5-0 out of 5 stars Pirates and other heroes
Last night my 6-year-old granddaughter Emily and I hugged each other close, and watched "Eight Below" for the first time.
5-0 out of 5 stars Herstory with plenty of Girl Power!
Barbara Holland's book "They Went Whistling" is a delight!Holland uses wit, sarcasm and a vast knowledge of many incredible women. This book highlights not only well known women (Cleopatra, Joan of Arc) but also remarkable lesser known women. These ladies were not the "fairer sex" by any means.Their stories exude courage, brawn and too little glory. For those looking for some herstory this book is a MUST read.I found myself laughing, gasping and making list of women who I wanted to read more about. The stories blend together beautifully in a easy and smooth flow.Holland's wit is so catching and real I soon felt like she was a good friend or relative telling me stories of the past.Thank you Ms. Holland for the education and experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars No Glass Ceilings Here
The women in Barbara Holland's latest book are so refreshing in their feminism simply because they would not even know what the word means. They never looked at a label in their lives and had absolutely no idea there was a glass ceiling much less that they crashed through it.The feminist cliches of today would bore them silly. This is what makes this book so wonderful to read. These women simply did what they wanted to do, when they wanted to do it, and most were over-achievers in the creative and interesting departments. Barbara Holland's dry wit supplies the reader with an ample supply of everything from chuckles to belly laughs.Holland reveals the often unseen heroism andstrength of these women and shows everyone, men and women, what true individuality is all about. The brief biographies delve into the lives of Cleopatra, Queen Boudicca of Britain, Dr. James Barry (A woman who shall forever remain anonymous since no one knew until 'his' autopsy), Joan of Arc, Lizzie Borden, Isabella Bird, and Bonnie Parker. There really are too many to mention since Holland discusses some in passing and others in greater depth. She does this always with humor, respect, and a no-nonsense-myths-and-rumors-be-damned attitude. This is a world and an attitude, a writing style and an intelligence, one hates to see end on page 268. I only hope Ms. Holland will decide to write a second volume. We all need the intellectual adrenalin. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Most enlightening book I've ever read
This is by far the best book I've read in the last few years.I picked it at random from the library, but I didn't want to take it back when I was finished with it.As an aspiring anthropologist, being put smack in themiddle of so many different women's lives from all over the world at alltime periods of the twentieth century was absolutely fascinating.I'vemade a list of all the selections that have inspired me enough to make mewant to read the book it was taken from, and the list is two pages long! The book is an excellent montage of so many different walks of life, Ithink it should win some kind of award for it's superb editing.I wouldrecommend this book to anybody interested in other women's lives, and toany men wondering how we really think and feel. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One Woman's Adventure
A Cowman's Wife is a fasinating account of one woman's adventure in south-western Arizona. Mary Kidder Rak captured this chapter of her life in very personal and humurous terms as well as giving us a glimpse into ranch life in the early 1900's. If you're looking for a book that gives you an up close and personal view of the life of an adventurous woman or of life in the American SW., this is a must read! PS: Check your maps for the ranch Mary and her husband lived on, it's still a landmark! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Women I never knew existed
I was uplifted and very satisfied to be exposed to the range of women who have fought for basic humanitarian rights in the southern coal regions. These are normal people making their small difference in a world they seem to love.I would have loved to hear more about the assumed women listed such as Mother Jones, Sara Ogen Gunning, Alice Lloyd, Bessie Smith (all of whom can be looked up). Most especially, I would love to know more about Granny Hager, and Widow Combs. They are mentioned in this book briefly and there seems to be no other record of them.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Compelling and provacative
When first published in 1970, this book was a manifesto for a generation of women. Although it has not been updated since, it demonstrates how farwe've come and what is the next step for women.Uneven style and tone ofwriting give this unquestionable realness not often found in morecontemporary feminist anthologies.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A textile lover's delight, and great for history buffs as well.
I bought this book on the recomendation of my spinning instructor.I was expecting the documentation of early spinning and weaving techniques, and the discussion of preserved textiles.I wasnt expecting to be inspired to go out and buy a copy of the Iliad and the Odyssey to read about the textile and history references that she brings up!I had no idea that Greek mythologies mention items of clothing that have been found in the area and dated to pre-Greco times....and were stil identifiable items of clothing in the last century.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I've ever read
Anyone interested in so-called gender studies, textiles, prehistory, or just in regular people ought to read this book. The authoress, in incredibly simple language (she can't REALLY be an academic, can she?), tells the story of women and the textile work that has (pre-) historically been theirs. Bringing the insight that only a practicing weaver or spinner could have to the dusty world of archeology, she sweeps the reader into the homes of real people. Lots of metaphors, but honestly, it's that kind of book: rich. I only wish I could read it again for the first time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible history of women and fiber art
As a fiber artist, I am very interested in the history of fiber. Elizabeth Barber's "Women's Work: The First 20,000 Years" is fantastic, both as a history of the use of fibers and as a history of working women. I learned a great deal about women's role in society from her research, and it makes me proud to be a modern woman working with fiber, just as my ancestors did. Highly recommended! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Collection filled with feminine fire
Katherine Martin has compiled a detailed collection of feminine courage and real-life stories of going beyond one's comfort zone.
5-0 out of 5 stars Women role models
Katherine Martin's collection of stories reminds me that every woman, young and old, has natural talents and abilities to bring about supernatural results. A wonderful book that is sure to inspire readers to help make the world a better place.

