5-0 out of 5 stars Stopping Power--a political concept
This book has been quoted in many places including Congressional hearings, federal appellate-court briefs, the Internet, and other publications including national magazines and Washington think-tank white-papers. It's wonderful to have at your fingertips so much information covering so many aspects of firearms ownership, self defense, and gun-control laws.2-0 out of 5 stars A Rehash of Old Grudges
It's difficult to understand the enthusiasm other reviewers feel for this book. While I am a staunch advocate of Second Amendment rights, "Stopping Power" adds little to the debate. The book contains very little material written orginally for this edition; rather, it's a compilation of various unpleasant e-mail threads and letters to the editor. It seriously aggravated me to have paid for a book containing verbatim transcripts of junk I could have read for free on the Internet. Mr. Schulman is bright and makes some strong arguments, but overall the work is shoddy -- petulant, unscholarly, and devoid of editing.5-0 out of 5 stars It will absolutely disarm the "gun-grabbers!"
I have studiedwritings and listened tomany arguments on the Second Amendment, its true meaning and intent by our constitutional framers. This book is the best collection of "fact-based" pro-gun arguements that will convince the most staunch gun-control advocate of the dangers in that folly. It is a must read for those seeking the truth about our Second Amendment and the true reason thereof.Mr. Schulman's style of writing, his sincerity and belief in freedom lends itself to a truly great read. If you want to inform your anti-gun friends of the true dangers of "gun control", THIS BOOK IS A MUST! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Gun Control Movement Review
In recent years Twayne Publishers has done a fine service for the study of social movements through a series of now twenty-five short studies. These have included such movements as the American Peace Movement, theAntinuclear Movement and the Creationist Movement. While varying inanalytical content, they have provided an unusually valuable basis fordescribing and thinking about the variety of objects contained in the term"Social Movements." Gregg Lee Carter, Professor of Sociologyat Bryant College, has added another highly useful volume to that series. Carter's emphasis is largely on two gun control organizations, HandgunControl, Inc. (HLC) and the counterorganization, the National RifleAssociation (NRA).Carter also analyses some of the issues and thinkingabout guns in the U.S., such as their relation to violence, the impedimentto gun control in theSecond Amendment, and what he describes as the"myth of the frontier legacy."Carter opens with a chapteron the relation of violence to guns and finds the data research ambiguous. In concluding the chapter he poses what he calls the central question forthe rest of the book: "why the gun control movement has seen so littlesuccess. Why does the United States lack strict national gun controllaws?"Much of the remainder of the book attempts to answer thisquestion by closer analysis of the two organizations: the HLC and the NRA.Carter's analysis of the Second Amendment and the alleged role of afrontier legacy convinces him that these often cited explanations havelittle factual basis; yet the limited victories of the gun control movementand the successful opposition of the NRA remains a problem. The question isdeepened by his analysis of polls.Large majorities support controlmeasures although their intensity and commitment may not be deep. Theauthor emphasizes that while the public appears supportive of gun control, they did not approve of banning guns. This reluctance, as he describes it,has been a defining issue in the gun control movement. From its formationin 1974, the HLC has broken with prior organizations that had advocatedbanning guns.In 1977 a "palace coup" in the NRA transformedthat organization from being a spokesman for hunters and rifle users. Prior to that it was unopposed to controls, a sharp contrast to its presentfierce antipathy toward all such efforts.Since 1977, it has been highlysuccessful in preventing national legislation for controls. While the HLC,on the other hand, has had some successes, such as the Brady bill, in themain it has not achieved most of its goals. Carter also reviews anumber of polls concerned with the sources of gun control support andopposition. While he points to sources of financial support and lobbyingactivities of the NRA he has no clear analysis of why the organization hasbeen so overwhelmingly opposed to any gun control measures, why itsmembership is so intense in their support and why legislators are soreadily influenced by them.Perhaps there is no ready answer, but toattempt one is essential to more effective analysis.Other lobbying groupshave not had intense support like that of the NRA.Perhaps the virtue ofshortness is also the vice of limiting analysis. It is fate ofstudying ongoing movements to be overtaken by events after being written. Currently the movement is seeking its goals on local playing fields and inthe courts.Nevertheless the author's historical and sociological datamake it a necessary study for social movement analysis and for thoseconcerned with the issues of guns and their control in America.5-0 out of 5 stars This book greatly helps one to understand gun control issues

1-0 out of 5 stars Radical Left-Wing Extremist reading
This book is based on emotion, not logic. The main point that the book makes: average everyday people should have their guns conficated by the federal govenment and that would make armed violent criminals 'feel sorry' for the disarmed public and would stop praying on them.Ridiculous.

1-0 out of 5 stars A liberal's point of view.
Same old arguments that liberals have been making for years.Gun Control = Disarm honest law-abiding citizens and hope that violent criminals will have mercy on the public. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Author Tom Diaz makes no bones about his animus toward guns: he wants to regulate the U.S. firearms industry to death--literally. Guns are responsible for about 36,000 deaths each year in the United States (more than half are suicides), and so Diaz views them as a public health hazard requiring a massive government intervention. 1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money
Tom Diaz does the anti-gun-rights movement no favors with this shallow, biased diatribe against the firearms industry in America. The book is clearly an attempt to provide legal and philosophical support for the ongoing strategy of suing the firearms industry into oblivion, but the book's rhetoric and half-supported arguments detract from any impact a better written book could have made.
1-0 out of 5 stars Wrong from the start...
That is, the Amazon.com review. I haven't even read the book. Just wanted to check out the reviews. And the first thing I read is this, "Guns are responsible for about 36,000 deaths each year in the United States (more than half are suicides), and so Diaz views them as a public health hazard requiring a massive government intervention.". Imagine if you were to read the following: "Automobile ares responsible for [insert number] of [insert awful, terrible thing] each year, etc, etc.". Granted, many people are killed and injured each year in auto accidents, but one rarely, if ever, sees statistics cited in such an illogical fashion. A gun, like a car can injure no, until there is a PERSON involved, interacting with it, using it, either for good or ill. Fundamentally, whether it's a gun, a car, or a tire iron, this issue is, at the core, one of human behavior and how we can agree to respond to it in a free society. Hey, why not lower the speed limit -- everywhere -- to 25 mph! Get my point?

1-0 out of 5 stars FALSE
I will keep this short. I am a criminologist researcher I have done research over this subject for over 20 years.I would have to say that is book is false. The information is distorted to the authors liking.I am not a gun owner or a NRA member but I do believe in the "Bill of Rights."I do not suggest reading this book unless you want to waste your time on false, bias, and hypocritical literature. ...
