Putting human faces on the great gun control debate
This biographical reference book on "the key figures in the gun control debate today" delivers arguments and counterarguments on the meaning of the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, Americans' right to keep and bear arms. This book puts human faces on the argumentation. The figures featured in the reference book came from different backgrounds and disciplines, law, medicine, academics, law enforcement and plain mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, etc. who have become, because of their own experience, activists in the great debate. Ms. Bijlefeld has dealt adeptly and in a neutral manner with this debate, a debate on which the contestants often argue hotly and emotionally. She should be applauded for her efforts, for this book belongs in the hands of all of those involved in the debate, as well as politicians, teachers, journalists, and in all of the public libraries, as an invaluable source of reference. Neither pro- nor anti-gun control

Informative and Interesting
This well-written, easily accessible book takes the reader on a historical journey through the basis for the Second Amendment, establishing the reasoning of the Founding Fathers for including the Second Amendment in the Bill of Rights. From the ancient Greek and Roman philosophers and statesmen to the European tradition, theSecond Amendment Primer will eliminate any doubt in your mind that the Second Amendment is a necessary clause protecting citizens not only from criminals and foriegn invasion, but from the government itself, should the need ever arise.
Objective & Unbiased
This book is outstanding. I really appreciate the unbiased and objective content that the author has written. All too often, books on this subject are biased and lack solid facts. Also, the book is easy to read, as the author placed side notes in the margins describing the subject matter as well as highlighting points. Only a rightwing lunatic would hate this book
The truth is our society feeds into the so-called need for guns for everything. It is no wonder we're actually losing the real war on terrorism and further undermining national security. The people who hate this book seem to find it ok to read and listen to gun toting rightwing propaganda all the time. Yes, my state is a gun toting state but that doesn't mean that none of these people want a little safety once in a while. Gun control and gun violence are two different issues altogether despite the NRA's and the rightwing attempts to lump them together. Read this book and remember this quote from Atticus Finch of "To Kill a Mockingbird":
Don't take the word of a crackpot, read the book yourself
I am the author of the New England Journal of Medicine review to which Dr. van der Linden so strongly objects.I doubt that Dr. van der Linden ever read the book, and he certainly did not carefully read my review.The review was not effusively praiseful of Gun Violence, and it noted some reasons for skepticism about the book's major conclusions.However, I believe that it introduces a worthwhile framework for thinking about firearm violence, and it is worth reading even if you disagree with it.

Firearms and Violence is a collection of 17 articles by America's leading academics with expertise in firearms policy. Subjects include technical analysis of crime statistics, history of the right to bear arms in America and England, scrutiny of all those anti-gun Gallup polls, and much more. An outstanding book. Brain dead
The author dredges-up every old, discredited shriek about guns. The author clearly believes that guns contain evil spirits that leap out, take possession of the owner, and turn him/her into a drooling mass murderer. A badly organized argument
The subject of firearms is a controversial one and articles arguing for and against all too often drown the reader in the authors' biases and emotions. To his credit, the author has tried to be impartial and objective(but not quite succeeding). There are a lot of facts and figures here butthey are badly organized and the conclusions and arguments don't seem totake into account the increasing lawlessness of society today. Much data but difficult to read and unreferenced.
J. Murray includes a lot of data and anecdotes, but little references forhis work.Good reading for "preaching to the choir", but lackssubstance for any rational discussion.Also, the reading is very confusingand difficult to follow his points. ... Read more
