Excellent guide for the casual off-roader
I've been using this book for close to a couple years now.While I don't consider myself a novice to off-roading, I definitely don't fall into the rock-crawling group, preferring to use my 4x4 to simply get me to new and out-of-the-way places when time permits.Thus far it has proven to be an excellent resource for quick weekend off-roading getaways and for reading up on new trails to explore.In fact, I've enjoyed this book so much I wound up buying two others as gifts for family and friends.The photos and overviews of each trail definitely help give a good feel for what to expect.If you're a techno-geek like me, being able to plot a computer-generated map using the detailed GPS coordinates will prove highly invaluable (though I have discovered a few critical--though easily identifiable and correctable--errors in the coordinates), and with a handheld GPS I don't need to worry about the often-unusual orientation of the printed maps.For those of us who love exploring, this book will make a fantastic resource.

Great Book
The best book for beginners.Gives ratings and some pictures for all the trails, so you know what to expect.Probably not a whole lot for more advanced off-roaders, but then they probably won't be reading this book anyway.I recommend this book for anybody with an SUV who wants to use it off-highway.The only downside of this book is the detail maps of the trails.For some reason, they couldn't agree on which way to point North(usually north is up in all other maps) so sometimes you have to turn the book sideways to the right or left to get your bearings.Also, not much detail on the maps themselves, so sometimes you really dont' know where you are in relation to the surrounding area.But they give plenty of detail in the driving directions, so you almost don't need the map.Best book I've ever bought, anyone who likes to adventure outdoors should buy this.You don't even need an SUV on the easier trails.

The quintessential So Cal book for dirt road exploring.
First thing that hits you is the heft of this book.It is large and heavy, but that just tantalizes you of what lies beyond the cover.It is full of so much information about southern California's backcountry you could spend hours and hours reading.But this book is to be used as a guide for exploring.And guide you it does. The maps, descriptions and details are excellent for each trail.The history section is great and my family and I even used this book to identify plants from its full color photos on our last outing. For anyone wanting to explore dirt trails in So Cal, from mild ones not really needing 4 wheel drive to more difficult ones, this book is for you. Absolutely HORRIBLE manual
******One-star is NOT LOW ENOUGH******* 1991-99 Ford Explorer Repair Manual
In section 6 the information for the windshield wiper motor is not applicable to my 1996 explorer.Also, there is no information about how to remove / replace the windshield washer spray nozzles.Or how to remove the cowling along the base of the windshield.

Chilton's has lost touch with reality.
I purchased this book for needed factual, accurate information of which I got neither. I wanted to replace the lower ball joints on my '99 Ranger, so I bought this book. Take note: on page 8-4 it states specifically that the 1998-99 Ranger does NOT have coil springs. This of course is hogwash as my '99 most definitely has coil springs. In addition, it states on page 8-8 that the ball joint is an integral part of the lower control arm. This, too, is complete hogwash. Please be advised that this book is RIFE with erroneous information - including any pictures contained therein. buy a factory service manual
A serious do-it-yourselfer better buy a factory service manual for his/her specific vehicle from Chrysler.It costs $90, however, non-factory service manual is a waste of money for most of buyers.You just don't find information that you need to repair your vehicle.

Garbage, inaccurate, incomplete, misleading
This book is garbage, innacurate and misleading.Like frustration-then buy it.A jeep mechanic told me this book was a great source of customers for him. The Haynes book is no better. These companies just copy errors and inaccuracies from each other. RE-build it yourself!
Typical Chilton book, tells you everything about the car you could possibly want to know except the thing you're looking for.I recently bought an old (1988) Jeep Comanche; wanted to replace the speedometer cable...using this book I could replace the transmission, overhaul the engine, re-build the differential,but no where could I find any info on the speedometer.Line drawings are crude and difficult to interpret, photos are worse.The text is good and gives adequate instructions.When I go to grind the valves, I'll know how! ... Chilton's Jeep CJ/Scrambler 1971-86 Repair Manual
As always, Chiltons manuals are one of the best for reference to a vehicle. They are usually on the mark for information and "how to" things. This particular manual is a little weak on the V-8 304 CID engine and I believe that there are mis-prints throughout on the numbering and figures that are drawn out. The electrical diagrams are the best there are but I think that the identifying the part that you are looking at could use a little more detail. All in all, the Chiltons repair manuals remain the best.

Not a good book, not specialized in anything, when it actualy get to the poind of the explanation/suggestion it direct you to a local dealer (well thanks a lot) To all TJ/YJ owners
Even though the newest edition says it has been updated to include up to the 1999 model, information on the YJ/TJ Wranglers is slim at best. It is only two stars for all YJ/TJ owners. This is s true CJ or classic Jeep owner book and has much info on those models. A lot info in this book is too basic. It needs severe updating for the newer models. a really good 4wd guide book
I found this very informative showing good facts and details, examples would be gps coordinates and road information (like you'll pass mine shaft on rt then road forks).One will find that the book also has a detailed road description in reverse, in case you are on a road traveling from the other end.You will also love the maps, lots of them, on every page. Then on each page the author talks about what hazards to look for and what sights to see, goes into good overall detail, very well done. The book goes over facts of 4 wheeling for the novice and the pro so that all can enjoy the outdoors and be safe at the same time.When traveling these roads you'll have the guide next to you with page marked for constant referance. Wish I could give it less that 1 star
I purchased this book to find out how to repair the heater and change the fuel filter on my 1990 diesel F250.It offered no help on either.Trees have fallen in the forest for no good reason.

