2-0 out of 5 stars As dry as a fast food hamburger
This could best be described as a detailed history of chain-restaurants (not just fast food). It opens with a history of 'quick-service' eating establishments in the US, taking the reader through the history of tea rooms, roadside stands, diners, and other more recent permutations. Most of the book is devoted to histories of chain-restaurant companies, which amount to something less than riveting reading. The authors have thoroughly researched the history of every restaurant chain in painstaking detail, but rarely are these written in a way that makes for a gripping story. An exception is the Indiana-based 'Snappy Service' chain (closed in 1983), which is described in a way that brings its entrepreneur to life. The last chapter describes the pattern of chain restaurants that evolved in Springfield, Illinois. The book is profusely illustrated with well over a hundred photos and dozens of maps. One glaring error appears in a series of five maps (pp. 154-157) analyzing McDonald's domination of rival chains, in which the ratio of McDonald's to competitors was inverted.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Easy Read
I liked it so much I brought a copy for a friend of mine.It tells you EVERYTHING you could ever want to know anout fast food in America.4-0 out of 5 stars Authoritative, but not light reading
I enjoyed this book much more than the previous reviewer, but he has a point.FAST FOOD, like the other titles in the "Road and American Culture" series, should not be confused with the typical book on"roadside Americana":it's nota lighthearted, heavilyillustrated volume designed to evoke nostalgic memories. If that's whatyou want, search for titles written by John Margolies or Michael KarlWitzel, or published by Chronicle Books.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Lexus Enthusiasts Dream Book
I am a huge Lexus fan and this book satisfied my every expectation! I now value my Lexus even more than I did prior to reading it. Lexus went above and beyond that of its competitors to ensure their first vehicle, the LS, would be a success and appealing to the luxury car buyer. Their precedence in approach to customer service is outstanding and I believe it to be a large part of their success today. I have a new understanding of Lexus' slogan "The Passionate Pursuit of Perfection" and have determined Lexus to be a redefinition of luxury.I highly recommend this beautiful coffee table edition book to the enthusiast, owner, or individual interested in how Lexus has come to be a leading dominate force in the U.S. luxury car market.

4-0 out of 5 stars LExus really changed the car industry
The story of LExus is a case in the history of car market ,globalization and strategic implementation.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very nice book and informative
Nice book to look at, even has a real lexus emblem on the cover! Amazing how Lexus started with $1 billion and a dream to change the luxury car market and the way dealers treat their customers. To give you an idea, GM's Saturn started with $3.5 billion investment that it still has not recouped. Before Lexus everyone, including bmw & benz owners were treated like crap and they cars sucked, I remember when a 1991 Benz 300E was 55K and a fully loaded LS was $40K.

4-0 out of 5 stars Enduring Passion
This book gave in great detail the beginnings of both Benz and Daimler up to merger in 1926 and then to 2005. It takes you through the thinking of both men and their values. You can see how and why things were done and not done through the years. The author explains the goods and the bads over the years. The pictures are great! Anyone interested in MB's or own one should read.
5-0 out of 5 stars finally
Leslie Butterfield's Enduring Passion" is astonishingly the first book about the history of Mercedes Benz brand. It provides a really broad and tensing look at how the Mercedes Benz brand developed from the foundation of the company in the 19th century untill today. Richly illustrated and with numerous anecdotes it gives a - sometimes critical - account of how the brand got where it is today. Readable!

1-0 out of 5 stars No help at all
The wiring diagrams were no help all .There was nothing about the rear washer/wiper,5-0 out of 5 stars Claus VonErpest is an example of sheer genius
As USUAL, I bought ANOTHER of Claus VonErpest's books, this one for use with my '97 Windstar. His history as a motivational speaker, Pastor of his local church, and his reputation as an unflinching speaker of NON-POPULAR (un-PC) views precedes him. It is refreshing to see a man who is so WHOLE with himself speak his mind and tell his readers to 'piss off'. In fact, he told me, one time, at a Baptism he was performing, to 'go outside and play hide and go screw myself'!!! High compliments by a man so highly regarded in so many fields. His dedication to truth and honest, keen insight should make Chilton sit up and take notice, for they have a GOLDMINE of spiritual and metaphysical thought in their employ. This book is better than the Bible. That's all I would usually say about Claus VonErpest's most recent gem of self auto repair. God blessed us with him and his views and helpful attitiudes. In fact, I'm almost sure Claus VonErpest writes, speaks and acts with God's OWN words eminating from him. I bow in shame of the knowledge that I am REALLY not fit to even whisper his name without a tear in my eye.

