic book about guns in America. It corrects all of the intentional errors put forth by the liberal media in this country and gives you the facts, both statistically and from a historical perspective.Wayne LaPierre is currently the head of the NRA, yet you don't get a feel for biased perspectives or crazy rants, distorted facts that are common in other left-wing media based text. The author simply states facts, both statistical and hisorical concerning gun ownership, right to carry laws and the second amendment. This book correctly summarizes what the founding fathers intended through the second amendment and he proves this by citing indisputable examples of their quotations and writings through the federalist papers.
5-0 out of 5 stars Arthur Hayhoe is a Deceitful Gun Owner
This book is fantastic and you cannot argue with facts, unless of course your name is Arthur Hayhoe. This is a gentleman who carries and conceals his own weapon, be aware of that when listening to his anti-second amendment rhetoric. He is deceitful and elitist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally the truth about guns
It is unfortunate how many people think they know something about guns, however, they have absolutely no idea (never owned one, never viewed children in the field with their parents enjoying the outdoors, etc...).The media tries so hard to brain wash the ignorant and weak to believe guns are bad.Guns have been a positive part of our heritage from the beginning (parents and children, friends, individuals and their dogs, etc...) and this book shows the TRUE story from people who know something about guns and not those misinformed people who get their information strictly from the media. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Breakthrough Book
David Hemenway is a scholar who has written the "Bible" for gun safety. If we lived in a modern day utopia, his suggestions would be embraced by our society without question.Advocates for gun safety will find reinforcement for their beliefs through the author's statistics and those who might be detractors should read the book and see the logic to Hemenway's practical solutions to the gun violence epidemic in our country.

1-0 out of 5 stars Flawed premise, false conclusion
The Amazon book description discloses everything a prospective reader need know about the book, and why it is be a waste of time to read, and a waste of money to buy.The book's title denotes "private guns."If a police officer lawfully shoots and kills a criminal, the criminal is just as dead. The fact that the gun is wielded by an agent of the state makes that death more palatable to those opposed to "private guns."The description then states that "guns are used to kill almost ninety people" every day. While this statistic is undoubtedly overblown ("nearly?") and a distortion, it ignores the circumstances in which guns are used.If a gun is used in self-defense, or in the defense of another who is subject to an unprovoked attack, and the gun stops that attack, it has functioned as designed.5-0 out of 5 stars A must read

5-0 out of 5 stars Integrity in Research
The work presented in this book stands as a shining example of how social science research should be conducted. The authors' ability to set aside their preconceptions regarding gun control establishes their qualifications as preeminent researchers in the field and true professionals (as though this was necessary).Contemporary social science research is too often lacking in integrity;thankfully, these practitioners have made a contribution to the truth rather than some political ideology. The work cannot be classified as conservative or liberal.Rather, it represents a full and exhaustive exploration of the dynamics associated with the gun control debate as it is framed today. True students of the field should be grateful.

5-0 out of 5 stars By far the most in-depth study criminal gun habits.
Interviewing felony prisoners in ten state correctional systems in 1981, Wright and Rossi found extensive information suggesting that gun control laws have relatively little effect on violent criminals. For example, only 12% of criminals, and only 7% of the criminals specializing in handgun crime, had acquired their last crime handgun at a gun store. Of those, about a quarter had stolen the gun from a store; a large number of the rest, Wright and Rossi suggested, had probably procured the gun through a legal surrogate buyer, such as a girlfriend with a clean record. Fifty-six percent of the prisoners said that a criminal would not attack a potential victim who was known to be armed. Seventy-four percent agreed with the statement that "One reason burglars avoid houses where people are at home is that they fear being shot during the crime." Thirty-nine percent of the felons had personally decided not to commit a crime because they thought the victim might have a gun, and eight percent said the experience had occurred "many times." Criminals in states with higher civilian gun ownership rates worried the most about armed victims. Despite the popular myth that criminals preferred small, inexpensive handguns (so-called "Saturday Night Specials" or "junk guns"), the felony prisoners preferred larger, more powerful handguns-equal to the guns which they expected the police would have. Although the criminals rarely bought guns in gun stores, the overwhelming majority stated that obtaining a gun after their release from prison would be a simple project, which might take a few hours to a few weeks. Armed and Dangerous has lost none of its importance. In the years since it was published, no-one has done any research on criminal gun use and acquisition that is even half as significant or detailed. Armed and Dangerous is also a great book to give a library. The new paperback includes an introduction by Jim Wright that discusses the reaction to Armed and Dangerous in the years since its first publication.

