5-0 out of 5 stars Learning to Learn
This is a terrific book! The strategies in it are useful and easy to follow. In being able to understand how each student learns, you can better teach that child. Also, when the students themselves understand how they learn, they can adapt their studying to fit their personal style.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent source for grades 5-12+
If I could rate this book more than five stars, I would.I've been a study skills consultant for many years, and a high school teacher even longer. This book I recommend to both parents and teachers. It comes with duplicating rights for an individual teacher's classroom (but the amount of paper you'd use if you duplicated it all would be prohibitive for most schools). In my classroom, I've picked and chosen the units I felt would be most helpful for each class. The work is clearly explained with good examples and self-tests.The illustrations are whimsical enough that they are not offensive to high school students. What's even nicer is that the students see the value in these lessons--they don't have to be sold.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent rescource
I teach study skills to 7th and 8th graders--this is the text I prefer. It is clear and well-written, even if a little wordy.I teach it in units, having the students learn one skill, then building on it.Good Stuff!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth Buying Twice!
I had to buy this book twice.I liked it so much that I recommended it and loaned it to a friend who never returned it.I purchased it a second time because I missed it so much.Very enjoyable reading with a great book list.I refer to it often along with "A Charlotte Mason Companion" and "Educating the Wholehearted Child."So go ahead.Buy two of each!Your friends will enjoy it/them too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best overview of Charlotte Mason methods and ideas available
I've been homeschooling for 10+ years and have been collecting books on Charlotte Mason's homeschooling methods for that long, as well. This little book is the best resource I've found for actually "doing" homeschooling in a Charlotte Mason style. It's not overly rigid or difficult to understand.Just pick a topic you want to do with your kids, open to that chapter, and you're off and running!I recommend this book to anyone and everyone who's interested in a child-friendly, learning-rich homeschooling environment for their home and school.I've also known several people who have been rescued from homeschool burn-out by reading, and implementing, this book.A+

1-0 out of 5 stars Not that great.
I did not appreciate this book.It is an uptight and rigid book, which contains misinformation. The author often presents her opinions as facts, and her theological ideas leave a lot to be desired. .Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good basics butyou need to be discerning
First, you can't homeschool your chid for FREE.This is a bit of an overstatement. However, there is much free material on the internet such as Bartleby's and Project Gutenberg, among lots of others that provide free books. However, you do want to have some sort of hard copy because young people need objects in their lives to help them in their discover of the world, not just information. This book does do a good service demonstrating how much of formal schooling is spent on needless things like administration and 'bricks and mortar' and technological teaching devices that really don't have much function other than allowing a school to brag about its up to date pedagogy. There are other resources like books, workbooks, and readers that can be purchased VERY cheaply. Many classics, for example, are available for one dollar. You can even find them on Amazon. 2-0 out of 5 stars not free and not accurate
I always read the reviews before I purchase but didn't.I sure wish I would have!I have just tried many links listed.... finally the last one worked but everything on the site cost $$$$.Don't waste your $$.

1-0 out of 5 stars Complete Waste Of Money
I was so disappointed in this book. I too expected to find tons of resources to help with homeschooling and instead found a book full of links that either didn't work or cost to use. There was nothing free about this book to be honest. You can't even get onto the website that supposedly keeps the book from being outdated. Instead you are left with nothing. Thankfully I was able to return this and buy something useful.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrifying.
Some of this advice is good, but most of it is crap in today's world. My grandma gave me this as a kid and it freaked me out sincerely.I felt almost sick thinking of what my life would be like if I actually acted the way they tell you to.Thank God this stuff is not expected of women anymore...

2-0 out of 5 stars Karen Andreola's Poor Revision
I first read this revised edition, and then I went back and read an original unrevised version. Karen Andreola did a poor job in revising Mabel Hale's delightful book "Beautiful Girlhood." Frankly, I found her revision to have an unbiblical feminist flare to it that I wouldn't want to encourage in my (future) daughters. To everyone that I recommend "Beautiful Girlhood" to I always make a point to have them find an original edition, and avoid Karen Andreola's revised edition. It would have been better to have left well enough alone. =) Look for an unrevised editon--it will be a blessing and delight and well worth the read!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not inspiring
Sadly, this book isn't very inspiring. To me,it wasn't written in a way that would actually get you thinking, like other books I've read.Frankly, the author wrote this book with a rather dull tone. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but difficult to read
This book is very interesting to read but you probably would not want to use it in your homeschool as I was hoping to because the type is small and hard to readThis must be because of the way that it was printed or the type or printer that was used, I don't know. This is a shame because it is biblicaly based and very moral and spiritually uplifting reading unlike most of the begining reader material out there. If only it could be reprinted with clearer type. ... How Is My Fifth Grader Doing in School is a thorough and"parent-friendly" guide to helping your fifth grader where aparent can help best. This book answered questions in a straightforwardmanner and offered suggestions that bridged the gap between home andschool.I found the terminology to be understandable and free of excessive"educationalese" that plagues other books of this genre. 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Struggling 6th Graders!
I was bad in math, kind of bad in reading. I did some of this book and it's great, but the reason I didn't give this 5 stars is because in the 'Math' section, the formulas aren't that good and not just that, and some things are not include. But the biggest flaw is when they say what time is it in another place and they don't give a map to tell you! You have to look on the Internet for fricken' 2 hours to find all that!

5-0 out of 5 stars New views on Education
John Holt puts to the read a new perspective on what education really involves. He talks about a self-directed learning process that makes a lot of sense.

