4-0 out of 5 stars Caste, Cliche, and Controversy in The Victorian Governess
I've always been interested in the role of women in history, and most of all, just what did women do. Most books on the roles of women in history tend to focus on women who were rulers, or women that were rebellious and refused to fit in, and only recently has those women in the less noticable areas of life have been being noticed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Guide No Matter Where You Are in Your Homeschool Journey
We've been homeschooling for two years.I picked this book out of our homeschool group's library mostly because the title made me smile.Survival is always good, right?!This has been a really encouraging book to read.It is like getting to sit down and talk with an experieced Christian homeschooling mom. The lists of resources at the end of each chapter that are invaluable. The "journal" entries about her family in each chapter are my favorite. My husband did balk a little when he saw the chapter titled "Blow up the TV".I promised him our TV is safe..
2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I was really looking forward to reading this book, especially after having read the glowing reviews from other readers.5-0 out of 5 stars Very Encouraging and Informative!

5-0 out of 5 stars Learning in Spite of Labels changed our lives.......
From this book I learned to respect my son for what he is, not what he should be.Learning can only take place when you accept your child for what he/she is.My attitude toward my son was that I needed to "fix" him, so that he could be the same as other children.I learned to accept and celebrate his uniqueness. This book is from a Christian perspective but I think it would help anyone who has a child who is struggling academically, emotionally, or physically. We homeschool our special needs son.As per Joyce Herzog's advice, he spends a lot of time doing things he is interested in, rather than trying to grind the academics in him. He's much more receptive to doing his school work if he's able to play with his Legos or look at maps, things he loves doing! As I said, this book was life changing for our family! The author's suggestions are practical and easy to implement, which is great for families who are already worn out from dealing with their special needs children. The chapters are short and easy to read - no education jargon here! This is a very helpful book, written for parents in a style easy to understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars My second "Bible."
Of all the books about educating children with learning disabilities, this is my favorite. It is written from a Christian perspective, so it may not be for everybody. However, Herzog has many years of experience, practicalsuggestions, and she puts all of the jargon and psychobabble in the properperspective.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars an accessible, supportive book--so true to its title!
I love Terrie's tone in this book and her helpful information. I am planning on homeschooling (and have been since my first was in utero) so I already knew a lot of the information presented here (from John Holt), yet I was beginning to doubt myself as my daughter became older. Would I REALLY have the guts to keep her home and not enroll in kindergarten? Terrie reminded me of all the reasons that I want to homeschool: 1) the education will be better--lighting a fire rather than pouring information into a bucket, 2) it will strengthen our family, 3) we will be freed from the schedule and politics of the school system.
5-0 out of 5 stars A very substantive book!
I bought this book a couple of months ago because I needed a pep-talk and figured this was a fluffy rah-rah type book that would give me one.
5-0 out of 5 stars Must Reading for the Homeschooler
I have been reading in preparation for homeschooling for two years.I discovered this book about a month before I started. It is just the best!Terrie Bittner gives such detailed information on all that we homeschoolers need to know and do.She offers us great suggestions for record keeping, organizing our materials and teaching our children. This is absolutely the most helpful of all the books I have read. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A wealth of practical information and ideas.
The Guidance Manual For The Christian Home School is a complete, step-by-step, "user friendly" guide for home schooling parents to prepare their homeschooled children for college or a career. Homeschoolingsupport group leaders and activists David and Laurie Callihan draw upontheir more than fifteen years of practical experience to show homeschooling parents how to foster active thinking and moral discernment intheir children that will make a real difference for their sons anddaughters in life and learning after their home schooling years. TheGuidance Manual For The Christian Home School provides specific tools, plans and procedures for parents in getting their children where they wantthem to go as they prepare for entrance into the wider world, includingmission opportunities, apprenticeships in Christian organizations, andopportunities in the military. The Guidance Manual For The Christian HomeSchool is "must" reading for any parent considering ahomeschooling option for their child, and has a wealth of information andpractical ideas for even theexperienced homeschooler.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Guidance Manual for the Christian Home School
This book is absolutely THE most comprehensive resource book I have found for preparing my Home Schooled son for college and/or career! It covers everything from long term planning, testing, work, advanced studies, when& how to begin, resources & web sites to check out, and a wealth ofother valuable information.Although it is intended for the HomeSchooled High Schooler, I feel this would be equally beneficial to ANY highschooler as well as their parents, who want their child to get the besthead start on the road to college and adulthood possible. This is a greattool to use to gauge where and how well prepared your student is for theirfuture!

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely essential!
This is one book you CAN judge by the cover...if you read the cover, I mean. Not JUST opinions from "experts", this book is stuffed full of absolutely essential information only parents who have successfullyhomeschooled their own children from toddlerhood to college can offer. 100%twaddle-free, with much to offer any family. Whether you are just beginningto consider home-education or have all but completed your studies at home, you will want to dog-ear the pages and keep it close to refer tofrequently.Don't tell your friends you have it unless you know they'vegot their own copy! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of money...
