Editorial Review

Most American conservatives take it as an article of faith that the less governmental involvement in affairs of the market and pocketbook the better. The rich do not, whatever they might say--for much of their wealth comes from the "power and preferment of government." So writes Kevin Phillips, the accomplished historian and one-time Washington insider, in this extraordinary survey of plutocracy, excess, and reform. "Laissez-faire is a pretense," he argues; as the wealth of the rich has grown, so has its control over government, making politics a hostage of money. Examining cycles of economic growth and decline from the founding days of the republic to the recent collapse of technology stocks, Phillips dispels notions of trickle-down wealth creation, pricks holes in speculative bubbles, and decries the ever-increasing "financialization" of the economy--all of which, he argues, have served to reduce the well-being of ordinary Americans and government alike. Highly readable for all its charts and graphs, Phillips's book offers a refreshing--and, of course, controversial--blend of economic history and social criticism. His conclusions won't please all readers, but just about everyone who comes to his pages will feel hackles rising. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Intriguing in Places, Sermonizing in Others
Kevin Phillips is not a bad man. He genuinely has an interest in the admittedly complex topic of economics, wealth consolidation and its effects on democratic institutions. The problem with Phillips' book is not that he has shed his Republican affiliation to take up the cause of progressive crusading, but that it often shifts from the gripping to the mind-numbingly technical without warning.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Game!
The middle class is not democratizing economically or politically. The middle class is not taking control of its money and instead the middle is rapidly transferring money from its savings into the massive market profits for the super rich. The middle class should immediately abandon any transfers from savings into the stock market and preserve their wealth, but instead they will be lured into hedge funds and mutual markets speculating that someday they will be super rich.
5-0 out of 5 stars a modern day truth teller
I've always been impressed with the honesty and integrity of Kevin Phillips. Coming out of the conservative movement, Phillips nevertheless places truth, and a deep concern for the well being of American democracy, well over and above mere partisanship. The current corrupt leadership in Washington DC could learn a thing or two here, where Phillips turns a critical eye to the age old tension between democracy and the tendency toward an oligarchy. Lately, it seems that democracy has been the loser in this struggle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book incredibly timely...
With the onset of an election year, Richard Hofrichter's book Social Justice and Health is incredibly timely and important.Despite being the 2nd richest nation in the world (only Luxembourg has a higher average GDP), Americans have one of the worst health profiles. The contributers to Hofrichter's book points out the many reasons why this is the case:The USA has the greatets proportion of citizens in low paying jobs, has the greatest number of poor people, and the greatest gap between rich and poor. This condition is made worse by its especially low spending on social infrastructure and on services that support the citizenry.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Womens way through the 12 steps
This is a great starter book for any women, in any type of recovery. This is my third copy of this book in twelve years I use it as way to help me help, the women and girls I sponsor.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not just a rewrite
Clearly written and with a real understanding of female approach to a 12 step program, this book is useful for women in recovery. I think it also has something to say to those who are seeking an approach to deal with other issues, such as emotional or anxiety disorders, etc. In any case, it expands on the basic themes of the program and helps expand their meaning to fit the different viewpoint many women bring to the process. I liked the compassionate tone; the forgiving and self-accepting meaning of the original message is only amplified in the author's discussions of the steps. It makes you feel as if you have another ally in your work. Well worth reading, and I'd even say it has something to say to you even if you are not in a recovery program.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works for us, too!(Group Therapy)

5-0 out of 5 stars A Landmark Work
Learning Disabilities and Life Stories is a landmark work. It is one of the few books that provides the 'insider's' perspective on the complex, controversial problem of learning disabilities. Thirteen college students vividly recount how LD affected their academic, social and emotional lives, and how they overcame these problems. Some of the students also suffered from ADHD, emotional problems (i.e. anxiety), and social problems (i.e. stigma). Although these students are probably not representative of the entire population of LD students, their stories make a wonderful contribution to the understanding of LD.

4-0 out of 5 stars StoriesFrom the Heart
From someone working in the school system for the past 15 years, this book, Learning Disibilities and Life Stories, touched me more than any other book on the subject. Reading the personal accounts of former students with LD, they pointed out many shortcomings of our school systems throughout the country. In reading the book, one can hope that we as educators, counselors, psychologists, and parents, will help educate all who are involved in the lives of children, especially those who are crying out for our help in the classroom. Hopefully we are changing the way we look at disabilities of any kind. This book is a constant reminder that if we do not work to help children with these disabilities, we will be losing a generation of potentially contributing adults to society. What a great tribute to these children, who are now educating us on the plight of being lost in our classrooms. I plan to share this book with fellow educators, and parents. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!
As a school psychologist (ages 4 - 13), I have been looking for a book like this for years! It's much more elaborate than the standard books on child development and it's based on the latest research rather than on theories. It provides me with a rich fund of information that I use when assessing a child, especially younger children with social or emotional issues.
5-0 out of 5 stars The ESSENTIAL book on development!
There are far too many books out there on development that drown readers with boring facts and research statistics. This is the first book I have read in 10 years that is interesting, clinically sounds, easy to read, and very informative. Douglas Davies writes a book that is a must for any practitioner/therapist interested in working with kids on developmental issues. His book gives a comprehensive view of the various stages kids go through and the clinical issues that arise. It is excellent! You can easily relate to what is written and actually apply it to work with kids! Stop reading and buy this book! ... Read more

The book was all highlighted in certain chapters. It was false advertise like new. I wish I had spent the extra five bucks on a new one so I could made my own highlights instead of having all highlighted with different colors like in three chapters. Thank god, I only used the book twice for 2 important chapters.

