5-0 out of 5 stars Using Aviation Safety Skills on the Roadways
We have all read text books, instructional publications or technical manuals that are just plain boring. This author's style of intermixing stories from his flying experience keeps the book entertaining and makes it easy to relate to real life experiences. This is not the standard dry, preachy, recitation of the same old driving rules. This book should be manditory reading not only for new drivers but anyone with a less than stellar driving record regardless of age.

5-0 out of 5 stars What could be more important?
As parents of five young children, my wife and I have decided to make this book required reading prior to allowing our kids to get their permits. These pilot awareness concepts and training techniques are a perfect application for helping all drivers stay safe while on the road.

5-0 out of 5 stars What could be more important?
This book offers easy to follow advice on how to keep our kids ALIVE behind the wheel.Today's teens have more distractions than ever while driving. And they think they're invincible. We grown ups know better.I loved the examples and descriptions.Really useful information. Your kids should read this the month BEFORE they get their permits.

Editorial Review

Not many adults would be willing to go back to high school voluntarily, but Elinor Burkett was driven by the question that has been haunting Americans since the Columbine shootings: What's going on in our suburban high schools? To find out, she actually spent a year at a suburban Minneapolis high school, sitting in on classes, eavesdropping on gripe sessions, attending pep rallies and concerts, and insinuating herself into the lives of students, teachers, and officials. The result is a first-hand and first-rate account of the myriad factors that are alternately paralyzing and pulling apart public schools. In a vivid lesson in high school social geography, we meet preppies and partiers, hip-hoppers, jocks, and Christian kids, and especially, the loners and outcasts who were harassed and feared after Columbine--kids like Roger Murphy, the school's only black student who quotes Dante and wears chains and spikes; Ashlee Altenbach, a hyperactive cheerleader who uses her ADHD diagnosis as an excuse for her behavior; and Reilly Liebhard, the misunderstood and sorely underchallenged school genius. Even more enlightening, Burkett talks to those on the frontlines, the teachers, as they debate the need for greater discipline and higher standards, complain about being made "the clothing-and-drug police, the lateness brigade and the parent hand-holders," and voice their anger over being the first to be kicked in the game of political football. Over the course of the year, this cast of characters amply illustrates the impact of such hot-button issues as zero tolerance, grade inflation, Internet plagiarizing, and the self-esteem movement. In the end, this one school throws adult society--and the tangled web of social changes that have helped undermine public education--into bold relief. Burkett has brought a keen ear and a fresh approach to a topic freighted by contradictory exhortations and political rhetoric, and penned a valuable and telling contribution to the debate over education reform. 5-0 out of 5 stars Asking All the Right Questions
Usually I don't like reading the investigative writings of reporters which are so often dry, but Elinor Burkett's writing is anything but dry -- and has all of the scoop of the best of the best of investigative journalism. I first read her book "So Many Enemies, So Little Time" about her experience in Kyrgyzstan which interested me because I had worked in Kyrgyzstan ten years ago.Because I liker her style of writing so much, I wanted to read something else of hers and chose this book.A look into a suburban high school is not something that particularly interests me, but with Elinor Burkett, whatever she is writing about, she builds an interest into the reader with her way of asking all the right questions, and some that nobody else wants to ask but everyone is wondering about.I highly recommend this book to anyone who just like to see a good investigative journalist dig her teeth into a subject and chew and chew and chew until the final product is sometimes disburbing, sometimes beautiful but always, a little closer to the truth.

1-0 out of 5 stars What was Elinor Burkett Thinking
I could not believe Elinor Burkett used REAL FIRST AND LAST NAMES then follow them up with negative discriptions. Many discriptions had personal medical information. Oh yes, I am sure she got them to sign waiver's as they turned 18. She did not care about the students just the story. She got so many facts wrong. Many people were hurt by her inability to be factually accurate. This book should be in the fiction section. I found the book boring and I work at Prior Lake High School. She offered no suggestions to help the lifes she tormented

1-0 out of 5 stars What Planet Are YOU From?
I can't believe that I read the same book as some of the other reviewers.Five stars for THIS book?I suggest some of you go back and read the classics.I'm not a former student of PLHS, a teacher, or an administrator. No, I don't have an ax to grind.I typically read 3-4 books per month on various subjects that interest me.