5-0 out of 5 stars A thorough analysis of sociological research about guns.
Intending to build the case for comprehensive federal gun restrictions, the Carter administration handed out a major gun control research grant to sociology Professor James D. Wright, and his colleagues Peter Rossi and Kathleen Daly. Wright was already on record as favoring much stricter controls, and he and his colleagues were recognized as among sociology's brightest stars. Rossi, a University of Massachusetts professor, would later become President of the American Sociology Association. Wright, who formerly served as Director of the Social and Demographic Research Institute at the University of Massachusetts, now teaches at Tulane. Daly was a relatively young scholar at the time, but she has since gone on to win the Hindelang Prize from the American Society of Criminology. The Hindelang Prize is awarded for the most significant contribution to criminology in a three-year period. Daly is the most recent winner, for her studies of women's issues. Anyway, Wright, Rossi, and Daly were asked to survey thestate of research regarding the efficacy of gun control, presumably to show that gun control worked, and America needed more of it. But when Wright, Rossi, and Daly produced their report for the National Institute of Justice, they delivered a document quite different from the one they had expected to write. Carefully reviewing all existing research to date, the three scholars found no persuasive scholarly evidence that America's 20,000 gun control laws had reduced criminal violence. For example, the federal Gun Control Act of 1968, which banned most interstate gun sales, had no discernible impact on the criminal acquisition of guns from other states. Washington, D.C.'s 1977 ban on the ownership of handguns which had not already been registered in the District was not linked to any reduction in gun crime in the District. Even Detroit's law providing mandatory sentences for felonies committed with a gun was found to have no effect on gun crime patterns, in part because judges would often reduce the sentence for the underlying offense in order to balance out the mandatory two-year extra sentence for use of a gun. The Wright/Rossi/Daly team exploded scores of other gun control myths. They discussed the data showing that gun owners-rather then being a violent, aberrant group of nuts-were at least as psychologically stable and morally sound as the rest of the population. Polls claiming to show that a large majority of the population favored "more gun control" were debunked as being the product of biased questions, and of the fact that most people have no idea how strict gun laws already are. As the scholars frankly admitted, they had started out their research as gun control advocates, and had been forced to change their minds by a careful review of the evidence. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book full of useful information
Boston, Mr. Royce, is entertaining and informative.I have this book and the follow on volume, and both are excellent. His views are field tested, and perhaps best of all, he admits his prejudices, says why he thinks what he thinks and then leaves it to the reader to make the decision for her/him self.A true libertarian. He talks the talk, but also walks the walk.I had the privilege of meeting him at a show once and he impresses me as a man you could leave your teenage daughter or your wallet with him and they would absolutely be safe upon your return. This personal integrity shows in his writing style and approach to life.Hooray for this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Choosing the weapon, training the user
Boston's on Guns and courage is well written. Many quotations from John Ross' book Unintended Consequences, as well as from patriots going back to the revolution of 1776, frame a nice discussion of the authors thesis, namely that the second amendment is the final guardian of the rest of theconstitution. I myself think that constitutional rights are like muscles. They get flabby and weak if not used.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars More than Gun Control
I picked up this book to provide some insight on gun control issues and history, and was very pleased to learn more than expected. The laws and history were very well documented, and the book was sequenced in a manner that allowed the reader to absorb information without being overwhelmed.Cultural and legal discussions abound, and were a very important supplement to the core of the discussion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scholastic Common Sense
In reading the book with an open mind, it becomes quite apparent that history and culture goes hand in hand when dealing with the issue of gun control. What may work in other countries probably would not work in the United States and visa-versa due to those two issues.Clearly the United States is a country where Americans have a love affair with their car and firearms and Americans will refuse to part with either of the two.Kopels solution to gun related crimes makes sense, since guns aren't going away because of its proliferation, then issue concealed carry licenses to Americans since the Second Amendment is clear that Americans have the right to keep and bear arms.

Kopel histories of the governments in Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica, Japan, Switzerland and the US.Concurrent with the history/culture review he mirrors the weapons control laws that evolved andtheir consequences.By looking more in depth at the context within whicheach of these countries enacted their controls, Kopel looks for"lessons learned."His work is mostly objective, incrediblywell-documented, and reaches some pretty common sense conclusions.Anexcellent resource for learning about the nature of government, laws, andgun control specifically. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Don't believe the reviews by gun wacko's, this is a great book
I doubt any of the unfavorable reviewers read more than the excerpts provided on Amazon.Coming from a long line of hunters and sportmen, I cannot buy into this nra foolishness. This is a very well done book which takes a facts-based approach to the overwhelming control the NRA and the gun lobby have on our government. The authors have had a wealth of experience coming up against the money, power, and ignorance which defines the gun lobby. It is well written and a real eye opener for those who want an unpropagandized look at this disgraceful national public health issue.

1-0 out of 5 stars Advocacy, not facts
Granted, this is a book written from a point of view, but the lack of intellectual honesty displayed within is sufficient justification to look elsewhere for understanding.

