5-0 out of 5 stars How the other half played
In her book, GILDED CITY, M.H. Dunlop chronicled the execesses and outrages of upper class New Yorkers (especially the women of the uppermost uppers) at the turn of the 20th century. While hiding behind the facade that the lavish parties and balls they threw and the exorbitant clothes they had tailored for themselves were giving jobs to the lower classes, their effect was to shamelessly display their wealth and, ultimately, enrage a lower class that was finding the economy and job market less and less bearable. Peiss' style is scholarly yet without the distancing effect that that form of writing usually exhibits in less skilled hands. Her knowledge and passion for the subject are easily identifiable in this wonderful book.5-0 out of 5 stars Women's Appropriation of Leisure
Peiss begins her argument by explaining the relationship of industrial capitalism to wage labor in creating class-conscious leisure arenas, literally recalling Roy Rosenzweig's study.Peiss's distinction lies in "this conception of leisure did not develop historically in the same way for both sexes." (Peiss, 4). Sexual division ultimately shaped and confined women's leisure to their homes. Thus, the typical wage-earning females in pursuit of leisure were young and single.Their youth and marriage status turned their attentions from the leisurely pursuits of Rosenzweig's working men but to dance halls, amusement parks, and movie theatres.5-0 out of 5 stars The Inner Worlds of the Immigrants You wanted to know.
Cathy Peiss typed written work is a master piece. The inner worlds of the women immigrants are discussed in detail. The book focuses alot on the Jewish, Italian, Irish and Germanic Cycles of people who lived in New York.It explains how immigrant families spent their money on entertainment. Youwill see real live pictures of the past of commoner citizens. I recommendthis book to all [Men AND WOMEN] who wants to know more about the commonerwho lived in New York during that time. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Facinating insight on a pivotal figure in American feminism
In a clear-eyed yet obviously compassionate examination of Betty Friedan, the "mother" of modern American feminism,Horowitz reveals that his subject was far more worldly and politically concious than she indicated in her 1963 ground breaker. 5-0 out of 5 stars Explores the "missing past" forBetty Friedan
In this very readable book, Daniel Horowitz examines Betty Friedan's political and intellectual origins and finds good reason to question the widely held understanding that The Feminine Mystique was written out of theperspective and consciousness of a typical surburban housewife.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Could not put it down
Really two books. One, a series of pieces about inside Washington stories, often with characters who are largely off stage but important in how things get done in the seat of empire. Rather than the usual insider's view, Ms. Williams has an extraordinarily keen eye for seeing what is there for all to see, perhaps along the lines of I.F. Stone's insistence on using only attributed sources. The second book is an account of her diagnosis and subsequent experiences with an ultimately fatal cancer, its impact on her life, outlook, work, as well and an account of her medical care.

5-0 out of 5 stars Touching without being Treacly
I bought this book primarily because I enjoy memoir and it was represented in the media as a collection of personal essays by a woman who fought what was eventually a losing battle with cancer.
4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and light
I didn't know what to expect from this book when I picked it up.The title "Writings on Politics, Family, and Fate" is the order of the book which works very well.I had not heard of Williams and was introduced to her beautiful profile writing in the politics section. Her profiles of Barbara and Jeb Bush, Vernon Jordan and the relationship between Clinton and Gore were outstanding. In the family section you learn more about Marjorie and her personal life and then in fate you learn more on her struggle with cancer. Its a wonderful, touching book on a remarkable everyday woman. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars No new info, but interesting spin...
A fun to read, modern spin on the (unfortunately) same old story of the six women fated to marry Henry Tudor.Deeper exploration into the psyches of these Queens might have made it a more substantial work, but it's enjoyable for Henrician fans, nonetheless.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Spin-free" Tudor history
The assumptions and steroetypes that most historians (male and female) don't think to question are scrutinized here. At first I was doubtful of this book, but it won me over. There are a few minor factual errors (such as who walked with Anne Boleyn to the scaffold) that don't matter very much, but which remind you that Lindsey is first and foremost a feminist rather than a historian. There's enough good stuff here to make it more than worthwhile.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very readable, with new ideas to think about
This history/biography reads like a historical novel--Ms. Lindsey's prose is that smooth. The book tells the stories of each of Henry VIII's six wives--their stories as people, not just parts of Tudor England. Don't let the subtitle dissuade you--Lindsey did much of her research with primary resources yet turns many popular opinions on their ears, taking on such questions as "Were Anne Boleyn and Katherine Howard really immoral whores?" If you don't know a lot about this time period, you will learn it here; if you do, this book will give you some new twists to think about.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Three fascinating lives
Davis takes the reader deep into the lives of three quite different European women of the 1600s, showing how they courageously face family and career challenges. Each story is amazing.Catholic widow Marie Guyart goes to the wilderness of Canada to help found the Quebec branch of the Ursuline teaching order.Jewish mother of 14 children, Glikl von Hameln is a successful business woman, both as her husband's chief assistant and as a widow.Divorced Protestant Maria Merian supports herself and her daughters through her engravings based on her own ecological observations of caterpillars native to Europe and northern South America. I particularly enjoyed learning about Merian because I have been impressed by her elegant work which I have seen in a number of museums including the National Museum of Woman in the Arts in Washington, D.C. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars The origins of women's political activism in America
Kerber effectively demonstrates the limits of women's roles at the outset of the American Revolution and shows how these roles changed. For instance, Enlightenment thinkers, such as Rousseau, thought that women should be confined to politically passive domestic duties (a view which prevailed at the beginning of the Revolution). Kerber focuses on several women--Mercy Otis Warren, Abigail Adams and Mary Wollstonecraft--who exeplified politically active women that defied these 'Enlightenment' views. Though these women were the exception, they influenced other women that it was acceptible to be politically informed and still excell in their domestic duties. According to Kerber, this led to a political transformation of women's roles termed "Republican Motherhood," a concept that encouraged women to be informed politically and use their domestic influence to raise virtuous republican sons, and to politically influence brothers, husbands and fathers. This transformation from politically inactive domestic roles to active, Kerber argues, laid the foundation for the women's rights and abolitionist's movements. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Resource
FORGETFUL OF THEIR SEX is a truly outstanding resource to those interested in female sanctity and the history of women in general, as well as the history of women and the Christian church. This book came to me highly recommended and did not disappoint. In a decade that has offered so much by the way of investigative scholarship of women's monastic and religious history, this book is a stand-out. This book is by and large very accessible and in general a great read. I especially appreciated the many specific examples and stories included in the text.Read more
