By far the BEST book for CISSP certification
I have been teaching the CISSP certification for IT Mentor for the last 5 years.This is the book I use for all of my students.I must say, this is the best book you can buy.I have over 20 CISSP books in my library, but I always recommend this one.
Good book, though some turn offs
The book has a good coverage on most of the topics. I think if you already have Telecom and Crypto background, you'll be fine with this book, as those don't seem to be done well enough though they are important fot the exam.
How to study and pass the CISSP.
Three weeks after I took the CISSP exam, I received an email telling me I had passed. I came out of the exam fairly confident I'd pass but one can never be too sure with the CISSP - the questions are quite ambiguous and quite often you are making an educated guess in picking out what you think is the best among the 2 choices you have narrowed down to. It has often been said that the CISSP is an exam that is an inch deep and a mile wide. You'd be lucky if you use more than half of what you studied for this exam. I am a software engineer and I know I will never have to choose which fire extinguisher to use for which kind of fire, unless I am actually struck in one!

For the Instructional Designer
We used this book in my design class when I was earning a masters in training. It is still on my bookshelf. It is critical not only for instructional designers, but for managers who may know little or nothing about training but make training decisions.

Great resource for teachers new to this technology!
Will's book is a great resource for teachers who are interested in introducing blogs etc. into the classroom but who may be intimidated by the technology. His book is easy to read and understand for those of us who are not as technologically advanced as of yet. I believe Will's book will be one of the greatest resources in my classroom in September. I would recommend this book to any teacher who does not want to be left behind by his/her students as technology advances.

Step by Step Book for Beginners
Will Richardson displays great pedagogical style in walking the reader through the steps of seemingly complicated technological tasks.He makes learning about great tech tools for the classroom like blogs, wikis, and rss easy and exciting. He not only tells how to set them up but various ways to use them in the classroom.I had been searching for such a text and now that I've found it, I plan to use it as the main text for my grad student course about educational uses of the Internet.

An excellent introduction to Moodle
Whether you are a teacher or a site administrator, you will find this book to be an indispensible companion during your first school year using Moodle -- and probably long afterward.I was fortunate to start teaching with Moodle around the time this book came out.When I scanned the table of contents, I was dismayed to discover that approximately half of the book seemed to have nothing to do with me.After all, teachers don't install, configure, or extend Moodle, and teachers (at least at my school) can't create new courses or course categories.As it turned out, I couldn't have been more wrong.As teachers, we are profoundly affected by the decisions made by our Moodle administrators during Moodle setup, as well as the procedures they use to administer the system.Inevitably, we come to realize that we cannot avoid knowing the information in chapters 2, 3, 7, and 9.Fortunately, the author's explanations are clear and do not require a technical background.He illustrates everything using an example site called "Wilderness Skills" which carries through the book.

Great for eLearning Designers and Reviewers
With many years of experience in building eLearning and educational software I was looking for a reference to back up my "I know it when I see it" thoughts on good and bad courseware. This book met or exceeded my expectations. I like that the chapters are shorter and that the observations are backed up with study results. The References section is a valuable collection of eLearning studies in itself. There are also useful checklists included with the book.
A book that every person in this field need to use
e-Learning and the Science of Instruction is a must have for anybody that is already a pro, or just starting out at designing web-based instruction.The authors give outstanding guidance for every step of the way, from explaining theories to the best way to set up your web site.It shows excellent illustrations of what to do, as well as what NOT to do.This book is a tool that every one in the business shouldn't be without.

Excellent practical book for practitioners
I have been designing and developing e-Learning for 6 years and this book has been wonderful to help remind me of some basics, teach me a few things, and give excellent practical advice as I continue developing.I am not one to read textbooks or non-fiction but I find this writing style very easy to read and I am able to easily apply the concepts.If you have never developed e-Learning but are studying the topic in school, this book may come across as dry and hard to read.Hold on to it and pick it up after you've been developing for a year or so and I'm sure you'll find it as useful as I have. ... Great Resource for Teachers

Review of Teaching and Learning at a Distance
This is an excellent book. The authors know their business. The writing is clear and easy to follow. I particularly like the pratical information provided by the authors and their examples. There is also a chapter on copyright and applications. The book covers a brief history of Distance Ed which shows how this educational platform has grown.
A good introduction
I use this book as my text in The Foundations of Distance Education and Training course I teach at the University of Phoenix. It has recently been updated and in the past 4 years of teaching this class, not a single student has complained about the book (somewhat unusual).

A book with lots of practical tidbits
This seems to be a good book for begining college instructors looking for the classroom basics plus some ideas on how to modify some basic formulas to make it a bit more interesting.It manages to keep from getting too bogged down with details about specific strategies.Unfortunately, this is also it's weakness, as I did not find support readily available when I wished to know more about a specific strategy.Worth having as a basic reference.

OK for teaching children - Not for teaching adults
This book is written with the assumption that you will be teaching young people in college or below(pedagogy).It is great for that.If you want to get it to learn techniques for teaching adults in the workplace(andragogy), look for another book.

Solid technology book that is not outdated when published
Many technology books are outdated by the time they are published. I am pleased to say that this book methodically moves through effective instruction and then how to use technology to aid it. I will be using this book as a reference for some time to come.

