5-0 out of 5 stars MY DAD LOVED IT!!!
My dad is a total MOPAR fan and has been for years. He does model cars, has been watching NASCAR races since before I was born, (I've been to two big raceways!) and he's a total Richard Petty and Jimmy Johnson fan.
5-0 out of 5 stars THE authoritative text
Author Schild says in his introduction that he's been studing 60's Mopar door cars for decades.I can believe it!Unlike some superficially similar books on drag racing, this one reveals its author's encyclopedic knowledge of his topic.I've never seen a book of this type with such a wealth of information, from the highly technical to the more aesthetic. There are many photos, mercifully a good cross-section of Mopar wheelmen famous and obscure and not just the factory-backed stars.Ultra-detailed engine specs abound, as well as histories of each engines' development. All the Max Wedges and hemis are here, along with the Chrysler engineers, mechanics and drivers who spread the Mopar gospel in the 60's.You will not go wrong with this book whether you're a Pentastar fanatic or just interested in the history of drag racing. This one merits an A+. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Awesome book!Tons of great knowledge and advice for beginners to experts.

1-0 out of 5 stars Difficult to read, poor production quality
There are a lot better books on driving then "Secrets of Solo Racing".Frankly if you have much autocross experience at all I wouldn't bother with this one.If you're just starting out, you may get something out it if, but not much.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Benchmark
This book was the first I ever read on racing technique. This book is so good, that every time I read any other instructional books on racing my expectations are far higher than they can deliver.I read this book as a beginner, and I think that is who will benefit most from reading it, though all levels will learn from it.It lays out all the relevant information in simple language (once you pick up the necessary driving vernacular) and includes simple but very effective diagrams to help explain points.Far better than much more expensive books (and I've bought a lot of them) with fancier photographs and pro racer forwards and such. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I stand corrected
This book is a non-stop, top-speed, edge of your seat, adrenaline rush of grieving widows, disfiguring injuries, and terminal illness. When my eldest boy R.J. bought me this book for America Day (a MacAllister family holiday tradition) I nearly kicked his teeth in. But lucky for R.J., september 11th fell on a sunday this year, so didn't have my steel-toes on, just my regular soft-toed church boots. Those boots are soft as an angels cheek, and as i proved last mothers day, couldn't knock a baby tooth from a infants mouth. Needless to say, when i saw that book i assumed my boy was callin me a queer, and challengin' my claim as man of the house, much like his older brother Cody had done three years prior. Turns out i was mistaken, and after i got to pokin' around in this book i discovered a treasure trove of high-octane life lessons from Dale Jarret, Monte Dutton, and countless other heros of the golden loop. If i had known what a joy this book would be it could have saved me a $300 hospital bill, and R.J. about 20 pints of blood. It was Bobby Labontes tale of overcoming adversity that inspired me to sue the WWF for their role in puttin my boy Cody in a wheelchair, via Rick Flair's instructional pamphlet, "How to Apply a Figure-Four Leglock, the Rick Flair way". That pamphlet is a menace that should be stricken from the Holcombe County public library. Had i not been reading it that fateful day when Cody decided he was a bigger man than me, he might still be walking today. All in all i give this book 8 thumbs up, 10 American Flags, and 4 hell yeahs!

5-0 out of 5 stars Profundity beyond imagination
A wonderful, touching book, at least once I got past the tricky words snuck into this book by some snooty, Merlot-sipping elitist in a New York City publishing house (e.g., "concentrating," "motivation," and "rooster"). Also, I couldn't help but notice one highly glaring typo: For some reason, "Git-r-dun" is consistently misspelled as "Get it done." Guess they don't teach spelling in those fancy Ivy League schools, huh?

