Great photographs, but poorly organized
American Muscle Cars has terrific photographs and lots of interesting information.The first part of the book focusing on early muscle cars is particularly well done.Overall, however, the text is poorly organized andseems to jump back and forth between subjects and periods.

Excellent, but a little pricey
Goodfellow has done a great job of condensing the universe of Italian sports cars into this excellent, picture-laden book. Being an Alfa lover, I was glad to see they get star billing, along with, of course, Ferrari. But it's not just an Alfa/Ferrari lovefest, all are given attention, including many customs and one-offs. Many of the contemporary photos are very Italian-artsy, meaning a pretty model is often somewhere in the image, usually showing off at least a small portion of her underwear... It is not just a picture book, though, it describes the industry, design houses, social changes and other influences on Italian car design and manufacturing. It is broken down into eras, a fair way to cover the subject and mix up the car models. Many quotes from luminaries in the industry: Enzo Ferrari, Scaglietti, Tjaarda, etc. Some self-serving (Ferrari), but many were very frank about the highs and lows of the Italian (and worldwide) auto industry. This is a book every Italian (or just sports car) lover should have, it's a shame it's so expensive for only 156 pages. I guess it's the exoticness of the subject - if it was about NASCAR, it would be 300 pages and [cost much less]. ... Read more

Doing Car Design DNA
Retrofuturism presents two essays and an interview with the designer of the "New Beetle," the 2005 Mustang and other striking car designs with strong roots in earlier versions of those models.The book was published as the museum "catalog" for a show of "retrofuturism" in the car designs and drawings of Mays and designers in his studios at the Los Angeles Museum of Modern Art. "Retrofuturism" is the derivation of new designs such as the New Beetle, from concepts and visual principles established in an earlier design, e.g., the original VW Beetle. The designers' rough sketches and drawings illustrating evolution of their designs are interesting.But the photos try too hard to be art in themselves and present minimal visual information about the design of the cars pictured.Buy this book for the "J. Mays, Designer" essay by C. Edson Armi and the "Q&J" interview with Mays himself, not for its pictures.

In some ways it works better than the exhibition that's on view at the Geffen Contemporary... Fascinating
This has to be the ultimate bathroom reader or coffee table book for the trivia buff. Quick, fact filled reads on topics as diverse as Model T Fords, crash test dummies, Route 66, Rock City, Mustangs, GTO's and the evolution of the gas gauge plus fantastic vintage advertisements, colorful pictures equals 315 pages of never put down, water cooler conversation starting fun.

FABULOUS
I just received my copy of this book and have found that it far exceeds my expectations.It is not just a sit down and read a bunch of boring history about cars book.It is loaded with short and interesting factoids on all sorts of miscellaneous auto-related subjects.I'm not a huge fan of classic cars but I am a fan of trivia and "useless knowledge" and I am justthoroughly enjoying this book! ... I would have chosen zero stars if I could
This book has glaring factual inaccuracy when discussing some of the Chevelle models.The book gets quite a bit right, but the errors and poor choice of subject cars to feature for the earlier models is inexcusable. Good background information.
This book provides many interesting historic notes about the conception and development of the Chevelle line.If you're looking for the story behind the car and some exceptional pictures I highly recommend this book.

Missed the mark on accuracy of the data
It should have been a clear warning when in the preface of the book the author admits to not being much of a Chevelle entusiast.This fact is clearly illustrated throughout the book with poorly researched informationand obvious misstatements of facts.The photography is beautiful but manyof the cars, especially the 64 and 65 Chevelles pictured have glaringrestoration inaccuracies and are quite possibly faked originals.Aparticularly poor example is the white 65 Malibu SS and white 65 El Caminofeatured which both have obvious flaws and inaccuracies in theirrestorations.The authors and publishers have a responsibility to presentworld class cars in books such as this.Such irresponsible publishing onlytends to further confuse the enthusiast world with false and misleadinginformation.Read more

Only pre-1949 cars are featured here; but that still makes for plenty of pages of detail and a narrowed focus which will appeal to hot rodders of both 'hardcore' and traditional rods. Cruisin' is time trip back to yesterday's two-lane strip!

Must Read Automotive History
This book is truly a must-read gem.It is the first academic book about the Dodge Brothers.Though it has many in-depth footnotes the book is absolutely readable and tells a nice story all in around 200 pages.It is perfect for the professor of history or the person just curious about Detroit or automotive history.The book is also full of great photos: images showing the brothers, their families, the cars and the plants where they were built.
