1-0 out of 5 stars Deeply Problematic Scholarship
I was excited to read this book, as I have a degree in criminology from a British university and currently research firearms in the U.S.I was very disappointed. While this book has interesting points about perceptions ofcrime, the American political process, and the troubling state of criminaljustice, its research methods and analytic conclusions are deeply flawed. Windlesham critiques American crime policy and law using examples of crimesin Britain, as if Britain and the U.S. could and should be compared withouthestitation. He critiques NRA statements and policy recommendations asmisguided ideology, but uses Handgun Control Inc.'s writings as if it wasscholarship. He barely refers to any concrete criminological studies onfirearms, prefering to use medical studies on guns, which most sociologistsand criminologists have illustrated are often deeply methodologicallyflawed. He does not use the solid scholarship on guns in the U.S. writtenby well-known criminologists, even when that research would reinforce hisoverall points. Lastly, he glosses over research on the Second Amendmentand its supposed impediment to gun control, using partisan writings andvery little work from legitimate lawyers and historians.Overall, thisbook was a serious disappointment. For much better research in a similarvein, try books by Franklin Zimring, Gary Kleck, or Jan Dizard et al.'sbook "Guns in America."Though very different, these works arehonest attempts to understand complicated issues. Windlesham's book is not.

5-0 out of 5 stars A brilliant attack on the US Justice System
Lord Windlesham is an english conservative who was horrified by the United States Crime Control Act of 1994.He argues with compeling logic that the trends in criminal legislation in the United States is for large numbers oflow level offenders to be locked up at enormous public expense for no goodreason.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars a smorgasbord of essays
I don't have a lot to say about this book, but since no other ordinary purchaser has reviewed it here, I thought it better to throw in a few comments than to leave you, the potential buyer, with no guidancewhatsoever. First of all, this is a collection of over 40 essays bythat many different authors. Some are clearly for more gun control, someare firmly against, and some writers focus instead on what the gun issuesays about our culture, generally. Some of the works are very scholarly, like a shortened version of a master's thesis--chock full of historicaldetail and deep analysis. Some of these deep writings do not lendthemselves to casual pleasure reading. Some essays go in the otherdirection, giving you plenty of passionate rhetoric but few factual detailsto support the writer's position. All in all, this collection of 43essays by some of the biggest names in the gun control debate today is veryuseful for almost anyone. I would not say that it's a "must-have" for someone who has read several other books aboutgun control, because you've probably seen most of these ideas before.Butfor someone familiar with the gun control issue who does not already have alibrary full of books on the subject, this is one you should get.You willfind yourself refering to it over and over again. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Nice piece of scholarly work.
On the whole, the work was put together nicely.Although the two editors acknowledge for purposes of full disclosure their preferences towards a certain degree of gun control, they take care to differentiate betweentheir scholarly work and their personal opinions. They present a number ofwell-balanced essays covering gun control and gun politics. For thoseseeking pro-gun or anti-gun propaganda to fit preconceived notions towardsthis policy arena, I suggest you find other material.Books from WayneLaPierre or Sarah Brady would suffice for those purposes. However, thisbook is perfect for a researched and documented study of a full array ofperspectives on gun control and gun policy.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This book is well written, exact and "tells it like it is."The book's content is developed by an author who has years of police experience.I truly enjoyed reading the book, which I might mention, was cover to cover in one afternoon.I highly recommend "Concealed Handgun Carry," by Steven L. Argiriou.

