Great book, especially for a novice
Before starting my current restoration project, I knew absolutely nothing about working on cars - much less working on an automatic transmission. I purchased this book, built up my courage, and decided to attempt to rebuild my transmission completely on my own. With the help of the numerous pictures and detailed instructions, I had no problem doing my own transmission work. The author gives you a basic understanding of how a transmission works, details how to tear down the transmission, what to look for when inspecting the parts for ware, and how to put everything back together again. With this book, even a beginner can rebuild a transmission.

Great detail in this book, covers step by step process in re-building your tranny.

I can only second what the first reader review of this book sais. I was amazed how the author takes you by the hand and how he does not forget to tell you even about the smallest details you might forget about! Truley A Gem
This may very well be the best investment I have ever made. I almost purchased another name brand manual and I am glad I didn't. I found the information in it to be vague and confusing but with the Chilton's everything is easy to find and understand. I have saved over $300 so far by doing the work myself and am about to save $200 more this weekend. I would recommend Chilton's to anyone who is working on a car expert or novice. It's well worth the price!!!!

jack of all trades, master of none
This is a very informative book, but if you are looking for something specific on a given model, you may be out of luck.In fact, I got the Haynes manual from the library, which covers less models and years, and that still didn't mention the vacuum pump for an 86 Sedan De Ville, which is the part that I need to replace.I guess I'll just wing it. Neither book addressed the removal and replacement of the antenna, either, but if I were to do that incorrectly, the worst would be lack of radio reception, or maybe a short in the stock "Symphony Sound" cassette deck, which wouldn't affect me too much.Maybe the Chilton's editorial staff book would be more detailed. it's very informative

Chilton book just O.K.
I have just started doing multiple maintainance projects on a 94 coupe.Chilton helps but since the book spans the complete C-4 generation it can be confusing depending on which engine you have.There is a critical error on spark plug gap.The books gives .035 for all years.The later models take a .050 gap.Double check your year before install.It is difficult to get the plugs in, you don,t want to do it twice.The graphics in the book are not great and the black and white pictures seem hard to see in some cases.

While this book gives overall information, it is lacking much of what is needed by the wrench that is doing the hands on repairs. If someone else is doing the work and you want to know what is being done then this book will suffice.

One of the Best Starter Books
By far a really, really good starter book for anyone looking to see what it would take to get into restoring a classic car.If you know the basics; budgeting, tools needed, what car to look for this is not the book for you.
A Good Beginner's Guide
If you already know a lot about Pitman arms, rag joints, pinion gears, and harmonic balancers, then this book is probably not for you.After all, the word, "idiot," is in the title.As the new owner of a collector car who hasn't much of a clue where to start, I found it to be perfectly suited to my needs and knowledge level.The information is presented in such a way as to apply to a wide range of vehicle types, which I especially liked, since my specific vehicle interests don't correspond at all with the author's.Most importantly, the author is a good writer and the book is enjoyable to read, cover to cover.(There are a few typos, which always surprises me.)Overall, a good value and a great introduction to the topic for beginners. ... Great book for airbrushing
I really love your "down to earth approach" and attention to "small detail" which really helps to fill in the voids for me. Other airbrush books tend to have big steps that seem to skip alot of the process, where this book, goes over each step in great detail that makes it easy to follow along. I like the way she really explains how to mix the colors and the tools she uses. I have just started painting and doing airbrush work last year. The info in this book meets me at where I am in addition to explaining some of the "goofs" and "boo boos" I have already made. I especially find the chapters on doing artwork, flames and graphics to be extremely helpful. As a novice, I feel you can never be too detailed when you explain "how to do's". Love the way she describes the processes, progress and tips for "what colors to use", etc. I am really looking forward to her next books.
Best airbrush book I've read
I picked up the book over the weekend, as well, and it is really good. Some of the best photos, really showing the details that you only see when you are actually trying to do this stuff. Too many books will show you a few 'in-progress' shots, and the end results, without giving you all of the in between details that make all the difference in understanding how it is really done. Joann explains that she was trying to include things that other books on the subject really don't cover, and I for one think she has done an outstanding job on this book. It's the bikes that we all have seen in the magazines, and it is really neat to see the paint as it was being done - how it was being done! Great work. Great read, too. Interesting stories, details, photos... I'm going to pick this book up often, and use it as inspiration. The chapter on the pin-up mural makes me want to give it a try, rather than make it all seem very intimidating and impossible for the person who might not have the experience, like me! ... Read more

Auto manual is a lemon!
I recently bought this Chilton manual for my 2000 Honda Accord, and "disappointed" is an understatement. The manual was entirely generic procedures supplemented by poor quality photos and factory drawings. Worse, in two places where I have done the procedures in the past, the manual was flat out wrong. In one case, the procedure described to retract the disk brake calipers would actually damage the caliper ifused. I returned the manual, and strongly recommend you stay away from the Chilton series. Hayes is better.

