Reference used in preparing oneself for ELAR certification
This book is very comprehensive in providing all that is valuable in teaching English and Language Arts.I used it has my second resource to prepare me to take the TEXES #117 ELAR 4-8 state exam.I plan on using it to guide me in lesson plan design.

Excellent reference book and motivator
This is one of the few accessible and important books for English Teachers.It provides ideas for all levels of English teaching.It should be part of any English teacher's library, although it is a bit pricy.Nevertheless it's well worth it.

Perfect for the busy English Teacher
The collection of literature units created by Ms. Collins are extremely well done.The lessons and activities are consistant and thorough for a complete unit study.Several different test options are provided as well as activities with varying levels of difficulty.This is the first set of literture units I've found that do not need to be adapted for classroom use.Just print and take to work.Many titles are available. The best Teaching English book out there...
I can't comment on the third edition entirely because I only have the second edition--from '99--but what's in there is really impressive, even to a methods cynic like myself. What I like about the Milner's is that they don't hesitate to give their textbook a personal slant: they provide their own perspective on theories and research as it relates to English instruction, and their classroom ideas are essentially their own preferences, based on reviewing lots of different sources. I personally can't stand it when a book comes out with the same old KWL charts and whatnot, so I love that many of the ideas in this book are novel and not familiar to most English teacers; it definitely stands out from similar texts.

Great Methods of Teaching English Text.
I used and read this book as part of a class I had on the methods of teaching English. I've read a lot of textbooks in my post-high school educational experience and usually they are pretty dry, dull, and boring. Not so with this book. Perhaps it was because the subject matter is so closely related to what I am currently pursuing as a career (an English teacher) or perhaps it's because the book was written by a couple of English teachers so they knew all the textbook pitfalls to avoid.I don't know. Whatever the case, this is one of a very few textbooks that I have read completely through that really didn't bore me. There are hundreds of useful tips and ideas and stories about actual teacher's experiences.The book is grounded in theory and research, but once again, unlike other textbooks I have read, it doesn't seem like that. The book seems more grounded in actual practice than it does theory. The book talks about such things as a brief history of teaching English, how to create an integrated curriculum, what's needed to create a unit plan, fostering classroom community, young adult literature, using writing in the class, how to incorporate theatre and mass media into the classroom environment, and assessment.My only complaints about the book is that it discusses assessment last (assessment should be discussed much earlier) and the book doesn't talk very much about classroom management. Overall, I think this is a great book for anyone who is thinking about teaching English or is preparing to student teach in a high school English classroom.

EXCELLENT!I can't say enough.
Excellent. I can't say enough about this text. Tons ofpractical ideas that will doubtlessly help me a great deal when Iteach my own class for the first time. The entire book is based in reader response theories and cultural theories of reading and writing, and there are entire chapters on such practical ideas of using drama, film, and more in classrooms.

Essential resource
This is a truly fantastic book--loads of practical ideas, grounded in just enough reader response and social construction theory to provide important context and rationales for activities.I am using the new edition in mymethods courses for future English teachers, and it's even better than theprevious edition I'd used in years past (something I didn't think waspossible!), with updated literary references, activities using technology,and a new section on classroom talk.Extensive sections on teachingliterature and writing, along with chapters on drama, assessment, unitplanning, etc. make it an ideal text for a methods course as well as anexcellent resource for experienced teachers who are looking for better waysto engage their students with English studies.Student response has beenoverwhelmingly positive, both during the classes and when they refer backto it once they're teaching.Highly recommended. ... Cleaver and Helpful
The book is organized very well and is extremely useful. The activities range from explanatory to challenging depending on the students level. It is a must for anyone forced to use a boring textbook such as the Saxon Series. It helps to keep the students challenged and interested.

It was worth the money
My lower-level sophomores loved the various activities.The students were far more motivated than when working out of the book.Some of the activities are much easier than others.There is a wide variety of topics and the format is slightly different for each activity.It was nice that the students could "check" their answers on many of the sheets. ... Superior Organization
I've been using Reading Reminders all summer to plan my sophomore reading class strategies next year.I love the organization of this book. Links to related sections are easy to find. Burke gives wonderful examples of so many worthwhile lesson ideas, like dense questioning, making connections, and repeated reading. There are dozens more. I can hardly wait to give my students the reading survey and to run off all the graphic organizers in the appendix! Superlative
As a 26 year veteran of the high school English classroom, I am thrilled with Jim Burke's latest book, Reading Reminders.It has come at a perfect time as well since, like many schools in our state, we have adopted a reading goal as part of our school improvement plan.Not one of the teachers in my department has a reading endorsement or any idea of how to teach reading.So this book has been incredibly helpful to us all (as well as to colleagues in other departments).It is so practical, so well-researched and thought out!It also reminds me of some of the best practice I engaged in when I started teaching but have somehow forgotten over the years.I also appreciate how easy it is to use - you can start implementing the strategies immediately although I think it is most effective to read it through beforehand to appreciate how beautifully it aligns with what is overall best practice in teaching English.Having done a great deal of research lately on this subject, I have not found any materials to equal this book. Excellent High-School Resource
This is a wonderful resource for introducing or reinforcing basic literary concepts.My freshman English students have responded to the activites very well, and I would think that the material would be easily adaptable to upperclassmen of varying ability levels.Highly recommended!

High-school Level Literary Analysis
If you are required to teach higher-level literary analysis, this will be a help.The book includes excerpts from literary classics with worksheets asking standard literary analysis: inference, characterization, setting, mood, etc.This is NOT a book for the remedial reading class and standard reading skills and activities.I have used some of the activities successfully in 8th grade and 9th grade honors classes, but it is a little too advanced for regular middle school classes. ... Helping the lower end catch up . . .
I read this book over the summer on a whim and really enjoyed Matt's writing, his suggestions, and his format for socratic seminars.I have been to training on socratic seminars, but this book helped me more than anything.He gives you little steps to take on your way to a full blown successful seminar.His ideas help get your kids asking questions, discussing, thinking, and writing at a higher level.My discussions have improved in class, and even the kids who usually don't participate have gotten involved in discussing and sharing their thoughts. ...