5-0 out of 5 stars A seminal contribution to education policy discussions
Instead Of Education: Ways To Help People Do Things Better by alternative education advocate John Holt (author of the 1964 book How Children Fail) is an iconoclastic and seminal work presenting a persuasively argued case for "un-schooling" from traditional classroom structures and curriculum fare, to innovative, self-directed learning as the basis for a truly creative life. A direct challenge to the complacency of today's educational status quo (even in this political age of "no child left behind" and school voucher proposals), Instead Of Education should be required reading in every Teacher's College, District School Board, and governmental education policy development office whether it be federal, state, or local. Instead Of Education is a significant and seminal contribution to education policy discussions and commended to the attention of education reform activists at all levels and from all perspectives.

5-0 out of 5 stars The only book I needed
I have homeschooled for 12 years. I used this book to prepared transcript and portfolio for my eldest child who applied to colleges/universities last year. This book is excellent - straight forward, easy to follow, plenty of examples. You can not go wrong with this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This step by step guide is a great resource!
We are currently assembling a portfolio for my homeschooled teen. Loretta Heuer's book has been very helpful. The authorincludes easy to follow instructions on how to document learning and present the homeschooled college applicant in the best possible light. The book emphasizes that even non-traditional learners or unschoolers can pull together a solid transcript. Particularly useful were the reproducible worksheets used for listing films viewed, books read, trips taken, etc. Heuer even goes into great detail on the importance of word choice, and her organized list of verbs is a nice bonus. I feel a lot more confident about the whole admissions process after reading this guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Homeschool Portflios
I have homeschooled for 5 yrs and we are always looking for better organization for our evaluations and now we will be facing graduation and then college. This book has been a tremdous help to me. Letters, forms, what to expect the colleges will be looking for as well as our local school when we have our yearly evaluation for the county. Full of excellent material, helpful hints and "how to" letters to be written to school officials, colleges, ect.and most importantly to me, how to put it all together so our best work and achievements can be showcased. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars I wouldn't suggest this book
I recently bought this book, and then promptly returned it. The opening line of the preface is an unclear, run-on sentence, which concerned me right from the start, and the book is generally overwritten, devoid of proper punctuation, and repetitive. As a result, I feel that using this book to teach writing might be like getting your cat to teach you how to swim.My family did have fun suggesting alternative titles before settling on "Any Child Can Write As Well As Me Do".

5-0 out of 5 stars A great addition to the home library
As a home schooler of seven plus years, we have been using the suggestions and ideas in this book for the past couple of years and have found them most effective. Our children enjoy the activities and I have noticed an improvement in their writing skills which I am sure is due, in part, to these activities. The book itself is a very easy read and I would highly recommend this book to anyone. It's a great resource for those just beginning home schooling and, for those already established, provides some new ideas to add to their programme. For those not home schooling it will assist parents who are eager to help their children improve their writing skills. Well done Mr Wiener and thank you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Writing Advice and Ideas
Descriptive, creative expression is the focus of Wiener's book. He gives many concrete examples of how to improve the quality of one's writing. This book is full of fun activities to encourage lively, precise writing--yet ithas none of those ghastly, contrived writing assignments.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Called to Teach
Called to Teach is not just another book for teaching method, its unique focus is based on the Christian model of teaching. Therefore teaching becomes incomplete when one knows solely on teaching, the key to thesuccessful teaching determines by the heart of the teacher. The effect ofteaching in the Lord can profoundly touch eternity. The key principle ofbecoming a successful teacher is to humble ourselves before God, a lifesubmission. The root of teaching model in book is built on the idea ofdynamic synergism. Dynamic synergism literally means combined elementswith a driving force. The book is consistently focused on three elements ofteaching and learning: heart, head, and hand. These elements areinseparable if one wishes to become a dynamic synergist. One thing I likethe most about the book is its emphasis on the heart of teacher, a heartthat would go beyond just teaching, rather it is a heart for life changeteaching. ... Read more

I stumbled across this book when I asked the Well Trained Mind Discussion Board to recommend a program to introduce my kids to fundamentals of economics. Two people recommended "Nebels", which I googled searched, found, and purchased.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!
I bought Nebel's Elementary Education on an impulse and have been most impressed with Dr. Nebel's educational philosophy and his ideas on implementing them into a child's life. The science education that most children recieve is dismal.I am most grateful that I have Nebel's Elementary Education to help me along the way to guide my children in discovering the world around them.If you are looking for a book to help you help your child learn reading, writing, math, government, and a broad range of science areas then this is it! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Pretty cover, dull book
For a book promising to reveal the why and how of homeschooling, this one does remarkably little of either. The first half of the book is completely taken up with lengthy descriptions of the problems in society and the school system; only after 100 pages do we get into anything resembling practical advice.5-0 out of 5 stars Public Shools receive failing grades
Anyone with children should read this book before they make a decision on where to educate their children. This book reviews politics, curriculum, and morality as it applies to public schools in the United States. This has helped me make the switch from preference to conviction. The schools of today are very different from the schools 10 to 20 years ago. They are dangerous, anti-morality focused, and saturated with secular humanism. This book helps clarify those issues and shed light on what happens while the parents aren't looking.

2-0 out of 5 stars Didn't know this book was Christian based!
I was mislead by the title of the book; I was looking for GENERAL information about the how and whys of home schooling from a non-denominational point of view. I plan on teaching my child about God andreligion, but not as part of my home schooling cirriculm. I wish I hadknown about what the book was really going to discuss. ... Read more
