5-0 out of 5 stars A Reason for Handwriting: Manuscript A
This is a great book for basic handwriting. It is organized so that your child can do it themselves without your help.My kids think it is fun to do too.

5-0 out of 5 stars motivating curriculum!
My first-grade daughter enjoys this curriculum. Each week focuses on one Scripture verse, most often from Psalms or Proverbs. The student traces then copies a few words on each of the first three days of the week. On the fourth day, the student writes the entire verse on practice paper. The last day of the week, the student gets to choose a special "border sheet" on which they will write the verse and color the pictures. They are encouraged to do their best work and can give the border sheet away. My daughter wakes up on Friday and says, "It's border sheet day!" You can use this curriculum in conjunction with A Reason for Spelling, as the verse for each week is the same. We will be continuing with the next level of this curriculum for second grade. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Woman Is Full Of It...
ideas that is. :) I read this book before I even had the wonderful pleasure of meeting and getting to know Kristin. I loved that it was filled with ideas not only for the pagan homeschooler but also for anyone who wanted to teach their children from a more natural/nature based approach.
5-0 out of 5 stars Talk about a niche product!
To quote Mr Dobbs from below: "Looking back at my experience in public school, I can remember very few things that I learned."
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Ideas!
This book is truly a great jumping off point for any Pagan parent who is trying to figure out ways to add, or teach Paganism to their children. Ms. Madden has given the homeschooling community a real gem that has been helpful to my family and countless others that I know.

5-0 out of 5 stars Daily practical encouragement from a kindred spirit
discovering Mrs. Wellwood's devotional has truly enriched my life on a daily basis. We always begin our homeschool day with a children's devotional, but finding a good hands-on devotional written for my particular needs has indeed been a challenge. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great addition to the day
I happened on this book some time ago and have read and re-read - I can't wait for her next book - This reminded me of why we homeschool and helped my day to day perspective.

5-0 out of 5 stars A daily encouragement for Christian homeschoolers
Jackie Wellwood is warm, vulnerable, and encouraging in this devotional. Her daily topics seem to be just what I needed to hear on a particular day. It's like having a quick phone call from a friend each morning before Istart homeschooling. I feel like she understands what I'm going through andyet encourages me to see things from God's perspective. If you buy thisbook, I recommend reading only one entry per day and savoring it as dailyencouragement...can't wait for Jackie to write volume II! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For Christians Only
Let me say right off that if you are not a Christian, you will not like this book.On the other hand, if you are a Christian and want to become more organized, this is the book for you.It was invaluable to me!I am a pretty organized person, but with three small children (6, 4, and 2) and starting to homeschool, my organizational skills were definitely challenged. This has great ideas for organizing all your homeschool materials. She also challenges the way you think and your heart attitudes about things. She goes to the spiritual source that we need to start with.EXCELLENT BOOK FOR CHRISTIANS!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not What I expected...
I was very disappointed by this book lack of warning of its religious premise. It is not necessary to be religious or Bible savvy in order to be a homeschooler or organized. If a book is going to quote the Bible so many times it ought to warn the readers on the back cover. The copy I got offered no warning at all and it wasn't until the second page that I realized that this book was not for me.I have nothing against religion but, a book that uses it to justify the meaning of homeschooling or being an organized parent is useless to me and others like me.The author and publisher should have been more upfront about it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book but condescending at times.
I am a relatively organized person and this book did give me some new ideas on doing better which were easy to implement. The only problem I had with the book is that the author is very opinionated.According to her, I have too much time on my hands because I read more than five books a month.Isn't one of the main goals of homeschooling to foster a love of reading in our children and wouldn't modeling our love of reading be a good thing. The author is lucky that I do read more than five books a month or I never would have gotten around to reading hers. You can get good info out of this book but just be ready for some strong personal opinions. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide for the new Catholic unschooler!
I am just finishing this book, and it has been very helpful! We have used private and public schools, have homeschooled with various curricula, both secular and Catholic, but this book has given me the freedom to do what works for us. I am not going to worry any more about when and how the children are learning -- because they ARE learning! It is such a relief to know that we can do this with a Catholic mindset.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not what I would have expected
I was very disappointed with this book. The main reason is that I really didn't find anything new in it.The author seemed to quote John Holt so much that it really seemed to me that it would be better just to read his books, which I have. Most of the books that the author used, in fact, are common ones that most homeschooling parents have probably already read. She just quoted other authors throughout this book.I would describe the author's method of homeschooling more in line with very relaxed homeschooling than what I have seen with other unschoolers.
5-0 out of 5 stars Taught me how to be a better teacher to my children
Whether you are a homeschooling parent or simply a parent concerned with the quality of your children's faith formation and education, you owe it to yourself and your family to learn a bit about the concept of "unschooling".In her new book Homeschooling with Gentleness: A Catholic Discovers Unschooling (Christendom Press, October 1004, paperback, 132 pages) takes a look at this "gentle" variation to the traditional homeschooling path.As a mother of two Catholic school students, I must admit that I initially approached Andres' book from a perspective of suspicion. My reading of this book, however, produced much fruit in the form of an enhanced appreciation for my own role, and especially that of my children themselves, in their own educations. In his comments on the book, noted author and professor Ralph McInerny reminds us that "The Church has always insisted that the parents are the primary educators of their children."Far from being critical of formal education, Andres book is a positive and uplifting commentary on the concept of "unschooling" and shares ideas and suggestions that will be of value to any family, regardless of your educational preferences. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars More Than Just Product Reviews!
This book would be worth 5 stars for the product reviews. But there is so much more! This "whole earth catalog" of homeschooling is a gentle reminder that homeschooling can be seen as a lifestyle, or even as a worldview, and that education is just one small part of the larger process of building a family and living in the world.5-0 out of 5 stars One-of-a-kind!A book the keeps on giving

This booked was loaned to me by the school guidance councelor because our daughter was having some problems in school.I wanted a copy for myself for future reference.Things are broken down into subject and are age appropriate.I like the question and answer sections in each chapter that helped me to see that my child was not the only one with this particular problem. It was helpful by giving you ideas that you may have never thought of.It covers just about every subject you could want (except foreign language). This is a wonderful book for parents of elementary and middle school students. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I was hoping for
I was looking for advice on how to teach several children while maintaining a clean home.Sadly, this book did not offer such advice. The author uses a live-in housekeeper which is out of our budget. The suggestions she does offer are very generic and not very useful. Not much time is devoted to the scheduling of multiple children. She offers some different schedules from other families, but doesn't really show how you would actually use them.
2-0 out of 5 stars Misleading, on the whole
A quote from page 126:"A good steak dinner laced with strychnine is farm more dangerous than a clearly marked bottle, especially if you are hungry."

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent addition
Great for homeschoolers or anyone wanting to learn more about root words in our english language.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
This is an excellent book to have and to use in any language arts program. I've used it with my grade 3s and my grade 4s. I didn't use flash cards as suggested; instead, I wrote the root words out on chart paper and then wrote out any words we knew from that root. For instance, "spec" is to see; knowing this, the students could then define spectator and spectacles. Of course at times, they would find words that look like they come from the same root but do not (special). That's a teaching tool too.Read more
