5-0 out of 5 stars Grassroots feminism at it's most personal
These low-income single mothers might not have all considered themselves 'feminist' as the term was used in the 1970's, but their community organizing for basic rights during that era gave significant weight to the oft-mentioned movement credo the 'personal is political'.

5-0 out of 5 stars Strong Argument
What I really enjoyed about this book was its organization and the strength of its arguments. It begins by laying out the extent and reasons for poverty in America. Then it shifts to developing several lines of reasoning as to why poverty is such an important issue that affects us all.And finally, the last third of the book talks about what can be done to effectively address poverty.I particularly enjoyed the last chapter that talks about what an individual can do in their daily life to create a positive change with respect to reducing poverty.I definitely plan to use the arguments in this book in the future.
2-0 out of 5 stars 5 stars? Really?
Mark Rank proposes many interesting ideas that attempt redefine how we think about poverty in America. Most of his ideas are solid, but my deepest concern is with the readers who gave this book 5 stars and used the word "interesting" to describe it.Did they actually read it?
5-0 out of 5 stars A timely analysis
On Nation, Underprivileged is a timely discussion of an issue that impacts us all.In his book, Professor Rank carefully crafts a compassionate, analytical and innovative approach for addressing poverty in our country. This is a must read for all (especially policy makers).

5-0 out of 5 stars worth reading
It is written by a doctor who has been working with innner city patients for over two decades. He understands their medical and psychosocial issues very well but he was puzzled by many things.Including, how is it that there is such sharp geographical clustering of poverty, how is this cycle perpetuated from one generation to the next, how does 'govt. assistance' work and how is it designed?Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mitchell peddles paid propaganda
Mr. Mitchell shows his true colors by citing the discredited Heath Lowry in denying the Armenian Holocaust.Mr. Lowry is a paid agent of the Turkish gov't.See The Chronicle of Higher Education, October 27, 1995, p.A44, "Critics Accuse Turkish Government of Manipulating Scholarship," by Amy Magaro Rubin.See also The New York Times, May 22, 1996, "Princeton Is Accused of Fronting for the Turkish Government," by William H. Honan. You will find similar "reviews" of books on the Armenian Holocaust by Mitchell and others, if indeed they are not the same person. For example, see Mitchell's 8 almost-identical reviews of books on this subject--just click "See all my reviews."They're simple cut-and-past jobs. And it doesn't matter whether Mitchell is his real name (perhaps he's David Irving). His reviews, whatever his real name, are simply pure propoganda.I wonder how much he got paid for his efforts.

1-0 out of 5 stars With a Grain of Salt
It just astonished me as how certain discursive formations can actually lead people to believe as the 'real' reality. It does not matter whether for an event to 'really happen' or not. What matters is that you hear it on a radio or read it on a newspaper or website or even talk about it at the water-cooler. Those who have had the chance to watch 'Wag the Dog' might get the idea of how such 'reality' is constructed.
5-0 out of 5 stars lessons from yesterday for today
Professor Merrill has written a fascinating book with many lessons.Instructive is the way oil politics at the 1923 Lusanne Conference got in the way of a European response to the national and humanitarian consequences of the Armenians' 20 previous years of suffering Turk inflicted "crimes against humanity" (the word genocide hadn't been coined, but crimes against humanity had been identified at the Versailles Conference). Now the west wants to use human rights to cover the military drive to the middle east oil spigot, thus an instructive irony.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Truth Hurts
This is an eye opening and insightful book that tells the TRUTH to Black America. It is a MUST READ for every young, American, "black liberal," in the United States of America.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ignore the God stuff
4.5 stars
5-0 out of 5 stars Hard Truth
Judging by other reviews, looks to me like some people just simply don't like the hard truth. This is a great book. It's about time people realize that working hard, having high moral character, and taking responsibility for ones own life and destiny is what makes you a great person and gets you ahead... not subsisting off of the handouts of others. Anyone can make in in America today. I've seen many examples in my own life of people coming from the hardest, cruddiest life and working hard to live a good life now. Life is all about choices. Do you choose to be a whiney victim, or successful member of society? As long as you choose to whine, complain, believe that everyone is out to get you, you can't succeed, everyone owes you, it's everyone else's fault, and so on, get used to your miserable existance because that's all you'll ever have until YOU decide to make it. It doesn't matter what race you are, sometimes life and circumstances suck. Deal with it and move on. There are millions of people in other parts of the world who live in conditions many times worse than anything you've ever imagined and would give anything to trade places with you. Dump your defeatist attitude. There are people who have conquered much worse than anything you have to deal with. Read this book with an open mind and decide it's time for blacks to take thier place in the modern world as leaders and proud people. With a positive attitude and working together, blacks can accomplish anything. It's time for blacks to rise to the very top of business, politics, wealth, and all of society. Start by reading this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars CAUGHT BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE
Having counselled many women through the trauma of domestic violence, the story of Bernice is one that I have heard in reality many times over.Domestic violence is about theabuser's need for power and control.Until that control is taken away, the abuser will continue to abuse regardless of how many loving promises are made. With all the support programs in place in today, there is still a stigma attached to women and their children receiving social assistance.Finding a place to rent, finding employment, transpsortation, adequate daycare, and living in constant fear of the abuser are major challenges.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars If you want to know where your tax dollar goes.........
This was the most cutting edge welfare policy proposal that I have heard.Sherraden also refutes the demonization of the poor that the press would have us believe make up the entire welfare population. The only reason Ididn't rate it 5 stars is that it is a little dry.But the early toughgoing is rewarded in the later chapters with his welfare policy proposals. For anyone concerned about where our entitlement tax dollars are going, this book is a must read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Returning Home
Considering relocating out of the Los Angeles area, I read this book and felt drawn to move down south. Being raised in New York City and living in California for 15 years I did have my reservations. But since we moved to Raleigh, NC not only have I had no regrets, I'm now a Realtor helping other African American's relocate to the area.

1-0 out of 5 stars this book is not for the average person
This book was assigned to me as a reading for a book review in my cultural anthropology class at Mississippi State University.I thought that this book was a difficult one to read because the layout was hard to follow. The names began to get jumbled by the fourth chapter. The story line could be good if it was brought to the audience in a more typical and easy to read format.Less rambling on and on would be great.I have never read a book that took half a page to describe a creek...it would have been ok if the book was about the stream but it wasn't it was about like 50 people and eachof their life stories...It stunk!!

3-0 out of 5 stars A Slight Bit Slanted But Still Somewhat Enjoyable
"Call to Home" tells the untold story of the remigration of African Americans back to the South. The book is written as an ethnography in a novelistic fashion. The stories told give fantastic insight into the motivation and attitudes compelling these individuals to move back "home".Rather than for economic reasons, Stack posits that the nostalgia of home and the love of family drive these African Americans back South.Read more
