5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book to buy as a gift
There were so many great reviews for this book that echoed exactly how I felt about it, but I would like to add that I think that this book would make a great gift. It is a very simple to understand, straight forward book to buy for a friend or family member to heighten their awareness of all of these very important issues. I was so impressed that I watch it in my wish list and buy used copies for friends several times a year.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow
The title pretty much sums it up. This book was...superb and it doesn't sugarcoat, either. What shocked me most was the chart on page 70 of this book showing minimum wages in other countries (4 cents an hour in Burma!!!!) versus some figures of the head honchos of the corporate world (Walmart's Walton family, according to this, is worth 67.5 billion). It will definitely make you look at the brand names in a different way. I know for sure I will not buy anything from Victoria's secret anymore, nor will I set foot in Walmart anymore unless I'm absolutely desperate for something I don't think I can get anywhere else. So be smart, pick up this book, learn a thing or two, and fight this corporate crap. You'll be much happier you did.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent info, but it doesn't deliver the "how-to."
A fascinating, well-made, beautifully-printed gem of a book! Stuffed with color photos, eye-catching graphics, and the kind of quotes and data that makes you think, "Ooh, I gotta paperclip this page!" I'd like to buy a copy for many other people, if I knew they'd read it.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK AND GREAT HISTORY
Four years later I re read this book (written 1999) and found it to be just as or perhaps more worrisome. The authors have done a great job of offering a cafeteria approach to a foundational understanding of the bio weapon threat.Yes, there are some limitations as others have described. The authors have not described in great detail the US bio weapons program (it is rather unlikely that your neighborhood will be attacked by the US), other authors have gone into much greater depth on individual programs and many of the sources are confidential. The authors were aware of these issues and took pains to both describe the process and to illuminate the limitations.
4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read & understand
By coincidence I was reading this book as the news about the death of Dr David Kelly became known. Dr Kelly features very prominently in this book, and its a pity that such a fine individual met such a tragic end. Tom Mangold's book pulls together an excellent story over the decades. Very easy to read and to understand. Would be nice to see a revised edition with more information about Iraq post-2001.

5-0 out of 5 stars SOOOO SCARY!!!!!!
I did not think I was going to like this book because it was written before 9-11 and therefore I thought was out-of-date.UNTRUE!Although this book concentrates on biological warfare and not on airplanes used as missiles, there were people warning about terrorists making an attack on this nation long before it happened.I live near Houston and the first chapter describes a hypothetical scenario that was played out by the military involving some people from the Iraqi government holding hostages at Bush International Airport and dousing them with several biological agents. In a few days, the city of Houston was reduced to martial law according to the forecasts. It gave me chills. This is a very good book if you want to know what our enemies can do without using airplanes to crash into buildings. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for several reasons
The author has a background and contacts in intelligence circles. This is information that is not only interesting, but should get out beyond the readers of this book.Gertz carefully details with a lot of specifics how Russia, China, Germany, France, North Korea, and more work together to supply rogue nations and terrorist groups with weaponry. This is a must read if you want to get a broad horizon on the threats of the world today. This is the kind of information you won't get in the news, because it's too granular and complicated for the average newspaper reader, or television audience.

3-0 out of 5 stars This is a speach, not a study
This book reads like a national discourse rather than a political and security analysis. It is no secret that other nations are competing with the United States over diverging interests around the world. France and Russia had signed oil contracts with Saddam's Iraq prior to the American war in 2003 and it was only natural for them to stand up to defend their interests before the world community and in the UN.

Editorial Review

Most people, upon hearing gunfire, would run away and hide. Conflict photojournalists have the opposite reaction: they actually look for trouble, and when they find it, get as close as possible and stand up to get the best shot. This thirst for the shot and the seeming nonchalance to the risks entailed earned Greg Marinovich, Joao Silva, Ken Oosterbroek, and Kevin Carter the moniker of the Bang-Bang Club. Oosterbroek was killed in township violence just days before South Africa's historic panracial elections. Carter, whose picture of a Sudanese child apparently being stalked by a vulture won him a Pulitzer Prize, killed himself shortly afterwards. Another of their posse, Gary Bernard, who had held Oosterbroek as he died, also committed suicide.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
Great book, i've read most of the bio/autobio's about the old guys, Bob Capa, HCB ect and this is a whole new game. These guys were in my opinion, better than their older counterparts, the risks seem higher and with less payoff.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read
This is a disturbing book. After the first three chapters I put it down and only picked it up again two months later. Perhaps I was just emotionally at low ebb the first time, but the brutal honesty of the descriptions in those first chapters got to me. Even though I am a South African and lived through that eventful period, I was unprepared for the honesty of the authors. At the second attempt I finished the book and am glad that I did as it is really well worth the read.5-0 out of 5 stars Five Stars
This is an exciting account of South Africa, as observed through the lenses of four "conflict photojournalists", roughly between the time of Mandela's release to South Africa's first non-racial elections. There is a gripping, raw and ultimately, compassionate, quality about the writing, and the photos powerfully convey the horrors that this country went through.Equally enlightening are the insights into conflict photography, and the moral issues that arise by being a witness (and recorder) of human suffering. This book would interest anyone who's ever wondered how conflict photographers get into those crazy situations, the risks they took (sometimes fatal), and the adrenaline-laced thoughts that rush through their minds. ... Editorial Review

