5-0 out of 5 stars The Second Step in Racing Learning
In the second book of the Speed Secret Series, it goes in racing learning more in depth than the first book, it starts with preparing the racer to be a Complete Race Driver, it shows what racers should have, such as Racing Skills, Physical Skills, Career Skills, Marketing Skills, Mental Skills and Testing Skills.
5-0 out of 5 stars Speed Secrets 2: More Professional Race Driving Techniques
Another great book in the series.Brings up things one wouldn't necessarily have attended to in the beginning.Good for general driving, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars The companion book to book 1.
If you are looking for books on racing driving techniques then at least start with books by Ross Bentley.I bought this book and book 1 and they are books that go together.

5-0 out of 5 stars "American Sports Car Racing in the 1950s" is a WINNER!
When my book "American Racing ~ Road Racing In The 50s and 60s" was published I was deluged by calls from the West coast.Everybody wanted to know, "When are you going to do a book about West coastracing."I had to tell them I never photographed over there.2-0 out of 5 stars Heroic effort to cover an era while missing much of the same
I was there during this era, as the wife of a driver, as a licensed flagman and while I thought this book made a heroic effort to cover this very exciting time I thought it missed the true uniqueness of the era whichwas the beauty of the people and the mystery of the machines. This bookspends a lot of time talking in depth about a few people, one of theauthor's brothers for example. It is really not so much about Americanracing as it is about California racing - lines saying that Sports carracing (even Vintage car racing) may have begun in the Northeast but cameto maturity in California give evidence to the bias toward covering thisera with a definite prejudice toward certain people and certain geography. Like a previous reader, I too would like to see Volumn II perhaps theauthors can cover the era with more of an eye to history and less selfinterest. However, to their credit these authors have assembled atremendous number of interesting photos and despite the wordiness of thetext much fascinating data.

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing book for being written some 40 years afterward.
I was there at St Jo and Elkhart and Sebring and the airport circuits in the Midwest and this book is awash in memories. The pictures are perfect for bringing back the cars and the people that as a teenager Iworshiped...remembering the ride with neighbor Masten in the Allard to theLeawood drug store on snowy streets to buy the lone copy of Road &Track. We didn't have California, but the trickle down was prettygood...Denise at Meadowdale, Hall in Kansas, Bunker and Katskee and therest.I sold my '32 Ford for an MG and never looked back...American SportsCar racing as I recall and Lynch describes formed a life long love for theera and the cars...as I read now sitting in my '54 Morgan in my garage witha can of Schlitz. This book is a keeper. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Great promise as a driver does not make great reading
Danica Patrick is currently THE star and main attraction on the IRL racing circuit, being a 24 year old, good looking driver who shows great promise and who happens to be female. She is currently in her second season on the IRL, but despite several great finishes (including a rousing 4th place at the Indy 500 as a rookie in 2005), has yet to win in the IRL.
1-0 out of 5 stars Ego Crazy Can't Stop Talking About How Great She Is.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great role model - excellent read for young women
This book is inspiring to all ages and is highly recommended to young women! You do not need to be a racing fanatic to enjoy this book. Danica Patrick is an amazing woman who sets an excellent example that any dream is possible if you have passion, stay focused on your goals and have a good support network. As I myself am a woman working in a male-dominated career, her descriptions of the challenges faced and what it takes to succeed are right-on target. The quantity of photos was a great extra as well as the diary entries. I liked that she responded to complaints by her critics. I gave it four stars because I would have enjoyed fewer inspirational quotes and more tangible details about her car, the typical day, her racing education, etc. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Motorcycle Roadracing book out.
This book has been out of print for years and it is hands down the best book out there on roadracing a motorcycle. Code's books are obtuse and difficult to read and this is simple and direct from one of the most talented roadracers ever. It covers set-up, training, bike prep, testing and more. All more from the perspective of what Roberts did when he raced rather than a step by step process of "how to". The book is ghost written in the first person and is a little cocky (which you'd expect) and dated (since it was written in the 80's) but none of this really detracts as it's a fantastic insight into one of the greatest racers of our time. If you race motorcycles you must have this in your library. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Interesting Insight Into The Life Of Jeff Hammond In Racing
I started reading this book when I went to bed and couldn't put it down until it was finished.Jeff writes about his father racing dirt tracks and how he worked with his uncle on his dad's race car at the age of 12.From those days, he and his brother went on to build cars on their own and get drivers to drive for them. This led to Jeff putting aside his dream for playing college football and become involved with Junior Johnson's team working his way up the ranks to Crew Chief.
3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting but a bit shallow
Some people really know how to market themselves.During the last few years, Jeff Hammond has went from being a succesful NASCAR crew chief to TV anlayst, pitchman, professional wrestler, rodeo competitor and now book author. This man has quite an agent!
5-0 out of 5 stars Thirty Years Behind the Scenes
If there is any sport that is team oriented but where the team gets almost no recognition it's NASCAR racing. The driver gets all the glory, the kisses of the pretty girls, the photographs holding the trophy.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Original and Still the Best Book on Tubular Spaceframes
If you are thinking of building a "Locost" replica of the Lotus Seven according to Ron Champion's Build Your Own Sports Car for as Little as 250 and Race It!, you would be well advised to consult this book to see how Champion's design could be improved. As reviewer Ian Carter can probably attest, a chassis built straight from Champion's book will not pass the Australian government's mandatory test of torsional rigidity.A Web search for "Locost" will yield thousands of hits from which you can eventually dig out some minor improvements to the Locost chassis that will allegedly double its stiffness. But if the principles so clearly presented by Costin and Phipps were applied in a complete redesign, the chassis stiffness could probably be doubled again due to improved triangulation and the use of round rather than square tubing.(Sure, square tubing is easier to weld but structurally it's equivalent to round tubing that has already collapsed on four sides!)