4-0 out of 5 stars A tale of two reviews
Sperber does a lot wrong in this book. His title is misleading. He does spend a good amount of time discussing college sports and their effect on the university, but he also takes long extended detours into topics such as honors programs, college rankings, professors' teaching habits, and the shocking lack of homework and studying done by students.Really, he's taking aim at the university as a larger entity. He commits just about every logical fallacy in the book (case studies used to prove large sweeping theories, post hoc logic, ecological fallacy), although really there isn't any way to experimentally study the variables he's considering.Sperber also comes off sounding like the nerdy kid from college who hated the dumb jocks in high school and college and now that he's got a job and they're probably all on skid row (or so the fantasy goes), he will now have his revenge. If this describes you, you will love this book.If the only pleasure you have in life is watching State U play football on Saturdays, then you will find Sperber as nothing but a killjoy.Despite all these problems, Sperber awkwardly brings up a few good points. Why is our culture so obsessed with sports and alcohol?Has the undergraduate diploma become a simple right of passage to which the middle and upper classes are entitled to?His base argument seems that either too many people go to college nowadays or we need to re-think the cultural mythology of what a college degree really means.

4-0 out of 5 stars Undergraduate Education Comes Up Way Short Next to Sports
There is not much doubt that undergraduate education for the typical student at large universities is most unsatisfactory: one is, with few exceptions, a nonentity with no opportunity to shape the educational experience. The only option is to follow the rules; then it is swim or sink. Furthermore, there is no doubt that forming farm teams for professional leagues with substandard students has no place in a university.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!

5-0 out of 5 stars An all-in-one literacy exercise book.
I love this book for its time saving worksheets. If you can only buy one time saving resource for supporting literacy then this is it. From morphology and syntax to metatheme and macrostructure, this book covers all the skills in accessible worksheets. Each topic has definitions and examples at sentence and text level as appropriate. The lay out of the worksheets is visually attractive with not too much text on one page, use of boxes, tables, diagrams, dot points and checklists to "chunk" the information. Each exercise provides specific instructions and achievable tasks. And it's such good value. I'm a Speech-Language Pathologist using the book in Language therapy with children with Language learning disabilities, but it is accessible enough for a student to use independantly to practice and polish their literacy skills.

5-0 out of 5 stars Carol Behrman knows her task?
Ready-to-Use WRITING PROFICIENCYLESSONS AND ACTIVITIES: Eighth Grade Level provides classroom teachers with a wealth of ideas to open creative windows, and enables students to reach beyond where they thought possible. Teachers will delight in the author's detailed lesson plans and practice tests. Activities and techniques designed to promote eighth grade students' writing competencies are appealing and fun. 5-0 out of 5 stars Writing Proficiencyis a definite 'ready to use'.
As a former writing coach in the public school system, I can see the activities would work well at any age.Ms. Behrman has made the activities challenging yet fun, and very user-friendly for the classroom teacher. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent source for Elementary drama & socialization skills
I work as a Art Focus Drama teacher for K-7 students who come from various socio-economic backgrounds and home lives.I found this book a very valuable resource, especially for students who have a difficult time with issues of trust, language, and ensemble work. It is great to have a resource that contains detailed exercises within a logical framework, that not only works, but explains itself in a manner that even classroom teachers, with no drama experience whatsoever, can accomplish. 5-0 out of 5 stars Clear, detailed guide for joy filled work
This book provided a guide for Becca Kirsch and I to work with a group of high school students. The activities described in the book build on each other and it was inspiring to watch the students' enthusiasm and discoverythrough the process.Michael Rohd is correct when he says that theactivities help people to get to know each other in new ways.I think thatthe interaction that comes from participating in these theater games iscrucial to help build new ways of communicating and problem solving.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "cannot-do without-it" book for youth and community worker
I came across this book in February 1998 during a one-week training workshop given personally by Michael Rohd in Helsinki (Finland). I consider this material valuable and anyone who works with young people or youthworkers should get it. I have used this book when giving training to youthand community workers. Needless to say, I had to adapt some of theexercises according to the local context. I would recommend this book toall those who want to be part of a revolution. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars a bit preachy
It discusses some obvious things about high schools--including some high schools are bad and some are good-- and makes a lot of general statements about how high schools should be run.5-0 out of 5 stars evaluation of our educational system, including home-schools

5-0 out of 5 stars The Students are Watching
quote from The Students are Watching: "School exists to change young people. The young people should be different--better--for their experience there. They should know some important things, they should know how to learn additional important things, and they should be in the habit ofwanting to learn such important things. They should have a reasoned, butindividual point of view. They should be judicious, aware of the complexityof the world. They should be thoughtful, respectful of thought and of ideaswhich are the furniture of thought."The Students are Watching isabout teaching morals through example and treating students with respectwhile delivering education in an ethical manner.I don't really view thisas a "how to teach morals" book, but as a guide to running anethical school. ...