5-0 out of 5 stars Women of Courage will inspire you!
41 women are featured in this thought-provoking book: some have names we recognize immediately from politics, medicine, spirituality & literature. Some for their derring-do & some for their expressions of inspiration. Some have made no headlines as they work with our homeless citizens or live with HIV, poverty or teach welfare mothers. One filmed documentaries in dangerous poltiical places. Another survived imprisonment at the hands of rebel bandits in a little known nation only to go to work, upon release, with refugees in ethnic-cleansing zones. Another stepped out of the shadow of a best-selling husband & learnt to speak her own piece while another is a pilgrim upon her walk toward spiritual knowledge.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Required reading
I agree fully with Jane Eliosoff's review and just wish to add that this wonderful book should be required reading in high schools and colleges. One of its best features is that it is truly multicultural in its treatment of the "first wave" of the women's rights movement, even though this book was written before the word "multicultural" was coined.

5-0 out of 5 stars The single best history of the US suffrage movement
This recent paperback edition of Century of Struggle, Eleanor Flexner's classic history of women's sufferage, has a splendid new introduction by her friend and collaborator Ellen Fitzpatrick, who relates the major events in Flexner's own life to Flexner's deep understanding of the complex social and politicalproblem confronting 19th- and early 20th-century American suffragists. There is no better account than Flexner's of the dogged determination of US women to achieve their political aims, or of the genius of their political inventiveness in a time in which both law and custom were against women's full participation in civic life. The achievement of the vote for women was extraordinarily difficult, infinitely more so than most people realize. In her own preface to Century of Struggle, Eleanor Flexner quotes from Carrie Chapman Catt and Nettie Rogers Schuler: "Hundreds of women gave the accumulated possibilities of an entire lifetime, thousands gave years of their lives, hundreds of thousands gave constant interest and such aid as they could. It was a continuous, seemingly endless chain of activity. Young suffragists who helped forge the last links in that chain were not born when it began. Old suffragists who forged the first links were dead when it ended. . . It is doubtful if any man, even among suffrage men, ever realized what the suffrage struggle came to mean to women before the end was allowed in America." ... Read more

Editorial Review

For anyone who wants a thorough introduction to the modern American women's movement, this is it: a rousing story of the revolution by a history professor who participated in its struggles. Ruth Rosen introduces her book by reminding readers of discriminatory practices that were common in pre-1960s America: "Harvard's Lamont Library was off-limits to women for fear they would distract male students. Newspaper ads separated jobs by sex; bars often refused to serve women; some states even excluded women from jury duty; no women ran big corporations or universities, worked as firefighters or police officers." She then proceeds to delineate the changes that make such discrimination seem unthinkable today. Her research takes in popular books, magazines, newspaper articles and television, the details of politics and law, and the individual liberation stories of not only famous feminists and thinkers but many lesser-known women as well.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Professor Rosen Documents American Women's Movement
With great insight in text and pictures, this book is a must read for every woman in our world today. The American women's movement shows how rights were won for women in a democracy. This book is a guide for others who seek these same rights. America has come so far and women need to know of the sacrifices that were made by many women (and men) to achieve this freedom for their lives. Professor Rosen makes sure all who read this book will know, and be given the opportunity to return something for this wonderful gift American women have been given.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful read!
This book explores the history of the women's movement in the 20th century.Although many books have been written on the first wave of feminism, this book deals with the second wave--written by a real pioneer in the field of women's history. The World Split Open shows how rights possessed by women today were almost non-existent less than fifty years ago.Although women gained the right to vote in the early part of the twentieth century, this book shows how far women still had (and still do have) to go.Ruth Rosen is an amazing person (I was a student in her women's history course at UC Davis last year), and I highly recomend this book to those interested in the study of not only women, but the American family as a whole.Further, I challenge anyone who sees "feminists" in a negative light to read this book and thus have their assumptions proven false.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting read
This was a very enjoyable and interesting read.Although I was an adolescent in the 1960's, it gave me tremendous insight into many of the privileges these courageous women fought for that many of us now take for granted. It was a fascinating eye- opener for me. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Book, Good Read!
This is not a history book, nor does it claim to be. So if you are a sailing purist, looking for a true history of what actually happened on Flying Cloud's maiden voyage, you will be disappointed.
1-0 out of 5 stars The invented bits ruined it for me.
Normally I will read and enjoy just about any non-fiction concerning the age of sail, but the non-fiction in this book gets drowned out by the (painfully obviously) contrived 'inner thoughts' of many of the participants.4-0 out of 5 stars A must for Clipper Enthousiasts
Sitting in my reading chair with my 3 feet Flying Cloud model (which took about 18 months to build) beside me, the story of the record breaking journeyto San Fransisco became really alive. With the detailed descriptions of all things happening on board it seemed as if my scale model came to life. I really enjoyed reading it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An impressively engaging anthology of real-life stories
Keeping Heart On Pine Ridge is an impressively engaging anthology of real-life stories in which Vic Glover reveals the challenges, history, bonds, and rich traditions that infuse and reflect the stark realities of life on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. One of the very poorest Native American reservations in North America today, these are stories of the authors' family and friends, an enduring native American warrior culture, commodity foods, "rez dogs", harsh winters, and neighbors, as well as the social and political forces that shape the Pine Ridge native american community. Keeping Heart On Pine Ridge is especially recommended reading for students of 20th Century Native American Studies, as well as non-specialist general readers with an interest in contemporary indian life and culture on an American reservation.
5-0 out of 5 stars A useful corrective to official versions of feminism
I strongly disagree with the reviewer who gives Wagner's book only 1 star. While the book is by no means flawless, it also has important strengths.Wagner offers an accessible history of one small portion of feminism and corrects the mistaken assumption that feminism is a "white women's" idea and movement.

1-0 out of 5 stars Shockingly pediatric
Dr. Sally Roesch Wagner is nationally regarded as a leading figure in women's history. During my undergraduate education, I was honored to attend her lecture on women's history struggles. Read more
