5-0 out of 5 stars From a Hampden-Sydney Man
In the fall, freshmen acquired the L.L. Bean catalogs of the men who'd graduated in the previous spring; the expectation was that the tradition would continue. As an alumnus (1990) from one of the nation's preppiest colleges, I have to say that this book is spot on.Birnbach captures the spirit of the aforementioned anecdote. The traditions of the Preppy are enduring, and the style never dies.

5-0 out of 5 stars definately THE handbook
Though some of the clothing examples are slightly outdated (preppy girls don't wear long skirts anymore ,just go to Abercrombie or J.Crew and take a look, and the SUV has replaced the station wagon), most of this book is so dead on its not even funny. Going to prep school, I look back with pride and honor at this book. Its really a collectors item, and even more preppy beacuse it is out of print!

5-0 out of 5 stars Meticulous Look at Preppy Life
This book written in 1980 says that the Preppy outlook is timeless. As a non-prep, I can't vouch for all the features, but as for clothes and jobs it still holds true.Putting aside all the details in this book (which are many) is a certain "je n'est ce what the f*ck" unique to the preppy worldview that this author has revealed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Building community
This is simply the best all round book on building community in schools available. The author wonderfully integrates practical strategies on the education of very diverse learners together -- in terms of ability, race, culture, language. It is a book filled with gentleness and grace yetsolidly based on research and practical information. This book should beread and daily used by every elementary teacher!

5-0 out of 5 stars A book that can make a difference
I really enjoyed the way Mara Sapon-Shevin writes -- everything flows, everything is connected, and her choice of words is apt and evocative. It's also very well organized. Her ideas are elegant and yet simple, clear, and concise. She names the problems that exist and ways to addressthem, and illustrates them well with clear examples.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars One Teacher's Review
This textbook is one of the most boring texts I have ever read. While the information is timely, the presentation of it is difficult to read and the purpose of the language used appears to be more to impress the reader than to impart knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect science methods book
This is the ideal science methods text.It offers a solid theoretical background and clearly illustrates the practical applications of this theory. The advice about classroom management is sound, sober, and realistic.I am delighted that the authors spend an entire chapter on often neglected topics (in other science methods texts) such asprofessional development and the history of reform in science education. This text is current, smart, engaging, and informed. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Informative, thought-provoking, insightful, practical.
Reading For Understanding: A Guide To Improving Reading In Middle And High School Classrooms is the collaborative effort of classroom teachers and education researchers Ruth Schoenbach, Cynthia Greenleaf, Christine Cziko, and Lori Hurwitz. Part One explains the reading apprenticeship approach inwhich a teacher serves as master reader to the student apprentice. Part Twodescribes how the reading apprenticeship approach has been put intopractice. Part Three discusses ideas for professional development andhelping teachers become aware of their won reading skills, acquire a betterunderstanding of the struggles students are experiencing with reading, andprepare for the role of master reader to student apprentice readers.Reading For Understanding is informative, thought-provoking, insightful, and practical reading for student teachers and has much of value for evenexperienced classroom instructors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended
(taken from a short review I wrote elsewhere) I measure my appreciation for most books by my need to annotate them,to converse with or argue against the authors in the margins. Bythis, and many other measures,Reading for Understanding: A Guide toImproving Reading in Middle and HighSchool Classrooms, written byCATENetters Ruth Schoenbach, CynthiaGreenleaf, Christine Cziko, andLori Hurwitz, is a remarkable book, one Ithink can help us all doour work better which is to say to help studentsdo their workbetter. The book succeeds on several important levels: itssummarizesresearch in concise but useful ways; it describes thenillustratesthe different reading skills and strategies it emphasizes, allofwhich are anchored in real classrooms in an urban high school;it provides a professional development component for schools ordepartmentsinterested in implementing their own readingapprenticeship or academicliteracy program; and, finally, it Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
As a clinical psychologist specializing in the field of Autism Spectrum Disorders, I have found this book to be an excellent resource.I recommend it to many families, andto teachers who work with this population. One of the strengths of this book is its articulate examination of the interplay between the cognitive, social and behavioral issues experienced by individuals with Aspergers. The book also suggests a number of intervention strategies that are realistic, practical and helpful for addressing skills deficits and encouraging the potential for individuals with Aspergers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a book about academics in the adolescent years ! !
This book focuses specifically on academic issues of children with Asperger's in middle and high school. There are many other books about other aspects of Aspergers, but this is the only good book I have found on this specific topic.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good scheduling advice but little on pragmatics
There is a wealth of advice in this book which all parents and teachers should find helpful.Plenty of checklists are offered and numerous cameo case histories are presented. The references are good but perhaps a bit limited (may be of importance only to researchers - no mention of central coherence deficit for instance). The main point of the book is the get schools to recognise and deal with stress build up in AS pupils before it boils over. Some of this will be familiar from Myles' other book on tantrum management.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for Brand New English Teachers

