3-0 out of 5 stars Generally useful for a subset of events
If you're considering a career in client-driven events (e.g. the Feldstein wedding) or an event support business (e.g. lighting design), this book will provide a useful overview of basic business issues. Most of these issues would require additional reading and the authors provide a good list of references. The coverage is a little uneven, with some topics (e.g. focus groups) discussed in great depth and others (e.g. risk managment) glossed over. There is also some redundancy (e.g. research techniques are discussed in some depth in two different chapters). But you'll also find lots of good advice on sound business practices.3-0 out of 5 stars Too much for a beginner
This book is very technical and goes into a great depth of the "business" end of running your own company. It is not a good book for someone who's just beginning and just wants basic information about the event planning business in general. For my needs Affairs of the Heart by Nancy Gluck was a much more insightful book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dollars and Events
This is a good basic text for starting an event planning business. It includes step-by-step instructions for how to get started, manage the finacial end and maintain your edge in the business. There are lots of sample forms for everything from assessing your suitablility for this business to a sample contract.Throughout the book are anecdotes about people who succeeded at the particular element being discussed.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 4.5 Stars
This is an excellent book if you would like to get an overview and history of Washington DC's Cherry Blossom Festival. There's some really good historical photographs and drawings and it was enjoyable to read about the development, meaning, symbolism, etc. of the Cherry Blossom Festival.I would rate this book 4.5 stars only because while there are some great photos of the spectacular trees there aren't nearly as many as there should be.This is a great book if you are new to Washington and/or looking for a gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars History of the Cherry Blossom Festival.
The book is very detailed and wonderfully illustrated. It starts with the traditions and roots of Cherry Blossom Festivals from Japan. Then it explians how the cherry blossom trees came to Washington and how the US picked up the traditions of the Cherry Blossom Festival. It ends with a chapter about how to care for cherry blossoms and how they exist, not only in cities of Japan and Washington, D.C., but also in other parts of the US, such as New York and Ohio, Missouri and California.Lovely book.
4-0 out of 5 stars I have not seen this book, this is what I've read about it
Lots of illustrations and facts about the role of the cherry blossom tree in diplomacy and landscapes.Info on the trees' cultivation, how the U.S. got the trees, places outside of Washington, DC to see them.

3-0 out of 5 stars This leaves me with a few questions...
In general, I thought that this was a wonderful resource. I am a little bit concerned about a couple of things. On July 25, the author lists St. Christopher Day as a Catholic celebration. She does mention that because not much can be proved about the existence of Christopher, he was removed from the canon. True... then why did she include this in the book?As far as I know and as far as I can determine, this is not a day that is even celebrated in spite of the canon. The actual feast day of July 25 is St. James day.I also wondered why the author listed St. Christopher Day as specifically a Catholic celebration but other Catholic observances/celebrations she listed as Christian. The feast of The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on August 15 is listed as a Christian observance as is Corpus Christi. True, both are Christian celebrations, but if you are being specific in other places in the book I'd think that with these two in particular, you'd want to specify Catholic. I noticed that in the list of books consulted in the back of the book, the author lists many general works about holidays and celebrations. She also lists specific works about Judaism, Islam, and Hinduism. She apparantly did not consult a book of Saints or a book of the Christian Calendar. It appears that she relied on the general works for this information.I wonder why. As I said, this book is generally very good and presents quite a bit of information. But the fuzzy information and presentation regarding the Christian and Catholic days left me wondering about the rest of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource book for teachers!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for my church library
I was fortunate enough to find this at a rummage sale for my 2 year old. After reading it, I came to Amazon to grab another copy for my church library.I was thrilled to find that it focuses on what Christmas celebrates...the birth of Christ. It is not often that you find a book for this age group that centers on the true Christmas message while including diverse cultures.I love the crafts included also; besides classroom use, this would be a good theme for our church's Christmas for Kids program.

1-0 out of 5 stars Religious celebrations only - not celebrating different cultures
Any "cultural" info included in this book is drowned out by the religious celebration traditions. It often seems to almost demean the other fabric of the childrens lives that is not christian.
1-0 out of 5 stars This is biased-stereotypical text
I do not recommend teachers purchasing this text if you work in a public shool. The age recommended is 3-8, but I do not think that this would suffice with my first graders. They are left hanging and wondering.I am sorely disappointed.I expected much more factual information about the true traditions of each country as opposed to actually Christmas, as Christmas is not the majority celebration for most of the countries listed. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and informative for all age groups.
Floating Lanterns & Golden Shrines: Celebrating Japanese Festivals is brimming with detailed and charming illustrations by Toru Sugita of seven Japanese celebrations. Author Rena Krasno begins with a discussion of theorigins of the Japanese people and the creation myth of Amaterasu, the SunGoddess. The first festival is Setsubun (the day winter ends) and linksideas of Japan's indigenous religion, Shinto, with ideas and imagesborrowed from China. Traditional Japanese family holidays follow: Obon(remembering one's ancestors); Kodomon Hi (Children's Day); Hina Matsuri(Dolls Festival); Oshogatsu (New Years); Sapporo Snow Festival; and theCherry Blossom Festival (honoring the heritage of more than 848,000Japanese Americans in the United States. Key information about arts anddaily life are interspersed throughout and include: ikebana, taiko, lacquerware, bonsai, origami, hiku, traditional Japanese sports and martialarts, and how Japanese names are formed. Included are recipes, games andother activities as well. The text provides historical background as partof retelling four folktales for a more intimate sense of Japanese culture. The Japanese language is explained as common, relevant phrases areintroduced. Floating Lanterns & Golden Shrines is especially recommended for ages 8 to 13, but will be found entertaining andinformative by all age groups. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good, yet simple Thanksgiving book
I have a three year old, and this story is just right for her.It is simple enough that it keeps her attention, but it provides details such as why the Pilgrims left England, the harsh winters they had to endure, the different tribes of Native Americans they encountered and became indebted to, and it explains the harvest feast and why the pilgrims were thankful. I recommend this if you want something that gives a simple yet not overly simple explanation of the first Thanksgiving. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Modern Slant on Age-old Customs
There are many books on Halloween (including another by Jack Santino), but this book is unique in presenting a look at how very old customs have persisted amid the social turmoil and political unrest of Northern Ireland. Since Santino is an American folklorist, one would expect an outsider'sview of Halloween. Instead, having lived in Northern Ireland for anextended period and formed working relationships with folklorists there,Santino offers a view of a cultural phenomenon that is both sympathetic andobjective. His insights are worth considering. Perhaps the only drawback tothis volume is its lack of historical perspective or comparison with otherCeltic cultures. Despite this, the present volume is a welcome addition tothe library of anyone interested in Halloween itself or Celtic culturalremains. ... Read more