1-0 out of 5 stars Look at the author's opinion!
I don't give a damn how hard the author, Claus VonErpest, says he worked on this book. For an author to tell us to screw off if we don't like his book is inexcusable!I refuse to purchase anything from this author for the rest of my natural life.I am also contacting Chilton regarding the author's complete disregard for the people who have or who may purchase his work. Such an attitude indicated the true nature of the person making such comments.I highly recommend everyone avoiding the author at ALL costs. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Ultimate Bore
300 pages of BMW. It should be ultimate bliss for any car enthusiast. But it turns out to be a bit of a drag, like a car stuck in third gear, promises that it has the power to go, but just cannot deliver the power.
2-0 out of 5 stars Nice history, boring read,
As an auto industry follower, I can appreciate this book as a sort of historical reference for someone perhaps doing research. But as enjoyable reading, it falls far short. The book goes into a painfully detailed history of company events. In fact, I felt the title was a bit misleading, since it made me expect some interpretation as to why BMW is as admired as it is. Instead you basically get a chronology of events.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor workmanship and limited insights
Despite his years of experience as an auto journalist, Kiley is a sloppy writer, doesn't seem to have a clue about the mechanics and history of automobiles, and provides little in the way of new insights into what has made BMW successful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Strategic capabilities can be born unintentionnally
A book that tries to highlight the role of system formation processes that aren't deliberately planned in Toyota. It is written after the author's past works on functional analysis of existing/planned manufacturing systemsin the automobile industry and Toyota in particular. The presentationadopts the evolutionary approach considering that manufacturing systemsaren't merely a product of deliberately planning. Some of Toyota'ssuccessful routines may have originated unintentionally. Social systemsoften evolve because of unanticipated events and unplanned behavior. Thisidea is related to system emergence, a concept central to his evolutionaryframework. What the author has presented and uncovered from Toyota'sexperience can be happened in other companies or may have been taken placein other companies. This is an example of work that we cannot find easilyfor other successful companies using an evolutionary approach, not strictlyin a neo-darwinian framework. This book gives us general idea on howcompany's organizational capabilities were born and helps us understandparticularly how Toyota has created its style manufacturing system andcapabilities. A book that is worth-reading not only by scholars andstudents in management and organizational science, but also by those beingactors in companies' building capabilities.

1-0 out of 5 stars Limited Electrical
The book barely mentioned the trip/mileage computer much less what to do to troubleshoot, remove and replace or what else might cause a blank screen.I was very disappointed that even the wiring diagrams showed nothing concerning this unit. Also to try and track down the circuit involved the book gave no help on basics such as the fuses involved.

2-0 out of 5 stars Waste of Money
The manual covers too many vehicles in general with little detail for specifics. It's difficult to find what your looking for.If you need a manual, try the dealer. I've had bad luck with Chilton in the past, I should have known.

2-0 out of 5 stars Easy does it...
I recently purchased a 1997 Expedition, but couldn't find the owners manual.I ordered this book with hopes of clarifying some basic information.I think this book has quite a bit of data, but it is hard to read, index, and otherwise unfriendly. For example, the fuse box section does not tell you which fuses relate to which piece of equipment, making troubleshooting tough. The section on sizes and capacities is so small and marked with footnotes, I still don't know what size fuel tank I have. Also, too many models covered in this manual that aren't important to me, and too few pictures.I'm gonna try the Haynes version. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very Nice
While I would like to see more real pics, the drawings do a fine job of identifying the various pumps.Think the glossary could be expanded to include more terms. All in all, I am glad to have the book in my library.

