This is a supplement, not a primary resource
Hopefully this statement will help those of you who are trying to decide what to buy: If you do not own a full copy of the APA Publication Manual, then do not buy this book. This book is meant to be a pocket-sized reference guide that you can carry with you. It is meant as a supplement, but it is not the primary resource -- the APA Publication Manual is the primary resource.
Incomplete
There's no rules for title pages, no examples of manuscript pages, no rules for pagination. It doesn't even tell you if the reference list belongs on a separate page or what its heading looks like. I consider these glaring omissions, particularly if you are expected to use pure APA and have no departmental style guide (like me). This book is basically a glorified guide to citation and syntactic rules. Avoid it and pay the extra five bucks for the complete book. Getting the cheap book as some kind of protest won't signficantly hurt the APA and it will just make things harder for you.

Good book, lacking in visual references
While this is a great condensation of the main rules needed to write in APA style, this book lacks one major thing -- the practical examples of how to apply APA style in a document or manuscript.

Good Book
I took a sociology class and it requested I purchase this book for the class. I really enjoyed the class along with the book. The information it contained was interesting which made it easy to read. All in all a good book!

important lesson
This textbook is not the current edition my class is using. Also the cd was missing. I do not blame the seller. It is my mistake as new to buying my textbooks online. A Textbook on Human Communication
I am a huge fan of Daniel Goleman.He's the bestselling author who coined the term "Emotional Intelligence" with his 1995 book of the same name.Now he's got a new book, "Social Intelligence: The New Science of Human Relationships."Social intelligence is the ability to read other people's cues and then act on them.Life is all about relationships, and there is a science to how we relate to each other.It's fascinating to see how Goleman breaks down each aspect of communication.We can learn how to more effectively express ourselves so that we feel understood.And we can learn how to better "read" other people so that we can better understand.This helps to improve our interactions and ultimately strengthen our relationships.He talks about "synchrony" or interacting smoothly at the nonverbal level, which is an important, yet often overlooked, part of relating.Goleman also scientifically explains "the capacity for joy" and how that affects our social intelligence.He shows how our resilience plays an important role in our happiness, which comes into play as we express ourselves to others.

As an instructor, I found this to be an excellent text.In particular, I appreciated the repeated incorporation of cross-cultural research.This text answers the call for incorporating diversity across the curriculum.Repeated inclusion of cross-cultural similarities and differences, combined with repeated discussions of the interconnections of multiple variables, helps students move away from a "one-size fits all" approach and egocentric thinking.By the end of the semester, when students were presented with a hypothetical problem scenario to resolve, they quickly outlined a list of additional details they would need to know, offering how each variable (parenting style, ethnicity, location of residence, violence within family, etc.) would alter the "goodness of fit" of their intervention.Also, the author does not shy away from presenting research evidence that is sometimes contradictory or inconclusive, which provides an excellent opportunity for in-class discussions of the reality of research and how, as a field, we address these issues. The only drawback is the amount of information sometimes overwhelmed students, so I found it necessary to focus their reading on certain sections of each chapter - however this can also be viewed as strength, since it allowed me to "customize" my course to some extent.

A Polymath Desperately in Need of Focus
Given Castells' huge range of understanding and the sheer ambition of his work, it seems a bit unfair to really criticize this book. Few writers would try to tackle the huge ideas that Castells covers here - vast theories about the state and direction of humanity in relation to the rising information society. On the other hand, theory-of-everything books like this, as frequently attempted by polymaths such as Fritjof Capra, have their own unavoidable problems which deserve to be criticized. When a theorist tries to combine knowledge of everything into a huge integrated and unified theory, the writing becomes monstrously diffuse and unfocused. That is the exact problem with this book. The Rise of Network Society
The Rise of Network Society brings up many important issues regarding globalization and what Manuel Castells calls the network society. He argues that the technological revolution that began in the late 70s in Silicon Valley has had a profound impact on all aspects of society. The changes, he argues are most apparent in the new relationships between the economy, state and society that have been formed. He suggests that an increase in the flexibility of management, a decentralization of production and an increased reliance on networking has caused many of the immediate changes taking place. Castells suggests that it is through the decline in the labor movement and the devaluing of the laborers that capital has become an increasingly powerful network. This, he suggests has caused networks such as labor, criminal or mafia groups, and financial markets to be realized on a global rather than local scale. By looking at how new relationships and identities are being conceived of in what he calls the informational age, Castells is able to theorize about the ways in which technology and information have will continue to transform society.
Is information technology the culprit?
Many of the observations Prof. Catells made are valid, however the connection between information technology and the social problems are not very strong. The network states, global criminal society, wealth disparity, etc. are more or less the byproduct of globalization. Read more

A great way to understand the history of our country
This book will help you to comprehend the background of our country a little more as well as give a high-level overview of where the foundations of our nation came from.Covering literature to common everyday sayings as well as the scientific side of things from an origin perspective, you will begin to have an appreciation for what our forefathers went through as they strove to build a society in the grand ol' USA.