In 1897, under order of First Zionist Congress president Theodor Herzl, two Austrian rabbis traveled to Palestine to explore the possibility of locating a Jewish state there. "The bride is beautiful," the rabbis cabled Herzl, "but she is married to another man." That "other man" was the Palestinian Arab nation, long established in the region as a political entity. Undeterred, Herzl pressed on with his program of emigration, ignoring Palestine's existing occupants and creating in the process what came to be known as the "Arab question."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely illuminating
Avi Shlaim is a rare authority of the kind who honestly portrays the truth. He meticulously unravelled the knots in history and came out with the true events that shaped Israel and its relation towards Arabs since 1948. He deconstructed the history by analyzing many documents and showed how the and why the Israeli leaders behaved and reacted to scenarios, how was their interrelation, how they perceived the security facts and what was their relation to the military commanders. I was looking for this kind of book for long and finally found it in Tanya Reinhert's book (see my review on this book). He showed that how true is Kissinger's aphorism about Israel is true: "Israel has no foreign policy, it has only domestic politics." It was so true. Although he showed that USA has rather balanced policy toward Israel, at least till the 1990s, but from a lay person's perspective thats hardly the case. How come Israel has so many F16s and Pakistan had to burgain for years to buy F16s ! Anyway this book was very educative for me, it helped me to learn objectively about the Arab-Israel conflict, and thus to counter the stereotypes of many of my Egyptian friends, for example.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent slice of history
While the pro-zionist lobby (I know them well, being a Sabra) will attempt to shred any book that doesn't present Israel as an angel and the Arab world as devils, this is a fair book and will fill a good chunk of the white space in anyone's knowledge of the region. The author attempts to explain how one founding principle determined the behavior of Israel's dominant leaders over the decades, and he succeeds. The author's conclusion is that Jabotinsky had a workable and realistic theory (build the figurative iron wall, then negotiate for peace), but that many of Israel's leaders did not have the qualities necessary to complete the second part of that theory. The author does a good job of examining these leaders, delving into what made them tick and how that affected policy. Rabin was one leader who might have made Jabotinsky's theory work, as the author shows, but he did not survive the Jewish right wing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Objective look at recent history
Avi Shlaim has done an outstanding job of presenting the brief history of Zionism and the formation of the State of Israel.Although he tends to editorialize his own perception of history, Dr. Shlaim, nevertheless, remains true to the facts. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars So Slanted, I Couldn't Believe It
Essentially, this book is in the same league as Michael D. Evans' "Showdown with Nuclear Iran": biased, bigoted and on many accounts, baseless. First they sold us Iraq with the claims that the then leader was a kakistocrat. Now, the same people are pushing for a war with Iran, claiming yet again that that country's present leader is worse than Lucifer. Timmerman is so hypocritical in trying to be 'fair' to his subject, it's laughable. There are better books on this subject and you can safely skip this slanted creed.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Coming Nclear Showdown
Kenneth Timmerman's book reveals all of what the media failed to do over the past 15 plus years. Now we have a serious international problem involving several countries including Iran, Iraq, Libya, Pakistan, Syria and North Korea. I have published internationally on the history of weapons of mass destruction during the mid 90's. Not only has our Government allowed the previously mentioned countries to take the crucial steps for atomic and other WMD development, but the IAEA was a partner in these efforts. Western Europe and the EU profited greatly from the very questionable atomic related sales.
4-0 out of 5 stars Solid Account
Patrick Clawson said well, inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency have uncovered one hidden Iranian nuclear program after another during the last two and a half years. Tehran has now acknowledged having concealed (for eighteen years) a wide range of nuclear activities. Some of them have few peaceful applications but are directly useful for nuclear weapons. This surprising nuclear progress fits a context, for the Iranian regime has also tested long-range missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads, and its Supreme Leader has proclaimed that Israel is a cancer that should be excised by being wiped off the map. 4-0 out of 5 stars some good material here
Like all anthologies, this is a bit of a mixed bag, but overall it is strong. Even the weaker peices are OK. Some of the essays are just summaries of the history of nonviolent action in some geographical region. Sort of interesting, but I found those pieces to have too much information crammed into too little space. Fortunately, most of the articles are case studies of particular nonviolent campaigns or movements. Some of them are simply narratives--it's not clear what lessons are to be drawn. Most of these case studies analyze the movement or campaign in question in such a way that activists can draw some valuable lessons from them, although in some cases the lessons are left implicit instead of being spelled out, which is kind of annoying. These lessons include both ideas on the application of nonviolent tactics and examinations about how these tactics have diffused from one group or region to another. Finally, there are a few more theoretical pieces, including the conclusion by Zunes and Kurtz, which I thought was the best thing in the book. They critique much nonviolent theory as being overly voluntarist--focusing too much on what social activists do and not enough on how the social and political contexts they are operating create different opportunities and constraints. Zunes and Kurtz argue for a balanced approach that analyzes systems of power and tries to understand how nonviolent activists can best put pressure on them, which is going to differ immensely depending on the larger context. Zunes and Kurtz also examine why nonviolent tactics have increasingly come to be favored over armed struggle--but also the ways in which nonviolent activists have needed to continually innovate as governments have gotten wise and adopted effective means of diffusing the power of nonviolent activism (means that range from making it easy to get permits for marches to paramilitary death squads, depending on geographical region). Overall, this is a valuable source of information on nonviolent movements, what has worked and what hasn't.