Technology presented with clarity
Pay no attention to one gentleman's "Apple Pie" comment about the step-by-step instructions included in this book. After all, not everyone is as technologically adept as he may be. If you have already mastered such technology, then this material is possibly too basic for you. But for the rest of us, one of the major benefits of this book is indeed the fact that the instructions have been so clearly presented!
Light and introductory with the scent of apple pie
I wasn't impressed with this book for two separate reasons.Firstly, the production standard struck me as almost 1960s' in style - black and white photos (nice 'grainy' look), big bulky monitors and a general aged format.It is peculiar I agree, but the book looks like it was written at least 30 if not 40 years ago.The second set of quibbles I have with the text is that it presume the reader is almost completely ignorant of any kind of presentation technology.This assumption may have been acceptable several decades ago but the universality of TV seriously undermines its value.Television is constantly exposting the public to new technologies.For instance, in the text there is a piece with graphic devoted to how to load a slide projector.How relevant is that to today's classroom?Moreover, any decent bit of kit comes with instructions.I accept that the authors wish to do a thorough hand holding with the reader, but the book assume too little exposure to technology which renders it advice mediocre in places. Possibly it should be retitled Instructional Media Technology for Complete Dummies. The bits on the web are small (literally bits) which is not a good sign.Overall, the book was lightweight - possibly I am being unfair as I am not looking for the technology it covers, but forreview of current and future developments.In any event I regret buying the book as it doesn't fit my needs and I didn't like its presentation style.It is a tired book, more like jaded, that does not mesh well with the style culture of modern multimedia technology. ... Outstanding Work on the Science of Learning
This is one of the best books I have read on how students learn. Mayer's cognitive model, while limited to visual and auditory channels, provides a wealth of possibilities for maximizing the retention and understanding of information by students. Mayer practices what he preaches and writes a compelling, easy-to-understanding, summary of his ten years of research on the subject. The most important part of the book is that Mayer backs up his statements with data from the classroom. I can think of no other book that can make that claim. Like another reviewer said, if it doesn't change the way you teach or think about teaching, it should!

Will Change Your Teaching!
This is a fantastic book!It has a very nice discussion and a summary of the relevant research documenting that students learn best with multimedia presentations (pictures and words).The research results and guidelines for designing figures and computer-based materials will change the way you teach forever, or at least should! As a University Geology Professor, this book has truely been an inspiration to my teaching and writing.The only drawback is that it is a little repetitive, but not enough to detract from the great message contained within.

Good research and a good read
This is a very well presented description of Mayer's research on whether people learn betterusing multimedia (as opposed to just reading text). He describes the tests he and colleagues have performed to see how much learners are able to remember (retention) and how much learned information they can apply to new situations (transfer), and presents the results in manner that is relatively easy to understand (you have to know a little something about statistics, but not too much). The number of subjects tested is small, and Mayer is sure to point that out - but the basic research should lay groundwork for others to conduct similar tests on larger groups. The design principles Mayer puts forth (e.g. "contiguity") are very much in keeping with the general principles of good visual design (esposed by design notables such as Robin Williams (not the actor)). Best of it's subject
I am an instructional designer of online learning and in an effort to implement discussions in the courses I create, I ordered four books on discussion-based online learning. This book was by far the most comprehensive, balanced, and useful book of the four. While reading the book, I was immediately able to implement the strategies outlined in the book, and justify my reasons for implementing groups/discussions to the college instructors teaching the courses I create. I think that this book is valuable to anyone creating and supporting online learning: instructors, professors, instructional designers, trainers, and training managers. I even copied several pages of the book that justify online learning as a whole for my director.

Dr. Bender offers a well balanced view of online discussion as a teaching tool in asynchronous education. For Instructional Designers In Any Visual Medium
This is a natural follow-up to Ms. Clark's "e-Learning and the Science of Instruction."For me, no other author has written about e-Learning visual and textual design and content, with the authority, clearity, and explicitness as Ms. Clark."Graphics for Learning," clearing links design concepts to supporting reseach in a manner not often found in instructional and graphic design books.I appreciate reading facts and not someone's opinion about why one should do one thing or the other.Especially for those designing e-Learning or distance learning this is a must have book.

The Best of Both Worlds
"Graphics for Learning" takes on the challenging task of bridging two ways of looking at instructional graphics: the academic research that deals with how people learn from graphics and the practical application of that research. You don't need a Phd to read and understand the research findings, as Clark and Lyons summarize and explain them well, with ample use of helpful graphics.
Very Useful Reference
It is usually quite difficult to find a good How-To book in the Infographics/Instructional Design arena. So, I was quite delighted to discover this book by Dr Ruth Clark and another book (Creating Graphics for Learning and Performance : Lessons in Visual Literacy) by Dr Linda Lohr.

This is my FAVORITE teaching book.It has graphic organizers that are neither too simple nor too challenging for high school level students, and better yet, examples of how to use each.A must-havefor all English teachers!

Poorly written
I bought this book for an advanced marketing class in my MBA program. The authors explain in detail the elementary topics which are covered in basic marketing class. For e.g. they talk in detail about segmentation, but they fail to explain thoroughly clustering and factor analysis.The tutorial also lacks depth and does not interpret the numbers.

Worth the read
I found the book to be a good read and had a lot of interesting things to say and good examples of activities for online participants.
a useful guide for distance learning
This book is ideal for the professor or instructor who is providing instruction through distance learning. For online instruction to be successful, students cannot just sit and absorb content passively. The online professor/instructor must encourage an engaged learning environment, which is described by the authors as an environment based on constructivist principles and problems-based learning.