4-0 out of 5 stars a useful source
I found this book to be both interesting and informative and also very useful in writing a crime story. It will definitely give you an idea of how the cops in your story should act at a crime scene and what they should and shouldn't do.The book is also helpful even if your main character isn't a cop at all.I do have a couple of complaints about the book though. For one thing, the author gives way too much detail on some things.Like the fingerprints. The chapters on fingerprints seemed to be aimed more at someone who wants to become a fingerprint expert instead of just writing fiction about them.I found parts of the fingerprint chapters to be extremely boring and I even skipped through a small portion of it.Although some amount of detail can add realism to a story, I really cannot understand why anyone would want to put THAT much detail on fingerprints into a work of fiction.Secondly, the author slips into stories of personal experience several times in the novel. Most of the stories are interesting and could help a writer, but a couple of them just seem to be rambling by the author and really have nothing to add that would help anyone in writing a novel. But despite these complaints, I still found the book to be very useful and, for the most part, very interesting.I would definitely recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scene of the Crime:The Howdunit Series
A great source of information on the field of Crime Scene Investigation. This books gives a great comprehensive overview of the field and how it may work from small towns to larger cities.A great source to find out if it may be something you would like to get into as a career.

3-0 out of 5 stars A fingerprint in the Howdunit series
Scene of the Crime has lots of facts about fingerprints and examining possible pieces of evidence at a crime scene.I found the sections about identifying remains and what changes the body goes through after death very interesting. I learned a lot of information that will help me in my writing.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good overall book; ideal for newly diagnosed.
I burned through this book in a weekend, so curious to know what was in store for me as a newly diagnosed person. I found it to be comforting (which I needed at the time), but light in some of the issues I have subsequently faced (such as unsympathetic employers, inability to pay for injection medicines). I'd like to see a book on the challenges of everyday life for newly diagnosed...I think I could have benefitted from someone else's experinces.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
being too frugal to purchase the 2004 version, i wanted to see if first i would like it, so i bought the very inexpensive 2002 edition.these comments are focused only on the 2002 edition.blackstone writes in a very easy to understand manner.she talks about things that are most important to the person with m.s.she identifies relevant topics.at times, i wished that she would have gone into more detail on some topics.on the other hand, it is so easy to read and suggestions are very helpful.on the other hand (is that 3 now?) the outline by days and months is not terribly logical and makes it less convenient to reference information.most people with m.s. will devour this book the first weekend.it compares favorably with similar books.it was well worth the purchase price and i would recommend this book.again, i have not looked at the 2004 edition and i can't comment on it.

2-0 out of 5 stars The Careless Characterization of Helping Professionals
McKnight's concerns about communities' dependency on professional assistance are legitimate, but disturbingly overstated in this book.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Strong Diagnosis of the Diagnostic Approach
McKnight, a scholar of social policy working at Northwestern University, throws harsh words at the medical, advocacy, and professional institutions. His observations are not only insightful, but they are well reasoned as well as articulated in a clear way. Although it may seem as though his writings underestimate the professional ethic of modern medicine, it is clear to an understanding reader that his purpose isn't to simply throw mud, but to inspire communities.
5-0 out of 5 stars Must Reading.
I worked in the mental health-social service industry for many years. From the beginning it was impressed upon me that clients without economic value to the agency get booted out the door. And on numerous occasions I observed how families were broken apart because the government will spend money on professionals but wont spend money for a motel and a few meals or a car repair.

Horrible editing that SHOULD embarrass the company.Watch out for the typos and some logic errors, but there isn't much else out there to help you so ... this book is probably your only choice.Don't buy it, just use the copy from your local library or the copy at Barnes & Nobles / Walden's so you don't have to waste your money on it.Good luck.

Review the math in the arco book. The logical reaoning was very easy (because I read the logicals in this book and thought they were tough! The math was the hards, so just study the book. The last section of the exam is very easy...grammar and spelling.Use this book and good luck@

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Prep
I just took the test today and I wanted to write this while it was still fresh in my mind. This is a very good book to prepare you for the exam if you have a pretty strong math and reading background. If this is so, this is the only book you will need but be careful of the typos. There were many typos and when they appeared in the math section, they obviously create real serious problems. My advice, if you don't have a strong background like me, is to buy this and the Learning Express Book. Read my review on that book as well. GOOD LUCK! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars intense
the book is really intense and gets a little hatey sometimes, but is very illustrative of the problems that arise from oppression, poverty and structural violence.

3-0 out of 5 stars Physician Heal Thyself

3-0 out of 5 stars The Nation's Health
I found this book difficult to read, as there were few illustrations, pictures, no color, etc. This is a compilation of information from various writers, requiring you to critique each article. The information is very broad, making it difficult to dissect for information on a particular topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Great book for Public Health professionals, doctors, nurses, and all of those interested in the health field.
