Simple to follow and creative
I believe this book is much easier to teach from than the text book, Mathematical Reasoning, that was issued for an education course I was required to take five or six years ago. It is also a better book because of the hands on games, which motivate students to learn more. I couldn't indicate five stars because I've only used a couple of chapters so far.

Book Develops Concepts, Not Just Drill
Hands On Algebra is a resource book for teacher use in Algebra I. It is not designed for independent student use. New concepts are developed with manipulatives first, then more work is done with games and/or graphing calculators. Detailed instructions are given with illustrations to help teachers inexperienced with hands on instruction to correctly apply math language to the manipulative actions. Very effective with average students and students with learning disabilities.

Not what I was looking for.....
Hands on Algebra appears to rely heavily on Algebra tiling.That is, using tiles to demonstrate factoring, polynomial multiplication, etc.I was looking for more of a projects book.If you are looking for a book on how to use tiles in the classroom, THIS IS IT.Otherwwise, look elsewhere. ... Great book for teachers
I am not a person fond of reading "help" or statistical or "you should do this to have a perfect classroom" books... This book is an exception.It is easy and quick reading.It gives numerous, fun-to-read examples of real experiences, suggestions and ideas.I would definitely recommend this book for middle school teachers that haven't been very long in the field. ... A Lifesaver!
I am very happy with my purchases. I got both Of Mice and Men and To Kill a Mockingbird and cannot believe all of the information, activities and ideas! Everything I need to teach my ninth graders the content standards, and the novels. I wish I had found these a few years ago--they would have been a lifesaver for me as a new teacher. These Literature Guides were recommended to me--and now it is my turn to do the same! Great product! VERY highly recommended.

Excellent choice for review of problems in written English
This text has aided me in setting up a variety of exercises for my own high school students. Although it is geared for college students, many of the concepts can be helpful on the high school level as well. The author'sorganization gave me a way to approach some core problems most Englishteachers meet.I shortened a few sections that met my special needs,taught them with my own examples, then had students create their ownsentences. I checked their work for appropriateness, then used them forgroup work.Involvement made the students pay attention; and seeing theirown sentences on thepractice sheets and quizzes encouraged the youngpeople to create better sentences. Very Comprehensive, do NOT cram!
Although I only received a 500 (23%) on the actual exam, that was only because I crammed and didn't try to adequately prepare and study for the exam. It wasn't the publisher's fault, but rather my poor preparation. I'm supposed to rate the book's content and that is what I'm doing. Truly Essential for the Middle Level Educator
I am the director of secondary school student teachers at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri. "A Great Book for Teachers!"
A candid and extremely helpful teaching guide especially for the beginning secondary school teacher. Content is well organized with clear explanation and suggestions of lesson components necessary for effective instruction. Emphasis is placed on preventive discipline, classroom management, lesson planning/lesson implementation, testing techniques, teaching across-the-curriculum and different lesson type models. There are also very useful teacher forms. A teacher's must have book!

Unlocking the secrets of classroom management
Lets face it, as teachers we know that even highly motivated students rarely know how to work together. In fact, my observation after several years of teaching is that many "gifted" students prefer to work alone rather than in groups. Nancy's book is amazing because it gives you the specific step-by-step building blocks to teach the specific skill of group interaction. Drawing on and enhancing the standard cooperative learning model, Nancy brings it to life with examples that I can use in my own classroom.
Oh please...
I was a student in Mrs. Steineke's class while she was writing/having the book published.Although her heart was in the right place in trying to help us all learn, I knew very few people who could stand her system.I personally felt like I was back in first grade.Although this system helped me to somewhat organize my thoughts, it was so rigid that it allowed very little of my own ways of doing things into the system.It also made me focus more on the actual guidelines of discussion rather than the material we were supposed to be covering.It really all comes down to value, do you value understanding of the material, or understanding of guidelines to discussion?

I stumbled across Nancy's book very close to the beginnning of the new school year and boy has it caused me nothing but sleepless nights!Sleepless because I have spent late nights creating new handouts, student guides, and materials.In addition, student work of high quality takes much longer to score.Read more

Excellent but needs updating.
I would highly recommend this book except that it is outdated.Found a few errors, but I loved it otherwise.Hope the author has an updated version.The activities make learning fun.

Roughly summarized, Readers, Teachers, Learners is a useful book with well-chosen accounts of different techniques for introducing topics, activity types that help make information stick, making the most of writing, guiding reading and research well, etc.However, it's a bore to read; when laying down VERY BASIC important concepts, it drones on and on about the obvious.Approximately the same amount of detail is used to explain activities and techniques, which is sometimes useful (but one still wonders what reading level and maturity level it's designed for).In short: good content and no concision. ...
