5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful and entertaining book
This book is fascinating, even for people like me who aren't especially interested in cars. I picked it up at my grandpa's house and couldn't put it down. More than a "car book," Ford Century brings in a lot of the history that Ford grew up in - from hula hoops to hot rods - and reminds its readers how Ford was there for it all. This is a beautiful book, as well, with great images and nostalgiac pictures. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Massive Panaoramic Sweep of Ford:Man,Cars,Company
Tying in with Ford's 100th celebration is this fine chronicle of this influential name and continuing legacy in so many areas of the past century.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A welcome Addition to any VW enthusist's Library
This book shows many photos I haven't seen before in similar publications. The early days in the factory with split rear window beetles on assembly lines going in all directions.
5-0 out of 5 stars VW Beetle revisited in an interesting way
The story of the Beetle never changes, but in this case, it gets more interesting to read. This book contains the production history of the "People's Car" combined with a section called Volkswagen by the numbers, which details year-by-year model changes. VW Beetle is a must read for anyone that doesn't know the story of Volkswagens' rise from the ashes of W.W.II. Author Ryan Lee Price makes the story as interesting as a novel and doesn't get stuck on minor details that tend to make this chapter in Volkswagen history tedious. The first nine chapters follow the Beetle from Porsche's dream to Hitler's reality. The Beetle then goes off to war and is rescued by the British. The tale continues as the Beetle crosses the ocean and comes to America. This rocky ride makes you realize that we are very lucky that the Beetle ended up staying on our shores.2-0 out of 5 stars There are better books than this
I found glaring errors just leafing through the book.Read more

The car has shaped the very fabric of American society, and its history shows how decisions at all levels of government and society have been shaped by the auto. Volti's history covers the technology behind the car's development, plus the accompanying roads, traffic laws, gas production, and regulation which accompanied fostering of the auto as a way of American life. 4-0 out of 5 stars An Informative and Interesting read
The book, The American Automobile Industry, includes sections on the origins of the automobile, the American Contribution to mass production and industrial organization, the rise of compact/small cars, as well as other topics. The book focuses mainly on history and goes into detail about how the major American automobile manufacturers came to be. It shows the rise of both GM and Ford Motor Company. The book shows in great detail how the modern automobile came to be in the United States. I would reccomend this book to anyone interested in learning about the history of the automobile industry in the United States. I conducted a series of readability tests and the results were as follows:Passive sentences: 0% Flesch Reading Ease: 37.5 Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level: 12. 5-0 out of 5 stars How Did We Get Into This Mess
Of all of the books that I have read pertaining to railroad history, "Getting There" is head and shoulders above all the rest. The author provides a well written and generally balanced account of the competition between rail and highway transportation in the United States from about the 1920's forward.5-0 out of 5 stars How highways, with massive gov't subsidies, beat railroads
A well-written readable, and mostly objective picture of how highways, through massive government investment through theconstruction of the interstate highway system, steadily became the dominant mode oftransportation in the US.The author concludes that, with deregulation andimprovements to Amtrak, railroads do have a promising future despite thehistoric imbalance. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wartime Strikes, Pathbreaking Labor History
Martin Glaberman, a former auto-worker and professor emeritus at Wayne State University has written an astounding reinterpretation of American labor history during World War II. The writing is engaging and the analysis is compelling. In contrast to much labor history written during the last thirty years, Glaberman dwells less on what working people did NOT do, and more upon what they actually DID. He finds a startling level of creativity and self-activity on the shop-floor level, and argues that rank-and-file workers, more than politicians or union leaders, were the real catalysts of social change during the period. A very timely book for building and studying the labor movement. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Invention of the automobile industry
This outstanding book is not just about a make of cars which is represented in most museum collections. It is about the invention of the automobile industry.A compelling story well told.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great document of Upstate (NY) Industrial/Cultural History
Great fun to read about an industrial manufacturer located 'way off' the main path of industrial America -- in Upstate NY!I worked @ GMC Truck & Coach in 1966 so I am fascinated with auto/truck assembly-line detail(several pictures of the inside of the factory in Syracuse). But a largepart of the book is devoted to the individuals who ran the firm as well asinterviews with lowliest shop floor seasonal workers. The company survivedand briefly thrived in a hostile environment -- geographically &economically.I would have loved to see photos included of the car'slaminated wood frame! Also, toward the 1930's when they used bodies fromReo (in Lansing Mi) was a real inspiration in 'modular assembly'!

5-0 out of 5 stars Interest to any
Bucyrus International has built heavy excavating machinery for over a hundred years: it began in 1880 building equipment and became the leading supplier of draglines, shovels and drills for the mining industry, purchasing competitors and today building about 90 percent of the walking draglines in existence. Mergers, pivotal changes, and construction techniques are detailed along with plenty of color and vintage photos in BUCYRUS, of interest to any in the equipment industry.

5-0 out of 5 stars McDonald's Years of Struggle with General Motors
Until reading this book, I was wholly unaware of efforts by General Motors' lawyers to prevent the publication of Sloan's memoir My Years with General Motors which is generally considered one of the most important business books ever written. McDonald was Sloan's ghost writer (hence the dual meaning of the book's title) and provides a compelling account of how and why the book was finally published in 1963. McDonald suggests that a study in 1921 (discussed in Sloan's memoir) recommended "covering" all prospective buyers of automobiles by designing, manufacturing, and marketing a complete line for various "price steps." In that event, GM lawyers feared, federal regulatory agencies would become involved and seek to dismantle what could be perceived as a monopoly. In 1962, McDonald initiated a lawsuit against GM. He was at that time still employed by Fortune magazine. Almost immediately, Time Inc. "entered the game", fearing loss of GM advertising. It would be a disservice to both McDonald and to those who read this review to reveal what happened next. To my surprise, the book became a "page turner" and remained so to its conclusion. McDonald tells a lively story with colorful characters, a complicated plot, all manner of crises and conflicts, subtle (and not-so-subtle) manipulations, and conflicts of interests while -- along the way -- examining a legal system exploited but which ultimately prevailed. A great read. ... Read more