This book is a lemon!
Chiltons books used to help me rebuild engines, transmissions, axles and more.They were very detailed and helpful.When I opened this one to try to troubleshoot the transmission, it says the only thing I am smart enough to do is check the fluid level.Beyond that, I need to go to a mechanic. Chilton continues to be a seething hotbed of mediocrity
I have "shade tree'd" my way through over 40 years of Haynes, Chilton and Motor repair manuals. Chilton has gone from being a moderately good reference source for technical data in the early 60's to a few hundred sheets of disposable shop rags. The offering in question has an almostcomplete lack of diagnostic information, and is nothing more than a list ofvague instructions on how to take your truck apart. Read more

Disappointed
I bought this book because I was rebuilding my T 176 Transmission. The preview stated that it gave information on transmission rebuilds. Well it does, but not on the one I have. Does not give info on the T176/T178 tranny. After I bought the book I realized this is one mans rebuild of a Jeep as it should be in his mind. Stick with the Chiltons. Overall I did not find this book useful.

Good idea but nowhere close to expectations
This book looks like it was written by someone who works in their own garage as a hobby. There is no real technical data in this book-- no hint of professionalism.

Good reference book for "handymen".
I consider that this it's a good book. This book describes detailed the procedures of repair for Toyota RAV4. It seems to me excellent to mention the amount of photographies that allow to see with clarity where each screw is located.

keep looking, you will probably find it!
Although focussing on the rebuilding and some modification of a CJ5, this book lives up to its billing as a reference for all CJ models, even the earlier ones.The pictures are exceptionally thorough, and you can almost always find one of the model you are working on.The narrative is well crafted, and almost all needed explanations are included.The author has been successful in presenting needed steps and procedures that even an amateur can follow without bogging down in needless detail or cutting corners that the experienced reader would already know.I have been especially gratified that he includes procedures and information that the other "manuals" I use have omitted.This has been my "go to" source so far.Only weaknesses I see are that I have had to search, sometimes diligently, to find CJ2A information I needed, and the absence of parts numbers or exploded diagrams [including these was obviously not in his plan--further, they are readily available elsewhere].If I had access to but one manual, this one would be it.

Great book for the restoring sole!
I bought this book for my husband who is restoring a '56 Willies.We had look for manuals and books to guide him through the process and couldn't find any that he liked.I found this book on-line and decided to take a chance.I'm very glad I did!!!Read more

Not the only book to have, but helpful
I agree with the last reviewer but I have to say it's most helpful to have the Chiltons manual as well as the Haynes and especially the Jeep Factory Service Manual. None of these alone has had everything I needed in it and I've found it helpful to look in each of them to see which has the best write up for whatever I was working on. Heck, it's only $16 anyway.

Save your money!
I purchased this book from an automotive store that had decided to drop the line.Now I know why!This book never seems to have any info on anything that I need, and doesn't cover anything but stock, stock, stock.To make matters worse, they seem to make up names for parts.AnyJeeper knows the term "sway bars".Not Chiltons!They decide tomake up their own terms!("Lateral Control Arm" if I remembercorrectly)I'd highly recommed a book written FOR Jeepers BY Jeepers.Ifyou want every book on Jeep, buy away.If you hope to actually use thisbook, look elsewhere. ... Shadetree mechanics -- step-by-step
Contrary to a previous review, I found this book to be an EXCELLENT step-by-step guide for this shadetree mechanic.In fact, I'm using it to do a complete "frame-off" restoration of a vintage Jeep.And I've never even had a shop class!(Or even any real interest in cars, for that matter.)

Limited Electrical
The book barely mentioned the trip/mileage computer much less what to do to troubleshoot, remove and replace or what else might cause a blank screen.I was very disappointed that even the wiring diagrams showed nothing concerning this unit.Also to try and track down the circuit involved the book gave no help on basics such as the fuses involved.

Waste of Money
The manual covers too many vehicles in general with little detail for specifics. It's difficult to find what your looking for.If you need a manual, try the dealer. I've had bad luck with Chilton in the past, I should have known.

Easy does it...
I recently purchased a 1997 Expedition, but couldn't find the owners manual.I ordered this book with hopes of clarifying some basic information.I think this book has quite a bit of data, but it is hard to read, index, and otherwise unfriendly.For example, the fuse box section does not tell you which fuses relate to which piece of equipment, making troubleshooting tough.The section on sizes and capacities is so small and marked with footnotes, I still don't know what size fuel tank I have.Also, too many models covered in this manual that aren't important to me, and too few pictures.I'm gonna try the Haynes version. ... Good info BUY the book please so we can have Vol 2!
I was sad to hear there is no vol 2.I wanted to get it for the bit about tires and other advice.Oh well.While I wish this was a more complete book, I can understand not going to the work for vol 2 if this didn't sell better.All I can say is if Vol 2 is ever published, I will be in line.
An Easy Reader
This book is very easy to read cover-to-cover. It is entertaining, and easy to understand. A couple of things got annoying. There are 4-5 pages of "How to pack a cooler" which will leave you wondering "why did i just read that?" and many many references about "Volume 2". Much of the information that i wanted from this book is apparently going to be published in volume 2. I will buy that one when it comes out.
