2-0 out of 5 stars Gearheads Beware - Race Team Soap Opera
Growing up in Indy, I have a few comments after reading this book:
3-0 out of 5 stars beautiful photographs...not so great text....
This is a badly needed volume, at least to those of us who rememmber the "stand on the gas and turn left" days at Indy, when the cars looked like cars and things like aerodynamics and ground effects didn't exist... Some beautiful color photos plus a lot of b/w pics highlight it. The text skips about covering this driver, then that with what seems to beno special order at all....Surprisingly, only one photo of the car thatstarted (more or less) the roadster era, the car driven by the great BillVukovich, who had the breaks gone just bit different would have won 4STRAIGHT Indy 500's...(He had a steering failure which caused a crash just8 laps from the end of the '52 race, won in '53&'54, suffered a fatalcrash running away from the field in '55)However,the other great names ofthe roadster era are well-represented:Bryan, Ward, Rathmann, Sachs, Jonesand of course, Foyt. The price is bit high, but the photos alone make thebook worth it....

4-0 out of 5 stars I loved this book!
This book is not so much just about the cars as about the whole Indy roadster era. Scalzo covers the hard living characters who participated in the era of the "dinosaurs". His writing style is gritty and alittle bit melodramatic but, believe it or not, has actually mellowed sincehis "Stand On the Gas" days. If you look back on"Indy's" past with affection, and disdain the current over-hyped,over-sanitized and over-marketed racing scene of today (like I, and Scalzo,do), you'll like this book. There are many beautiful photos of the carsthat Scalzo talks about as if they were friends and characters he misses. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Exciting Mix Of Automobile History & Premium Photography
When it comes to the love of automobiles, my hub is somewhat of a road warrior. So, when he purchased this book, I must admit I feigned polite interest. After thumbing through pages of classy, glossy dream vehicles--- I was hooked. This was no ordinary book on cars. This was eye candy with all pedals to the metal.5-0 out of 5 stars The Open Road Comes Alive
Lewis captures the epic wonder, strange beauty, and raucous vitality of the American road. Her eye is attracted to the things we often notice, but seldom observe. The text is excellent, offering actual experiences of those who journeyed along these fabled highways in the past. The color photography is mouth-watering and extremely vivid (the neon practically jumps from the page), but the black and white photos are especially haunting. They explore some of the same terrain immortalized by photographers such as Robert Frank and Dorothea Lange. All in all, a splendid book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile time-travel guide; review exerpt from lacar.com
...Arranged in chronological order, the seven chapters take us from 1895 through 1999. The pictorial focus is on American iron, largely from the '50s and '60s. Lewis' narration accompanies in a casual tone with dry humor and interesting historical anecdotes, allowing the reader to mentally complete the cross-country journey with ease. I found myself reliving the multiple coast to coast excursions I took in the 1970s and felt the seeds of yet another trip being planted.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book Around About Fords of the 50's!
This is a must-have book if you're a Ford classic car buff--or a 50's fan. Author Mike Parris has a way with words--and pictures. Parris provides the pertinent (and most interesting) facts and stories behind Ford cars of the fab 50's, gleaned from research as well from interviews with some of the decade's key Ford execs. Included: behind-the-scenes info that brings the auto scene of the era to life. Photos are from premiere Detroit auto library collections--but also include Mike Parris' original (and outstanding) photography. (I especially love the pics of the Woodies, wood-sided station wagons that came and went with bobby-sox--seems they weren't practical once put to the test--but talk about a look that's gotten funky-cool with age!) Also included: some of the fun and nostalgicadvertising of the era. This book is a visual treat and captures the golden glow of one of FoMoCo's fabbest decades. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Historical Pictures
The book is an excellent coffee table book. Wonderful old color pictures of a by gone era. Highly recommend it for any one who likes to remember the old gasser wars.