1-0 out of 5 stars An Ilustrated Guide to Gas Pumps
We were very disappointed with the book.We were hoping it would have pictures of old gas pumps and how they should be painted. All it shows is old gas pumps but most are black and white and seem to be drawings instead of actual pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Stuff
I'm moving out of state next year and won't be taking my car with me.Life will probably be more difficult in some ways but it's worth it.When you read about cars and study about them and think about them, it's really unbelievable the amount of death, destruction, and suffering that they've caused over the last hundred years.I've read a lot of anti-car books and this is one of the better ones. It's very thorough while not being too dry or academic like some of the others.Read this book and you'll learn things that will surprise you, like how much money it really costs a society when it uses cars as its main form of transportation. And don't forget perhaps the greatest tragedy of all.Cars gave rise to one of the lowest forms of life that the human race has ever known - the car salesman!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book!
This book inspired me to bite the bullet and become car-lite (I live a little too far from town to achieve car-free just yet). It has a lot of exciting examples of how being car-free and car-lite can lead to a more pleasant lifestyle, as well as motivation why it's a good thing to do. Katie's own example is also inspiring, as she has significantly reduced car usage while living in a rural area in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, a place with legendary winters. Now when I get whiny about putting on my rain suit in the winter here in Northern California and want to jump in my car instead of riding, I think about Katie and her husband biking in the snow of the U.P.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating look at the man who saved Nissan
Shift is the memoirs of Carlos Ghosn (rhymes with "phone"), who masterminded the turnaround of the failing Japanese automotive giant, Nissan Motor Company, back to profitability.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Read
Mr. Ghosn is no doubt a different type of manager, and the book does a good job of differentiating his strong skill areas.

4-0 out of 5 stars Must-read for auto-enthusiasts
This autobiography by stellar auto executive Carlos Ghosn is part family history, part memoir and, it must be acknowledged, part corporate public relations exercise. Ghosn covers his international childhood, student days and working experience at Michelin and Renault, but the meat of the content concerns his remarkable achievements at Nissan. Ghosn's account of his work is clear and interesting, if somewhat superficial. He rarely offers original or striking insights. He tells readers what he did and sometimes why, but neither the "what" nor the "why" seem to break new ground. Ghosn may be a man of action unaccustomed to reflection, or he may be a private man who keeps his deeper conclusions to himself. We recommend his book to automotive industry readers, because it is a memoir of an industry leader. Others might enjoy the occasional memorable flash of insight - such as Ghosn's observations on Japan's traditional and somewhat illusory "consensus" approach to management, or his comment that Japanese business leaders do not know how to take the actions that circumstances demand. Of course, anybody else's actions might look a little tentative in the face of Ghosn's decisive career path. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Enough
Maynard does a splendid job analyzing Detroits's current problems but ignores some important history. The industry as a whole was badly damaged by the great depression and later even more so by the FDR, The NRA, and the new dealers. Once upon a time American cars were like their Japanese and European counterparts in the sense they were precision machines loaded with engineering inovations, Cadillac offered 3 engines in 1931. V-8, V-12, V-16. By 1941 Cadillacs were nothing more than Chevrolets in basic design butgrown longer, wider, and fatter. The American auto industry in the 1920's & 30'swas like Europe's auto industry today building all different kinds of cars in all different price ranges. There were cars like the Doble and Stanley that were steam powered,in 1935 there were about 20 different car makers other than the big 3. The Depression coupled with sky high New Deal taxes destroyed the fine car makers like The Pierce Arrow Motor Car Company of Buffalo NY, Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg leaving the way for the Europeans to grab this important market starting in the 1950's after the economy began to recover from the war. Low cost car makers like Studebaker were hated by the UAW because they could not afford to pay the same wages Ford, or GM could. Ther biggest part of this whole tragedy is the art of making, desiging, well crafted cars died with the Pre-WWII generation From 1946 - 1973American carswerebeen big, heavy, rolling pieces of costume jewelry. When oil prices after 1973made building the cars in this manner no longer possible, Detroit has struggled since as to what to do. No longer able to fool people with cheaply made cars disguised to look well made under tons of steel, they have had to re-invent the way they build cars. To Detroit's credit they have made some progress over the years. The problem they faced in the 80's was they had not had to build anything remotely resembling a sophisticated engine in over 50 years. Up to the early 80'sthe 1928-37 Indiana made Duesenberg Model Jstill held the title of most technologicly advanced American car, when Detroits new front wheel driveengines could not match Toyota fuel economy they had to remove weight off the cars to make them lighter, since most consumers know nothing of engineering and only judge cars by what they see and feel, American cars were dismissed as being Tin Cans on four wheels, to quote my mother. In recent years Detroit has made some progress. Cadillac seems on the mend, the XLR is a wonderful car but like the Allante before it, way over priced. The new Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky are really nice but GM blundered big time dropping Oldsmobile.Ford has not been doing so well, the new Mustang is a 1967 Mustang front end and 1970 Mustang rear-end redone in plastic. YUK ! Mercury is almost dead. The new Lincolns are hideous. Chrysler has benefited from it's association with Damiler Benz. The Chrylsler 300 is the nicest sedan in it's price range. Time will tell if things turn around. The U.S. Auto industry has been written off before and has come back.