5-0 out of 5 stars best nascar book
I read this book because I am a huge NASCAR fan and I thought it would suit me. This book includes exactly what the cover says it does, inspirational stories of courage, speed, and overcoming adversity. If you aren't usually a NASCAR fan, I think you can still enjoy this book. I also think you can enjoy this book if you aren't a common Chicken Soup reader. While watching coverage of races and reading the stories on the NASCAR drivers, you really only get to see the racing side of the drivers, but in this book, you get to know what some of the drivers are really like. For instance, some wouldn't have thought Gordon would be so charitable and take his show car to a kids' school, who was going blind and take him on a ride. Throughout this book, you hear from nearly every perspective in NASCAR, whether it be the drivers, fans, commentators, reporters, or even people who work in the garages. Something unique about this edition to the Chicken Soups' are the color images inserted in the middle of the book. I thought these were a bit out of place for this books theme because they were mostly images of drivers in victory lane or racing. This book will make you proud to be a NASCAR fan if you are one, and if you aren't, then you will probably begin tuning into the races on Sundays. My favorite story was the one where an older racer by the name of Joe Weaver takes one more lap around the track years after a highway accident left him rehabilitating in a nursing home and stopped him from racing. It was truly an inspirational story. I highly suggest this book to anyone and everyone, it is a great read.

3-0 out of 5 stars Tire Traction Contents
I am an engineer qualified to carry out a technical review of the tire traction portion of this book. Mr. Haney is mostly wrong about tire traction. He has not put forward a scientifically based explanation of how it works. I have informed SAE International, in detail.

5-0 out of 5 stars Any information about tires is a treasure!
The tire is the most important part of an automobile, and the least covered by the literature. That's why any information about tires is a treasure. Thecomplexity of the structure and behavior of the tire are such that no complete and satisfactory theory has been propounded. Books on vehicle dynamics are available but they are mostly written by academics who emphasize mathematical rather than clear explanation of how things really work. The tire might be the most useful and complicated device humans make, but the tire manufacturers provide no useful information to their customers. People are forced to buy tires mainly on the basis of price and company reputation. Even race teams get tire data only sporadically, and that data is pretty useless anyway. Tire performance is necessarily highly dynamic, but tire data comes mainly from testing under static conditions.
5-0 out of 5 stars A technical book that you can't put down?
Beleive it or not, this technical book had me glued to its pages like a great work of fiction. Haney is an excellent writer, and the 'meat' of the text is intertwined with great real-world stories and examples from motorsport. Interviews with Mario Andretti, Dan Gurney, as well as other less famous but no less competent vehicle dynamic experts are included. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Steve Reyes is the greatest drag racing photographer EVER...
I actually have not gotten this book yet, but I don't even have to see it to know that it's an amazing collection of images from the most exciting days of the sports' history.
5-0 out of 5 stars Drag Racing
I ordered Quarter Mile Chaos as a birthday gift for my boyfriend. We attended a drag race last year and it was awesome so I couldnt wait to get the book. When it arrived, I read it cover to cover and was really impressed with the pictures.I didnt realize the pictures were from years ago and I was worried my boyfriend might not relate to them but I was so wrong. He knew so much about almost every picture in the book.It was a pleasure watching him look through the book.Thank you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great shots!!
I'd love to see more color shots, but there's some great rare black and white pics that still make the book worth a look. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars All right for LS1 novices
First off this book is very basic. The author reveiles some performance combos that can be beneficial to the novice crowd, but for anyone has researched the great gen. III small block, this book is a too redundant. My advice to anyone who wants to learn more about the LS1 should look it up online for free.2-0 out of 5 stars Chevy LS1/LS6 Performance....misses the mark.
The Third Generation, Chevrolet Small-Block V8 was introduced as the LS1 in the 1997 Corvette. A slightly different version came in the 1998 Camaro Z28. Light-truck versions arrived in 1999 and 2000 and, in late 2000, a special high-performance variant, LS6, appeared in 2001 Corvette Z06es. 4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the weekend hobbyist
This book takes you well through the ins and outs of the Gen. III small block. While the technical detail is a little lacking, it perfectly complements the standard skills and comprehension levels of the average weekend racer. I'd recommend this book for anyone contemplating a modification to this superlative power plant. ... Read more