5-0 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking research
I've worked and taught in the field of peacebuilding for 25 years and consider this book the single most important research that has been done in the field. Varshney breaks new ground in conducting indepth research into why some cities in India into fell into violence and some did not during times of high national tension. 1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing!
Varshney had the opportunity to examine the Hindu-Muslim divide in India using fresh glasses, and he has failed at it. His book is a litany of hackneyed generalizations and simplistic arguments.

5-0 out of 5 stars a work of excellence
Varshneys research is particulary impressive because of the concise research method that he upholds. I am pleased that he has studied both peaceful and violent cities--giving his research model a basis for comparison. I have purchased20 copies of Ethnic Conflict and Civic life and have circulated the work among my friends.Varshney's work gives us hope for world peace. this is the work of utter genius.very impressive research. particulary interesting was his intricate methodology of janwars in conflict. I highly recomment this book. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to comprehension of bin Laden
This is the third book I've read on terrorism and was the best by far. Not only does it take the reader through the important points of bin Laden's life and the historical events that surround them, but the author also analyzes the larger context within world politics. I particularly enjoyed the analysis of the strategic importance of Stinger missiles in the past and the future.
1-0 out of 5 stars Know your facts before reading this book
Warning, before reading this book make sure you are well schooled in the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, US involvement with Somalia, the Persian Gulf War, and Islam. The more you know about these subjects the more you will realize that Bergen interjects his political opinions throughout the book with side comments; by selectively adding some facts and leaving out others; and by the clever arrangements of facts.Bergen is biased against the US and eerily; the net affect is some sort of weird admiration for OBL.
5-0 out of 5 stars This Was Good....But Bin Laden's Mistress

3-0 out of 5 stars If it Ain't Baroque, Don't FIx it?
This book is ambitious, but disjointed. Another reviewer calls it "baroque" a description that works as well as any. Some sections would have worked better as shorter, more focused works. The epic scale is the product of poor editing choices, and a marketing instinct that a weighty tome would sell in the days after 9/11, neither of which make the macro-hsitorical thesis of a "long war" any more plausible (though note even Bobbit must be annoyed by the Bush Administration's misappropriation of his coinage to describe the war against terror).
1-0 out of 5 stars The mountains heave in childbirth ....
.... and a little mouse is born. A flaccid bladder of utter banality inflated by the hot air of middle-brow legalism and obscurantist prose. No exploration of any depth or detail is carried out of the disruption wrought by a market-dependent way of life on the ecological, anthropological, cultural, social, political and psychological fibres that hold together the world's various societies, or on the fragility and volatility of the global market itself, which, of course, is portrayed as a fait accompli. Thus there is simply no contextual platform for the author's analysis, and, despite the standard air of portent, no clear picture of what law and militarism can or might actually do in the near future, and we are left non the wiser about what the course of history might actually BE. This work is fairly indicative of the mainstream American understanding of history; my advice is that they take a break from making it, or we are all in big trouble.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Unique New Analysis of International Relations
Phillip Bobbitt has created something very rare in the realm of International Relations: an entirely unique new idea. For those students of history and current events who have grown accustomed to the accepted world views: Realism, Idealism - internationalism vs. isolationism; this new entry will provide a welcome and refreshing perspective.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just another fanatic, albeit an articulate one
I am reading a bunch of stuff on the Middle East and the various issues and conflicts in the region, and I came across several names often enough that it seemed reasonable I should read something by each of them. One of the names was Edward W. Said, whose book Orientalism was apparently considered very influential when it was released about 20 years ago. I found this other book more current, and bought it instead. The current volume is a collection of newspaper articles (most editorials) that were published between 1995 and 2002. The majority of them first saw print in the years 1996-8. They are, whatever else you think of them, quite well-written and articulate, and the author makes his points convincingly, provided you accept the underpinnings of what he says. Therein lies almost all of my difficulties with this book.
3-0 out of 5 stars Very one-sided
Read also a thorough review of Said in Shoher's book Samson Blinded: A Machiavellian Perspective on the Middle East Conflict. Shoher shows many factual errors and contradictions in Said's arguments.