1-0 out of 5 stars Fuzzy Thinking and Whining Predominate
The authors start out the first chapter by explaining in detail exactly how sleazy and scummy the principal players on the "anti-gun" side are. Most of these lawyers would have to get an integrity transplant just to work their way up to scumballs. They are professional ambulance chasers, in the words of the authors!! Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Scholarly Research on Gun Control
Kleck is a professor at Florida State University, Kates is a partner of a national law firm. The 'Introduction' says they want to present the findings from scholarly journals to contradict the propaganda in the corporate media (p.14). Concealed handgun carry resulted in a reduction of violent crimes (p.17). This fact is censored from the corporate media, even though thousands of lives could be saved. The corporate media portrays gun owners as subhumans, but exempts the Rockefellers, the DuPonts, and the publisher of the 'New York Times' (p.18). This is just bigotry. The availability of guns does not cause murders; murderers mostly have criminal records (p.21). Most murders are drug-related. Gun Prohibition only disarms honest people, just as locks only bar honest people. Historians and scholars say the Second Amendment is an individual right, and this was well recognized prior to World War II.
5-0 out of 5 stars My New Bible
I'm a gun owner and a gun rights advocate.I'm very fair-minded, consequently I've always wondered if my interest in gun ownership led me to be biased against gun control advocacy (i.e. "I like 'em, they don't.Therefore, they must be wrong.").Now that I've read "Armed" I no longer have any doubts that I've made the right choice on this topic.I found myself getting very angry with the medical society and the media while reading this book.5-0 out of 5 stars And the truth shall set you free
I would recommend this book to anyone who is willing to question their beliefs, anyone who cares about our society, and anyone who believes in the importance of empirical study over irrational dogma.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Facts & Figures...hold the "Fluff"...!
I am not a member of the NRA (yet), but after reading this book, I am leaning to joining. This makes a powerful case FOR gun ownership.
5-0 out of 5 stars BASIC, UNBIASED FACTS ON FIREARMS OWNERSHIP!
The hysterical leftists who are so easily recruited into supporting the anti-gun campaign are deluded. This book contains the facts on the issue, truths that I knew already before I read it.The right to own firearms...IS NOT A LEFT VERSUS RIGHT ISSUE, as many leftist want to believe. Consider these points:
4-0 out of 5 stars Facts on Gun Control
This 1994 book explores the controversy of "gun control" (really Gun Prohibition) by presenting facts to use against the arguments made for gun control. Does the spiraling crime rate result from private gun ownership? The reality is that areas with the least private gun ownership have the most crime and murders (Washington DC, New York city, Detroit Mich). The corporate controlled media simply lie, or tell half-truths, to promote the interests of the economic aristocrats who own them. You can read other books on this subject, like William Weir's "A Well-Regulated Militia: the Battle Over Gun Control".

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent study of the failure of Gun Control
For anyone who is interested in the subject of gun control I heartily recommend "Guns and Violence: The English Experience" by Joyce Lee Malcolm. It is a scholarly and, to my American ears, dispassionate and comprehensive examination of the history and effects of English gun control efforts throughout the the centuries. In so doing, the authoress is not afraid to puncture many myths.
4-0 out of 5 stars Malcolm Presents The Real History of Gun Control in England
In a nutshell:
4-0 out of 5 stars The other shoe drops
As some one who has lived in NYC for 12 years, and just returned from a year in England, I was astonished by how much more violent crime exists in that seemingly placid country. As Professor Joyce Malcom describes, robbery, burglary, assault and motor vehical theft in England have risen far higer (per 1000 population) than in the United States since the mid 1990s.This in spite of the fact that to minimize this shocking increase in violent crime, the British government has re-ordered the way crime statistics are collected.Car thefts are no longer investigated by Police; you call them to report a theft; they give you a report number for the insurance company. (A man called the police to report he was witnessing his car being stolen, and if they hurried over, they could catch the theft. They were "too busy.")Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must reading for everyone; mostly the anti-gun crowd.
This book should be must reading for the anti-gun crowd, although they won't read it.It is too slanted toward the truth; it discusses the pros and cons of the gun control debate--to the detriment of both sides, but more slanted toward the free guns side (although he does advocate some gun controls). The major arguement against the book from the anti-gun folks is that he points out, in a clear and succint manner, why most gun controls won't work; mostly the arguement usually heard that criminals simply won't abide by any law, no matter how well-intentioned.There's also the issue of loopholes, which he holds up for all to see. However, he does argue for closing gun shows (or at least extending the Brady Bill to cover them)...and then points out how even this won't help as people intent on obtaining guns can easily get them from people who want to sell them.Usually private parties.
2-0 out of 5 stars A Rehash Of The Known
The author does hit on many of the common arguments both for and against gun control issues and attempts to clarify both sides positions but in doing so he fails to answer the title question of the book. In contrast to the closing statement in the book description; "Casting aside ideology and abstractions, he cautions against the belief that there exists some gun control solution which, had we the political will to seize it, would substantially reduce violent crime.", the author suggests that several gun-controls be enacted while acknowledging that there is little if any evidence that the controls would have any effect at all.
