Good read
I grew up in and around Flint, Michigan during the decline of the auto industry there. It was very common to see family members and other people I knew in "the shop" deal with the seemingly annual layoffs and the re-hiring process. Rivethead does a good job illustrating this to people outside of the auto industry.
Rivethead rocks! Is he single?
This book is great! I had the book on tape, but I like to read for myself rather than listen. Read it in one sitting and found his voice to be humorous and intelligent at the same time. Additionally, Michael Moore fans will appreciate this book as it gives some background history on him as well. Anyone who enjoys reading non fiction will enjoy this book, as it talks about the monotony of factory work and being jerked around by M.N.C. (Multi national corporations) I would like to find more material from Ben- he has talent and should use it.

Ben Hamper has hit it right on the rivet!
Having survived working the assembly line for five years('97 to '02), I can tell you it hasn't changed much since Hamper's early retirement.I could identify with so much that Ben had to write about in this book, except we didn't have our own Howie Makem.I recommend this book to anyone and everyone.For those who work on the line, I definately would suggest reading this book! ... Insightful Biography
The People's Tycoon is an insightful and well-balanced biography of Henry Ford, the man who helped usher in the new mass consumer society along with the concept of mass production which produced his famed Model T. This car became a symbol of the ordinary person's ability to partake in this new era of plenty and opportunity. Henry Ford, a leader of this vision, is presented with both his accomplishments as well as the contradictions behind the man and the changes he wrought as well as some of his darker qualities. Watts succeeds fairly well in presenting Ford as the people's tycoon.

A visiting professor recommended this book when I asked him about the LEAN philosophy. What is great about this book is how it introduces the birth of not only the LEAN concept, but also the MASS PRODUCTION which preceded and still dominates the world of manufacturing. Insightful !
This is a great manufacturing love story in which Toyota, an automaker clearly in love with its product, decides to go after the U.S. luxury car buyer, a suitor who has repeatedly ignored its advances. To get America's attention, Toyota must first re-invent itself. It must make itself more handsome (through better styling), improve its physique (be faster, stronger and need less maintenance) and prove its financial management skill (by selling great cars for less). Because time is fleeting and the buyer has many other suitors (Mercedes Benz, Jaguar, Nissan, Volvo), Toyota must work fast before its intended lover makes an irrevocable decision and buys someone else's car. Like some other love stories, this is repetitive and suffers from some plain old sloppy editing. But it makes you want to test-drive a Lexus to see what causes such a sensation. We recommend this book to CEOs and sales and marketing executives who dream of producing revolutionary, successful products for the global marketplace. Chilton's 1991-98 Saturn Coupes Manual
The main reason why I purchased the book was to aid me in replacing the clutch on a 1995 Saturn SL. As it turns out the section in the book about clutch replacement is very weak and they should really add much more detail on how to do the repair.

Don't knock Haynes book
Have a 1992 SL2 with an A/C problem Chilton had no information (as usual) Haynes had complete diagnosis and repair!

A must have if you work on your Saturn.

A regular autobiography.
I read this book translated to portuguese, here in Brazil.Mr. Lee Iacocca tells his autobiography.There's many fun and usefull parts of this book, but there's many failures also.I'll show some of them:
1965 Mustang
August 1946, Iacocca goes to work at Ford as a student engineer.A group of students were assigned too the River Rouge plant, the largest manufacturing complex in the world.Iacocca loses interest in Engineering and fails to complete his 18-month training.Iacocca switches to Sales and marketing and makes a connection with Frank Zimmerman.In 1949, Iacocca becomes a zone manager in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvannia and trains eighteen dealers.1953, Iacocca becomes assistant sales manager of the Philadelphia district and he promotes padded dashboards as a safety feature.In 1956, Iacocca buys his first new car and creates the idea "56 for 56" meaning $56 a month for 56 monthes.McNamara takes notice and uses the idea to sale an additional 75,000 cars.Sept 29,1956, Iacocca marries Mary McCleary at St Robert's Catholic Church.1960, Charlie Beacham bring Iacocca to Dearborn as his national truck marketing manager.Dec 1960, Iacocca becomes head of the Ford division.
Very disappointing - bitter egomaniac who sounds like a pretty average leader
This book was read while I was in the mood of reading about great business autobiographies and trying to figure what leadership qualities you need to make a great company. Other books were the Gerstner book on IBM, Sam Walton's book on WalMart, Welch's book 'Winning', Jim Collin's book 'Good to Great' and 'Built to Last', Tom Peter's 'In search of excellence', etc.

above and beyond just a resource!

What a read!
Reads like a novel, but full of lessons for all modern-day managers and anyone who cares about how the American auto industry got where it is and where it's going.
The Right Men, The Right Place, The Right Time
In a week when the Nissan-Renault partnership has made a suggestion of parterning with or buying out or merging with General Motors, this book makes a timely read.
Horribly edited, if at all
Are the other reviewers here reading the same book I am, or are they friends of the author?The poor quality of this book is too glaring to avoid. An honest reader has to wonder if it is self-published. (OK, AMACOM appears not to be a vanity press, but a Scribners it ain't.)

Remarkable Turnaround

If you would like to read about how a no nonsense guy took Nissan from being extinct to one of the top automotive companies in the world you need to read this book.It has many great lessons and principles that you can apply to your everyday life or job and turn your life around!

Outbound auto logistics leadership will come of age!
Reading Holwegs' and Pil's book gives a good oversight and easy-to-digest intro not only on challenges but also the market opportunities with BTO (build-to-order), and the importance of being truly customer-driven. Sam Walton's saying goes a long way: "There is only one boss - the customer..."
A fascinating read about a fascinating industry
As a person who does research in the automotive industry I found the book to be an invaluable companion to "The machine that changed the world". The authors provide compelling analysis of the automotive supply chain and manufacturing process and its evolution in the recent years. The book is full of specific numbers, evidence and case studies which differentiate it from a number of other more anecdotal accounts of the automotive industry. This is a must read for researchers and anyone interested in knowing what is wrong with the current state of Big 3 US automotive companies.