1-0 out of 5 stars There are better books out there.
From start to finish this book presents a laundry list of the author's opinions, which are largely unsupported by facts. His arguments are poorly constructed and the book's basic grammar is likewise poor. Altogether, theeffort makes one doubt whether the information presented is reliable enoughfor carry concealed. I'm sure there are much better concealed carry booksavailable. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Discussions on Gun Prohibition
The 13 chapters and Appendix provide concise coverage on this topic. The right to keep and bear arms is a definition of democracy (Aristotle, Cicero, Machiavelli, James Madison). English Common Law regarded keeping arms as a human right. Against that human right were most despots and their apologists (Plato, Garry Wills). America's right to keep and bear arms goes back to the 17th century. The Bill of Rights was to guarantee the rights of the people against an oppressive state. Late in the 19th century as the corporate aristocracy gained power they sought to limit people's rights. First they attacked the "well-regulated militia" from 1877 to 1919. Then they started on "the right to keep and bear arms" from 1934 onwards. The militia was composed of all male citizens was replaced with a "select militia". This battle goes on today (Chapter I).

5-0 out of 5 stars A welcome affirmation for female gun owners
This very readable book is both informative and interesting.Brief presentations of a more scholarly nature (e.g. examinations of statistics on crime and gun ownership, debates over the advertising techniques of gun manufacturers, law enforcement policies) are interwoven with the personal accounts of a variety of gun women, including police officers, hunters and competitive shooters.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars more fiction than fact
A book can be entertaining without being factual. While some might consider this an entertaining book to read, it is based only on newspaper accounts. No interviews were actually conducted for the writing of this book, although Mr. Horner might make it appear so. Mr. Horner admits in his book that he took his accounts from newspapers, he also admits the newspapers were against concealed carry. This should make the reader suspicious right there. Basically, I thought it was a lazy, sloppy work. There are too many inaccuracies in it, maybe if it were under fiction? A really good work on the subject would have an audience. Book was a disappointment.

1-0 out of 5 stars Historical Accuracy Is A Must-But It's Not Found Here
As the lead lobbyist for nine of the thirteen years it took to pass the License to Carry law in Missouri, I was excited when this book came out.

The Opposing Viewpoints series is a good series for students and others who are working on some of the hot button issues of today. Each volume contains essays and articles that explore the issues thoroughly from several different angles.Sometimes there are two clear sides, but sometimes it is a bit more nuanced.

3-0 out of 5 stars Trying to get at the truth, but where's the references?
I recently found myself in a gun control debate on co.general. Wishing to back myself up with facts, I started to delve into the books and journals dedicated to this only-slightly-less-hot-than-abortion debate. Josh Sugarmann's book isn't exactly useful as a debate tool for either side of the gun control debate, because he's as damning of the organized gun control organizations as he is of the NRA and the gun lobby (which Sugarmann shows to be virtually synonymous). Sugarmann, who himself is a gun control advocate with the Violence Policy Center, thinks that "the truth lies somewhere in the middle" of the debate, and that the average American should beware of the fanatics on both sides who misuse and misconstrue the evidence of violence in our society for their own agendas. He does this by giving us the history of the National Rifle Association, which is also the history of gun control in America, and shows how the organization has shifted over the years from a sporting idea to "Second Amendment fundamentalism" that characterizes it today. Along the way he visits the topics of whether or not the Second Amendment does indeed guarantee the right for an individual to bear arms, what the real problem of firearms in society is, and the lies told by both the NRA and Handgun Control, Inc. Sugarmann's book is easily read, and damn near necessary reading for anyone who is a member of the NRA. However, I fear that any true "Second Amendment fundamentalist" will be put off by Sugarmann's book, because he often doesn't provide the necessary references for his supposedly objective statements of statistics. Which is too bad, because his book has the potential of getting at the truth in the middle.

1-0 out of 5 stars Sugarman, professional liar
Josh Sugarman makes his living by deceiving peoplewho know little or nothing about firearms. He tries to win with false rhetoric an argument he can never win based on facts. This book made me almostphysically ill.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Real Low-Down on the NRA!
Sugarman's book provides an excellent history of an organization that annually bilks millions of dollars from America's gun owners -- the National Rifle Association. 40,000 Americans die every year from gunshots and Sugarman uncovers the organization that helps to perpetuate the slaughter! ...