Good as info source, bad as a service guide.
I have recently acquired a 1996 Honda Accord.My problem is that the "climate control" panel isn't working.The fan, A/C, defroster, and a couple of other controls seems to have lost power.So I buy Chilton's "REPAIR manual", as it says on the front. Instructions turned out to be VERY vague on specifics of location of key parts, fasteners, etc.2 pictures showed the panel being taken out easily, but it wasn't so.After trying to pry open the panel for 1/2 an hour, I bent/broke it at one place and dislocated the heater vents from the panel.
For a Prelude, this is a terrible book
I have a 1999 Honda Prelude. Previous to this, I had a Honda Civic. The book for the Civic was awesome with clear step by step instructions with pictures to accompany each step. This book, all the steps shown involve the Honda Accord which has a totally different body than the Prelude. Things that they mention in steps, more often than not, don't pertain to the Prelude. ... Don't buy an SL without reading this book first!
If you're considering buying an SL, or simply want to learn more about your existing one(s), I strongly recommend getting this book!I had spent countless hours searching the internet for specific information, but to no avail. However, once I bought the book, no more wasted time. All that I needed to know was between the covers. If you're an SL enthusiast, don't be caught without it!

There is plenty of information to provide you with a very good working knowledge of the car before you make a purchasing decision. The cost of this book is a small price to pay that can save you thousands of dollars if you buy the wrong car. Get the book and be better prepared to buy the car.

TOTAL car care??? Not really
This book does not cover every aspect of the car. It does help though. If you buy this book you might want to get the Haynes version as well. Two books printed by the same company yet very different...odd. Between the two of them you can get almost all the info you need. Both books are severly lacking/or just plain wrong in the body interior section. If you are lucky enough to own the official GM Service manuals for your car and you are not a professional mechanic,The Chilton & Haynes books will help in understanding what it is the service manual is trying to tell you. Sort of like one of those dummies books that were popular not too long ago :o)

Chilton 1990 Caddy repair manual
If you buy this book like I did because you want to make relatively simple (but potentially very expensive) repairs yourself, say like fix an electric window, or replace a heater blower, or an automatic radio antenna but not its motor, or understand the vacuum system so you can trouble-shoot and fix vacuum-dependant things, I have one word for you: FORGEDDABOUDIT! This Chilton is pathetically superficial. A complete waste of time. Over-rated, over-hyped, and insultingly vague. Burn this!

Great for a beginner, nearly worthless for more advanced readers
Another book that I had high hopes for, only to be let down. I was looking for some real insider secrets from a leading engine builder. I spent 10 years in the engine rebuilding business and now do it only as a hobby. I am always on the lookout for great books on the subject. This book is not one of them. Smokey Yunick's Power Secrets is a much better buy, although it doesn't talk about fuel injection. If you are a beginner in the engine building world, then by all means read this book, then read Smokey's Power Secrets.

This is the Chevy small block book I was looking for.
Finally, someone wrote a book for me. The book "John Lingenfelter on Modifying Small-Block Chevy Engines: High Performance Engine Building and Tuning for Street and Racing" is the book I have been looking for.

Wow, where do I begin? John Lingenfelter is like the god of small block Chevy's. I love his approach of bigger isn't better. It's how everything is in tune with every component of the car. In Depth
This seems to be an excellent repair manual.I have the Volvo shop manuals and still couldn't fine the intermittent wiper relay.With this book, I was able to find it within minutes.The repair sections have the appropriate torque specifications.This is a nice feature.

The next best thing to the factory manual
There are lots of really crummy aftermarket shop manuals out there, but this isn't one of them! Excellent illustations and descriptions.Fairly comprehensive.Much better than the other two well known aftermarket brand repair manual and well worth the extra bucks.

$225.00 bucks for this, you're crazy!!!!!
I paid $19.95 give or take plus shipping for this book a couple years ago. I was very disappointed with the book when I bought it, for the price that I bought it. I can't let someone pay $225 for this book.
Worth It?
This book was originally $19.95 and worth every penny of that sum! Most of the information included is from previously published Military Vehicle Magazine. A purist would be hard pressed to take much from this, all of the information is contained the G-741 Tech manual. Sorry Dave!

Save your money
If you buy this book with the idea that it will guide you in the restoration of your M37, save your money because it does not do that.There are a few useful suggestions but very few specific restoration tips.The book is worth its original issue price of $20 but not much more than that.It's an interesting read but not a how-to book. ... Chilton's Nissan Maxima 1993-98 Repair Ma
Chilton's drawings are obscure, info is incomplete, and their approach presumes you are a professional mechanic.Haynes repair guide is a bit cheaper and much better for the moderate to accomplished do-it-yourselfer.

Repair Disappointment
This manual is probably suited for more advanced do-it-yourself repair individuals.Step-by-step instructions are vague and confusing.Iidentified an error (PCV valve location on '95-98 engines) on my firstreview which threw me off totally.I'm sure there are plenty of othererrors.I'm not thrilled at all of the blow-up drawings.I just don'ttrust the book period!

Girl-Friendly Read
As a woman who only has a cursory knowledge about cars and all the potential one can hold, I found this book to be particularly helpful and written in simple enough and very clear language that enabled me as a novice modder to complete my own projects without too much outside help.Definitely A+++++.

A warning against over doing it
If you are thinking about modifying your car and have the "need for speed", read this book first.It'll give you fair warning about what happens legally and financially if you don't plan your modification properly.Bascially before you install that race-ready ECU, turbo or exhaust think of the repercussions it'll cause legally with the environment and the police. The information is very basic but useful to know and far ranging.

Definitely for Dummies!
Based on other customer reviews, I expected to see some real content in this book.Very disappointed to find an extremely sketchy outline of possible considerations for performance mods.Not really any details at all on any of the subjects offered.
