After attending a writing workshop conducted by Harry Noden and realizing how powerful his methods are in teaching students the art of descriptive writing and in developing one's own skills, I was thrilled to find his book.Its nine chapters are full of specific, concrete strategies to create a writing masterpiece with each concept that is presented.

Great book
The book is really good and helped me a lot. But i am scared that the real test is harder, when I took the minest #1, I got 20 wrong out of 44 queations. I dont know how much help this book is going to have but I kind of having a little fun while I was doing the question. The book gives you many good explanation and tells you how to get the answer that is the best for the question. I'll see how good the book is by seeing if I can get into Bronx science. Which, I never doubted myself after using this book. It's a great book if you dont have a lot of time! Good luck to you all whose taking the test!!!!=]

Hope I get into Stuyvesant...
This book along with other books, like ARCO, PRINCETON REVIEW, AND KAPLAN are great if you want to get into the Specialized High Schools.This book contains challenging problems that are alot harder than the other books. At first when I bought the book I had no clue how to do any of the problems but now i understand everything. The explanations are very well put. Hope I get into Stuyvesant!!!

This book contains questions that are harder than many of the other SHSAT books. I am a private tutor and I have helped many students with all the available SHSAT books out there. If a person completes and understands most of the problems from this book, that person will surely do well on the exam. The road to change
Denise Pope's engaging book is a wonderful vehicle to stimulate dialogue and discussion about the state of the high school experience.Unlike most books on education that are written by "academics", "Doing School" features the authentic voices of students and the stress they feel in a competitive academic setting.I highly recommend this book to teachers, parents, and students as a way to consider changes to practices at schools that create unnecessary stress."Doing School" is also a cry to teachers to make classrooms engaging environments and to revise grading practices so as to encourage genuine work rather than "gotya" tests.

Blame the habits; not the goal...
I certainly empathize with the five students profiled in Ms. Pope's book. And I agree that they seem to suffer from an unhealthy amount of stress in thepursuit of their college goals. In my opinion, however, the blame does not reside on the goals themselves. The fact that these young adults have focus and a desire to make the most of their abilities is not something to be chided. Yes, their self-descriptions of these goals does ring somewhat materialistic. But who among us doesn't suffer from this same flaw? Does not the aspiring professional athlete dream of the money and fans, the aspiring academic dream of professional recognition, and the aspiring politician dream of power? The rationale does not diminish the importance of having a vision for one's life.
If you think don't bother, if you "feel" help yourself
This lady is complete ignoramus.She preaches to lower the standards, so more kids can get to college.She wants less stress for students, so no one would have to show any effort.Simply dumbing down America.

SAT Parent
I bought this solution manual based on the excellent book review hoping this book can help my kid to prepare for the NEW SAT. After I used it, I find out this manual is not good at all. Most of the math quetions, the authors just tackle the problems by guessing. Of course some of the problems you can solve by guessing, I do not have problem with that. However, majority of the math problems can be solve directly. They are ten times easier and quicker if you show students how to do it. Meanwhile students can refresh their math materials. That is all about the education!! I wish you all good luck on NEW SAT, but don't waste money and time on this totally no use manual.

New SAT Solutions Manual to College Board's Study Guide
I have purchased virtually every study guide for the SAT because I have four children and I know how important this test is for their futures. There is no question that the College Board's Guide is the best because it has real SAT questions but it doesn't have the explanations to those questions. What good is that? My children and I needed the solutions to these questions in order to be best prepared. The New SAT Solutions Manual to the College Board's Official Study Guide was the only guide on the market which had the step-by-step solutions to these questions along with essay strategies. The easy-to-understand explanations prepared my sons for the SAT so completely that they confidently went into the test and improved dramatically. I wish this guide was around when I was a student;I would have had a lot more options. I am so thankful to the authors of this book. It has already made and will continue to make a huge difference in the lives of my children. For that I will be eternally grateful.

A Must-have on the Bookshelf
This book triggered angry feelings for me. I wished I had a teacher like Rachael Kessler when I was growing up. Indeed, so few young people do. A Good Place to Start
This a great book for putting together the "mini-lesson" portion of a reading workshop.It provides teachers with reproducible worksheets that focus on reading skills and literary elements.It gives a brief description of student and teacher responsibilities for achieving a successful workshop experience.Although there are many useful tips, and the literary element section of this book is outstanding, it does not provide teachers with activities for incorporating critical thinking and it leaves the reader wanting strategies for establishing student-directed learning.A brief section on integrating different reader responsibilities, and a plan for setting up a workable management system to handle the flow of papers, portfolios, and reading response journals would make this book better.

Is it really "reading workshop"?
While this book may be very useful to teachers looking forreading skill activities, it is not developed in the true style of reading workshop.This book is made up of 300+ pages of copy-ready worksheets, each addressing a particular reading skill.If you're looking for a book addressing the procedures of reading workshop, including developing group dynamics and assisting students in reading choices and developing personal reading goals, then this is not the book for you.I found the title to be misleading.

A great teaching resource
As a beginning teacher preparing for a summer reading workshop, I found this book to be helpful. It has great ideas for setting up a workshop atmosphere. I also loved the guidelines and responsibilities of bothteachers and students that were included. Great Info - Terrible layout
The book is great, and with very useful information. However, I have a class of 20 students of whom I purchased books for a high school Forensics class, and after receiving the books, I realized that the answers are within the text. This would be OK (maybe) if the answers were on a separate page that I could have removed from the books, but instead, the answers are intermingled with important information. I purchased labels to cover up all of the answers within each book.This was not the best solution, and I wish there was either a separate answer key, or the answers were in the back of each book.I found out that some of the students removed the labels.I wish I would have realized this before my purchase, as I may have had to search for another book. This too, would have been unfortunate, as the class would have missed out on some great experiments.

Excellent guide
As a Forensics teacher I had great difficulty finding resources for doable labs in the classroom.This is one of the few lesson plan books available for this subject.A majority of the labs in this book are on the lower end of the 6-12 grade range and focus on activities that can be done with a minimum of materials.Some of the activities are quite impressive - including how to make a mummy, urinalysis (not with real urine), and chromatography.I love the way the table of contents lists subject tie-ins with general science; makes it very easy to relate your lesson plans to required curriculums.The only problem I've encountered with this book is the necessity of adapting the labs to older high school students rather than just copying and handing out the worksheets; occasionally the way they present the labs is too young for my students.

Condition of Book

Experienced Secondary Science Teacher Praises this Book
I am beginning my second semester using this book as my primary text formy secondary science methods class. My class has to provide students with aframework for teaching all the science content that they have mastered intheir 3 years of college. This book provides an excellent source forstudents to think about what it means to be a science teacher, tounderstand major curriculum projects in earlier grades that will impactsecondary science, and to address important issues of gender equity,inclusion, and national and state standards for teaching. There is too muchmaterial for me to cover fully in a 2 semester hour class, but, I try totalk about and discuss in class most of the content. The activities at theend of each chapter are excellent for giving students practical ways ofapplying information in the chapter.