Down-and-Dirty Info
This book is excellent if you want to know concise bits of info about a particular topic (and it covers A LOT of topics, grouped nicely into categories in the Table of Contents). Then, if you want to delve further into an item, you can always hop on the Web. I gave the book to my 21-year-old son to help him start his own book collection, so I recently purchased another for myself.

Not what I expected...
I bought this on recommendation and was excited about reading it.I received it and was taken aback at the format of the book.I thought it was a book you could read from cover to cover, etc....but it is more like a dictionary/reference book to address any questions you might have regarding any number of things.Stillis an interesting read though. ... I don't have any real hope that Mr. Powell will see this, but just in case, I have something to say to him.Sir: I remember your work--I bootlegged it when I worked at Kinko's in the early 80s.By then you probably already regretted your efforts.
Awesome Book
The material covered is fascinating if you enjoy the idea of making "cool" things from household products. The material is dated but an awesome book nonetheless.

Seriously...
This book is accurate as a blind folded archer spun 3 times in a game of pinata. There is no real useful info in this book, you'd get more tactics out of a Steven Seagal film. This book should be taken out of print before some dummy hurts themselves. If you're interested in learning the tricks of the trade buy a surplus field manual (FM), Watch Discovery Channel, or Join the Military or some Government agency. Billy Powell was a very misinformed hippie. The part that gave it all away was the part about the M-1 Garand. "Used in both World Wars and Korea" WW2 and Korea yes, WW1 no. I think its luck of some higher power that this dummy didn't hurt himself in the process. ... Read more

Advancing the categorization of violent crimes
I was greatly anticipating the delivery of this book as it had been labeled the "DSM of Violent crimes".Although I wouldn't apply the same label, for the DSM approaches mental illness in a drastically different way than the CCM approaches criminal investigation, this book is a great way to understand the ways in which the crimes can be differentiated based upon the evidence observed.
Leading the field of crime classification
Whilst written primarily for the American law enforcement community this book is an excellent read and will provide a highly useful guide to police officers, criminal lawyers and criminologists the world over. John Douglas proves again that he is one of the leaders in the field of behavioral science providing a character type for each of the main crime classes. I recommend that anyone embarking on a degree with emphasis on criminal law or the sociology of crime should read this book. Technical, not for light reading

Fun -and- educational.
This is one for both the scholar who needs a quick reference and the casual enthusiast looking to impress friends with mythical trivia (not that many people have friends who are so easily impressed).
very nice
As others have mentioned, this book is an encyclopedia and as such contains mostly facts.The stories and legends mentioned in the book are briefly surmised.The pictures are all in black and white.Most beings mentioned in the book are not pictured.Having no other similar book to compare this to, I'd say it's pretty complete.I've never heard of most of the creatures listed.I did find a few beings missing that I think are important and sometimes there are multiple entries for the same subject, under different and sometimes very similar names.

A Very Smart Introduction

Not Mired In Postmodern Rhetoric
This is the first Anthropology introduction I have read that doesn't get bogged down in postmodern academic speak.It was very clear and interesting, with good examples. Get a first impression of the field
This is a great little book to get a first impression of anthropology. The two authors present different historical developments and schools of thought. I had not know anything about this academic field before, but this book made me want to read more. Especially helpful with that were the examples that pertained to the authors' own fieldwork in Mexico and Indonesia. effortful but...
This book is a pioneering effort to simplify network analysis for the unitiated but... there are too many eccentricities and mistakes for this tome to be taken seriously as eithera technical guide (see Wasserman and Faust) or a sociological simplification.

A little dry, but still impressive
Maybe it is just me, or maybe something is lost in the translation for the exerpts reproduced in this volume, but the reading was a little rougher going than I expected.It is, however, wide-ranging, with voices from some of the lessor-examined communist regimes, and it definitely worth a look if this is your field of interest.

An excellent companion to The Black Book of Communism
But unlike the Black Book, which derives most of its information from recently accessible Soviet archives and other sources, this emotionally charged tome relies on the accounts of victims themselves, which makes it even more damning in my view. This book should convince many that Communism in practice is every bit as murderous as its rival totalitarian ideology Fascism, which is considered the epitome of political evil.
