Just Plain Common Sense--In a New Light
I have used Sprick's materials for years.His material covers what matters to teachers--structure and how to create relationships with kids.His book CHAMPs, the Elementary Version is a very practical book--particularly when used with Encyclopedia of Behavior Problems--100 Problems, 500 solutions...You should consider this if you are a new teacher or if you are having problems with structure in your classes.Sprick is approachable and helpful in his style. Secondary teachers will find the content of this new book more related to them.

Mostly "textbook" examples...
I was looking for a "novel" approach to discipline, but this book reminds me of a boring textbook I had to read when I was in college. The book is the book for you if you are looking for that "textbook" kind of book, but if you have already read all the textbooks you wanted to read about discipline, then this book is not for you. I have found many other books about discipline more helpful than this one.

For the traditional classroom
This is a great resource for grades 7-12 teachers. It provides traditional solutions for 42 common behavioral problems. The provided solutions can be useful background information when discussing student problems with other teachers at the school.

Social Studies Activities Kids Can't Resist: 40 Sensational

The Beginning Of A Saga
John McPhee's second work is part of a dynasty that currently stands at twenty-seven works of uncannily good non-fiction.Rarely in the annals of modern literature has such a feat been approached.Stephen Jay Gould's record-breaking essay streak is the only comparable feat of what Richard Rhodes aptly terms "verity".The so-called non-fiction novel was invented during the 60's with Truman Capote's brilliant "In Cold Blood", but the book devoured Capote, leaving John McPhee with a twenty-six book lead and a magnum opus entitled "Annals Of The Former World."
A Special Person...a Special Place
I read this book when it was first published in 1966. Not long afterward, I had the privilege as well as pleasure of visiting Deerfield Academy and was given a tour of it by its headmaster, Frank Boyden. At that time, I was a Master of English at Kent School (Kent, CT). I recently re-read this book and another of John McPhee's, A Sense of Where You Are. The title of the latter work correctly describes Boyden's total understanding of his relationship with a once tiny school (founded in 1797) located in what remains a rustic village. Throughout his years as headmaster (1902-1968), he knew exactly where he was as well as where exactly he wanted Deerfield to be (and remain) under his leadership. Just as Mr. Boyden gave me a tour of Deerfield Academy during my visit so many years ago, McPhee enables his reader to take a comprehensive "tour" of the unique and compelling relationship between a remarkable educator and the school community he headed for 66 years.
A good book
Being business-oriented, I wish this book had talked more about how he had built up this school and ran it.It does do that but not to the level where this could be considered a business biography.From a business standpoint, this is a book about leadership and how great leadership can do great things for an institution.Read more

Great tool for English teachers
As a busy ESL teacher, I don't have a lot of time to do everything that I would like---including thinking up journnal topics for my high school ESL class to write about in the first few minutes of class. This book is a valuable tool that I use every day. Within seconds, I have been able to select an appropriate topic from the book and concentrate on other things for the day. Great book---great price and worth it's weight in gold!

pretty cool
This really is just a collection of journal topics.I liked it well enough.I think it will help me develop a gazillion topics of my own, which may well be its greatest value to me in the future.It also includes some info on how to actually deal with journals in the classroom.I found those less helpful, since I've been teaching for a bit of a while, but I think her tips are highly adaptable.So, if you're new to using journals in your classes, this could be a great resource.It's affordable, too, so why not?

High School Use
This book provides a quick reference for lots of journal topics.Woodward also provides useful tips on how to work journal writing into your class; for example, she discusses the scoring of journals and how they fit into agrading plan.Some of the topics could have yes/no or one word answers,but by simply adding an "And why do you think so?" the problemcan be addressed for upper-level students.As with any material you use inyour classroom, you need to tweak it so it fits your particular classroomsituation.The topics are general enough to give you a basic idea that youcan use verbatim or that you can modify.Personally, I found the topics tobe jumpstarts for my ideas as well, and huge time savers. ... A Big Help
For a guy who graduated from high school in 1980, and trying to pass a GED exam, it can be pretty humbling. I bought this book not expecting much help, but it has been a BIG help. I re-took the GED test, and it all seemed so easy the second time around. I finished the 2 hour test in 1 hour & 25 minutes, feeling really confident and with a good feeling. I'll find out soon if I passed, so wish me luck! But again, the book is very helpful, especially with geometry and algebra. It goes in depth a bit much, but it doesn't hurt to know too much, anyway. The English (reading and grammar) was difficult for me to understand. I had to read it twice in a lot of the lessons. Thoroughly adequate, though. Is this book worth it? I think so.
