A Wonderful, Refreshing Child Development Book
Finally, a book that offers sensible and realistic approaches to child development which departs from "mythical" ideas of past and archaic culture. Luckily, this volume isn't afraid to address the homogenous fallacies that have plagued our society and discusses significantly the exploration of truly modern theories embraced around the world. People of all walks of life, education, and backgrounds will rejoice in an important concept that this book teaches: genuinely nurturing children as opposed to treating them like pets.

Still the Best
Beginnings and Beyond is still the best Early Childhood Education text out there.

Moral people beware
If you have a conservative, moral or Christian bone in your body, this book will sicken you beyond your wildest imagination.If you fall into any of the above described categories, then this book will classify you as a "European male," or of "European Ancestory".This book preaches strongly a so called "diversity" but if you are a white male the "diversity" of opinions stops.(unless of course you decide to agree with the author.)And if you are a Catholic, you have even more to digest, as the book reaks of anti-Catholicism. ... A must-have!
This ancient times activity guide is absolutely a must-have to go along with the ancient times book!It is just full of SO MUCH MORE than you can imagine!Maps, hands-on activities, book suggestions...it will truly bring to life the history from the reader!I cannot imagine using one without the other...I can see where the ancient times books might not feel so "full" without the activity guide!It is well-worth the price and you will be thrilled at how easy it is to use, how much your children will enjoy it and how much you will all learn as a family!

Useful activities
The activities in this book are very helpful for teaching ancient history. I would not limit yourself to these activities but use them as a springboard to try other things as well. When you don't have the time or inclination to do anything else then no worries you are set with this book. The activities can stand-alone and provide a superb hands on history experience.

A great resource
As someone who sometimes find it is a bit intimidating to teach history in an exciting, interesting way and as someone who is concerned that my young children 'won't get it'; this is a great resource.

Terrific resource!
If you want a simple curriculum to follow, this is your book! You can take the sections and expand on them based onyour child's interest. This book coupled with Rebecca Rupp's Homeschooling Year by Year are pretty much the only books I need!

Great Starting Point
This book has a lot of basic information that Kindergartener's sometimes learn in public school.Having been a public school student and knowing kids in public school now, I think this would be very beneficial to any parent of a 5 or 6 year old.Most public schools, and many private schools, do not cover all this information.

Packed with Good Ideas
Eighth Edition. From beginning to end, this book is loaded with practical techniques for improving classroom behavior. The heart of the book summarizes the discipline approaches of a range of theorists, from pioneering models like Skinner, Kounin, and Dreikers to more sophisticated approaches including the Canters' Assertive Discipline, Glasser's noncoercive discipline, and Curwin and Mendler's Discipline with Dignity. The range of pedagogies corresponds to the diversity of pedagogies, districts, and students.
Look Elsewhere for "How-to's"
Building Classroom Discipline is a practical book for a college classroom;however, for the teacher looking for a "how-to" book, there are other books that are better.BCD is wonderful for learning about different theories or studies on discipline, but it doesn't get to the practical stuff until the end of the book.Therefore, if you are looking for a book full of "how-to's", read something else.

This book I believe is excellent for not only beginning teachers but also those teachers who are in a classroom now. It provides an unbiased account of Educational Theorist. The text looks at what each theorist has recommended from his or her own research in managing classroom behaviour. The book provides strategies for teachers to help control and prevent student misbehaviour. The book not only looks at old Theorist such as Dreikus, Kounin, Skinner but new Theorist such as Canter.It is a must for all teachers to read, allowing them to effectively use strategies suggested by the various theorists in their classroom. The Science Bible
This book, and its previous editions are amazing.The only textbook I've actually used from college.This is my second purchase of this book, because the first was so used and loved it fell apart.In fact I couldn't be without it!The science department of the private school, in which I work, is planning to buy it so they have it as a copy for their curriculum planning. Best writing book I've ever used!
I am a third grade teacher of mostly at-risk students (English Lang. Learners and low socio-economic students). I was frustrated with the format of most writing instruction books.They were boring or hard to follow.I also wanted to incorporate the 6 traits of writing into my lessons, so when I saw this book, I thought I would try it.

From a 32 year veteran teacher.
This is a great book to use with prek students as well as kindergarten and first graders.The lesson plans are there to use as is or to be modified to fit the needs of your students.

Woderful!
I have found this book wonderful. It brings us tools to teach phonemic awareness to children that are struggling readers.It has a lot of activities they like and step by step are taking them to the beautiful world readers have.