5-0 out of 5 stars The truth may be dark and depressing, and yet true
This book starts where Said's "Peace and its Discontents" ends, so read that book first. It's indeed a gloomy picture. Arafat's puppet administration sinks deep into corruption whilst steaming in impotent helplessness, as the so-called peace process becomes a transparent tactic to block all real Palestinian aspirations for a viable state in the occupied territories. The Israelis and the US continue to block all real statehood negotiations until 'violence stops', overlooking the crucial fact that Palestinian violence is largely a reaction to the brutal Israeli occupation, and is impossible for Arafat to control while the Israeli settlement and occupation policy continues. So things remain in a deadlock. And meanwhile Said's health deteriorates.Sad indeed, but unfortunately it's the truth of the situation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book on the Most-Overlooked Facet of Business Today:Cultural Differences
As a cross-cultural consultant and graduate business professor, I highly recommend the sixth edition of the MCD book by Harris, Moran, and Moran.I currently utilize the new edition in both my online and onground MBA courses which deal primarily with international management and leadership issues.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference book for Cross-cultural Affairs
The book "Managging Cultural Differences" is a very good reference book for cross-cultural affairs. First of all, the book creates awareness about culture and subsequent cultural differences in an increasingly global world. It also offers the reader an introduction to the concepts of culture and beliefs and most importantly gives a guide on how to behave in foreign countries.

5-0 out of 5 stars Creating Imperial Reality
In its June 9, 2005, issue The New York Review of Books published an article entitled "The Secret Way to War" in which Mark Danner reviewed and interpreted the recently released secret memo summarizing the main points of a meeting between British Prime Minister Tony Blair, cabinet members, and senior government officials held at 10 Downing Street on July 23, 2002.The book reprints this article as well as critical letters by Knight Ridder Bureau Chief John Walcott and Los Angeles Times reporter Michael Kinsley with the author's response to each. The author adds an afterword and an appendix containing the full text of the Downing Street Memo and seven other British documents pertaining to it.
3-0 out of 5 stars Okay...a short book on the memo
This was good but I would not necessarily recommend everyone read it.You can read this in one night.

5-0 out of 5 stars The mechanisms of manipulation
If you have missed Mark Danner's articles on the Downing Street Memo in _The New York Review of Books_, here is your chance to learn a little more about the beginning of the war and how, in political thinking, the (wished for) effect can precede the (invented) cause. This book is particularly enlightening now, when the withdrawal of the American military from Iraq finally begins to be discussed. We are told that a withdrawal -- even a gradual and well-planned one - will eventually lead to terrorist attacks on America. Where is the proof? Mark Danner's book reveals the mechanisms of manipulation of public opinion behind this war: we are made to listen to Fear, not to Reason. To be sure, Reason makes mistakes, but Blind Fear's mistakes can be disastrous. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Introduction to this disturbing aspect of modern international affairs
Being an International Relations student about to embark on a years study on this subject I was looking for a solid grounding on which to begin my study and this provided a perfect answer. Singer uses simple dialogue and logical progression in his publication to provide information on the recruting of child soldiers, what they are subjected to in the field, the difficulty of soldiers facing children, the worst culprits, reintegration of soldiers and proposed methods of ending this aspect of modern warfare.
4-0 out of 5 stars Chilling, Sad, Provocative, Scholarly
The Author writes about a chilling new chapter in post-modern warfare. It is a very objective and scholarly work that covers in comprehensive detail the underlying causes, recruitment, implications and response to "Child Soldiers". The author calls this a "new Doctrine" and not only covers the problems, techniques, tactics and procedures; but, also offers lessons learned and suggestions for countering this new dimension of warfare.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Changing Face of Warfare
The face of warfare has changed dramatically in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. In the first years of the new millennium, we rarely find state-led armies clashing across the boarders of sovereign nations.Rather, most wars occur within the boarders of an autonomous state.Civil and guerrilla conflicts have replaced the international and colonial wars of the recent past. All too often, the armies fueling these new internal struggles for power are composed of children.