As a middle school writing teacher, it is always my goal to optimize the effectiveness of writing workshop. Most "ready-to-use" teacher resources that are suitable for mini-lessons fall short of my expectations, so I tend to create my own. Every page of this book is useful! The handouts may be used in any order and cover a wide range of literary devices, grammar rules and writing skills. 4-0 out of 5 stars Handbook for teaching through learning styles
For schools and teachers that are committed to implementing teaching according to the different learning styles, this is an important resource book.Detailed illustrations of various designs and techniques that will match the learning styles are given. It is important for teachers and administrators to first do the "Productivity Envrionmental Preference Survey (PEPS)" and for the students to do the "Learning Style Inventory (LSI)" which are available separately. Please note that "The inventory does not measure underlying psychological factors, value systems, or the quality of attitudes"(p.35).Table 2-1 gives a graphic overview of interpreting LSI profile. You get a good sense of the diversity among students. It is quite a daunting challenge to implement such a lerning-style based programme. The chart on p. 449 gives an overview of 4 stages. Some schools, with classrooms of 40+ students (e.g. in Hong Kong), may not have the physical space to incorporate the environmental changes required. Also where can we find in a regular school so many flexible and resourceful teachers who can creatively go beyond their usual learning and teaching styles? The awareness of the Dunns' comprehensive framework of learning styles is certainly most valuable and it helps us to be less judgemental and more respectful of individual gifts.I wonder if it would be an acceptable application to methodically stretch the whole class' learning styles, e.g., to be more visual or both global and analytic?Maybe more research can be done using these small steps of expanding one's learning and teaching styles. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not that much Information
I was looking for a book how to deal with teachers that are uneducated about ADD, my son has it and they just want to classify him as mentally retarted. I need more info.
5-0 out of 5 stars Teachers! Take note!
For its format alone, this is a must-buy for teachers and the administrators who work with them!As a middle school AP, I've visited far too many classrooms where teachers try to keep students' attention nailed to dreary handwritten overheads in black marker no less. Yawn.Every page of this book demonstrates what good overheads should look like (minus the color I'd like to see)while the text explains WHY this is imperative for ADHD students.GET IT!I love it. I ordered two more for my school.

4-0 out of 5 stars good basic guidebook
This book had some good background information about the teaching and criticism of Shakespeare set out in a simple manner. This is especially useful to teachers who may not have had any specific training in teaching Shakespeare and focuses on active teaching methods including classroom performance. There are a lot of innovative ideas to substitute the usual chalk and talk or reading lessons. While not all the ideas are practical or in my opinion worthwhile, there are a lot to choose from.

4-0 out of 5 stars Shakespeare, Rattle and Roll
This is a comprehensive look at the many components of the Bard's work.Lots of detail and very little is left out.It could prove to be a valuable source for English and Theatre Arts teachers. It is so all-inclusive that teachers can choose to focus on certain sections or keep it as a worthy resource (which it is).Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good if you have a bunch of smart kids
It might be because I am teaching middle school journalism but I found the worksheets in this book to be pretty high end.Although I do recomend the book for survival I would recomend Judith Ann Isaacs books on Secondary School Journalism if you want to excell. The only problem is this other book is really hard to find.

5-0 out of 5 stars The only book of its kind
Having been a high school newspaper adviser (notice, "adviser" and not "advisor"?) for 8 years, I am like the other reviewer who wishes this book would have been available much earlier. As it is, my first year of teaching in 1993 included four preps: English 10 Honors, English 9, newspaper, and yearbook. (Anybody want to say "Year of Insanity"?) While I did survive, I struggled that year because the resources for publication advisers are very few. Starting almost from scratch and given very little in support, I ended up putting together my own bound journalism resource book, which is similar in many ways to Osborn's work. But the "Survival Guide" I bought last year is still worthwhile for me to have on hand because it has a number of "cool" sheets that can be photocopied. (Kudos for the wire spine that make turning pages and laying them on the photocopier simple!) Only those who have advised high school publications can fully appreciate the words of wisdom Osborn has because she has obviously been there, done that. Every principal should order a copy for the school's journalism teacher. I certainly plan on utilizing mine in the years to come.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully well organized resource!
Both the new and the seasoned newspaper adviser will benefit from this book. It is full of tips and advice to help journalism teachers to both monitor and challenge their students. The workshop units are well designedto teach beginning journalism students new concepts and allow advancedstudents to sharpen their skills. The format lends itself to easyincorporation into lesson plans and reviews.A sample style book isincluded which can be adopted and personalized for any high school.I onlywish I had ordered this book earlier. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An incredible resource
I am using this book as a reference while homeschooling my middle-school son.It is far and away the best book of science experiments and demonstrations at this level that I have encountered.Every possible chemistry topic at the middle and high school level is covered with multiple examples, all well -indexed and clearly explained. Many can be done with simple materials around the house although some require more sophisticated glassware and a few involve chemicals and/or procedures that would require an institutional setting (for example, needing a fume hood). The latter are well indicated. Best of all, the activities are FUN--we did the Cartesian Diver today and it was a blast!

5-0 out of 5 stars A good resource book
This book has tons of labs and demonstrations. Many of the labs and demonstrations can be found in other chemistry texts and on-line, this book brings them all together with good explainations and illustrations.Herr and Cunningham have included additional information for the teacher and there are thoughtful extension questions provided for the students. This is a good resource book.I allow my students to try the labs after school and when they come in on their free periods. My only gripe is that it sometimes takes careful reading to follow the procedures as they are written in paragraph form. ... Read more
