GREAT BOOK
This is the best nonfiction book I've ever read. Once I started reading, I couldn't stop. Exciting from the beginning to the end. It's amazing how much pressure is on these kids to win. A must read for all football fans.
Excellent writing for a fantastic story
High School Football in Odessa, Texas is the driving force behind the entire city.Businesses close for the games.Everyone in town knows all of the players by name, their personal history, and their stats.The black and white of the Permian Panthers is reflected in every aspect of life from the bumper stickers on cars to the clothes people wear on game day.And nothing is more important than the idea of "Goin' to State."
A great read
I could barely put this book down once I started reading it.I'd heard about it before (in Sports Illustrated I think) and it had been on my reading list for a long time.I haven't seen the movie, but the book is great.

Great material for Geometry
I find the worksheets very useful. I have been using it since day 1 in my Geometry class. It has a variety of exercises and the applications to everyday-situation is interesting. Try it!

Most material in this book is available elsewhere
My school uses the University of Chicago School Mathmatics books, and most of the material in this "Activities Kit" is just a duplication of what I already have. I'm also not sure why it is called an "Activities Kit" since 95% of it is just worksheets. My students are tired of worksheets!

Really Usable Activities!
I've been teaching geometry for several years and this is the first book that I have found that has almost everything in it that I need.Theteacher pages are well-written and the student pages are very well done. Successful author, successful book, great ideas
I saw this book reviewed here on Amazon.I then went to the public library to review one of his other books.I liked what I saw.Then I bought this book based on the previous reviews and I'm very glad I did.It's definitely worth a 5 out of 5! Required reading for writing teachers

This is it if you have to be a jack of all trades in your art department.
There are not many books out there which is specifically for secondary level. A very resourceful book to have especially when you are in a sole charge department and have to teach across the different art fields at secondary level. It is also handy for those days when your mind goes blank and you have to come up with some quick exercises. Once you have gained confidence, you can also adapt them.

Handy
As a beginner teacher I found this book useful to fill in gaps in my own knowledge. It has step by step instructions for all basic art programs and is a good benchmark for when you are setting up your own programs. Things like plaster casting, clay modeling, pinhole photography, watercolours etc all have units of work.Although I did not use whole units I did use parts of the program to help create a foundation for my own work. Not a book you'd use everyday, but definately handy. I wish I had found it in my first year of teaching!

Great book for advanced art classes, but not for studio art
As a first year teacher I bought this book to help me out with the school year. There are many good projects in here for advanced classes, such as drawing and painting, sculpture, etc. However in this day in age its really sad that half the projects I would want to do for my studio classes I can't because they involve using knives, irons, etc. Its just to dangerous and I hate I have to think about my students stealing knives. An honest look at the middle school years.

She Knows How to Evaluate Schools
You simply don't have time to go around to all the schools your kid might be planning to attend. And if you did, it isn't ckear that you'd know just what questions to ask. Clara Hemphill does know. As the director of Insideschools.org she has spent years analyzing the public school system in NYC. She looks at the schools academically (of course) but also in other aspects such as friendliness, willingness of the teaching staff to work with the kids individually, social development and many more.

Great Book
This was a great book to read. I don't know everything there is to know about the Columbine Massacre, but enough to know that some have bits of the truth, but also their own ax to grind ("Bowling for Columbine", "Elephant"). This book was a quick read and kept my attention. It certainly fits in with all the different data sources, notwithstanding the conflicting stories that "officials" have given. I'm afraid that more and more of this is going to happen (just two days ago, a similar situation was averted). I hope that books like this wake up society to actually find out how to PREVENT such disasters. I think many of us "know" what the issues are, but are too afraid to do anything. This book helps keep that focus. It's amazing that the author kept going after all the problems. At the end of the book, it seems like anyone would give up, but the author gives hope to us and is trying to continue himself. Thank God for people like this. Highly recommended.

It kept my interest from start to finish
This book gives you a closer look at what was going on in the lives of Harris and Klebold from someone who was very close to the situation.I didn't know that abuse of kids by other kids in a high school got that bad, and was tolerated by the teachers, adults who should be deeply ashamed.I'd like to shake Brooks Brown's hand for the experience that he had.

Intriguing book!
This book certainly made me think!Brown and Merritt have brought amazing insight to this tragedy.What mental anguish to know in hindsight what your friends had planned.I can't imagine how haunted he must feel to this day.This book is written vividly enough to take you to that horrific day in Colorado, but is written without gruesome details. ... QRI- great for Elementary Students

Great book for all teachers.
I recently went to a teacher conference here in Idaho that had Jeffrey D. Wilhelm as a guest speaker.He was phenomenal and provided great insight into teaching reading to children.I won this book as a door prize and continuously use it as a reference.This book really gives teachers some ideas into how to make reading more engaging and meaningful.

Ideas you can use
Now I'm in graduate school, but I used to teach 8th graders in a low SES school.If I think his ideas are usable, which I do, they would probably work in almost any middle-school classroom from a management point of view, which is the problem with many similar teaching suggestions. If you're familiar with "learning styles" you will understand what he learned from his research, but he explains how to help students who need visualization (art) and kinesthetic (drama) to become better readers.I also recommend "Strategic Readers" and am planning to read his more recent books.

Great for remedial reading teachers
When I read this book last year, several months into working with an 8th grade remedial reading class consisting of all boys but two, I felt great relief to see that I was not the only teacher having such difficulties.Wilhelm used his difficult years of teaching remedial reading to kids who insisted on hating school and hating reading, and turned this experience into a practical approach to getting reluctant readers involved in a good story.His premise is generally that many struggling readers have difficulties because they are unable or unwilling to visualize what they read.He oulines practical ideas for helping readers visualize, generally by using process drama and tableaus in class.The book concentrates on a few different strategies, but he goes into some details on them, and just reading about these few strategies is enough to get you thinking about other ways to help your students.I'll never forget my macho boy students interpretating Charlotte from Avi's The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, sashaying around the front of the room.Once they got over their embarrassment, they enjoyed the drama and said such activities helped them remember and understand what they've read, as well as helping them connect with the characters. ... Great Curriculum Supplement
II find these math starters very helpful.I have been using them since the beginning of school and they have been a wonderful tool to help my students get back into the routine of school work.

Spicing Up the Topic
Works as a supplement to make students think in different ways. A must for students accustomed to rote problems such as those contained in the Saxon Series.

Nothing original here
Not even close to what I was expecting. I was looking for something more unique, fun, and interactive to supplement boring books. If the excerpt had shown some sample activitities I would not have purchased this book. The activities are nothing more than shortened book learning. For example, one activity starts by telling the student that mistakes can be made adding fractions and then gives two practice problems with errors that the student is supposed to find. That's it.