I was completely disappointed when I purchased this book. Most of the information in it is out dated. The contact information for the homeschooling services was inaccurate.I wasted a lot of time looking up the correct phone numbers and web addresses for many of the companies listed.I think the authors shouldupdate their information or people are going to start thinking that they're just out to make a quick buck.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good resource book
This is a good resource book. As far as helping you individually in your homeschooling it's not a good book. But telling you were to go for help it is great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Legal & Support Sections All Updated & Accurate
I rely on the reviews of others when I buy books. After reading one review listed here, I was concerned that the information would not be reliable. However, upon reviewing the NEW edition, I discovered that the authors have not only updated the legal and support sections, but have updated resource info and even the discount coupons included in the book. As an old-time homeschooler, I can say that this stuff changes in the homeschooling world almost daily, and the authors deserve credit for staying abreast of the latest legal news as well as the constantly changing homeschool support group information. A big round of applause is deserved for keeping the resources up-to-date too -- which also changes with the wind. My favorite parts of the book are the "typcial day" and "curriculum" sections. Everyone who has homeschooled for any length of time knows there is no such thing as a typical day or a typical curriculum. We also know everyone assumes that there is.The Lepperts have provided a glimpse into what a typical day and a typical curriculum might be like. They are careful to let the reader know that one-size-does-not-fit-all.That's exactly what makes homeschooling such a wonderful choice for so many square pegs who don't fit the round holes of traditional schooling. This is a MUST READ for anyone considering homeschooling -- and the coupons are a nice plus as the discounts they offer really do help pay for the cost of the book! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars still the best source of balanced info. on home schooling
As a scholar, working as an associate professor of cultural and interdisciplinary studies at AntiochCollege, I have a student population that contains a large number of home schooled students.Much has been published in recent years on home schooling, but this balanced collection remains the best source of information available on home schooling. It includes information on state regulation, historical context, the reality of particular family's experiences, the motivations of different groups heavily invested in home schooling, etc...For any academic undertaking a study of home schooling, for any parent considering home schooling of their own child or children, I highly recommend a serious reading of this definitive book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Just a Spoonful of Sugar
This engaging book is a welcome source of inspiration for parents seeking to promote "numeracy" or "math literacy" in their children. The author makes a persuasive case for shifting our emphasis inmath education from the memorization of definitions and procedures tohands-on exploration of mathematical concepts through solving problems thatare meaningful to children. The heart of the book is the suggestions forparents to "do math" with their children through an approachanalogous to that described in the now-widely accepted literature on thebenefits of parents reading to children. The author suggests specificactivities for exploring math as a family, broken down by elementary schoolgrade level. Some of the recommended activities, such as ways to adaptboard games to explore different concepts, are appealing and easilyimplemented.Others are not.In her--often charming andinfectious--missionary zeal for her subject, Mokros underestimates just howmuch like medicine graphing, charting, mapping and planning activities canbe to the unwashed, semi-innumerate masses among which I count myself.Fornon-math lovers, there is no way that snuggling up to do math together isgoing to compete with a bedtime story. Many of the activities recommendedfor kindergartners were too sophisticated.Presumably, a 5-year-old whocan handle these activities is being reared by parents who already havenurtured their young one's math literacy and do not need this book.Forthe rest of us, there is still much of value in this book and the author'supbeat style does make the math-medicine go down in a slightly moredelightful way. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not informative at all...
I just reviewed another book by Vicki Caruana and said basically the same thing. She has a bland writing style and goes on and on without saying anything in my opinion.
5-0 out of 5 stars Practical how to book for home schoolers.
This is a good basic book to help you get started or give you some encouragement in the journey of home schooling. She asks a lot of thought provoking questions in the first chapter that by answering, will help to clarify what your goals are for your family in the way of education. There are also questions at the end of every chapter to make sure that you are understanding what you read and applying it.I enjoy all of Vicki's book, this one is a good place to start. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Encouraging and uplifting
I have been home educating for 11+ years and this book continues to be a source of encouragement for me.Gayle Graham shows the ins and outs and ups and downs of not only educating your child, but the demands of housekeeping and your own distractions.1-0 out of 5 stars Do not buy this book
I have been home schooling for about 1 year and I am always looking for books to read on homeschooling to keep me up to date or even introduce me to something I havent thought of. I was very dissappointed and would not waste your money on this book. This book is so simple and basic that it really doesnt cover anything except that you couldnt find on the internet with a few keystrokes. I was very disappointed in the writer and her views on how to home educate. Her views actually give amunition to those against homeschooling. Her views on homeschooling are more for keeping your children at home to teach them values rather than to concentrate on educating them. My goals when I took my 6th grader out of public school was to teach her more on her level, not to have an extra house keeper. Dont waste your money. There are many other great books out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm now convinced I CAN homeschool!!
Until I read Gayle's book I was only convinced that I agreed with all of the philosophies behind home schooling. With her organizational ideas, her practical approach to teaching the three R's, and most importantly how sheteaches to trust in God for results, I now feel confident that I can teachmy child and teach her well!! This book has been a wonderful encouragementto me and I know I will keep it on hand for a long time and refer to itoften! Thank you Gayle Graham, for you loving concern for your fellow homeschoolers! 5-0 out of 5 stars All a person needs to know about teaching someone to read
If you are a homeschooling parent who has not yet begun to teach your child to read, I highly recommend that you read this book. Beechick cuts to the chase and minces no words when it comes to boiling down how to teach reading with the phonetic method. She points the finger at curriculum companies that lead parents to believe that teaching a child to read is difficult and that it requires purchasing expensive curriculum.5-0 out of 5 stars Nice, but this book IS part of "The Three R's"
"The Three R's" is a collection of the three little Beechick books, "An Easy Start in Arithmetic", "A Strong Start in Language", and "A Home Start in Reading".5-0 out of 5 stars GIVE YOUR CHILD THE ONLY KEY TOFREEDOM!
Ruth Beechick brings her vast experience as an educator, editor and (terrific!) writer to this work to help ANY parent who can read (not to be taken for granted anymore..sad to say) teach their child(ren)to read. VeryNECESSARY no matter where your child gets schooled. Get this book, use itand pass it on. You'll be giving the gift of a lifetime to the world. Anold proverb says 'whoever changes the life of one soul (especially a child)changes the world' this is true for good or evil, so make it for GOOD foryour loved ones. ... Read more