5-0 out of 5 stars ESSENTIAL
if you are at ALL interested in historic drag classes, horsepower, hot rods, etc. this book is a must. There simply isn't any other source of information and photographs on gassers out there.Hundreds of rare photographs of gassers from the golden age make this a perfect coffee table book. The appendix at the back listing all the cars and the classes they raced in is also very helpful if attempting to "recreate" a historic gasser. This book is required reading!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great history of a well-loved class
Like Davis' previous book on Super Stockers, this one's a keeper.Unlike that one, this one has a wealth of color photographs. And Davis supplements the pix with interesting, well-researched text.Anyone with an interest in this class or drag racing history in general will love this book.An A+ effort. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A Mopar Addition More Than a Bible
I loved Randy Leffingwell's Mustang and Corvette anniversary books and praised them in my site reviews.I was attracted to Mopar Muscle since I wasn't as familiar with the Dodge/Chrysler/Plymouth sport coupe and sedan lines from the 1950s to the '70s as I was with Chevys, Fords, and Pontiacs.
5-0 out of 5 stars Mopar Muscle: Fifty Years
what can I say? WOW.... this is a very nice book with hundred of color pictures and lots of great info....a must of all true MOPAR guys.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent enough, mainly for Mopar fans though
A general look at Chrysler performance cars from the past and present with splendid photographs (courtesy of David Newhardt). The book looks at all the muscle/pony cars that Chrysler developed and built over the past 50 years and discusses each models development and year-to-year changes. As well, the author, to his credit, did not lament over the past and all that was lost (as some authors do) but instead also discussed new and exciting models Chrysler had been releasing over the past couple of years (300C, Crossfire, etc). And did I mention the photos were fantastic? However, the book does have some failings and it's mostly due to the writing and the layout.Although the author should be credited on giving a comprehensive view of Chrysler's performance cars (new and old), his actual text leaves much to be desired.I found the writing on each model to be quite dull at times as the major focus of the author was only on the model itself (discussing yearly changes and additions to the option list) and not on the actual industry and trends that inspired their development.I found that very little was spoken of Chrysler's competitors who had major impacts on the models Chrysler created and released.Paragraphs detailing year-to-year changes just didn't make for exciting reading (I'm sure there are technical books which would give more comprehensive detail on the yearly differences between models if that were ones desire). This was especially apparent when the earlier models were being discussed.By the time the author arrived to the present however, he had begun providing more details as to the how's and whys of each new models development. This was, again, to his credit. The other issue I had was that I found most of the pictures did not match up to the text (regardless of how dull it was). For example, the author was discussing the Chrysler 300G to L but only provided pictures of the 300F (about a dozen pictures of the same model taken at different angles).Another was where the author showed a number of pictures of the '69 `Cuda 440 but only dedicates one sentence to the car (which basically said the car was offered in '69).Although I do understand the difficulty in aligning photographs and in fact even obtaining some photos, I still believe more effort was needed here. There is nothing more frustrating then to be looking at photographs that are almost 10 years behind the text as well as reading about models with no available pictures (maybe I've never seen a 300L before).Overall, the book does a decent job of covering all the major models and providing a reasonable amount of detail. The pictures were excellent and there was some decent textual coverage of the models. It just got a little tedious after a while. ... It is the best book for mofifiand the small block and get the most power you can. I am really happy with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book on Small-Block Chevys
Part of this book's title, "big-inch, small-block", reminds me of oxymorons like "jumbo shrimp", "pretty ugly", "mandatory option", or "open secret". That put a little smile on my face before I even opened the cover.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great basic resource when purchasing/evaluating a car
The above review is ridiculously harsh.Yes, most of the VIN and engine/trans code info is available on the net, but few of us have the luxury of a wireless connection when we're out in someone's garage trying to buy their car. This is a great carry-along to help give you good information on decoding the VIN tags and trim tags present on most cars.Depending on the car, this can tell you what engine should be in the car, what colors it was built in, options, the area it was delivered to new, etc.All very useful in deducing the desirability and honesty of the car in front of you.Highly recommended. From the hundreds of cars I've inspected, I've found the info in the book to be at least 95% accurate, which is quite good, in my experience.

4-0 out of 5 stars Essential For VIN Decoding
This book and it's sister book for cars from 1970-1979 are a must have for those who need their VINs decoded. It'll give you all the information on any American car which we know is essential for retoring that 1967 Cougar or 1964 Polara...

1-0 out of 5 stars This is useless
Well,From the title, I expecteed to get catolog of all car part codes/ ID's. This book even went so far as to give a lame excuse why some models weren't covered. It ONLY has Engine ID's and basic VIN decoding that iswidely available on the internet. Oh, yeah, a few transmissions werecovered. Three words...."BAD, STINKY, USELESS"! ... Read more