Love them
I love the flash cards and it is a great way to get the whole family involved.....

Sign Babies First Words
These flash cards are wonderful! I would highly recommend these.I bought these for my 22 month old son when he wasn't talking. His speech therapist wanted to start signing to see if that helped.So I bought them and couldn't believe how simple it was to teach and learn.I put the cards in a photo album to keep them clean and alsoso he could look at them whenever he wanted to. It does make a nice book, and convenient to take to the sitters.Within a couple of days the whole family was signing. He still signs today.These are very inexpensive and a great learning tool. Hope this helps.

Teaching the Youngest Writers: A Practical Guide
This book was very informative.Writing is a hard subject to teach and this is a book that can help you get started after reading it.I learned about target skills that are appropriate for K-2 students.There are not a lot of good books that focus on writing in the early grades.I can't wait to use what I learned in my classroom next year.Read more

Great Investment to Get Started
My 4.5 year old knew his numbers, but when I saw the inside of this book on amazon, I realized that I have not used any technique to build his basics in counting etc., and bought this book
Definitely worth the investment, but ...
I would highly recommend any of the kumon books, because they are very well done.The first 20 pages of this book were number tracings.Then it went to writing numbers by copying the numbers from very small text to writing them from memorization.This was too big of a jump for my son who had just turned 5.So we took a break and did the Uppercase book.Then we did the "review" part of the Simple addition book.Then we went back to this book and my son was able to continue just fine.I loved the book, but there should really be a whole book dedicated to tracing numbers, before requiring the child to write numbers from memory. ... Just Like Morrison's Other Book, But Better.
Morrison's FUNDAMENTALS OF EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION is his other book (third best, in my opinion, behind Jo Ann Brewer's book and Stephanie Feeney's book).This is essentially the same excellent text with a well-done added section on Programs and Services For Children.

I am majoring in Birth through kindergarten Education, and I feel that this book is well worth the money.With its many colorful charts and their detailed descriptions, it is an easy way to get the sometimes complicated information understood.This, along with the helpful websites and each chapters' focus questions, this book is a "must have!"

"Early Childhood Education Today"...a review
I have used this text for two years in my Foundations class that I teachat a local college. I personally like the broad scope of information thatis contained, but considered the 1997 version outdated from thestart..i.e., no brain research; In additon, I do not think the work is wellwritten at all. It is confusing and hard to follow. As an example, hementions Socrates and Plato, but does not say why (Chapter three, page 62).I could site other examples but "brevity is the soul of wit"!Thanks :) ... Read more

Highly informative
I first heard of this book from a friends mother who is a montessori teacher.I attended a lecture by Dr. Lillard about this book.It was interesting to see how there is a way to really teach children, after hearing about how much public schools are failing our children.After the lecture I went home and purchased the book.I can't say enough about it.Its incredibly interesting and I think that everyone not just parents should read it.It is amazing what children can accomplish when given the tools and opportunity that montessori provides.

If you are interested in understanding the scientific basis for the success of the Montessori approach, this is the book to read. Because there have been few studies that have compared traditional and Montessori outcomes head-to-head, Lillard does the next best thing: synthesize decades of pyschological and sociological research that validates Montessori theory and practice. She clearly demonstrates that the teaching method Maria Montessori established through empirical observation and trial and error in her own classrooms has been well-confirmed in its efficaciousness by subsequent studies in human cognitive development. This is a superbly written book, and Lillard is very good at presenting often highly intricate research in an accessble meanner. Although she is obviously a supporter (and product) of Montessori education, she does not wear her bias on her sleeve. She does not leave out research that either does not support or cannot yet be shown to support the Montessori method. If you already send your child to a Montessori school, you will find your good decision supported by her research; if you are thinking about Montessori, you will be convinced after reading this book that your choice is easy.

A wonderful resource
This is a very well written book, with a wealth of information culled from studies on children's development and the optimal conditions for growth and learning. The prose is clear and easy to digest. Excellently Written And Informed Despite Lack of Citations
Lagging a bit behind Jo Ann Brewer's and George S. Morrison's texts, Feeney & Company's book thoroughly presents the field in its essentials and reference points, but fails to internally cite the groundmaking scholarly works that put forth the concepts.With ever increasing accountability in the field, teachers need much training in accumulating the internal integrity and knowledge through a historical derived logic.Knowning where commonplace early childhood concepts originate begins this training.