5-0 out of 5 stars Maynard is the Oracle of Detroit
Here we are, March 2006 and reading this book for the second time will give one chills! Wagoner had a road map predicting the demise of GM and yet stayed the course. This book combined with The Toyota Way makes the unfortunate End of Detroit painfully clear and often sheds more light on cultural paradigm than business sense!

4-0 out of 5 stars An alternate title: Big 3 Execs Blow It
I was disappointed when I first started reading Ms. Maynard's book.I had expected to delve into the details of the manufacturing process and appreciate Japan's robotic genius. If you are interested in the technology then look elsewhere.

2-0 out of 5 stars VERY BASIC "COMPLETE GUIDE"
AS SOMEONE WHO HAS BEEN OUT OF THE SPORT FOR 10 YEARS AND LOOKING TO GET BACK IN, I BOUGHT THIS BOOK EXPECTING MORE. THE BOOK STARTS OUT WITH A GOOD HISTORY OF THE 3 WHEELED ATV, BUT DOESN'T ELABORATE TOO MUCH ON QUADS. (WHAT ABOUT THE MID 80'S SUZUKI'S - QUAD SPORT/QUAD RACER?)ANOTHER DOWN FALL OF THE BOOKIS THAT IT STRONGLY FOCUSES ON UTILITY ATV'S AND RARELY MENTIONS SPORT MODELS. AS FAR AS THE MAINTENANCE SECTION OF THE BOOK... IT .... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Implementation Book
Kanban Made Simple is a great book to help in teaching people how to implement Kanbans. While many people conceptually understand Kanban, they do not understand all the elements that go into sizing the kanban and into the design of the kanban. This book addresses all these elements (sizing, type, visual management, rollout, and batch size reduction)in a step by step method.I recommend it to all my clients.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good BUT
Book is well organized.Chapters 3 (Data Collection) and 4 (Sizing the Kanban)need more detail.Overall, the book does take you through the process.CD is a waste of time. All the files are in PDF format. If these were in Word or Excel, it would be much easier to use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!
Visit any healthy manufacturing operation and you'll see a buzz of bewildering activity - parts being moved on overhead cranes, raw materials being wheeled in, line operators checking their production schedules before they change the line over to their next product. Those production schedules, as this book suggests, can really be a hindrance. Operators become dependent on them, although the schedules may not accurately reflect customer demand. The solution? Kanban, which is based on having a communication system right on the factory floor that communicates key indications of customer behavior - buying, ordering, canceling - directly to the workers themselves. Production activity, therefore, is actually scheduled based on customer demand rather than on past expectations, with the advantage that you hold less inventory and operate more effectively. This book (which comes with a compact disc of implementation directions) gives clear insight into this powerful scheduling system employed efficiently by Toyota and other world-class companies. We highly recommend it to executives, managers and supervisors of companies that earn their living by making widgets more successfully. ... Read more