5-0 out of 5 stars The Chassis Designers Bible, Amen
There is yet to be a book written, that describes the why's and how's of designing a light-weight, high-performance sports car chassis in a more informative, yet pleasantly readable style than "Racing and Sports Car Chassis Design".There are other, more contemporary titles on this topic, and having read many of them, I have a strong impression that their authors were much influenced by this book; perhaps having studied it in their college and university years. That would not be surprising, for it is forty years since the author, Michael Costin, then Development Director of Lotus Cars Ltd., with technical writer David Phipps and automotive artist, James A. Allington completed what was to be acclaimed by the industry, and motoring enthusiasts, as the Chassis Designers' Bible. 5-0 out of 5 stars the best book in existence on automobile chassis design
Mike Costin was chassis designer at Lotus, andalso co-founded Cosworth. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The NASCAR Vault
I have purchased two of these books, one for a seven year old and another for an eleven year old and they love them. They arefilled with so much information and they like looking at all the memorabilia from past years and how the cars have changed.I suggest every NASCAR fan no matter how young or old, purchase one of these books, it is well worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome NASCAR history lesson
The book has an amazing amount of historical information, and the collectables are incredible! You feel like you've stepped back in time to the memorable events that have made NASCAR what it is today. A must have for fans and racers alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars The NASCAR Vault
For the first time ever, NASCAR has opened its massive archives to the public, taking fans on a speed-defying journey through a national phenomenon's evolution. The NASCAR Vault chronicles the growth of one of America's greatest obsessions, and includes more than 150 images and 26 plastic-encased NASCAR collectibles to tell the story as it should be told: in 3-D.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lots of errors
While at it's core, this book does tell a compelling (and sometimes heartbreaking) story of the Allison clan, it is seriously handicapped by the author's failure to thoroughly research the subjects discussed in order to be accurate. Another shortcoming is the numerous mis-spellings, which should have been corrected during the editing process. An example is the author stating that Bobby Allison test drove the Buick Riata before it's release, when a simple Google search reveals the correct spelling is Reatta. In the end I found this book very frustrating and confusing to read. My advice is to pass it by.

2-0 out of 5 stars Confusing and inaccurate
Not unlike past Golenbock books MIRACLE is confusing to read and full of inaccuracies and errors. Some portions had to be read a couple of times to try and figure out what exactly the author was trying to get across to the reader. One of the more glaring errors was when it was stated that when Donnie Allison ran the Indy 500 and World 600 in the same weekend he was the only driver to do that until Jeff Gordon did it in 1993.WHAT?Jeff Gordon has NEVER run the Indy 500 and certainly didn't do so his rookie year in Winston Cup racing. In another chapter there is a discussion of Bobby Allison testing at Ontario Speedway in California then the author goes on to describe Bobby's feelings as he pulled on the "historic Indianapolis track".Which was it?Indy or Ontario. The Author claims that Bobby gave his Indy crew chief the nickname "Lugs" (and he called Bobby "Stroker" )because of the movie "Stroker Ace".Cute story, but that movie didn't come out for another 10 years after Bobby's 1973 run at Indy. The book is filled with typos and grammatical errors.I'd save my money on this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Miracle : Bobby Allison and the Saga of the Alabama Gang
Peter Golenbock has done it again .This book will open your mind and heart to the joy and tragedy that might come with being a racing family. It won't matter if you were fans of The Alabama Gang or not. You just need to be a fan of Racing to understand the drive that pushed Bobby Allison to continue to love the sport of racing which handed him and his wife Judy such unspeakable tragedy of the loss of two sons and almost cost him his life .This book will touch the heart of every NASCAR fan who has cheered his heart out for the win of a race.It will also touch the heart of every father and mother who has lost a child but continue to go on.This story is for anyone who is a fan of life and isn't that what we all are...A fan of life. A Must read for every fan of NASCAR , no matter who you want to win the race ! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent appraisal of the Southern paradox
The 1950's South was both a time and a place of contradictions. On the one hand, there was a cultural revolution going on that fused both white and black musical tastes into one revolutionary music genre (rock 'n' roll) anda political revolution that went on (integration) which made the culturalachievements seem to pale in comparison. In essence, the South of the1950's was a confusing maelstrom of contradictory policies and failedopportunities for peaceful change.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An absolutely OUTSTANDING book!
I recommend this book without reservation. It is about what its title states, "How to Build Horsepower."Vizard tells you what you need to do to build horsepower. He does NOT tell you how to magically build power without spending any money.Power costs money but Mr Vizard tells you where to spend it.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a gem!
If you are going to rebuild any engine and want to add horsepower as you go then this book is the ideal book to read first. The book covers all areas of any engine and where and why you can gain horsepower. The author does get technical which is a bonus to some people.
5-0 out of 5 stars Well written, but a tad difficult for the fresh beginner
This is an excellent book for anyone seeking an understanding on how to improve the performance of their car, especially V8 owners. However, I have a few words of caution. This book does not give you a Chapter 1 introduction on how car engines work. In the style that the book is written, the author assumes that the reader has a basic understanding of automotive systems and design. Be perfectly honest with yourself. If you do not know how fundamental automotive systems work together to allow cars to move, then I suggest reading a book on how car engines work systematically, BEFORE reading this one, such as "Car Smarts", by Mary Jackson. It covers every aspect of tuning your engine - system by system - so that not only horsepower, but overall performance and durability of your car, is increased optimally. Otherwise, an excellent book; I recommend it! ... Read more
